Based Upon The ABC Television Series Created By Sidney Sheldon

Hart House Night

Jonathan and Jennifer are lying together in the spa in their bathroom one night soaking themselves in the water which is filled up with bubble bath. They are holding a glass of Champagne. A bottle of Champagne is chilling in an ice bucket near them on the side of the hot tub.

"Hmm, do you not just love our moments together like this, darling? Champagne and soaking ourselves in the hot water with bubble bath covering over our bodies while we just relax?" Jennifer asks.

"I certainly do. There is no Max, no Freeway. Just the two of us in the privacy of our bathroom where we can be alone without any interruptions," Jonathan replies contemplating. "If only we could do this more often."

Jennifer chuckles. "We'll be going to our cabin in a few days. We'll have all the privacy we need for two weeks."

"Why do you think I stopped off on the way home to buy us some special Champagne?" Jonathan asks turning to her with a smile.

"Oh, this time together is a celebration," Jennifer says with a smile with a twinkle in her eyes. "Why didn't that thought occur to me?" she asks turning to face him.

Jonathan chuckles as they take a sip of their Champagne.

"Want anymore Champagne, darling?" Jonathan asks.

"Why not? It is a celebration."

Jonathan reaches over and picks up the bottle. He pours more of the Champagne into their half-empty glasses.

"Let's have a toast," Jonathan says as he places the bottle back into the ice bucket. "Here's to two weeks with the most beautiful woman I know who just happens to be my wife. May we have nothing, but memories that we'll treasure for the rest of our lives," he says seductively with a mischievous grin as they click their glasses.

"I'll drink to that, darling," Jennifer replies returning his mischievous grin. They take a sip. "Since we're going to have two weeks with just the two of us what are you planning on doing when we get back home? Will you be able to adjust to it not being just the two of us?" she asks coyly.

Jonathan takes a few moments and ponders her question before turning back to her. "Well, just like every married man I have to make some adjustments."

Jennifer smiles as she takes another sip.

"It is not like we can not have anymore precious moments like this. Besides how can I have trouble adjusting when I have the most desirable and attractive woman in all of the world?" he asks as he places his glass down. "Darling, I have an idea how to make this evening even more special," he tells her as he takes her glass and places it down.

"Jonathan, right here in the tub?" Jennifer asks taken by surprise.

"This is just the appetizer. Wait until we get into our pajamas and into our bed," Jonathan replies seductively.

"What appetizer did you decide on?" Jennifer asks playfully as Jonathan wraps his arms around her.

Jonathan smiles as he locks her into a passionate kiss. They close their eyes as they continue kissing enjoying their romantic time together as Jennifer wraps her arms around her husband. "How do you like our starter?" he asks pulling out of the kiss as they look at each other with love in their eyes as they are both enjoying this exciting moment together.

"Darling, you just stopped as it was getting really good," Jennifer tells him playfully as she kisses him on the neck.

"I was just warming up. Like they say, you ain't seen nothin' yet," Jonathan replies seductively with a mischievous expression. Jennifer chuckles as Jonathan kisses her behind the ear. She smiles as she throws her head back a little laughing gayly as Jonathan locks her into another kiss. They embrace and close their eyes again as they continue kissing.

Hart House The Next Day

Jonathan and Jennifer are still resting in their bed the next morning. Jennifer is still sleeping while Jonathan is wide awake. He is watching her sleep with his head laying on a pillow as they lie sideways across from each other. He grins as he watches his wife continue sleeping. He leans over after a few moments and kisses her on the cheek. Jennifer slowly open her eyes and smiles at him.

"Good morning," Jennifer says.

"Good morning. Did you get enough rest after last night?"

Jennifer nods her head. "I haven't slept this well in what seems like ages," she says.

"I haven't slept this well in a long while myself, darling," Jonathan replies. "After last night I think you'll be sleeping much better after we get to the cabin," he tells Jennifer playfully.

"I think you and I are reading our minds, darling, because I have the exact same thoughts," Jennifer replies with a grin.

Jonathan smiles and leans over to kiss her on the lips.

"I hate to rush you, but we need to get out of bed and get ready for the day. You and I have a lot to do in the next few days before we head out of town. I have to go to the office to handle some last minute business negotiations while you and Max have to go into town."

The Front Gate

A short time later the front gate opens, and Jonathan drives the Corniche through. He looks both ways before making a turn. After driving away from their estate Max drives up to the gate in the Mercedes. Jennifer is seated in the backseat. The gate opens once again as Max drives the car through. Just as he is watching both ways to make sure it is safe to turn, a camera lens is focusing in on Jennifer from across the way in a distance. Pictures of her are being snapped one after the other as Max drives away just as the gate closes. The mysterious young man, who has been spying on Jennifer and taking her photograph with his camera, is sitting in a truck parked out of sight. He places his camera in the passenger seat. He picks up a notepad and pencil from the floor down below. He writes down some notes as he glances at his wristwatch. He places the pad and pencil down on the floor. He starts the engine and drives off.

Deerlake, California Several Hours Later

After driving for four hours Jonathan and Jennifer reach their cabin in Deerlake that afternoon. Once approaching their cabin Jonathan brings their jeep to a stop. As they open their door and get out a young man in his late twenties, who has been standing near the lake, walks over to them.

"Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Hart," he greets them with a smile. "It is nice to have you back again," the young man says as Jonathan and Jennifer get out of their vehicle.

"Hello, Danny. We didn't expect to see you here," Jennifer replies with a smile as she hugs him.

"Since I knew you were coming down here for the first time in two years I wanted to come by to welcome you back to Deerlake."

"That certainly was very sweet of you. Wasn't it, darling?" Jennifer asks turning to her husband who is walking over to them.

"Yes, it was. Danny, you didn't have to do that,"Jonathan tells him. "How are you doing?" he asks extending his hand.

"I'm doing fine, Mr. Hart," Danny replies shaking Jonathan's hand. "Since you and Mrs. Hart saved my life when you were down here last time I figured I owed you a greeting when you got here."

"But you already thanked us by rebuilding the cabin after the explosion."

"Not to mention redecorating and looking after it when Jonathan and I are away," Jennifer tells him with a smile.

"If it hadn't been for me you wouldn't have lost the cabin in the first place," Danny replies with a frown.

"Danny, that wasn't your fault. Sheriff Williams and Roy Hamlin were the ones responsible for you ending up in jail in the first place. They were responsible for Karen's murder and blowing up our cabin."

"Jennifer is right. The important thing is that we made it out alive. You're a very responsible young man. You just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time," Jonathan assures him.

"What happened is in the past. Sheriff Williams and Hamlin are in prison for the crimes they committed while you are a free man with a long life ahead of you. Jonathan and I don't blame you."

"You're doing a wonderful job looking after our cabin. Rebuilding it and take caring of our cabin is all the gratitude we need in return for clearing your name."

"Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Hart. Do you want me to help you take your belongings into your cabin?" Danny asks.

"Thank you, Danny, but Jonathan and I can manage. Thank you for the offer," Jennifer replies placing a hand on his shoulder and giving him a warm smile.

"Say, how would you like to have some fun in town tonight?" Jonathan asks taking out his wallet.

"I would love to, but I really don't have any time. I work for Mr. Owens now at the general store for a part time job."

"Just tell Mr. Owens you're taking the night off because Jonathan Hart told you to. You can have a night off and some fun on us," Jonathan replies taking two hundred dollars out of his wallet which he hands to the young man. "Here you go. Don't spend it all in one place," he tells Danny with a smile.

"And be sure Christy has a nice time," Jennifer tells him.

"I would, but Christy moved back home to North Carolina two years ago in November."

"Oh, why?"

"Homesick I guess," Danny replies shrugging. "We still keep in touch by writing."

"That's good. The best friends are always your oldest and dearest friends," she tells him with a smile. She and Jonathan each exchange a smile as Jonathan wraps an arm around his wife's shoulder.

"Mr. Hart, I appreciate the generosity, but I can't take this much money," Danny replies thunderstruck at how much money Jonathan gave him.

"Yes, you can, Danny. Think of it as a raise."

"You must need some extra money if you're working at the store now," Jennifer says.

"Actually I am only working because Mr. Owens needs me. After Christy left I told him I would take her job."

"You certainly spend a lot of time working between looking after our cabin and the store," Jennifer replies impressed.

"I like to keep myself busy much as possible. Thank you for the money again, Mr. Hart," Danny says. "I'll never forget all you and Mrs. Hart do for me."

"You're welcome. Only do us one more favor. Call us Jonathan and Jennifer," Jonathan tells him with a smile as he pats Danny on the shoulder gently.

"I will, Jonathan and Jennifer. Have a good time during your stay!" Danny says putting the money away in his wallet. "Would you like me to come by any to help out?"

"No, that won't be necessary. Jonathan and I would like some time to ourselves," Jennifer tells him putting an arm around Jonathan's shoulder.

"I can understand why. Deerlake is peaceful."

"That it is. How are the fish biting?" Jonathan asks.

"About the same as always. But I don't think you and Jennifer came up just for fishing."

"No, we didn't," Jennifer replies with a smile as she and Jonathan each exchange a look.

"I'll be letting you have the cabin and lake all to yourselves now. Goodbye," Danny says as he heads toward his truck parked across from them in the distance.

"Goodbye," Jonathan and Jennifer tell him at the same time with a smile as they wave him a goodbye. Danny waves as he gets into his truck. He starts the engine and drives off.

"Danny Wilson certainly is such a thoughtful and considerate young man," Jennifer says as they walk to the back of their jeep. "I wonder if he has a girl."

"I don't know, but if he doesn't you're taken," Jonathan replies opening the trunk.

"Jonathan, I was thinking of someone more his age," Jennifer says rolling her eyes as they take out their suitcases.

"You probably are not his type anyway, darling," Jonathan replies teasingly.

"What?!" Jennifer asks stunned at what Jonathan just told her. "I'll just have you know that I am sure that many men find me attractive!" she exclaims giving him a look of annoyance as she places her suitcase down and places her hands on her hips.

"Name one his age," Jonathan says with a grin.

"Oh, Jonathan, make yourself useful, will you?" Jennifer asks with a laugh as she hands him the tackle box. Jonathan puts his suitcase down and takes it.

"I love it when you're angry!" Jonathan exclaims with a mischievous smile.

"I know. But if you don't watch it you're going to be tackled," Jennifer replies with a smile.

"I love a challenge, darling," Jonathan replies as he places the box down on the ground.  He smiles deviously at his wife.

"Jonathan, what are you doing?" Jennifer asks giving him a look of suspicion.

Jonathan walks right up to her and gently knocks her to the ground with his hand. Jennifer chuckles and smiles as Jonathan jumps on top of her. He gives her a kiss on the lips.

"Still want to try tackling?" Jonathan asks with a twinkle in his eye.

"No, darling. I think you would win," Jennifer replies with a smile. "Come on. Let's get our belongings into the cabin," Jennifer says as Jonathan gets off of her and lifts his wife to her feet with his hand. Jonathan and Jennifer bursts out laughing as they embrace for a few moments. They finally pull out of their embrace and go back to unloading the jeep.

Hart House Night

That night a Corvette drives up to the house. A man and a woman get out of the car and approach the front door. The man takes out a key from the pocket of his suit and unlocks the door. He and his companion enter the house. The woman shuts the door behind them.

“Where does Jennifer Hart keep the scissors?” she asks.

“On the desk in the living room,” the man replies as they walk into the living room through the foyer.

They walk over to a table by the nearest couch. He turns on a lamp so they can see in the dark.

“There they are,” the man says pointing to the desk where the scissors are in plain sight.  They walk over to the desk. He takes out a pair of gloves from a pocket and puts them on.

“I’ll look over the mail,” the woman replies as she takes out a pair of gloves from her purse. She puts them on and goes behind the desk. She begins glancing over the mail.

The man picks up the scissors and looks over them before slipping them into a plastic bag which he took out of his other pocket.

“Here, better put these scissors in your purse, dear,” he tells the woman. He hands her the bag, and she places the bag inside.

“No mail addressed to Jennifer Hart yet?” he asks as he comes up behind her. He watches her to continue sorting through the envelopes.

“No so far all the envelopes are addressed to just Jonathan and Jennifer Hart,” she replies. The door to the kitchen opens, and Freeway walks in. He begins barking upon seeing the intruders.

“Frank,” the woman says nervously as they turn to see Freeway who is walking over to them. He continues barking.

“It’s all right. Let’s just get on with this,” he tells her as they ignore the dog and continue getting on with the reason they broke into the house.

Finally after glancing over the last of the envelopes the woman finds one that says,”

Jennifer Hart
 3100 Willow Pond Road
Bel Air, CA 9007

“Frank, here is one addressed to Mrs. Hart,” the woman says sighing in relief.

“Good. Let’s get out of here. That mutt's barking is starting to get on my nerves,” Frank tells her as the woman slips the envelope into her purse. She shuts her purse. Freeway continues to bark at them as Frank and the woman head to the door. Frank opens the door for the woman. She walks outside. Frank glances at Freeway, who is in the foyer behind him, still barking. He sighs and rolls his eyes annoyed at Freeway's persistent barking. He walks out and shuts the door. He takes out the key and locks the door.

"That is some watch dog the Harts have," the woman says casually as they head back to their vehicle.

"Yeah. At least now we can get ready to set my plan into motion just as soon as Jonathan and Jennifer Hart get back from their vacation," Frank replies as he holds open the door for the woman. She gets in, and he shuts the door. Frank walks over to the driver's side of the Corvette and gets in before shutting his door.

"How do you think Jonathan Hart is going to react to witnessing his wife being arrested for murder?" the lady asks turning to Frank.

"Jonathan Hart is not a man to be reckoned with. He'll fight like the devil to prove her innocence," Frank replies turning to face her. "I would like to be a fly on the wall just to see the look on his face when the police charge her with murder. What I wouldn't give to see his expression. Jonathan Hart made me lose everything I had and worked for all these years. I'm going to give him a chance to experience real pain and heartache. Just like the pain and heartache he put me through. My only regret is he won't ever know it was me responsible for taking his wife away from him," he replies with a smile. "Hand me the scissors."

The lady opens her purse and takes out the bag with the scissors.  She hands it to Frank. He takes the bag.

"Oh, yes, Jennifer Hart, you're going to know what it is like to feel like a caged animal," Frank says with a devious smile delighted at the thought of knowing that Jennifer Hart is soon going to find herself charged and arrested for murder.  He bursts out laughing as he continues staring at the scissors. The woman, seated next to him, smiles deviously herself and joins in the uproarious laughter.

Harts’ Cabin In Deerlake The Next Day

Jonathan and Jennifer are both sitting by the edge of the lake as they are fishing on their fishing rod. They are just enjoying the peaceful and isolated area of land that they have all to themselves during their vacation. A picnic basket is seated on the ground near Jonathan.

"Oh, I could just spend days like this fishing," Jennifer says with a sigh as she looks out at the beautiful lake.

"Days even we haven't caught one fish?" Jonathan asks turning to her with a smile.

"Maybe we should try using different bait," Jennifer replies.

"It wouldn't hurt to try. We'll go into town this evening to ask Sam what he recommends. But in the meantime how about lunch?" Jonathan suggests as he puts down his rod.

"Darling, we just got out here only an hour ago," Jennifer reminds her husband after glancing at her wristwatch.

"This lunch is a surprise, darling," Jonathan tells her as he lifts himself up. He picks up the picnic basket. "I had Max yesterday pack us some special food for lunch and dinner."

"Open the basket and let's eat," Jennifer replies eagerly as she places down her fishing rod.

"Now hold your horses, darling. We can't eat just yet. I have a few more surprises in store. I'll be right back," Jonathan tells her.

"Can't I have just a peek?" Jennifer asks impatiently as she lifts herself to her feet.

"No, no. You have to wait," Jonathan replies with a smile and a twinkle in his eye as he places the basket behind his back.

"Jonathan, you know how I am about surprises," Jennifer tells him trying her best to get her husband to let her take a look at what Max packed in the basket.

"Yes, I know. That is why I am torturing you," Jonathan says teasingly.

"Is that so? Are you trying to get a rise out of me?" Jennifer asks with a smile as she reaches for the basket. Jonathan turns around managing to keep the basket out of her sight.

"Jonathan!" Jennifer tells him with a chuckle. "Don't make me throw you in the lake," Jennifer says teasingly.

"That may be worth it just so it would give me a good excuse to build us a fire in the daytime," Jonathan replies with a mischievous grin.  "Trust me, darling. You're going to enjoy the surprises. Just be patient. The result will be worth it," he tells her as he gives her a kiss on the lips.

"Darling, get on with the surprises," Jennifer says softly with a grin and twinkle in her eye. "I'll wait. I promise just to look and not touch."

"No, I'm taking the basket with me," Jonathan tells her as he brings the basket out from behind his back.

