Episode 9 Ghostly Harts

Based Upon The ABC Television Series Created By Sidney Sheldon

Written By Sara Duckworth

Hart House Day

One late afternoon Max is helping Jennifer rearrange some of the furniture in the living room. Freeway is watching them from one of the steps on the spiral staircase by the desk overlooking the room. Max and Jennifer are carrying one of the chairs by the piano over to the fireplace. They are almost reaching the fireplace when Jennifer stops and looks up at Max.

"Wait a minute, Max. Let's put the chair back."

"You just said you wanted the chair to be facin' the fireplace so you and Mr. H can relax by the fire without havin' to lie on the floor."

"You don't think it would be too crowded?" Jennifer asks pausing.

"Nah, we're goin' to be movin' 'em couches anyway so how can it be crowded?"

"Let's try it and see how the chair looks by the fireplace," Jennifer replies as they continue carrying the chair.

They bring it over to the fireplace and set it down. Max heaves a sigh as Jennifer sits down in the chair. She places her feet on the hearth.

"Cozy?" Max asks as he stands behind the chair.

"Cozy," Jennifer replies with a smile.

Max nods.

"What furniture are we movin' next?"

"On second thought we could get too warm sitting by the fire," Jennifer says after pondering the decision further.

"You could get one of 'em ottomans," Max replies as Jennifer rises