"You don't trust me?"

"I think I better not answer that question. I wouldn't want to say anything that could be held against me," Jonathan replies with a wink. Jennifer bursts out laughing as Jonathan leaves Jennifer alone. While Jonathan walks over to the jeep, which is now parked beside the cabin,  Jennifer looks out at the lake admiring the breathtaking view. Soon Jonathan approaches her with his hands held behind his back. Quietly and discreetly while his wife is enjoying the view he sneaks up behind her. He reaches over and kisses her on the neck. Jennifer smiles and chuckles as she turns around and kisses him on the lips. Jonathan brings out a bottle of wine and two glasses from behind his back.

"Wine?!" Jennifer asks in delight taken by surprise at seeing the wine and glasses in Jonathan's hands. "Oh, darling, that makes this vacation here perfect!" Jennifer exclaims as she gives him a kiss on the lips.

"I thought since we're going to have a picnic we should do it in style," Jonathan replies with a smile.

Suddenly soft and romantic instrumental music starts to play. It appears to be coming from the car radio.

"I wanted us to be put in a romantic mood," Jonathan explains as he hands her the wine and glasses.  "Will you open the wine?" he asks as he takes the hanging basket off of his arm. Jennifer takes the bottle and glasses. Jonathan reaches into the basket and takes out a corkscrew.  He smiles as he hands it to her. Jennifer smiles as she takes the corkscrew as she starts to open the wine bottle with it. Jonathan reaches into the basket and takes out a blanket. He hands it to her. "How about you set the table ready while I get our meal prepared?" Jonathan asks.

Jennifer has just popped the wine bottle open as Jonathan places the blanket on her shoulder.  Keeping the corkscrew in the bottle to keep the wine from overflowing she carefully places the bottle and glasses down on the ground where the bottle can stay without falling over and making a mess. She takes the blanket off of her shoulder as she walks over where there is shade from the sun facing them. She places the blanket down neatly. She walks back over to where she set down the bottle and glasses. She picks them up and brings them over to the blanket. She places the bottle in the middle of the blanket and places a glass at each side. She sits down by the left side of the blanket. Jonathan walks over with the basket. He places it down on the blanket.

"Now you get to see what I had Max pack," Jonathan tells her as he opens the basket. He brings out Caviar.  "First we have some Caviar," he says as he places it down. He brings out some strawberries. "Strawberries," he continues which he places on the blanket next. The next thing Jonathan brings out of the basket is some sandwiches. "Sandwiches," Jonathan says placing them down as Jennifer continues to watch what Jonathan is bringing out for their picnic.  He brings out a plate of salad. "Caesar Salad."  He places it on the blanket. He reaches into the basket again and brings out a plate of Lasagna which he places on the blanket too. "Lasagna Verde."  Jonathan then brings out a plate of Chocolate Mousse which he places down. "And Chocolate Mousse."

"Jonathan!" Jennifer exclaims in disappointment giving her husband a look of disapproval. "You know how I feel about desserts. We're supposed to be watching our diet."

"I have another surprise for you I managed to sneak into my suitcase when you weren't looking. I brought our jogging shoes for us so we could jog every morning."

"You thought of everything," Jennifer replies with a smile.

"I still have two more surprises left in the basket, darling," Jonathan tells her with a smile.

"Naturally."

Jonathan brings out two candleholders which he places at the edge of the blanket. He brings out some candlesticks which he places in the candleholders. He reaches into the basket and brings out some matches in a box.

"I'll light the candles, darling," Jennifer says taking the matches.

She opens the box of matches and takes out a match. She lights the candles and blows out the match before placing it down somewhere on the blanket. Jonathan reaches in the basket and brings out a vase holding flowers. He places the vase in the middle of the blanket. He shuts the basket which he places near him. He takes a seat on the ground across from Jennifer.

"Now where did you get the flowers? I know Max couldn't have packed them yesterday."

"You caught me red-handed," Jonathan replies snapping his fingers. "I went into town this morning while you were still asleep. I kept them in the refrigerator. Look at the wine."

Jennifer picks up the bottle and looks at the label. "It is imported. Oh, and it was released the year we got married: 1976," Jennifer replies impressed noticing the date. "Why the imported wine?" she asks as she takes the corkscrew out of the bottle.

"Don't you remember what today marks the anniversary of?" Jonathan asks as he picks up the bottle. He starts to pour the wine into their glasses.

Jennifer stops to ponder a few moments before responding. "Oh, today marks the first vacation we took together after our honeymoon," Jennifer replies with a smile. "We spent it here in Deerlake. That is when we decided to buy a cabin. Oh, Jonathan, you always remember every special occasion!" she says deeply touched. "I can't believe I forgot our first vacation together after our honeymoon."

"Well, you and I have spent a lot of time traveling together over the years. I wanted to wait eight years before we came back here on this very day. All these years later I thought we would appreciate our first vacation since our honeymoon even more than we did back in 1976."

Jennifer smiles as she picks up her glass. "Darling, here is to remembering our first vacation here in Deerlake," she replies raising her glass.

"I'll drink to that, darling," Jonathan replies raising his glass with a smile. They click their glasses together in a toast. Just as they smile at each other while beginning to take a sip of their wine the Harts happen to look over at the lake. They see Jonathan's fishing rod moving toward the lake.

"Jonathan, you've caught a fish!" Jennifer exclaims in shock. Jonathan and Jennifer quickly place their glass down and hurry toward the lake before the rod disappears into the water. They manage to reach the edge of the lake before the rod sinks. Jonathan quickly grabs his rod. He pulls the fish in by pumping and lifting the rod while reeling. Jennifer picks up the net.  She holds the net out close to her husband. Jonathan reels in the fish which is a trout. He brings it out of the water, and Jennifer catches the fish in the net.

"Darling, you've caught a big one!" Jennifer says in astonishment overjoyed at her husband's success in finally catching a fish. "That is the first time you've caught a fish in years."

"Yes, and I thought the only thing the fish here in Deerlake were good for was living in their natural habitat," Jonathan replies with a smile impressed.

"Congratulations," Jennifer says as she leans over to kiss him. Jonathan places his arm around her shoulders as they kiss.

Hart House

Jonathan and Jennifer are sound asleep in their bed. They are both exhausted from the drive home from their cabin. Freeway is curled up on the side of the bed asleep. Freeway wakes up and pauses as he hears a noise coming from downstairs. He listens a few more moments before jumping off of the bed and hurrying out of the bedroom.

Meanwhile downstairs in the foyer Frank and his girlfriend are setting the final phase of their plan to frame Jennifer for murder into action.  They are both carrying a body of a man through the door with their gloves on. Carefully and cautiously they watch where they are going as they drag the body into the living room. Frank is carrying the dead man by his arms while the woman is carrying him by his feet.  As they come up to the piano in the back of the room Freeway walks into the room barking. Startled Frank backs up and accidentally knocks over a picture of Jennifer in a frame. The frame falls to the floor causing the glass to break into pieces.

"Just what we needed," the woman says in disgust as they stop to take a break from carrying the body.

Frank glances over his shoulder. Upon seeing the photograph he knocked off was Jennifer's a wide smile comes across his face.

"Actually it makes the plan work out even better," Frank replies with delight. "What would make a better surprise for Jonathan Hart in the morning besides discovering a body with letters implicating he was Jennifer's lover?" he asks as he looks at the woman waiting for her response.

"Than finding a picture of his wife being knocked over with the glass in the frame smashed," the woman says catching on to what Frank is thinking. A sly smile comes across her face as she looks at Frank. He nods his head.  As Frank and his female companion continue to carry the body, Freeway continues to bark.

Meanwhile upstairs Jonathan and Jennifer are still sound asleep totally unaware of what is taking place downstairs while Freeway is barking persistently. Frank and the woman reach the desk by the spiral staircase. Slowly and carefully they place the body down in front of the desk before turning the victim over on his stomach. Scissors are revealed to be stabbed in his back. They heave a sigh of relief at finally placing the heavy body down on the floor. The woman reaches into her purse and takes out some envelopes that are addressed to Jennifer. She hands them to Frank. He takes them and carefully places them in the victim's right hand.

"All right let's get to work to making this house look like an attempted robbery took place," Frank tells the woman.

Hart House The Next Morning

Jennifer comes walking into the bedroom from the bathroom. She is wearing a robe with their first initial, "J," imprinted.

"Darling, how about I fix us some coffee while we wait for Max to arrive to cook us breakfast?" Jennifer asks as she turns around.

"Coffee is exactly what I need. I have a busy day in store at the office," Jonathan shouts back from the bathroom.

"All right then. Your coffee is coming right up," Jennifer replies with a smile.  She whistles as she starts to head out of the room. Upon reaching the corridor Freeway comes running up to her. He barks.

"Well, good morning, sweetheart. Did you spend the night downstairs?" Jennifer asks as she bends down to look the dog in the eye. "I thought with us being gone for two weeks you would have wanted to spend the night in bed with mommy and daddy." She reaches down and pets Freeway on the head. He barks loudly.

"Freeway, is something wrong?" Jennifer asks taken aback by Freeway's barking.

He barks once again.

"Why do I get the feeling this isn't going to be a good morning after all?" Jennifer wonders out loud with a look of worry on her face dreading what could have happened that prevented Freeway from spending the night with them and now his unusual loud barking. Freeway barks once again and hurries towards the stairs.

"All right. Mommy is coming," Jennifer replies nervously as she follows the dog wondering what happened.

Jennifer follows Freeway down the landing and to the stairs. After walking down half of the stairs Jennifer happens to glance over and sees the dead body by the desk in the living room. A look of fear and shock comes across Jennifer's face as she stops walking down the steps. She continues to stare at the body speechless and thunderstruck. She is so disturbed by the corpse she fails to notice that their living room has been torn apart and is in shambles. Freeway walks down the remaining steps and turns to face Jennifer on the floor by the stairs. He barks once again.

"Jonathan, we have a problem!" Jennifer shouts hesitantly without moving.

"What kind of problem?" Jonathan shouts back from upstairs. "Is it the coffee pot?"

"Uh, no you're not even close, darling! You better come down here!"

A few seconds later Jonathan comes walking out of the bedroom in his matching robe with a towel wrapped around his neck. He heads down the landing and walks down the stairs. He stops upon reaching Jennifer's side.

"What is the matter, darling?" Jonathan asks with worry upon seeing the fear on her face. "What's wrong?"

"There's a body by the desk," Jennifer says nervously as she points across from them.

"Oh, anyone we know?" Jonathan asks with a smile in disbelief thinking Jennifer is just playing a joke on him.

"I'm not laughing," Jennifer insists seriously as she turns to face him. "Look," she says as she once again points to the body. Jonathan turns around. Upon seeing the dead man, Jonathan stands speechless and with fear on his face. He and Jennifer turn to face each other as they each exchange a look of shock. Before either one of them can make a move they hear the door open. Max walks into the foyer carrying some luggage. He has a cigar in his mouth. He shuts the door. Noticing Jonathan and Jennifer on the stairs he walks over to them.

"Good mornin', Mr. and Mrs. H. I can't wait to tell you about Vegas! I was on a winnin'  streak like you would never believe!" Max tells them with a smile excitement filled in his voice. "I won over three thousand dollars!"

"That is nice," Jonathan replies nonchalantly as he and Jennifer turn to face him.

"Is that all you can say?" Max asks in disbelief as he places his luggage down. "I win over three thousand dollars, and you act like you ain't even happy for me! What is the matter with you and Mrs. H? You look like you have seen a ghost."

"Max-" Jennifer starts to say.

"Anyway, I got involved in this crap game where a lot of action was goin' on. Most everyone there was losin' so I figured it wouldn't hurt to try my luck! Lady luck has never been this sweet to me! I also met one of the nicest and most beautiful dames you'll ever meet with the exception of yourself, Mrs. H," Max continues too overjoyed by his good fortune to notice Jonathan and Jennifer are trying to tell him something.

"Max-" Jonathan starts to say trying to get his attention.

"Well, once I got started I just couldn't stop playin' that game! Everyone was blown away by how well I was doin'! At first I thought it was just a once in a lifetime opportunity! But once I kept winnin' and winnin'," Max says before Jonathan and Jennifer cut him off.

"Max!" Jonathan and Jennifer exclaim at the same time in a desperate attempt to get his attention.

"Oh, you tryin' to tell me somethin'?" he asks finally realizing they were trying to get his attention.

"Yes, Max, we have been for the past few minutes ever since you got in the house," Jennifer replies.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. H. I guess being such a lucky guy at the tables just got to me. What is it?"

"We hate to spoil your good mood, but there is a problem," Jonathan tells him.

"Trust me. There ain't no problem that could spoil my mood! What is it? Is the coffee pot actin' up again?"

"No, we have a body in the living room," Jennifer tells him nonchalantly waiting to see his reaction.

"I'm sorry. There must be somethin' wrong with my hearin'. It was so noisy in that casino. I thought you said there is a body in the livin' room," Max replies with a chuckle.

"No, there isn't anything wrong with your hearing," Jonathan tells him. "You did hear Jennifer say there is a body in the living room."

Max's smile turns to a frown. There is a look of shock and fear on his face. He takes the cigar out of his mouth.

"Anyone you know?"

"Far as we can tell he is a stranger to us," Jennifer replies as she and Jonathan walk into the foyer as they come down the last steps.

Max turns around and notices the body just as Freeway once again barks.

"Geez!" Max exclaims in disbelief at noticing the shambles the living room is in.

"We know. We couldn't believe it either."

"I ain't talkin' about the body," Max replies turning to face them. "I'm talkin' about the mess in the livin' room. It is in shreds," he tells them pointing behind him with his finger.

"What?!" Jennifer asks stunned. She and Jonathan walk into the living room followed by Max and Freeway. They look around the room observing all the damage. Jonathan and Jennifer turn to face each other in shock.

"I'll call the police from the telephone in the foyer," Max tells them as he turns around and heads back to the foyer. "That certainly is some welcome home present somebody left us," he says sarcastically as he picks up the receiver.

"Yes, but I have a feeling there is more in store for us," Jonathan replies as he places an arm around his wife.

"This is definitely a good start to our first day back home. I guess all I can say is welcome back home," Jennifer says with a sigh.

Hart House Soon After

Minutes later the police arrive on the scene. Several police cars and an ambulance are parked by the guesthouse on the other side of the house as the Harts' jeep is parked in front of the main house. Jonathan, Jennifer, and Max are seated at the table on the patio drinking fresh hot coffee Max made for them. They still can't believe what happened, but have recovered from their state of shock after discovering the dead man only a little while ago. A backdoor opens, and Lieutenant Grey walks onto the patio.

"Jonathan, I see things are still the same as always," he says walking over to them.

"Some things never change," Jonathan tells him.

"It sure is some way to start my first day back on the force," Lieutenant Grey replies with a sigh.

"I'm sorry if we spoiled it for you," Jennifer replies. "Discovering a body wasn't what we expected to find when we woke up this morning," she says as she places her cup down on the table.

"After getting that telephone call from Max I wonder if coming out of retirement was worth it."

"I'm sorry for the inconvenience," Jennifer tells him awkwardly. "I think if Jonathan and I were in your shoes we would wonder the same thing."

"I'm afraid I am just grumpy this morning. It has just been one thing after another since I walked into the station. Max, would you mind fixing me a cup of coffee? I didn't get much sleep last night," the lieutenant asks turning to Max.

"Nope," Max replies putting down his cup. "Sugar or just milk, lieutenant?" he asks as he rises from his seat.

"Both. Only put lots of sugar in the coffee. I'm gonna need it if I am going to ever get through this day," Lieutenant Grey replies taking a seat. He gets out his notepad and pencil from his jacket as Max walks into the kitchen to make some coffee for the officer.

"Jonathan, how come you and Jennifer never heard a sound last night?" the lieutenant asks as he sits back in the chair. "With the way the living room is a mess I would think you would have heard someone breaking into the house."

"Jennifer and I had been away for two weeks at our cabin in Deerlake. As you know it is a four hour drive away from Los Angeles," Jonathan replies.

"We didn't get home till ten o' clock," Jennifer adds. "We were both exhausted. We fell asleep right away."

"What about Max?"

"He was away in Vegas," Jonathan tells him. "We had a neighbor come by to take care of Freeway while we were gone. He didn't get back until this morning right before he called you."

"Can you account for Jennifer's whereabouts last night?"

"Lieutenant Grey, Jonathan just told you we were asleep. Why would he need to account for my whereabouts?" Jennifer asks baffled by the lieutenant's question.

“What are you insinuating?” Jonathan asks appalled by the lieutenant’s line of questioning.

"Jennifer had a motive for killing the man," Lieutenant Grey explains.

Jonathan and Jennifer each exchange a look of shock.

"How could I have a motive for killing a man I had never laid eyes on until this morning?"

"Jonathan and Jennifer, I don't know how to tell you this, but from what we found in the dead man's hand it looks like you had a good motive. He was blackmailing you so you had to kill him."

"Wait just a minute," Jonathan tells him. "What makes you think he was blackmailing Jennifer?"

Lieutenant Grey reaches into the inside pocket of his suit and brings out a plastic bag with  envelopes in them.

"These envelopes addressed to Jennifer," the lieutenant replies.  "The victim's address are on the envelopes. From these letters I read it seems like you were having an affair.  He threatened to tell Jonathan so in a rage you killed him. There is also several envelopes with letters that appear to be written in Jennifer's handwriting that could confirm she was his lover. Your address is also on those envelopes."

"Lieutenant Grey, you know how much Jennifer and I are in love with each other. Throughout our marriage she has never once looked at another man. She would never cheat on me let alone kill another human being in cold-blood," Jonathan tells him with some annoyance in his voice as Jennifer rises from her seat. She starts pacing anxiously.

"Jonathan, I don't believe for one second Jennifer is guilty of anything. I am just playing it straight with you. I am telling you because I know for a fact how all of this could look to the district attorney. I have known you and Jennifer too long to believe that either of you are capable of committing any felony especially murder."

"What about the murder weapon?" Jonathan asks as he looks down at the table with a frown.

"Have you noticed that the pair of scissors that you always kept on your desk is missing?" the lieutenant asks as he turns to face Jennifer.

"No," Jennifer replies as she stops pacing. "You don't mean they're the murder weapon?" she asks in shock.

"Far as we can tell they are. You know we won't be certain until we get the results after having them tested for fingerprints."

"What about the mess in our living room?" Jonathan asks not able to believe what he is actually hearing what Lieutenant Grey is saying.

"Most likely the DA will believe that Jennifer tore the room apart to make it appear as if the victim was caught in an attempt to burglarize the house," Lieutenant Gray explains as Max returns with a cup of coffee. Jennifer continues pacing back and forth with her head downcast. She can't believe what she is hearing the lieutenant saying anymore than her husband.

"Here you go, lieutenant," Max says as he places the cup in front of him.

"Thank you," the lieutenant replies without looking up at Max.

"Are you saying Jennifer could be arrested?" Jonathan asks with worry in his voice.

"I hope it doesn't come to that."

"What about the envelopes with those letters that you found in the dead man's hand?"

"Even professional criminals have left behind evidence that could incriminate them when they attempted to make it look like robbery was the reason for the killing."

"What is goin' on here?" Max asks. "What did I miss when I went back into the house?"

"Max, Lieutenant Grey found letters that could incriminate Jennifer having an affair with the victim. It appears he was blackmailing her so she killed him."

"What?!!!" Max asks stunned. "Mrs. H never even once looked at another fellow. She could never cheat on Mr. H or murder anyone," he says firmly. "No way!"

"I told the lieutenant that before you came back from the kitchen," Jonathan tells him.

"Like I told Jonathan I don’t believe for one second Jennifer is guilty of anything. The evidence we have so far are circumstantial enough though for an arrest. It doesn't help matters that the district attorney is fresh out of college who is waiting for his first big case. Unfortunately for you and Jennifer he just may be given one. Jonathan, I know you said you and Jennifer were asleep last night when all of this took place, but did any time doing the night did you wake up?" Lieutenant Grey asks.

Jonathan looks up at him with a frown before responding. "No," he replies softly.

"I'm sorry. I have no choice, but to take Jennifer downtown for questioning. I suggest you get Jennifer the best defense attorney you can find. I have a feeling that the DA will have no doubt in his mind that Jennifer is the only one who could have killed the stranger. I'll contact you soon as I receive word whether charges will be filed or not."

The lieutenant rises from his seat and walks over to Jennifer who is in a state of shock at what is happening. Jennifer glances over at Jonathan with tears in her eyes. Jonathan is looking at her with deep sadness as tears come into his eyes. They both look at each other speechless.  They can't believe they are having to face the possibility of Jennifer being charged and arrested for murder. Jonathan and Jennifer are heartbroken at the thought of being separated from one another. They both continue looking at each other speechless.

"Jennifer, please come with me," Lieutenant Grey tells her as he gently takes her by the arm. She reluctantly walks away with him as he starts to lead her to the front of the house as they head away from the patio. "I'm sorry, Jonathan. The district attorney would be breathing down my neck if I didn't bring Jennifer in for questioning," he explains as they stop to face Jonathan. Jonathan nods as he and Jennifer continue to stare at each other for a few more moments before she walks away with the lieutenant who is leading her away to a police car. Max is also speechless and in a state of shock. As the lieutenant holds the door open for Jennifer to get in the back of the vehicle Jonathan walks over from the patio. He stands near the side of the house watching helplessly as Jennifer enters the backseat.

"Jennifer!" Jonathan exclaims his voice breaking as tears are now streaming down his face.

Jennifer looks over at him as tears are streaming down her face as Lieutenant Grey shuts the door before heading over to the driver's side of the vehicle. Jonathan and Jennifer continue to look at each other as the lieutenant starts the engine and starts to drive away with the other police cars and ambulance following behind him. Max comes up to Jonathan and places a comforting hand on Jonathan's shoulder. They watch Jennifer being taken away in the car which is driving down the driveway. Jennifer looks behind her in the window in the backseat and watches as she disappears out of Jonathan and Max's sight.

The Brent Building In Los Angeles

Jonathan is standing in an office of a well-known and respected attorney, Perry Mason, which is located at The Brent Building in downtown Los Angeles. Jonathan stands talking to Perry who is seated behind his desk as he listens to Jonathan tell him about Jennifer's predicament.

"That's all we know, Perry. Until this morning Jennifer and I have never laid eyes on the man. He was a complete stranger," Jonathan says as he places his hands in his pockets.

"Jonathan, who else had the keys to your house?" Perry asks as he lies back in his chair.

"Other than Jennifer, myself, and Max no one. Jennifer gave an extra key to our neighbor so he could come and go while looking after our dog, Freeway, but he returned it to us after we got back home last night," Jonathan replies.

"What time was that?"

"We didn't get back from Deerlake until ten o' clock so sometime between five and ten minutes after."

"Other than your neighbor did anyone else know you would be gone for two weeks besides Max and your employees of course?"

"Some friends knew about Jennifer and I vacationing at our cabin.  Oh, a young man, Danny Wilson, who looks after our cabin knew we would be spending two weeks down there. Jennifer called him a few days before we left so he would know we would be coming down. He is a very responsible young man. He spends a great deal of time looking after our cabin and working at the general store."

"You certainly know me too well. You knew I was going to ask about Danny before I even had a chance to ask about his character,"Perry replies impressed with a smile. "Is there anyone you or Jennifer know or knew from your past who would want to seek revenge by framing Jennifer?"

"Jennifer and I helped put a lot of people behind bars for almost six years now so no one in particular comes to mind. Far as I know we don't have any enemies. There was a man who attempted to kill Jennifer this past February. His name was Tanner. He escaped from prison. Jennifer put him away for fraud years ago.  I told the LAPD to inform me if Tanner ever got away from the law again."

"I remember reading in the paper about Tanner's conviction. I also saw on the news channel about him being caught and sent back to prison. I never miss any news on crime. Don't misunderstand this question, Jonathan, but you have millions of dollars. There are many experienced and intelligent criminal lawyers here in the state of California so why are you asking me to defend Jennifer? I'm sure you know from the papers and television I'm retiring from my law practice this week to become a judge."

"I'm asking you to defend Jennifer because I want the very best defense attorney the state of California has ever known. You won every murder case in your career. You even helped me win that lawsuit that was filed against Hart Industries back in 1970. Jennifer's life is a stake. I'm not taking any chances of her being found guilty.  You're the only man I feel that can save Jennifer from spending years behind bars where she doesn't deserve to be or belong. Perry, I know this is asking a lot of you considering how many years you have spent defending the innocent. Jennifer is not only my wife. She is my life. I have never once let her down when she was in trouble, and I refuse to start now by taking a chance of choosing the wrong attorney for her case. Besides if you're going to retire from your practice don't you think you should go out in grand Perry Mason style?" Jonathan asks as he leans against Perry's desk.

Perry smiles at him. He is deeply moved by Jonathan's praise and faith in his ability to prove Jennifer’s innocence. Jonathan manages a slight smile.

"Let me know soon as you receive word from Lieutenant Grey about the charges. If she is charged with murder I'd be more than honored to have the privilege to defend the wife of the most decent and caring man I know," Perry replies.

Jonathan extends his hand which Perry takes as they exchange a handshake. Before Perry or Jonathan can say another word Perry's intercom is buzzed.

"What is it, Connie?" Perry asks as he presses a button and speaks into the intercom.

"Lieutenant Grey is on line one for Mr. Hart," Perry's receptionist replies.

"Put him on," Perry replies. He turns off the button on the intercom. He and Jonathan exchange a look of fear as they remain in complete silence for a few seconds. Perry picks up the receiver and hands it to Jonathan.

"Hello, Lieutenant Grey. What's the word?" Jonathan asks already feeling he knows what the officer is going to say.

The Los Angeles Police Department

Lieutenant Grey is speaking to Jonathan on the other end of the line from his office at the police department.

"Jonathan, I regret to tell you this, but Jennifer is being charged with murder. One of my men is booking her now. Get her an attorney and come down here."

"That won't be necessary. I already got the best defense attorney the state of California has. Perry Mason," Jonathan replies calmly on the other end of the line before hanging up.

Lieutenant Grey hangs up the receiver before a look of shock comes over his face. "Perry Mason?! Oh, this is just great! The press is going to be hounding me once they get word Mason is Jennifer Hart's defense attorney," he says with irritation as he rises from his seat. "Oh, why did I ever decide to rejoin the force? I ought to have my head examined!" he exclaims as he walks over to pour himself a cup of coffee.

Perry Mason's Office

Jonathan, who is standing by the edge of the desk with his back toward Perry, hands him the receiver which he takes from Jonathan. He hangs it up as Jonathan looks at the floor with his head downcast.

"One of Lieutenant Grey's men is booking Jennifer now for murder," Jonathan says with sadness in his voice.

"I'll be over to visit Jennifer just as soon as I make a couple of telephone calls. I need to let the DA know I'll be defending her. I'll see about getting a private investigator. Paul Drake is retired, but I know a man who is the best PI for the job."

"Perry, I want to handle this investigation myself," Jonathan replies.

"Jonathan, I know you're taking Jennifer being charged with murder very hard, but we need someone with years of experience. I know you and Jennifer have a reputation for helping the police from time to time. Since your wife is the accused a private investigator would be best. Jennifer will need your support and care during this time."

"I will help you in anyway you want, but please let me investigate," Jonathan says as he turns to face him as he places his hands on the desk looking Perry straight in the face. "I have more than a reason to investigate than any license private investigator. Like you said Jennifer is the accused, but I don't care how this may look to the press, DA, the judge, or anyone else. I can't just sit by while whoever is responsible for framing my wife for a murder she didn't commit. I know I may not be giving the impression I am not thinking clear, but I always think straight when it concerns Jennifer. I will not do anything foolish, but I will take the real killer down. And if Jennifer gets out on bail, she is going to help me. I know she will want in on this. If you won't let me then I'll see whoever I have to to get their cooperation. I'm afraid this is non-negotiable!" Jonathan states firmly.

Perry looks up at him as Jonathan looks up at him with pleading in his eyes. He sighs as he takes a few moments to ponder his decision. "Just keep me up to date on anything you find out and remember Jennifer is the defendant."

Jonathan nods his head as he makes toward the door.  He opens it and shuts it on his way out.

The Los Angeles Police Department

Just as Jonathan has left Perry's office Jennifer is continuing going through the process of being booked at the station. She is nervous and in a bit of a trance. She is struggling to believe she has been charged with murder for a stranger she has never laid eyes on until today and now being booked.  Her name has already been written down along with the crime she was arrested for and had her mug shot taken. Her clothes and belongings has been taken into custody. All she has left on is a wristwatch and her wedding ring. She is now having her fingerprints taken. Soon after the officer leads her away to a jail cell. As she enters where the other prisoners are kept men whistle at her while women look at her wondering what she is in for.

"All right! Knock it off!" the officer orders.

The whistles come to an end, but the male inmates continue to stare at her and wave as the officer walks her down to the last cell. He opens the door. Jennifer stares blankly at the empty cell before walking in reluctantly. The officer shuts the jail cell door and locks it before walking away leaving Jennifer locked up with the other prisoners. Jennifer places her hands around the bars and stares out with tears streaming down her face.

The Los Angeles Police Department That Night

Jonathan is anxiously waiting to see Jennifer in a visiting room at a table hours after her being locked up in a cell. The door opens, and Jennifer walks in with a bailiff behind her. Jennifer smiles at seeing Jonathan. Jonathan rises from his seat at the table and smiles himself.  Jennifer walks over to the table and takes a seat across from her husband as the bailiff stands near by watching them. Jonathan sits down.

"How are you holding up, darling?" Jonathan asks gently and with concern as they reach across the table and hold each other's hand.

"I'm holding up, darling, but I can't bear to stay here much longer. It feels strange being separated from you and in a cell. I much prefer Freeway hogging the covers," Jennifer replies managing a smile.

Jonathan manages a smile. "Oh, darling, I miss you so much!" he exclaims as he touches her face.

"I miss you too! How are Max and Freeway?"

"Max is worried about you, and Freeway senses something is not right."

"Jonathan, I can't believe this!" Jennifer exclaims. "I feel like this is a nightmare. We came home from a peaceful and romantic vacation only to find a body in our living room this morning, and I'm charged with the stranger's murder."

"I know. I keep feeling like I'm going to wake up tomorrow to find out that the body along with your arrest was just a nightmare."

"I would be in better spirits if we only knew who framed me," Jennifer replies with disappointment.

"Don't worry. We're going to find out just as soon as we get you out on bail. I'm confident Perry can convince the judge to let you out of this awful place," Jonathan says reassuringly with a smile. "Trust me," he tells her as he kisses Jennifer on her hand.

"I trust you, darling, and I have faith in Perry's ability to get me out of this awful place. I know we'll get through this together as always. I know you. You won't rest until we clear my name. You could never let them keep me in prison or face trial. You want us to take down the real killer himself, and we will. I want to see him punished just as much as you do. If not more so,"Jennifer tells Jonathan as she reaches over and touches his face. She kisses him on the cheek.

"I'll never know what I did to deserve you," Jonathan tells Jennifer with a smile holding onto her hand as she continues to touch his face for a few more moments.

"That goes for me too," Jennifer replies with a smile as they hold onto each others' hands. "You're the best thing that has ever happened to me," she says her voice breaking.

Jonathan is too distraught to say anything. He reaches over and touches her wedding ring.

"That ring is never coming off, darling," Jennifer tells him as she reaches over and touches his wedding band. Jonathan smiles as he reaches over and kisses her on the cheek. "Does Perry know what time the bailing hearing is going to be yet?"

"It won't be till Monday with the weekend being tomorrow," Jonathan replies his voice now breaking.

"Monday?!" Jennifer asks in shock. "You mean we have to be separated for three nights?!"

"I am afraid so. But they're going to be the longest three nights of my life," Jonathan says with a frown.

Unable to remain strong he looks down at the hand holding her wedding ring. Jennifer reaches over and kisses Jonathan on the lips.

"They're going to be the longest three nights of my life for me too, but think how much more we'll enjoy being with each other once I get out of here," Jennifer replies managing a wink.

Jonathan looks up at her and smiles. "You're an incredible woman," he tells her admiring her brave and strong spirit.

"You're an incredible man," Jennifer tells him with sincerity.

He reaches over and kisses her behind her ear causing Jennifer to chuckle.

The bailiff comes up to Jennifer.

"Time is up," she says looking at Jennifer seriously.

"Oh, you're all heart," Jennifer replies seriously with a sigh. "I hope you smile when you're off duty," she says rising. Jonathan smiles at her humor and sarcasm.  He watches her as the bailiff leads her away. Just as she turns to leave, she stops for a moment and looks over at Jonathan who is rising from his seat.

"I love you, darling!" Jennifer exclaims her voice breaking as tears come into her eyes.

"I love you, too!" Jonathan exclaims as tears come into his eyes as he watches the bailiff take Jennifer away.

He stares after her as tears stream down his face.

A House In Santa Barbara That Night

Frank and his girlfriend are sitting around the fireplace. Frank is pouring Champagne into their glasses as they sit next to each other on the floor.

"I'm glad to see that my scheme went off without a hitch. Mrs. Jonathan Hart is now spending the night in prison thanks to us. And Mr. Jonathan Hart is spending a lonely evening by himself. Here's to framing Jennifer Hart, Marilyn," he says with a mischievous grin as they click their glasses in a toast. "I waited three years for this sweet revenge," he says as he places his glass down.

"Frank, what are you doing?" Marilyn asks as Frank walks over to the coffee table.

"Just one more thing I have to do before we drink the Champagne," he replies as he picks up a photograph of Jonathan and Jennifer from the table.

"What are you going to do with that?"

"Watch," Frank replies with a devious grin. He picks up a match from the table and lights the photograph on fire. He walks over to the fireplace. He continues looking over the picture that is burning that he lit on fire.

"I hope you say your prayers before bed because you're going to need them to face time in prison. Goodbye, Mrs. Jonathan Hart!" Frank exclaims with a laugh before throwing the photograph into the fire.

Hart House Night

Jonathan is restless and struggling to sleep knowing Jennifer is having to spend the night in jail, and he is helpless to get her out until Monday. He is feeling very low and depressed. He feels lost and lonely without her. He turns on a lamp and throws the covers off of him. He is wearing the same matching robe that he was wearing earlier that day. He puts on his slippers that are laying on the floor. He walks toward the door and shuts it quietly after walking out of the bedroom. He slowly makes his way down the stairs with his hands in the pockets of his robe. He is staring down as he walks into the foyer after coming down the last step. He slowly walks into the living room. He turns on a lamp by the nearest couch in the room as his thoughts are filled with so many happy memories that he and Jennifer had shared together in this very room in the past. He glances around the room. Out of a corner of his eye he notices a picture of Jennifer taken a few years after their marriage. The picture is the same one that Frank accidentally knocked over the night before which is now in a different frame with glass. The photograph sits at the very spot as it was once before in the old frame. Jonathan makes his way over to the piano and picks up the picture.

As he looks over the photograph he remembers when this photograph was taken. It was taken on their jet on their way to Africa soon after they have solved Sam Robert's death and sought justice for his murder. He hears voices in his head as he remembers this particular memory from what seems like forever ago.

"You are beautiful, you know that?" Jonathan says.

"I know," Jennifer replies coyly.

Jonathan manages a slight chuckle at remembering that moment as he continues staring at the beautiful photograph of Jennifer before placing it back down. His eyes comes across the other photograph next to it. This particular photograph features himself as well. It was also taken on their jet sometime during that flight. He picks it up and looks at it.

Jonathan continues to stare at the photograph of them together as a flood of memories that he had shared with Jennifer over the years come pouring into his mind. He finds himself reliving those moments.

Jonathan's mind returns to the present as the door to the kitchen opens. Max walks in wearing his pajamas and robe with Freeway walking in behind him.

"Hey, Mr. H, what are you doin' up?" Max asks Jonathan who is still looking over the photograph.

"I couldn't sleep, Max," Jonathan replies as his mind is still on Jennifer. He gently moves his hand over Jennifer's cheek in the photo.

"You better try to get some. You're gettin' up early to visit Mrs. H," Max tells him with concern as he walks over to him. Jonathan places the photograph back down on the piano.

"I miss her so much it hurts," Jonathan says turning around to face him.

"I know. I miss her too. You'll be together again soon. It is a good thing you got Mason to be Mrs. H's attorney. You couldn't have gotten a better defense attorney than that guy."

"I somehow feel I let her down," Jonathan confesses sitting down on the piano bench.

"What are you talkin' about, Mr. H? You're doin' all you can. She couldn't ask for a better husband than you."

"I just somehow feel like her being framed for murder is my fault. What if the person responsible for framing Jennifer did it to get revenge on me?"

"Then they're a piece of work. Killin' that guy and plantin' his body in this room with incriminatin'  letters to frame Mrs. H just to get revenge on you is sick. Anyone who would go to that extreme is a real nutcase."

Jonathan nods his head in agreement. "I just feel so helpless," Jonathan says. "I wish there was something I could have done to get Jennifer out on bail. I hate to think of her spending three nights away in prison."

Max takes a seat beside Jonathan on the bench and places a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Mr. H, you haven't failed Mrs. H. The only person responsible for her spendin'  the night in jail is that jerk," he replies in a gentle voice. "If someone is tryin' to get revenge on you they should be the one feelin' guilty not you. You told me how Mrs. H reacted when you saw her tonight. If she doesn't blame you you shouldn't be so hard on yourself. She is a tough woman. She can get through this."

"Before you came in, Max, I was traveling down memory lane. I was thinking about all of the happy times Jennifer and I shared together," Jonathan replies holding up his hand with his wedding band and looking at it.

"You and Mrs. H will have many more times like that once she gets out of that joint," Max says reassuringly as he notices Jonathan looking at his wedding band.

"You know what she told me tonight? That it was never coming off," Jonathan says as he continues to look at the band.

"Well, I would hope she would expect you to always wear that weddin' band. I mean you and her are married. Most couples wear their rings until death do them part."

"I was talking about her wedding ring. When they book you they make you take off any personal belongings. You have to make a request for things like watches. But Jennifer wasn't only wearing her watch. She was wearing her wedding ring."

"I'm sorry, but I fail to see what you're gettin' at, Mr. H," Max replies baffled trying to figure out what Jonathan's point is.

"I just thought it was very touching she said that. She knows I would never suspect her of taking her ring off."

"You and Mrs. H have a marriage that only some couples dream about. You not only respect each other. You care and love one another. And you know somethin'? I'm proud of you both," Max says with a smile touching Jonathan's other hand.

"Thank you, Max," Jonathan replies looking up at him managing a smile. "Jennifer is an incredible woman," Jonathan says with great respect.

"That she is. Now why don't you get some sleep? You're ain't goin' to be of any help to Mrs. H if you don't get any rest."

Jonathan nods and rises from his seat. He starts to head out when he stops and turns to Max. "What are you doing up by the way?"

"Same thing. I couldn't sleep worryin' about Mrs. H and same goes for Freeway," Max replies pointing to the dog who is lying on the carpet looking up at them sadly.  Freeway whines. "So I decided to get me some cookies and milk," Max says as Jonathan walks over to Freeway and picks him up.

"Come on, boy. You can sleep with daddy tonight. I much rather have you hogging the covers than sleeping by myself," Jonathan tells Freeway as he pets him and kisses him lovingly. Freeway barks as Jonathan heads out of the living room carrying the dog. "Goodnight, Max," Jonathan tells him as he walks into the foyer. Max is smiling as he watches him while he continues to sit on the bench.

"Goodnight, Mr. H," Max tells him admiring Jonathan's brave spirit as he watches Jonathan walk up the steps.

Los Angeles County Courthouse

Jennifer's bail hearing is taking place in one of the courtrooms. Jennifer is seated with Perry Mason on the right for the defense and defendant while the prosecutor is standing behind his table on the left side. Jonathan and Max are seated directly behind Jennifer in the last row. The district attorney has brown hair and eyes. He is in his early thirties. The judge, in his mid fifties, is seated behind the bench listening to the district attorney.

"Your Honor, far as I am concerned Jennifer Hart should not be granted bail. I am aware that she and her wealthy husband, Jonathan Hart, who is CEO of Hart Industries, help the police from time to time. I think since it is Mrs. Jonathan Hart being the defendant in this case it should not be taken into consideration by any means. Mr. Hart may be wealthy and have connections, but that doesn't grant him or his wife any special privileges," the district attorney says firmly as he shoots Jonathan and Jennifer a harsh look.

"Objection, Your Honor," Perry replies as he rises from his seat. "The prosecutor is merely only trying to make my client and his wife appear to be wealthy citizens who think they are above the law. While it is true Jonathan Hart is a very wealthy man he is also a man of character. He and the defendant are both respectful citizens. In fact this is the first time that Mrs. Hart has been charged with any crime."

"I have to remind counsel that Mrs. Hart was once arrested at a singles place, Pod And Jerry's, during a raid several years ago. It was raided on account of a brawl which was started by the defendant. I wonder if Mr. Hart has neglected to tell Mr. Mason."

"On the contrary Jonathan Hart has told me about the raid, and I would like to remind the district attorney that Mrs. Hart was not in any way responsible for the brawl. She was a victim of an attempt by an old acquaintance's of her husband, Fred Brunis, in a scheme to break up their marriage. Jennifer Hart was just an innocent bystander when a man made a pass at her, and Fred pretended to intervene. That is when the brawl started," Perry says turning to face the prosecutor.

"I know all the circumstances surrounding the brawl, Mr. Mason," the district attorney replies turning to face Perry. "But nevertheless Mrs. Jonathan Hart was present when the brawl took place," he says turning to face the judge.

"Objection sustained," the judge says turning to the prosecutor. Perry retakes his seat.

"Despite Mr. Mason claiming the Harts are such honest and respectful citizens of Los Angeles, I would like to add that this is a case of murder which is a very serious crime. My main concern is that if Mrs. Hart is released on bail she and Mr. Hart will resort to desperate and illegal ways to get the charges dropped so therefore I request the court will deny bail. And before counsel reminds me that all the evidence I have so far are circumstantial he and this court should know that this morning some new evidence has come to my attention."

Jonathan and Max stare at each other in shock and worry. Jennifer and Perry also exchange looks of shock and alarm.

"I have this evidence with me now," the district attorney continues. "And I shall present them to you now, counsel, and Your Honor if I may."

"What is this evidence?" the judge asks.

"Photographs that I have received in the mail this morning, and I have to say they certainly do not paint a pretty picture for the defendant," the prosecutor replies with a smug look as he turns his attention to Jennifer. She looks at him nervously before turning to look at Jonathan.

"Keep your remarks to yourself, and just hand us the photographs!" the judge says firmly giving the district attorney a look showing him that he has crossed a line.

"Right away," the district attorney replies with a smile. He picks up an envelope from the table and hands it to Perry.

Perry takes the envelope and opens it. He takes out the photographs and looks them over with Jennifer looking over them from her chair. She gasps in shock as she puts a hand up to her mouth. "Give me a minute, please, Your Honor," he says looking up at the judge. He hands the photographs over to Jennifer. "Can you explain this?" he asks.

"No," Jennifer replies. "This is the first time I have seen these photographs."

Perry nods as he places the photographs back in the envelope before handing them to the district attorney. He takes the envelope over to the bench so the judge can see them. The judge takes the envelope and takes out the photographs. He looks them over carefully before placing them back in the envelope. He hands them to the district attorney who walks back to his seat.

"Do you have anything you would like to say about this new evidence that has come to this court's attention, Mr. Mason?" the judge asks as the district attorney sits back down.

"Yes, Your Honor," Perry replies as he rises. "The defense admits that those photographs give the district attorney a stronger case against my client, but I would still like to ask this court to grant bail. Mr. Hart has confided in me shortly after the arrest that he will be investigating on his own to prove his wife's innocence. If bail is granted the defendant will be working aside her husband as always to prove her innocence."

"I object, Your Honor!" the district attorney exclaims rising outraged at what he just heard. "Since Mr. and Mrs. Hart are willing to work together to prove Mrs. Jonathan Hart's innocence I think this gives the prosecution and this court a reason to question how they may go about doing this. I beg the court to please think carefully before granting bail."

"This procedure is very unusual you have to admit, Mr. Mason," the judge replies rubbing his chin as he nods his head. "Have you discussed this with your client and her husband?"

"Yes, I have, and they are fully aware of the consequences they may face if they do anything that is illegal. They are also willing to come to a compromise if bail is granted."

"If bail is granted, Your Honor, I think Mr. and Mrs. Hart should be allowed with only a limited amount of money for them to live on until it can be proven if Jennifer Hart committed murder or was framed," the district attorney says turning to face Jennifer with a harsh look. She looks over at Jonathan who places a comforting hand on hers as they wait for the judge's decision.

"After hearing both sides and despite the photographs I have looked at that are very incriminating bail is granted at three hundred million dollars. Only Mr. and Mrs. Hart won't have to worry about having a limited income," the judge replies before banging his gavel. He rises from his seat. The district attorney sighs in disappointment. Jonathan rushes over to Jennifer with Max behind him. Jonathan and Jennifer embrace as Perry and Max look on.

"Thank you, Perry," Jonathan says with a smile extending his hand. Perry shakes it.

"You're welcome. I just hope you and Jennifer haven't bitten off more than you can chew."

"You don't have to worry about 'em, Mr. Mason," Max tells Perry. "When it comes to amateur sleuths there ain't a better team than Mr. and Mrs. H," Max assures him with a smile.

"I wouldn't go that far, Max," Jonathan replies as he wraps his arm around Jennifer.

"I just can't believe that prosecutor. He was pushing so hard to keep me locked up," Jennifer says with disbelief. "Is he any relation to Hamilton Burger?"

Perry looks at Jennifer with a slight smile. "No, Talman is just fresh out of college eager to get his feet in the door," he replies as he picks up his briefcase.

"He put his foot in his mouth at one point. I didn't like that remark he made about Jennifer," Jonathan replies with a frown."

"Mr. Mason, I see you are still at it," Talman says approaching them. "I can't actually believe you took on this case."

"Oh, why is that?" Perry asks giving him a serious look.

"Your client is guilty. You'll have egg on your face before you know it. Have a good day," he replies with a smug before walking away from the courtroom.

"If anyone is goin' to have egg on his face it'll be him," Max says in disgust. "I can't stand that guy."

"You're not the only one," Jonathan replies.

"He may not be related to Burger, but he definitely has his arrogant attitude," Jennifer says rolling her eyes.

A House In Santa Barbara

Frank and Marilyn are watching the local news channel in their home when a female news reporter comes on the screen. She is holding a microphone and is appearing outside the Los Angeles County Courthouse with other reporters in attendance.

"We just received word that the bail for Mrs. Jonathan Hart has been granted at three hundred million dollars. The prosecutor on the case,  Herbert Talman, put up a good fight to keep the judge from granting bail. Even when new evidence was brought forth it didn't stop Perry Mason from coming to Jennifer Hart's defense."

Just then Jonathan and Jennifer come walking out of the courthouse hand in hand with Max behind them while Perry is ahead of them. They rush to get to their cars before they are hounded by the press.

"Hold on. Here comes the Harts and Mr. Mason. We'll see if we can get a comment from them," the reporter says turning to face the camera. She rushes over to them along with the other reporters from other news channels and newspapers.

"Mr. Hart, how do you feel about your wife being charged with murder?" a reporter shouts as the cameras and rest of the reporters get in Jonathan's face overwhelming him and Jennifer as they make their way to the Corniche.

"No comment," Jonathan replies as he opens the backdoor.

"Mrs. Hart, what was it like spending the night in jail?" another reporter asks as Jennifer gets in.

"No comment," Jennifer replies with a sigh.

"What is your name?" one reporter asks turning their attention to Max who is heading to the driver's side.

"That is none of your business. Leave us alone," Max tells them annoyed as he gets in and shuts the door.

"Mr. Hart, do you have any comment you wish to make at this time? Do you think this new evidence will make it harder to prove your wife's innocence?" the female reporter asks as they approach Jonathan who is seated next to Jennifer. "Do you think your wife is guilty?"

Enraged by the question Jonathan grabs the microphone. "My wife and I will not be answering any questions so it may be in your best interest to leave us alone," he says with anger in his voice as he speaks into the microphone.  He hands it back to the reporter who is stunned by Jonathan's reaction. She is speechless as the Harts and Max roll up their windows and drive off.

Frank walks over to the TV and turns it off.

"Frank, Perry Mason getting Jennifer Hart out on bail changes things," Marilyn says panicky.

"Why?" he asks as he turns around. He walks back over to where she is sitting on the couch.

"Perry Mason is the best defense attorney in California. There is no way we're going to get away with framing Jonathan Hart's wife now."

"That's where you are wrong. Perry Mason no longer has his faithful secretary, Della Street, working for him. Paul Drake, who was his private investigator, is no longer in business so we don't have anything to worry about. Jonathan and Jennifer Hart may be smart, but they are certainly not in the same league as Mason and Drake."

"I think you're underestimating them."

"No, I am not. If anyone is underestimating anyone it  is you underestimating me," Frank replies taking a seat beside her. "Do you want out?"

"No, I don't want out. I am just scared. I didn't think Perry Mason would get in the picture."

"Who did you think Jonathan Hart was going to get for his wife as a defense attorney? Some young man right out of college or someone who doesn't have Mason's years of experience?"

"Of course not. I just didn't think it would be Perry Mason. I mean he was planning to retire. He made an announcement months ago he was going to retire from his law practice to become a judge."

"I knew Hart had connections, but I never figured in a millions years he knew the great defense attorney himself. I got to hand it to him," Frank says with a grin.

"Why do you sound so happy about all this?" Marilyn asks confused.

"It makes my scheme even better. It may kill two birds with one stone. If we can get away with the murder then Perry Mason may be giving up his law practice forever," he says with a chuckle. "This news has just made my week even better. I'm going to pour us some more Champagne." He kisses Marilyn on the cheek and walks out of the living room leaving Marilyn worried wondering if her boyfriend was underestimating Perry and the Harts.

Hart House

Jonathan and Jennifer are sitting in the living room on a couch. Perry Mason is sitting on the couch across from them. He is holding the envelope in his hand.

"I managed to talk the district attorney into letting me have these photographs," Perry says taking the photographs out of the envelope. "Jennifer, I want you to get a good look at those photographs. Does anything about these photographs seem familiar to you? Could these pictures been taken anywhere you went before you and Jonathan left for your cabin?"

He rises from his seat and walks over to Jennifer. He hands her the photographs. He stands by as Jennifer takes the photographs. She looks over them one at a time with Jonathan looking over her shoulder. The first photograph shows her in a hotel room by herself. It appears to have been taken across the roof of a building nearby as she is standing near the window.

"Yes, this photograph looks like when I showed up to interview a man at The Beverly Hills Hotel just a few weeks before we left for our cabin. The man gave his name as Roger Smith."

"Smith? Roger Smith?" Jonathan asks in disbelief.

"I couldn't believe it either when I heard the name. I never got to meet him. I spoke with his assistant. When I showed up that afternoon to meet him in his room as he requested he never showed up. I waited an hour for him. I dismissed it as a practical joke."

"What were you going to interview this Roger Smith about?" Perry asks.

"I have no idea.  When his assistant called to set up the interview only thing he would tell me was this was a story of a lifetime and to show up at the hotel at two o' clock."

"Did anyone see you when you showed up at the hotel?"

"Only the desk clerk. He gave me the key which I returned to him when I decided to leave."

"What was the assistant's name? Can you recall?"

"No, I am afraid I cannot," Jennifer replies with a sigh.

Max walks into the living room through the kitchen with ice tea in glasses on a tray.

"Here you are, Mr. and Mrs. H. I thought you and Mr. Mason would like some ice tea," he says walking over to the coffee table. He places the tray on the table. "I figured you may be dyin' of thirst after spendin' three nights in prison."

"Max, I didn't exactly starve. They do feed prisoners," Jennifer says.

"Don't forget I brought her over dinner every night," Jonathan reminds him.

"Well, look at it as my welcome home present," Max says shrugging his shoulders. "I missed waitin' on Mrs. H," Max adds with a smile.

"Oh, thank you! I missed you waiting on me. Thanks for the tea. I'll probably need it to get through the day anyway," Jennifer replies with a smile.

"No luck, huh?"

"Not so far," Jonathan tells him.

"Excuse me for interruptin', but could I get you anythin' to eat, Mr. Mason?"

"No, thank you just the same, Max," Perry replies with a smile.

Max walks over to a chair and takes a seat.

"Take a look at the next photograph," Perry tells Jennifer.

Jennifer puts the photograph she is looking at aside. The next one shows Jennifer sitting on the bed with the dead man standing in front of her. She gasps.

"This is the photograph that caught my attention in the courtroom this morning," Jennifer says looking at the picture in shock.

"It looks like this photograph was altered to incriminate Jennifer," Jonathan replies looking up at Perry.

"I agree. I just hope you and Jennifer can prove it for her sake," Perry says. "Look at the next one."

Jennifer puts it aside and takes a look at the third photograph. This one shows her and the deceased sitting at a table in a crowded restaurant together.

"Someone was keeping a close eye on Jennifer," Jonathan says. "Whoever took these photographs must have known when we were going up to Deerlake and when we were returning home."

"Where were you when this picture was taken?" Perry asks.

"I was having lunch at La Scala. I often go there for lunch. It was several days after I went to the hotel. And no one I know saw me. Scary to think I was being followed," Jennifer says as she and Jonathan exchange glances.

"This doesn't help your case at all," Perry replies with a sigh as he takes the photographs and places them back in the envelope. "I must be heading back to the office now. Give me a call when you find out anything," he says as he places the envelope on a table by the couch facing the fireplace. "I can find my way out," he says as he walks over to the other couch. He picks up his briefcase off of the floor and heads toward the front door in the foyer.

"Oh, Jonathan, don't forget what I said about Jennifer being the defendant," Perry says as he opens the door.

"I won't. Thank you again, Perry," Jonathan replies looking up at him.

"You can thank me by staying out of trouble if possible," Perry replies as he stops in the doorway. "Try to see to it that they don't get into mischief," he says turning to face Max.

"I'll do my best, Mr. Mason, but trust me it ain't easy," Max tells him.

Perry walks out shutting the door behind him.

"I don't know about you, darling, but I could do with some ice tea," Jennifer says as she rises from the coffee table and picks up a glass.

"So could I, darling," Jonathan replies as he reaches over and picks up a glass.

Freeway jumps up on Jennifer's lap taking Jonathan and Jennifer by surprise. Jennifer managed to get her glass out of the way before Freeway knocked it out of her hand.

"Freeway, did you miss mommy?" Jennifer asks with a smile.

Freeway barks.

"He certainly did. He hogged the covers those three nights you were away. It's a wonder I managed to get any sleep at all," Jonathan tells her. "I'm so glad you're home, darling," Jonathan says with a smile.

"Thank you! I'm so glad to be home," Jennifer replies with a smile.

"The same here, Mrs. H," Max says from his seat with a grin.

"Thank you, Max," Jennifer replies. "Darling, did you hear what Perry just said?" Jennifer asks turning back to her husband.

"Hear Perry say about what, darling?" Jonathan asks taking a sip of the tea.

"Jonathan, you know what I mean! We can't get into mischief," Jennifer tells him seriously.

"What mischief?" Jonathan asks innocently.

"You know what I mean. The kind we always find ourselves in when we get mixed up in these kind of things."

"I'll say. You two better watch what you get yourselves into, Mr. and Mrs. H. I'm gonna try to get you to stay out of trouble," he says giving Jonathan a look. "And I don't want no arguments. Come on, Freeway," Max says rising from his seat. "Time for a walk."

Freeway curls up on Jennifer's lap reluctant to move. "I think he prefers to stay with me," Jennifer replies touched as she pets the dog.

"I don't want to hurt Freeway's feelings, but I would prefer to have you all to myself. I am the one whose covers he hogged all night long," Jonathan says.

"You hear that, pup?" Max asks walking over and picking up Freeway. "That's our cue," he tells Freeway as they head out of the room after putting the dog down on the floor.

"Thanks, Max," Jonathan shouts after him as Max opens the door with Freeway walking out ahead of him.

"You ready to head to Beverly Hills?" Jonathan asks as Jennifer takes a sip of her tea. They hear the front door shut.

Front Gate

A few minutes later the front gate opens, and Jonathan drives their Mercedes through. They turn left as the gate closes. They are unaware that the same mysterious man, who was snapping pictures of Jennifer weeks ago as Max was driving her away, is watching them drive out of sight. He picks up the mobile car phone and dials a number. After a few seconds his call is answered.

"I am parked near their front gate. They just took off. Jonathan and Jennifer Hart are taking off toward The Beverly Hills Hotel it seems. They turned left in that direction. What do you want me to do? Follow them?"

"No, don't do that," Frank replies from the other end of the line. "Jonathan Hart will know they're being followed no matter how clever you are. You wait a few minutes and then drive to the hotel. Do you understand me?"

"Yes, sir."

"Good. Call me from the telephone in the lobby after they're gone. I'll give you further instructions then."

"I don't like this," the young man tells him nervously.

"I'm not paying you to like it. I'm paying you to do this job. Is that too difficult to ask?!" Frank asks annoyed losing his patience.

 "No."

"Then just do what I tell you. I do not give a damn whether you like what you're doing or not," Frank snaps before hanging up.

The young man hangs up the receiver. He sighs as he starts up the engine and drives off heading in the direction of The Beverly Hills Hotel.

The Beverly Hills Hotel

Jonathan and Jennifer walk into the grand lobby of the famous and luxurious The Beverly Hills Hotel a short time later. They walk up to the front desk. They stand behind a couple finishing checking into their room. After waiting a few seconds they come right up to the desk.

"Good afternoon. Welcome to The Beverly Hills Hotel," the young desk clerk, who is in his thirties, greets the Harts with a smile. "What name is the reservation?"

"We're not here to check in," Jonathan explains. "We would like to know if a Roger Smith is a guest here."

"I'm sorry, but we're not allowed to give out that information," the desk clerk replies. "We respect our guests' privacy."

"I wouldn't ask you to go against the hotel's policy, but this is a matter of life and death."

"Wait a minute. Your face looks familiar to me. Don't I know you from somewhere?" the clerk asks recognizing Jennifer.

"Uh, no, you must be mistaken. Perhaps it was my double," Jennifer replies with a smile hoping he wouldn't realize he saw her on the news channel or newspaper after her arrest.

"You know what they say. Everyone has a twin," Jonathan tells him.

"Yes, I'm sorry. It is just she looks so familiar to me."

"There is no need to apologize. It is not the first time I had been mistaken for someone else," Jennifer says.

"Look, is there anyway I can convince you to tell me if Roger Smith is staying at this hotel?"

"I'm afraid not. I never go against hotel policies."

"As a businessman myself I respect a man of integrity," Jonathan tells him with a smile. "If you ever decide to look for another line of business I am in the market for an honest man like yourself," Jonathan says patting him on the shoulder.

"No," the man says with a smile.

"I didn't mean right now."

"And I did not appreciate you trying to bribe me, sir."

"Bribe? Did I try to bribe this man, darling?" Jonathan asks innocently turning to Jennifer.

"Oh, no. You would never do such a thing, darling," Jennifer replies with a smile as she pats him gently on the face.

"Could you at least tell me where the pay phones are?" Jonathan asks.

"Of course. They're on the wall facing the entrance. The phones are right behind you. You can't miss them."

"Thank you. And do keep up the good work!" Jonathan tells him shooting him a wink. "I was just trying to keep you on your toes," he says shaking the man's hand.  He walks off leaving the clerk with a look of bewilderment.

"He is the manager of a hotel. He can't help, but test every employee's ethics when we go to another hotel establishment.  It is a habit he can't seem to break. I've been trying to break him of it," Jennifer says in a whisper as she leans forward acting as if she is embarrassed by Jonathan's performance.

"I understand, madam. What is the name of the hotel?"

"The Waldorf Astoria," Jennifer replies nonchalantly as she starts to walk away.

"Oh, The Waldorf Astoria," the desk clerk replies with a smile. His face suddenly becomes white. "I just said no to the manager of The Waldorf Astoria?!!!" the desk clerk asks in shock stuttering. He gasps and falls to the floor after fainting. Everyone in the lobby stops what they're doing. They turn to look at Jennifer who looks behind her and sees the desk clerk has fainted.

"Uh, poor man! I guess he is not used to meeting famous people outside Hollywood!" Jennifer exclaims with a smile embarrassed. She was not expecting the desk clerk to be so in shock that he would pass out. "He definitely needs a vacation," Jennifer adds with a frown shaking her head in disbelief. The people at the lobby watch her head toward the pay phones by the door before going back to their business. Jennifer walks over to Jonathan who is standing by one of the pay phones on the wall.

"What did you say that made the clerk pass out?" Jonathan asks wondering what happened.

"I just told him you are the manager for The Waldorf Astoria," Jennifer replies.

"What did you do that for?"

"Well, I didn't think it would make him have a fainting spell."

"I thought you didn't want us to get into mischief?" Jonathan asks.

"I don't think lying is the same as attempted bribery," Jennifer replies.

Jonathan grins as he picks up the receiver.

"Are you going to call Perry?"

"No, I am going to try something else."

"What?"

"Remember My Favorite Wife?" Jonathan asks imitating Cary Grant as he dials a number.

Jennifer grins as she nods her head. Jonathan nods his head.  After a few seconds his call is answered.

"The Beverly Hills Hotel," the desk clerk replies answering Jonathan's call from the front desk.

"Hello, this is Mr. Nicholas Arden. Could you kindly page Mr. Roger Smith? I've tried calling his room, but he hasn't been answering. I need to get in touch with him soon as possible. Could you do me this favor, my good man? I would greatly appreciate it," Jonathan says lowing his voice as he continues imitating Cary. Jennifer smiles as she watches her husband carry on this impersonation.

"Yes, I'd be more than happy to, Mr. Arden," the desk clerk replies. "One moment, please."

"Take your time, take your time," Jonathan replies.

The desk clerk puts the receiver down on the desk and motions to a young man in his teens who is entering the lobby. He walks over to the front desk.

"Bobby, page Mr. Roger Smith, please. He has a telephone call from a Mr. Nicholas Arden," he tells the young man.

"Yes, sir," Bobby replies. "Paging Mr. Roger Smith," Bobby shouts as he walks around trying to find the man. "Mr. Roger Smith, you have a telephone call. Mr. Roger Smith."

Just as he walks out of the lobby continuing to page the man, Jonathan hands Jennifer the receiver.

"Here, if Mr. Smith answers hang up," Jonathan says in his normal voice handing her the receiver.

Jennifer nods as Jonathan follows Bobby out as he carries on his assignment of paging Roger Smith. Just as the desk clerk turns around he notices Jennifer. She puts the receiver up to her mouth and pretends to be carrying on a conversation on the telephone.

"Yes, we'll be heading back to New York in a few days," Jennifer says into the receiver. "Oh, how is California? I love the sights and the weather, but I much prefer living in New York. Nothing like Christmas in New York with all the snow and The Rockettes. How is everything in Manhattan?"

Meanwhile Jonathan is still following Bobby. They head toward the doors leading to the pool outside. Bobby opens the door and heads out where the guests are enjoying themselves in the pool or relaxing in a chair at a table.

"Paging Mr. Roger Smith. Mr. Roger Smith, you have a telephone call from Mr. Nicholas Arden. Mr. Roger Smith, you have a telephone call. Mr. Roger Smith," Bobby shouts as he walks around. Jonathan stands near the pool watching the young teen continue to page "the guest."

Hotel Lobby Minutes Later

Meanwhile Jennifer is still standing at the pay phone acting as if she is talking to someone on the other end of the line as the desk clerk is still standing behind the desk. He eyes Jennifer just as a few guests approach him. Bobby walks back into the lobby with Jonathan close behind him. Jonathan walks over to Jennifer. She sighs in relief at seeing Jonathan coming back. She hangs up the receiver.

"Thank goodness! I was getting ready to run out of things to say. I take it no Roger Smith?"

"No, he either checked out or he was the man in those photographs."

"He must had been that man in the photographs using an alias. I wouldn't have gotten the key to his room if there was no Roger Smith unless that Roger Smith never was a guest."

"I think Roger Smith never was a guest except in the imagination of the killer," Jonathan says. "Let's get out of here. I have a better idea."

Jonathan takes Jennifer by the hand as they head out of the hotel. Just then the man, who followed them to the hotel, walks into the lobby. He watches as Jonathan and Jennifer get into the Mercedes. Jonathan starts the engine, and they start to drive away. The man smiles upon seeing Jonathan and Jennifer Hart drive off! He walks over to the desk clerk who just finished checking in a guest. He takes out his wallet and hands him three million dollars.

"Here you go! Superb performance!" he exclaims with a grin. "I was watching it out of sight. Jennifer Hart certainly is just as clever as her husband. You fainting made it just perfect. You had Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Hart eating out of the palm of your hand."

"Anytime. I'm always willing to bend the rules to make money the easy way," the desk clerk replies with a devious grin.

"You're a man after my own heart," the man says as he places the wallet back into his pocket. He walks over to a pay phone and dials a number. After waiting a few seconds, Frank's voice comes over the other end of the line.

"What happened?"

"It went just as you expected. Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Hart fell for the desk clerk's act."

"Good. Continue to follow them and keep me posted," he replies before hanging up the receiver.

A Street In Beverly Hills

Jonathan and Jennifer are driving down a street in their car.

"Jonathan, this is not the way to La Scala. This is the direction toward our house," Jennifer says taken by surprise as Jonathan turns left. "What are you up to?" Jennifer asks turning to him with a look of suspicion.

"I don't think we'll have anymore success at the restaurant than we did at the hotel. This is all too neat. There were not any bugs found anywhere at our home and far as we can tell this Roger Smith doesn't even exist."

"Do you think we could have been lied to?  That someone has been following our every move?"

"Yes, I do. I think the desk clerk was putting on an act. He seemed way too honest."

"Maybe he is just one of the few people that couldn't be bought off."

"Darling, just about everyone has a price. Have you ever seen any movie or show where someone couldn't be bought off if the right price had been offered?"

"Now that you say that, I think you're right, darling. Everything has been done too neatly. Whoever is framing me is going to a lot of trouble to see to it that I am found guilty."

"Without any evidence to prove your innocence there would be no chance of Perry ever proving you innocent. The real killer has not left any loose ends and has covered up his tracks too well. I do not know who is framing you, but when I find out they're going to wish they had not even heard of the name of Jonathan Hart," Jonathan replies sternly with a frown.

"I am glad I am never on your bad side," Jennifer replies with a smile.

Twenty minutes later the man is once again catching up to the Harts in his truck. As he sees Jonathan and Jennifer turn into Bel Air their Mercedes disappears out of sight before he has a chance to follow them. He sighs annoyed. After putting on his blinker he pulls over on the side of the road. Just as he picks up the mobile car phone the door flings open. Jonathan and Jennifer stand outside the car. The man stares at them thunderstruck! He has been caught!

"Drop the telephone NOW!" Jonathan orders firmly raising his voice. "Or do I need to call Lieutenant Grey of the LAPD?"

The man, who is still speechless, slowly places the phone down.

"Get out of the car, and keep your hands on the hood!" Jonathan orders giving the man a harsh look.  He stands aside to allow the man to get out. Jennifer stands aside out of the way. She stands across from her husband. The man rises from the seat and gets out of the car. Just as Jonathan grabs him by the arm he hits Jonathan hard in the stomach. Jonathan leans over wincing in pain as the man hurries over to the Mercedes.

"Darling, are you all right?" Jennifer asks as she walks up to her husband. She gets down on her knees.

"I am fine. I am just sore," Jonathan replies getting up to his feet.

Just as the man is about to break the window of the door from the driver's side of the vehicle with his elbow Jonathan and Jennifer come up to him. Jonathan grabs him by the other arm and smacks his face. He shoves the man onto his back forcing him against the car.

"You can try to escape as much as you want, but it won't do you any good. I have the keys," Jonathan tells him as he brings the car key out of his pocket. "Now I do not want any guessing games. I want answers, and I want them NOW!" Jonathan declares firmly once again showing he means what he is saying. "Are you going to start answering questions or is Jennifer going to have to call Lieutenant Grey to get you to talk? Perry Mason is representing my wife so if I were you I'd start talking!"

He looks from Jonathan to Jennifer frightened. He begins trembling as sweat starts pouring down his face.

"Who is Roger Smith and who is responsible for framing my wife?"

"Do you remember a man who used to work for Hart Industries? His name was Frank Harrison. He was a member of the board. You sent him to prison."

"Does that name ring any bells, darling?" Jennifer asks.

"It certainly does. I remember the name very well. He was one of the first members of the board for Hart Industries. I thought he was a good man until I found out he had been embezzling from the company. He even was stealing from some of our employees in accounting. Stanley managed to find out there had been mishandling of the company's funds. If he hadn't caught on to what Harrison was doing the company and employees would have lost millions of dollars," Jonathan replies turning to face his wife as he still holds a tight grip on the man. "When did Harrison get out of prison? Why wasn't I informed?"

"Frank was released from prison three years ago. I swear to you I have no idea why you were not informed. I do know Frank left Los Angeles soon after his release. He moved to Santa Barbara where he is still living now. He changed his name and started over fresh so no one would know he was once convicted. During those three years in prison Frank swore revenge upon you. He blames you for those years he spent in jail and for ruining his life. He wanted your wife to know what it is like to be caged up. Roger Smith was just a name Frank invented for this ex-con who was sent to prison for the same crime.  Frank gave him a whole new name and identity too. He managed to convince him to go along with the scheme leaving him to believe someone else was going to be killed. I went along with it because Frank and I had gotten to know each other well in prison too. Most of the other prisoners treated me like dirt. I figured I owed him something so I agreed to help him kill Rodriguez and frame your wife for the murder."

"Who took those pictures of Jennifer and had them altered so it would look like Rodriguez was having an affair with her?"

"It was me.  My specialty is photographs and altering them."

"They definitely are," Jennifer says looking at the man in shock. "Those photographs really made me look like I was in the same room with Rodriguez. You couldn't even tell those photographs were altered."

"You better think twice about going after Frank. He'll stop at nothing to get back at you. When he wants something he goes after it. He'll kill me once he finds out you know everything."

"You won't have to worry about your safety because you'll be sitting in a jail cell where no one can lay a hand on you. Not even me," Jonathan replies staring him straight in the face with the harsh look.

"It is your word against mine. I rather Frank kill me than go back to prison."

"You're going to confess everything. You're going to tell the police the truth and let my wife off the hook. If you don't confess the police aren't going to let you go. They're not going to believe you were following us just for the fun of it so you better think long and hard before you say or do anything. Either way you're a dead man."

"I'll call Lieutenant Grey," Jennifer says as she walks over to the other side of the car.

"Put your hands on the hood and keep them there. You're not going anywhere until the police get here," Jonathan tells him as he forces him to turn around.

The man places his hands on the hood with his back toward Jonathan without moving. Jennifer reaches into the car and picks up their mobile car phone. She dials the number of the police.

"Hello. This is Jennifer Hart. Is Lieutenant Grey in? It is important," Jennifer says a few seconds after she waits for her call to be answered.

Without warning the man turns around and kicks Jonathan hard in the stomach before he can react. He pulls out a gun which he aims at Jonathan.

"You come near me, you're going to be the one who is a dead man!" he states firmly shooting him a harsh look.

Jennifer is startled by this twisted turn of events. She is speechless. Jonathan backs away reluctantly as the man heads back to his truck.  He keeps a close eye on Jonathan and Jennifer as he makes the way to the door. He opens the door and gets in with the weapon still aimed at Jonathan. He points the gun out the window as he starts the engine. Just as soon as the engine starts he rolls up the window and locks up the vehicle with the gun pointing in the same direction. He places his foot down on the gas and takes off speeding away fast as possible. Reacting quickly as possible Jonathan and Jennifer hurry into the Mercedes.  Jonathan places his foot down on the gas and takes off driving over the speed limit desperate to catch up. Cars are forced to slam on their brakes and stop as Jonathan drives recklessly.  They honk their horn outraged at the way Jonathan is driving. After only a few miles of driving up ahead the man is nowhere in sight! He managed to get away. Jonathan slows down and brings their car to a stop. He sighs and hits the wheel with his fist.

Hart House Soon After

Jonathan is standing behind the desk in the living room speaking to Perry on the telephone while Jennifer sits on the couch talking to Lieutenant Grey who is standing facing her. Max is standing behind the bar pouring Brandy into two glasses.

"Yes, Perry. Unfortunately I lost him before I could get his license plate. I will. Goodbye." He hangs up the receiver. "Perry wasn't happy that the man got away. I can't blame him. I am not happy with myself at the moment. I never should have let him escape," Jonathan says frustrated walking over to the couch.

"Darling, it wasn't your fault. You did the best you could," Jennifer replies gently turning around to face her husband.

"Jonathan, you're being too hard on yourself. I think if Jennifer had called us sooner he still would have gotten away," Lieutenant Grey says. "I'll put an APB out on him. You know without a license plate it is like trying to find a needle in a haystack especially in California," Lieutenant Grey adds as Max walks over. He hands Jonathan and Jennifer a glass of Brandy as Jonathan sits down next to his wife.

"Thank you, Max," Jennifer says as she and Jonathan take their glass.

"Ain't there somethin' else you can do, lieutenant, to try to catch that scum?" Max asks turning around to face Lieutenant Grey.

"I'm going to call the state prison and find out all I can about Harrison's friends he made while he was put away. I'm sure I can find a name to go along with that description Jennifer gave me. It won't be much help, but at least it will give me something else to go on."

"What about contacting the police in Santa Barbara?" Jennifer asks taking a sip of the Brandy. "He must be heading back there now that he knows we caught onto him."

"Unless he is an idiot he won't be hanging around there for long," Jonathan remarks taking a sip of his Brandy.

" I'm sure he's spilling his guts to Harrison. If he really thinks Harrison will kill him to cover up a loose end he is taking a big chance telling him he got caught and made a narrow escape,” Lieutenant Grey replies.

"In other words you're telling us we may not get close to seeing Harrison put behind bars permanently?" Jennifer asks as she stops sipping the Brandy.

"Not unless you and Jonathan decide to go after Harrison yourselves. I doubt what I am about to tell you will do you any good, but if Harrison does contact you let the local authorities  handle it. I don't have to tell you that Santa Barbara is out of my jurisdiction. The police up there may not like you investigating. If Harrison hadn't changed his identity and moved up there, we'd have a better chance of sending him back to jail for life. Without an address or something else to help track him down you'll need a miracle. Unless getting revenge on you becomes more important than keeping his freedom, it is most likely he won't make any slip-ups. He's a mastermind criminal."

Jonathan and Jennifer look at each other with concern as they continue to sip their Brandy, wondering how they're going to catch Frank Harrison and put him away for life.

A House In Santa Barbara Two Hours Later

The man stands facing Frank and Marilyn in the middle of the living room. Frank slaps him hard across the face much to Marilyn's shock.

"You fool! How could you have let Jonathan Hart catch onto you? Do you realize what you have done?!" he asks losing his temper his voice raising.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Harrison," the man replies taken by surprise at having his face slapped. He touches his face which is hurting from the slap.

"Oh, that apology just changes everything!" Frank exclaims sarcastically with a frown. "If I had known you were going to mess up my scheme I never would have taken you under my wing!"

"I honestly do not know what happened. I was following Jonathan and Jennifer Hart back to their house in Bel Air. I was way behind them. I do not know how it is possible that they caught on," the man stutters. "I'll do anything you expect of me!"

"That's good because you don't have any options after that blunder, my friend! Here is what you're going to do. I'm going to make arrangements for you to get out of this country just in a matter of hours! You are going to go to some country where they never even heard of Hart Industries, and you're going to stay there permanently! If you ever think of sneaking back here to America, you're going to wish you had never laid eyes on me! I had this scheme planned out and working like clockwork until this stupid mistake of yours! Now it is going to cost me, and I'm not taking any chances of going back to that stinking prison!"

"I don't have a passport."

"Marilyn will take care of that. Since she forged Jennifer Hart's handwriting on those envelopes and letters she can handle getting you a passport in a matter of hours! She has a friend who is an expert in forging passports, and he has more brains than that head of yours! I do not know what I was thinking of when I asked you to help Marilyn and me set up Jennifer Hart for murder!"

"It was an honest mistake!" the man exclaims shaking with fear.

"I do not want to hear one more word out of that mouth of yours! Your excuses does not save me from facing life in prison! I honestly wish I had never had the misfortune of meeting such a clown as yourself! Now get out of here, and go back to the hotel! Can you do that one simple thing without making another blunder?!!" Frank asks looking at his accomplice with rage in his eyes his voice now yelling.

"Yes. I'll be on my way now. I'll start packing immediately," his accomplice replies as he makes toward the door with Frank staring at him with boiling rage. He rushes toward the door. Just as he is about to open it, he hears Frank's voice.

"You really are such a moron!"

He turns to see Frank holding a gun in his hand which is aimed at him much to his and Marilyn's horror.

"Frank, don't! Let him go! You're making a big mistake!" Marilyn begs as tears stream down her face. "Put the gun down! You don't have to do this! One killing was enough!"

Just as Frank is about to pull the trigger, Marilyn grabs his arm. She is about to reach for the gun when he throws her onto the floor with a powerful grip.

"I'm not leaving any loose ends around so you're going to have to join Rodriguez in hell! Get ready to say your prayers!" Frank exclaims with a mischievous grin as Marilyn watches in horror terrified at what she is about to witness. She covers up her ears as Frank pulls the trigger, and the gun goes off! She bursts into hysterical tears as she looks over where the dead accomplice's body is now lying on the other side of the room.

Hart House Night

That night Jonathan and Jennifer are sound asleep together in their bedroom as they are lying next to each other while holding each other's hand. The telephone rings. After a few more moments of it ringing persistently the door in the kitchen that leads to a corridor opens. Max walks in wearing his pajamas and robe. He is yawning as he makes his way to the telephone on the wall.

"All right, all right. I'm comin'. Give me a break. Geez!" Max exclaims annoyed at being woken up late at night. "What are you yawnin' for? You're not the one who has to get up to answer the ringin' telephone at this hour," Max says to Freeway who is also yawning from where he is curled up in his dog bed. "Hart Residence," Max replies answering the telephone half asleep.

"I wish to speak to Jonathan Hart," Frank replies on the other end of the line.

"He is sleepin' in bed which is exactly where you should be," Max says with a bit of annoyance at the caller's lack of manners. "Call durin’ the day like normal people."

"Tell him to come to the telephone right now if he ever expects to clear his wife of murder," Frank orders calmly. "Tell the great Jonathan Hart Frank Harrison is calling. He'll remember me very well."

"Oh, hold on a moment," Max says taken by surprise. He leaves the receiver hanging down from the hook. He switches on a light and heads out a door leading to the stairs out in the foyer.

Soon after the door to the Harts' bedroom opens, and Max walks into the room.

"Mr. and Mrs. H," Max says walking over to them.  He gently shakes Jonathan's shoulder. Slowly Jonathan and Jennifer wake up. "Sorry to disturb you, Mr. and Mrs. H, but that Harrison jerk is on the telephone. He wants to speak to you now. He said to come to the phone right away if you ever expect to clear Mrs. H," Max tells them with worry.  Jonathan glances over at Jennifer before turning on a lamp on a table by his side of the bed. He picks up the telephone receiver.

"This is Jonathan Hart. What do you want, Harrison? I think you have made a mess of our lives already without complicating them any further," Jonathan replies annoyed. "Don't you think you've had enough revenge?"

"You're a fine one to talk about complicating people's lives. You fired me and had me put behind bars, but I didn't call you up at two o' clock in the morning to discuss the past. I know you caught on to me having you followed and know who was behind having your precious wife framed for murder, but then there is still no way you can get to me."

"Harrison, Lieutenant Grey of the Los Angeles Police Department has an APB out on that friend of yours so I wouldn't get so sure of myself. He is going to get back to me tomorrow what he finds out from the state prison about those other companions of yours. What do you want?"

"I want to arrange a meeting with you and your wife. I think it is time we are properly introduced," Frank replies. "Come down to Santa Barbara day after tomorrow and don't bring anyone else along. If you want your wife off the hook, you'll play by my rules. If not you can kiss your future with Mrs. Hart goodbye forever."

"If you think I am going to jeopardize Jennifer's life then you better think again. I rather risk my life than bring her along.  What are you up to? You wouldn't risk going back to prison unless you had a reason for setting up this meeting. I'll come alone if that what it takes to get you to clear Jennifer's name," Jonathan replies adamantly.

Max and Jennifer look at each other in shock and alarm.

"If you come alone, I will not show up. Oh, I think you should know that your chances of finding that other ex-con I had working along with me is impossible now. I had him leave America this afternoon on a private jet run by this friend of mine. You'll never track down the jet or the pilot. He went to some country where they never even heard of the name Jonathan Hart, and the local authorities there don't cooperate with strangers. Not even all your millions could help you find him there. I'm your last hope. Take it or leave it!"

"Hold on a moment," Jonathan says as he places his hand on the receiver. He sighs in defeat. He doesn't know what to do. He feels cornered. He turns and looks at Jennifer who is looking at him with fear in her eyes.

"Jonathan, it is too dangerous!" Jennifer insists.

"I'll take it, Harrison," Jonathan replies taking his hand off of the receiver. "Where do you want us to meet you?"

Jennifer shoots Max a look of disappointment. He nods his head agreeing with Jennifer upon Jonathan agreeing to go along with Harrison's scheme.

"It is not going to be that easy. First you have to make some travel arrangements before you meet me. I want you to fly down from LAX. I have a friend who works at the airport. He'll let me know who is on the passenger list and who isn't. Before our meeting Mrs. Hart and yourself are to treat yourselves to a sightseeing tour here in Santa Barbara. You really should see the sights. Santa Barbara is very beautiful. Here is a list of places you're to visit," Frank Harrison begins.

"Jennifer and I had been to Santa Barbara before. We don't plan to spend anymore time there than necessary," Jonathan tells him impatiently. "We'll meet you wherever you want, but I am not playing any games with you. Only reason I am going along with this twisted scheme is to clear Jennifer's name. I have no intention of taking us on a tour of Santa Barbara. I am not thrilled with the idea of going along with your demands, but if that is what it takes to prove Jennifer's innocence I'll do it. Besides that I don't trust you, Harrison, with good reason. You better not be playing cat and mouse with us," Jonathan continues as he takes the receiver off of his ear and holds it so Max and Jennifer can hear every word Frank Harrison is saying on the other end.

"If you want to prove Jennifer's innocence, you'll do exactly what I say, Hart!" Frank shouts. "I am not in any mood to make any negotiations with you! Only I call all the shots! You're going to have to forget being a businessman who is used to playing by his rules and do what someone else demands for once! Do you understand?! Don't try my patience! I think I am being generous considering all the hell I want through in prison thanks to you!" Frank shouts with fury.

"Where do you want us to go?" Jonathan asks his patience wearing thin, but managing to stay calm.

"That is exactly the right attitude. Now, you're to start at The Mission. Next stop is The Santa Barbara Courthouse. Being a man, who has a high regard for the law, I'm sure you'll enjoy seeing that building in person along with your classy lady of a wife. After the courthouse you're to go directly to Paseo Nuevo State And Street Shopping. You'll find cafes and restaurants there where you can eat. Your next and final stop is The Santa Barbara Harbor. I'll be watching your every move so don't attempt to go to the local authorities or go anywhere else. You're only to go to the sights I gave you the names of. If you dare to deceive me before our meeting, you'll regret it! I want you and Mrs. Hart to feel the tension and anxiety knowing I'll be watching your every step. You're to meet me at Anacapa Island Lighthouse at 6:00 PM. It is located at The Channel Island. I want you to arrive by helicopter. You can charter a chopper at Camarillo Airport. The flight is only twenty five minutes. You're to stand with Mrs. Hart facing the lighthouse. I'll show up in thirty minutes just to be sure you followed my instructions thoroughly. If you decide to let the police or anyone else in on our meeting you and your wife will die. I'll have your bodies thrown into the ocean. I don't think you and Mrs. Hart would like to be buried at sea. Remember you and your wife are to come alone. Oh, and don't bring any weapons. I plan to give you both a body search. I'll be arriving by helicopter so I can see if you obeyed my instructions. If I see any unexpected visitors I'll fly away. If I were you, I'd get plenty of rest the night before. You're going to need it. I'll call you that night to let you know what time to arrive in Santa Barbara," Harrison replies in a tone revealing he is enjoying what he is going to put the Harts through. He hangs up.

Jonathan hangs up the receiver.

"Jonathan, why did you agree to go along with that man's demands? I think he is planning to kill us. Call Lieutenant Grey in the morning and tell him all about the telephone call. He can help us. You'll need to let the police in on this. Perry needs to know too. He made it very clear to you he wants to know everything we're doing," Jennifer replies with terror in her voice. "I love you for wanting to clear my name, but if it means getting us killed it isn't worth it, darling," Jennifer says gently as she places a hand on Jonathan's shoulder.

"She's right, Mr. H. I think I should come along too. I'll hide someplace where that creep will never spot me," Max tells him.

"No, Max, Jennifer and I have to go alone. I know you and Jennifer think my judgment has been clouded, but you need to trust me on this. I am not going to risk our lives at any cost," Jonathan replies calmly. He turns to face Jennifer and picks up her hand which he kisses. "Trust me, darling. I won't let anything happen to us. I'll fight to save our lives if it comes to that. You're more important to me than anything in the world that I would never put your life at risk. Jennifer, please."

"I trust you, darling. I am just afraid of what Harrison is going to do once we show up in Santa Barbara."

"If it is any comfort to you I am just as frightened as you are, darling," Jonathan replies holding onto her hand tightly. "Max, we'll becoming back alive."

"In that case all I can say is good luck. Do you need anythin', Mr. and Mrs. H, before I hit the sack again?"

"Darling?" Jonathan asks.

"Just a hold good thought for us, Max, and keep us in your prayers," Jennifer replies.

"You got it," Max replies with a nod.

He heads toward the door and walks out leaving Jonathan and Jennifer alone. He shuts the door. Jonathan turns to Jennifer who is standing by the window quiet. Jonathan rises from the bed and walks over to her. He comes behind her and embraces her.

“It is going to be all right,” Jonathan says gently as Jennifer places her head on his chest. He wraps his arms around her.

A House in Santa Barbara

Frank stands looking at the telephone on the desk in the living room with a devious grin.

"Frank-" comes Marilyn's nervous voice.

"Marilyn, what are you doing up?" Frank asks taken off guard as he turns around to face her.

Marilyn's hair is a mess, and there are circles under her eyes. She is wearing pajamas and a dressing gown.

"I couldn't sleep. I got up to take some aspirin. I have a headache. Frank, please don't do this! You already made a mistake today. We can't afford to risk our lives by going through with this ridiculous scheme of playing games with the Harts! I won't let you do it! I want out!" Marilyn shouts. "And I am not taking no for an answer! I do not even know why you're taking this chance of exposing us both to the police! Jonathan Hart is too smart and intelligent to show up alone with just his wife! You have completely lost your mind!"

"That's where you are wrong because Jonathan and Jennifer Hart are not going to make it out of Anacapa Island alive! They'll be buried at sea where they belong! You really have been mistrusting me since Jennifer Hart was bailed out of prison. I am sick to death of all of your whining and complaining!" Frank shouts his voice filled with boiling rage again. "After today I am not taking a gamble with my future! I'm going to kill the Harts before the police can link me to Rodriguez's murder! Now that Jonathan Hart knows I am responsible for framing his wife there is no way Hart is not going to be able to track me down and have me arrested! Sooner or later he'll find me!"

Marilyn's eyes turn wide with fear. She rushes toward the door, but Frank grabs her by the arm with a tight grip.

"Going somewhere, my dear? You better think again!" Frank exclaims with a mischievous grin.

"FRANK, PLEASE! YOU'RE HURTING ME! LET ME GO!" Marilyn shouts with terror fearing for her life.

"Oh, you're going all right," Frank replies calmly as he pulls out the gun from the outside pocket of his suit. "Not just the way you hoped. You know, I never did plan to keep you around. I planned to kill you at some point, but I had never thought it would be this soon. You are just another loose end that I would have to take care of. That is such a shame! You really are such a talented woman, but you also get too scared too easily! That is something I can't  stand or afford! Goodbye forever, Marilyn! Thank you for being my partner in my plan to frame Jennifer Hart! I never could have gone through it without you! Time to say your prayers, my darling!" Frank says as he pulls the trigger while Marilyn bursts into a blood-curdling scream. The gun goes off. "Three down. Only two more to go," Frank says with a smile of pure delight as he looks down at Marilyn's dead body in front of him. "And then my plan of revenge will be complete," he says as he throws the gun onto the floor.

 Hart House Two Days Later

That morning Jonathan wakes up and turns to see Jennifer is not in bed. He glances at the clock on the table by his side of the bed. It reads 7:00. Concerned Jonathan throws the covers off of him. He puts on the slippers on the floor and walks over to the door. He opens it and walks out shutting the door behind him.

Meanwhile Jennifer is standing in the kitchen downstairs pouring herself a cup of coffee that she just made in the coffee pot. She puts some sugar into her coffee before pouring milk. She is still wearing her pajamas and matching robe.  She sighs as she sips her coffee. The door leading to the stairs in the foyer opens, and Jonathan walks in.

"Darling, are you all right?" Jonathan asks as he approaches her with his hands in the pockets of his robe.

"I am all right," Jennifer says solemnly without turning to face him. "I just couldn't sleep," she says. "Do you want some coffee?"

"Yes, but not right now," Jonathan replies still troubled about his wife's mood.

"Let's go onto the patio, darling. I could use some fresh air," Jennifer says taking her cup with her as she heads toward a backdoor leading to the patio.

"I think we both could use some fresh air," Jonathan replies following her onto the patio.  She walks over to the table and takes a seat. She places the cup down on the table and sips her coffee quietly. Jonathan walks over and takes a seat across from her. He looks over at her wondering what she is thinking.  It reminds him of one evening that they had spent together on the patio five years ago when he was suffering from temporary amnesia after he hit his head. The accident happened a few minutes after witnessing a murder. Tears come into Jennifer's eyes as she continues sipping her coffee.

"Do you know what this reminds me of?" Jonathan asks.

"No, what does it remind you of?" Jennifer asks placing her cup down as she looks up at him.

"It reminds me of the evening we spent on the patio when I had amnesia. I couldn't even remember who you were or that you were my wife," Jonathan replies. "You were trying so hard to remain strong, but I could sense it in your eyes you were sad. It was just like the moment we're sharing together now. Only the circumstances have changed, and I have my memory back," Jonathan replies solemnly. "Jennifer, we didn't talk about the telephone call from Harrison the other night. You never even said a word. Are you angry at me?" he asks looking up at her hoping deep in his heart her response would be no. "Or are you just disappointed in me?"

Jennifer manages a slight smile. "I'm not angry or disappointed at you, darling. I'm just scared."

The telephone rings.

Jonathan and Jennifer each exchange a look.

"If that is Harrison, do you want me to tell him the meeting is off?"

Jennifer smiles as she shakes her head. "No, you do what you feel is best," she replies softly.

Jonathan manages a slight smile and hurries back into the kitchen. The telephone continues to ring. Jonathan picks up the receiver.

"Hello, this is Jonathan Hart. Oh, good morning, Miss Waring. Is anything wrong at the office? I see. Could you call me back in half an hour? There is something I need to attend to. No, you're fine. There is just something important I have to take care of first," Jonathan replies as he stares out of the window watching Jennifer continue sipping her coffee. "Thanks." He hangs up the receiver and walks back onto the patio.

"That was just Miss Waring. She's going to call back in half an hour," Jonathan tells his wife as he retakes his seat.

"Is there a problem at the office?" Jennifer asks as she takes a break from sipping her coffee.

"No, there is just something I need to look into regarding this new business venture for Hart Industries," Jonathan replies. He looks over at her still worried about her mood. "Jennifer," he says calmly and gently.  She turns to him.

"Talk to me. Tell me what you're thinking. Open up to me," Jonathan says. He reaches over and takes her hand. "You've never been this quiet."

"I have never thought I could be this scared," Jennifer replies.

"You know even when I was in the orphanage there were times I was scared. I was afraid I would never be successful or could accomplish anything. That all changed when I met Max.  He is the second best thing that happened to me. You are the first. Jennifer, what I'm saying is we all get scared through difficult phases of our lives. It is a normal human reaction. You never been afraid to show your feelings before. Why are you suddenly keeping your feelings all bottled up?"

"I don't know, darling. I guess I just feel like this really isn't happening. If I just don't talk about it it may not come true what we have to face today," Jennifer replies as she places her cup down.

"You and I have both had our lives in danger many times."

"We were never had our lives threatened where we were helpless," Jennifer says.  "We're going to be on an island with no one around and nowhere to escape. Other than Max no one is going to know we're out on Anacapa Island. We won't even have any way to defend ourselves."

Jennifer bursts into tears. She looks over at Jonathan with the tears flowing down from her face. They rise from their seat at the same time as Jonathan walks over to her. They embrace as Jonathan places his arms around her.

“We’ll have each other, darling,” Jonathan says. "I wish there was something I could do for you."

Jennifer pulls out of the embrace. "There is," Jennifer replies managing a smile as Jonathan lovingly touches her face."Only one thing I want you to do for me. Just remember that no matter what happens, I won't regret what we did."

"I'll remember," Jonathan replies with a smile as he takes her in his arms and holds her.

"Let's go for a walk," Jennifer says after pulling out of the embrace in a few moments. "I didn't get much sleep last night."

They walk toward the garden holding onto each other hand's as they walk quietly.

"Did I ever tell you you're a brave woman?" Jonathan asks as they reach the garden.

"I don't remember, but I do recall you telling me you were very proud of me," Jennifer replies with a smile remembering those words as they stop walking and turn to face each other.

"Well, I am telling you now you are a very brave woman, and I am still very proud of you. Not many women would be holding up as good as you are."

"Those women do not have a husband like I do," Jennifer tells him wrapping her arm around him as they continue their walk.

"You know I feel there is something we should do before we go to the airport."

"What is that?"

"Go to the convent and ask Janet to pray with us.  I think we'll both feel less nervous once we ask God to look after us."

"I agree.  I think asking for God's blessing in his house would prepare us for what we have to do. She was more than kind to allow us to stay there for my protection before I testified against Nick Rhodes."

"I could do with the cup of coffee right now," Jonathan says.

"All right. I'll fix it for you myself," Jennifer replies as they turn around and head back to the house. "Let's take a walk before we pack. The exercise will do us a world of good."

They continue heading back to their house holding onto each other's hand.

"You go on ahead, darling. There is something I forgot to do I need to take care of," Jonathan tells her when they reach the patio.

They let go of each other's hand as Jennifer walks into the kitchen. Jonathan waits until she is out of sight. He hurries over to a garage. Once reaching the garages where each of their cars are kept Jonathan opens one.  He turns on a light switch. He opens the door to the Mercedes and takes out the mobile car phone. He dials a number and waits a few seconds before his call is answered.

"Hello, this is Jonathan. I apologize to call you so early, but I just wanted to check with you."

A few minutes later Jonathan walks back into the kitchen through the living room door. The room is empty. Jonathan walks out onto the patio to find Jennifer sitting at the table. His cup of coffee is on the other side of the table. Jennifer is drinking a fresh hot of coffee she made for herself as she stares out at the gardens and pool area behind their house.

"Sorry, darling. It was something that couldn't wait,"

"Oh, no need to apologize. I understand. Did you get everything taken care of?" Jennifer asks. Jonathan sits down.

"I certainly did," Jonathan replies in a confident manner as he picks up his fresh cup of coffee.

"It is a beautiful day at least," Jennifer says admiring the beautiful clear sky.

Jonathan manages a smile as he takes a sip of coffee.

Anacapa Island

The helicopter Jonathan and Jennifer are riding in is approaching Anacapa Island.

"Is this your first time to the island, Mr. Hart?" the pilot asks.

"Yes it is," Jonathan replies over the loud noise of the aircraft.

"Anacapa Island is looked after by The National Park Service I believe?" Jennifer asks.

"Yes, Mrs. Hart.  This island is certainly a strange place for and your husband to fly into in the evening."

"Why do you say that?" Jonathan asks turning to face the pilot.

"It is a small island. Only interesting thing to see there is the lighthouse. Anacapa is the smallest Channel Island that is near the mainland. I would think you would have wanted to visit during the normal visiting hours."

"Well, uh, Jonathan and I like to explore on our own," Jennifer replies with a smile thinking of some explanation without revealing their real purpose for coming to Anacapa.

"You picked the right time for it," the pilot says as the craft begins to descend to the ground.  Jonathan and Jennifer take off their headphones. Jonathan reaches into the pocket of his pants and takes out his wallet. He hands some cash to the pilot. "Here you go."

"Thank you, Mr. Hart. Enjoy the island!" the pilot replies with a friendly smile as Jonathan and Jennifer get out of the helicopter. They close the doors and walk away from the craft. Once Jonathan and Jennifer are out of the way, the pilot begins to take off from the land and fly away. Jonathan and Jennifer watch him fly out of sight.

"At least Harrison was nice enough to let us take the helicopter. If he had insisted we take a boat we would have had to walk up 157 stairs to get to the top of the island," Jennifer says turning to face Jonathan.

"I never thought I would say this, darling, but I am thankful he made us take the helicopter. I am not in any shape to walk up 157 stairs," Jonathan replies as he takes her hand.

"How did I know you were going to say that, darling?" Jennifer asks with a smile. Jonathan manages a grin as they start to walk up to the lighthouse together hand in hand. They can hear the foghorn coming from the lighthouse.  As they walk toward the lighthouse Jennifer looks over their surroundings.  Seagulls are walking over the land. The wind is anything but calm and peaceful. As Jonathan and Jennifer get closer, a pair of binoculars is focusing in on them from the top of the lighthouse from inside. It is Frank Harrison. An evil grin comes over his face as he continues watching the Harts from the binoculars. The foghorn can be heard again. Jonathan and Jennifer reach the lighthouse. They stand in front of the old building just as Harrison instructed them. Jonathan glances at his wristwatch. While waiting for Frank Harrison to make his appearance Jonathan and Jennifer look over the island from where they're standing. They place an arm around each other and wait calmly. They remain silent for  thirty minutes. As the time comes for the Harts to meet their enemy,  Jonathan and Jennifer hear footsteps. They turn to see Frank Harrison walking towards them from the other side of the lighthouse. Just as he walks up to them the foghorn once again makes its presence known.

"What happened to your grand entrance?" Jennifer asks as she and Jonathan exchange looks.

"I never intended to make one, Mrs. Hart. I arrived here shortly before you did. I've been watching you from the top of the lighthouse," Frank replies with a grin. "Jonathan, in a way I'm delighted to see you again."

"I wish I could say the same, Harrison," Jonathan remarks.

"I didn't expect you to feel the same way."

"After what you put us through how did you expect him to feel?" Jennifer asks with annoyance in her voice.

"Well, your wife certainly has spunk," Frank replies taken by surprise.

"Yes, she does. Don't press your luck. Jennifer can get very angry when she wants to," Jonathan tells him as he places his hands on his hips.

"I can tell. I do admire a woman who is not afraid to speak her mind."

"Trust me if I wasn't a lady I wouldn't hesitate to really give you a piece of my mind," Jennifer says with a frown.

"I'm glad to know you're a lady. However, I wouldn't expect Jonathan Hart to be married to a woman who wasn't. If Jonathan Hart had one thing I always admired about him was his class and love for life."

"Can we skip the formalities? And get this over with?" Jonathan asks.

"Yes, I'm with Jonathan. I am not in the mood for polite conversation," Jennifer says growing impatient.

"Talk about testy. I guess the sea air doesn't agree with you," Frank says.

"The sea air agrees with us just fine. It is the company that doesn't," Jonathan tells him.

"I'm going to ignore that comment because the feeling is mutual," Frank replies. "Mrs. Hart, open up your purse!"

Jennifer reluctantly takes her purse off of her arm and opens it. Frank takes her purse and looks through it carefully for any kind of weapon. He shuts it and hands it back to Jennifer. "Jonathan, put your hands up and don't move."

Jonathan put his hands up high in the air while standing motionless. Frank comes over and looks through his pockets for any kind of weapon. After searching his pockets he is satisfied.

"All right. You can put your hands down now."

Jonathan sighs in relief and puts his hands down.

"I'm glad to see you followed my instructions exactly the way I gave them," Frank replies impressed.

"Never mind that. Before we discuss Jennifer's future I want to know why you telephoned us. You are too smart to risk getting caught. We could have called the police to ask them to trace the call," Jonathan says.

"Like you said I am too smart to risk getting caught, but you, Jonathan, are also too smart to risk your wife being sent to prison for a long time. I figured you were desperate so you wouldn't dare ask the cops to trace the call. I spent the past night away incase I misjudged you."

"Now that you answered that question what was your real reason you called this meeting?"

"Revenge," Frank replies with a smile as he pulls out a gun from his suit. "Revenge is the name of the game."

"You lied to us!" Jennifer exclaims in fear.

"Exactly! Why would I go to all the trouble of making those travel arrangements when I could risk getting caught? To wait for the climax scene where everything reaches its peak."

"I think you have been watching too many Alfred Hitchcock movies at night," Jennifer replies. "You're planning to kill us. You're a sick man!"

"He's not only sick, darling. He is an idiot," Jonathan says turning to face her.

"I'm the idiot?!" Frank asks before bursting into hysterical laughter. "You and your wife agreed to meet me on an island where there is nowhere to escape or get help. I wouldn't exactly say you and Mrs. Hart are Albert Einstein."

"This is crazy, Harrison! Even if you kill Jennifer and me you're still going to get caught somehow someday. You thought you could get away with embezzlement, but you ended up getting caught."

"Crime doesn't pay no matter what you think," Jennifer says in a serious tone. "You already killed once."

"Why don't you make it easier on yourself and let us live? By killing us both you're making it harder on yourself in the long run."

"Actually to be honest I've killed three people so I don't see how killing two more can make any difference."

Jonathan and Jennifer each exchange a look of shock and terror.

"Harrison, if you're going to kill anyone kill me," Jonathan says adamantly standing in front of Jennifer as he gently pushes her behind him. "You hate me not my wife so don't punish her for something you think I am responsible for."

"Hart, you listen to me!" Frank exclaims as he points the gun at the side of the lighthouse. He pulls the trigger. A bullet lands in the side of the building. "I spent years in prison thanks to you handing me over to the police! I thought I was going to lose my mind if I spent one more minute in that stinking cell!"

"You should have thought of that before stealing. You were a bright member of the board. You've could have had a long promising position at Hart Industries if you hadn't resorted to crime."

"Try to talk your way of what you did to me all you want, but it is not going to do you any good! You stole years of my life that I can never get back! My life and reputation was ruined! When I got out I had to start fresh! You have everything so you have no idea what it is like to lose something so I had to show you what it was like to lose someone precious to you! After today you'll never have a chance to lose your wife again because you're going to die together! Get out of the way! I want you and Jennifer standing beside each other holding hands when I pull the trigger!" Frank orders as he aims the gun at them. “Do what I say!”

“No! I won’t let her die too! You kill me! If you don’t you’ll have to fight me to kill my wife!” Jonathan insists with anger in his voice as he stares at Harrison with contempt.

“Jonathan, I won’t let you,” Jennifer replies. “We die together!” Jennifer insists.

“Now, isn’t that precious? Your wife is willing to die with you,” Frank replies with a smug. “Get together and hold hands.”

Jonathan and Jennifer exchange looks of fear as Jonathan hesitates.

“Hart, I told you to get together and hold hands!” Frank snaps losing patience.

"If I were you I would be more concerned about that helicopter that is coming near us," Jennifer says with her hand held over her eyes.

"That trick isn't going to work, Mrs. Hart, but I give you credit for trying," Frank replies with a sly grin.

"It isn't a trick," Jonathan says pointing behind them. "I can see it too. Look!"

Frank turns around to tell if the Harts are telling him the truth or if it's a trick. Jonathan jumps on him. They struggle as Jonathan fights to get the gun.  Frank holds a tight grip on the gun as he holds it up. Jonathan tries to get the gun out of his hand, but Frank's grip is too strong. Jennifer watches in terror afraid for her husband's life. Just as Jonathan increases his grip, Frank fights back by punching Jonathan hard in the face with his free hand. Despite his cheek stinging from the punch Jonathan still tries to overpower Harrison. They wrestle each trying to defeat each other. Frank still manages to hold a tight grip on the gun as they continue their fight. Jonathan uses his strength like never before to try to get the deadly weapon and put an end to the attack. Just as Frank reaches to grab Jonathan firmly by the chin a voice can be heard behind them from up above in the sky.

"Frank Harrison, drop your gun and surrender!" comes an older police officer's voice from a helicopter that is directly above the island in clear sight. He is speaking through a bullhorn. "I have a gun, and I won't hesitate to use it if I have to! Put the gun down now! We're getting ready to land so make up your mind this instant!" he orders as he signals to the pilot to land the craft. Perry Mason and another police officer are sitting in the back of the helicopter.

Frank releases his grip on Jonathan setting him free. Jennifer rushes over to Jonathan and helps her husband up as he lifts himself up to his feet. In a panic Frank hurries toward the cliff. Jonathan rushes after him. Once reaching the cliff Frank looks down below to see that there is no way out. Jonathan approaches him standing across from him where it is safe.

"Give it up, Harrison. There is no way out except down. I don't think you're desperate enough to jump. You'd be killing yourself for nothing," Jonathan tells him. "Hand me the gun, and I promise you I won't let you be hurt."

Frank turns around and faces Jonathan. He looks at the gun held in his hand and sighs. He once again looks down at the cold ocean down below behind him. He turns back to Jonathan. He holds out the gun. Jonathan starts to walk toward him when Frank picks up the gun and aims it at him. He stops cold in his tracks.

"You come near me, you're going to die, and your wife will be alone!"

"You'd never get away with it. The police are about to land now. You're going back to prison for life no matter what decision you make so hand over the gun."

"Since you're so confident I won't get away I'll just kill your wife then!" Frank exclaims with a devious smile as he rushes past Jonathan.  Jonathan runs after him fast on his feet determined to stop him before he lays a hand on his wife. Jennifer is watching as the pilot is about to land the helicopter on the other side of the island. Frank is rushing toward her with Jonathan not far behind.

"Darling, watch out!" Jonathan yells in alarm as Frank comes up to Jennifer and holds a tight grip around her neck before she has time to react.

"Come on. We're going to take a trip to the water below," Frank whispers in a menacing tone.  Just as he is about to carry Jennifer over to the cliff Jonathan quietly comes up behind him and snatches the gun from his hand.

"Only person taking a trip to the water below would be you," Jonathan replies taking Frank by surprise. “Take your hand off of my wife!” he orders firmly.

Frank releases his grip on Jennifer and heads off toward the cliff with Jonathan once again hurrying after him. The helicopter lands. Perry and the officers hurry out of the aircraft. They rush toward the lighthouse hurrying to come to the rescue. By now Jonathan and Frank are reaching the edge of the cliff with Frank ahead. Just as Frank attempts to jump, Jonathan grabs him by the hand. Frank turns around and punches Jonathan hard in the face knocking him off of his feet. The gun falls to the ground. Jennifer is running towards them with the police behind. Perry stands by the lighthouse where it is safe calmly watching the struggle. Just as Jonathan is about to lift himself up Frank grabs the gun.

"Get up!" Frank orders aiming the gun at Jonathan.

Jonathan rises to his feet. "Go ahead and shoot me while my wife is watching," Jonathan says. "Go ahead and pull the trigger with the police coming towards us."

Just as Frank is about to pull the trigger Jennifer screams.

"Jonathan!" she yells in a panic with tears coming into her eyes as she and the officers reach the cliff. The officers take out their guns which they aim at Frank.

"Drop the gun now! It is over, Harrison! Give it up!" the officer, who ordered Frank to surrender in the helicopter only minutes ago, exclaims.

Just as Frank aims the gun toward Jennifer and the policemen Jonathan jumps on him. The fall results in Frank losing control of the weapon. Fortunately the gun is pointed up above when it goes off. Jonathan manages to get the gun out of Frank's hand before he can make another move. He aims it at his enemy.

"You try that once more you're going to wish I had let you jump!" Jonathan exclaims giving him a harsh look.

He continues to aim the gun at Frank who is boiling with rage and anger at being defeated. Jennifer sighs in relief as she and the officers walk up to Jonathan.

"Good work, Mr. Hart," the other officer tells him with a smile impressed.

"Thanks," Jonathan tells him as he hands the officer the weapon.

"Darling, are you all right?" Jennifer asks as she and Jonathan embrace each other thankful they're both are well and alive.

"I am now that is all over, darling," Jonathan tells her with a warm smile giving her a kiss. "Hold on a second," Jonathan says as the officers help Frank up. One of them handcuff him. Jonathan walks up to Frank and stares at him with a harsh look for a few seconds. Finally Jonathan smacks him so hard across the face it almost causes him to lose his balance. "That one is for messing with my wife!" Jonathan exclaims with a proud smile. The officers grin as they lead an angry and annoyed Frank away who is staring after Jonathan. Jennifer smiles and kisses Jonathan on the lips. They walk up to Perry hand in hand.

"Nice job you did handling Frank Harrison," Perry says with a smile. "Would you and Jennifer consider being private investigators for me if I ever decide to step back down from the bench permanently?" he asks in a joking manner.

"Are you kidding? We're detectives who just happen to be married and wealthy," Jennifer replies with a smile. She and Jonathan exchange laughs as Jonathan wraps an arm around her.

"I can see that," Perry replies as all three of them bursts out laughing out loud.

Hart House That Night

"Darling, you certainly picked an unique place for a romantic evening," Jennifer Hart says to her husband. They are sitting up front in the parked Corniche in the garage as Jonathan pours Champagne into their glasses which they are holding. An ice bucket is sitting on the floor of the backseat near their reach. Their windows are rolled down.

"I wanted us to celebrate some place private with just the two of us, darling," Jonathan explains as he finishes filling up Jennifer's glass.

"What if Max goes looking for us?" Jennifer asks as Jonathan reaches into the back and places the bottle carefully into the ice bucket.

"I told him we were going for a drive," Jonathan replies with a mischievous grin.

"Why couldn't we have just checked into a hotel like a normal couple?"

"I didn't want to run the risk of us being disturbed. Besides this is much more romantic with just the two of us sitting here in the car drinking Champagne where it is peaceful and quiet."

"Here's to peace and quiet, darling," Jennifer replies with a grin and twinkle in her eye as they raise their glass before clicking them together in a toast. They sip their Champagne as they look at each other with sincere love in their eyes.

"You know despite all the adventures and characters that cross our paths you and I are truly blessed. We have each other," Jonathan says thoughtfully.

"At the end of the day that is all that truly matters, darling," Jennifer replies as she leans over and kisses him.

"I love you, darling," Jonathan says as he places an arm around her shoulder.

"And I love you," Jennifer replies seductively as she places her arm around his shoulder.

Jonathan picks up his wife's glass and places it on the other side on the floor of the backseat. He then places his own glass down careful not to spill any of the Champagne. They smile as Jonathan takes Jennifer in his arms. As they are about to kiss Max comes up to the driver's side of the door where Jonathan is sitting. Freeway is beside him.

"Oh, there you are," Max says in surprise upon finding Jonathan and Jennifer embracing each other in the vehicle in the garage. "I'm glad you decided not to go out for a drive after all. Mr. H, I need to talk to you."

"Why, Max?" Jonathan asks turning around to face him. "Is there another body in the house?"

"If there is a body you know Lieutenant Grey's number," Jennifer says with a grin.

"Nah, there ain't another body," Max replies shaking his head. "I need to just talk to Mr. H for a moment."

"Max, is it an emergency? Has someone died?" Jonathan asks.

"No, it ain't an emergency."

Jonathan rolls up their windows.

"But, Mr. H, it won't take, but a few minutes. I need some advice," Max insists thinking they were not listening to what he said. As he reaches for the doorknob Jonathan locks the car from inside. Jonathan and Jennifer embrace once again with their back turned towards him. Max touches the doorknob.

"Oh, I guess they want to be alone," Max says after finding the door locked. "Come on, Freeway," Max tells the dog as he starts to head out of the garage and back into the main house. Freeway follows him. Jonathan and Jennifer bursts out laughing at Max intruding once again.

"Darling, do you think Max will ever get the hint?" Jennifer asks with a smile.

"If he does then we're really going to have to celebrate," Jonathan replies seductively. Jennifer bursts out laughing as Jonathan reaches behind her ear and gives her a kiss. He then reaches over to her mouth and gives her a long passionate kiss as they both close their eyes. As Jonathan turns his arm around he accidentally touches the switch to turn on the radio. Nat King Cole's "Our Love Is Here To Stay" begins playing.

"It's very clear, our love is here to stay," Nat King Cole sings as the romantic song starts.

Jonathan and Jennifer pull out of the embrace startled by the song. They look at each other with a grin.

"Our love certainly is," Jennifer replies with a smile before she and Jonathan continue kissing passionately while the song continues to play.

"Not for a year, but ever and a day

The radio and the telephone and the movies that we know

May just be passing fancies and in time may go

But oh, my dear, our love is here to stay

Together we're going a long, long way

In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble

They're only made of clay, but our love is here to stay."

As the song reaches the instrumental part Jonathan and Jennifer move closer as Jennifer leans against her door with Jonathan leaning over as they are still locked into a passionate and hot kiss. Jonathan begins kissing her entire neck before kissing behind her ears as Nat continues singing the rest of the song before it comes to an end.

"In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble

They're only made of clay, but our love is here to stay."

Jonathan and Jennifer continue kissing each other on the lips as Nat King Cole's voice fades out and the song comes to a close. Jonathan and Jennifer are both smiling by now.

This story was very good, I really enjoyed it. I really liked how it mentioned actual persons and previous episodes ( ex. Danny at cabin) and really liked having Perry Mason in it. Very entertaining and well written

Jonathan and Jennifer are such a charming, romantic, and funny couple. Even in the most dangerous situations, they always seem to find humor in the situations. Their banter is hilarious.

That Frank Harrison guy is a classic narcissistic! Has no morals, no values, no acknowledgement of wrong doing. If you ended up in jail for embezzling, you got nobody to blame but yourself. You blaming Jonathan Hart for something you did?!!! What did you expect Jonathan Hart to do? Not turn you into the police, let you get away with it. I actually felt sorry for his girlfriend Marilyn that he shot her like it was nothing; same with the accomplice. This dude killed three people like it was nothing. He’s not going to ever see the light of day.

Perry Mason being in this episode was really something. He definitely is the best lawyer at the end of the day. And he was an amazing lawyer to do what he did. Congrats to him for getting Jennifer off in the first place; by the way Harrison deserved to be slapped by Jonathan for what he put both of them for.

But I just love these episodes because there are just as good as the actual TV show. And I think Jennifer Hart is so beautiful at the end of the day. Harrison is right, Ms. Hart has spunk too. And she is brave, tough, and everything else Jonathan said she was. He’s a really good husband who treats Jennifer the way she is supposed to be treated. I also love the memories Jonathan had bout her too in the video. It shows what their relationship is all about; plus I thought it was very unselfish that Jonathan Hart was willing to actually die for his wife because that’s the ultimate sacrifice. When you are willing to do that, that means you really love somebody mentally, physically, and emotionally.

And one last thing, I thought that district attorney was a real arrogrant prick! I was like HOW DARE YOU insinuate that one Jennifer Hart killed someone she doesn’t know? How dare you say that a loving, and faithful wife was cheating on her husband and her lover was blackmailing her? That made me sick to my stomach. And that comment he made about her being in a hotel was really inappropriate.

There are three things I would like to bring to your attention...I read the whole script and towards the end when you make reference to Jennifer and you say woman, it should be women...Secondly, when you say the wind is anything but calm and peaceful, you don't need a comma after anything because the rest of the sentence will not stand alone...Thirdly , change confidant to confident...Sorry to be so critical but I have been a proof reader for many years and I can pick these things out...A beautiful story...
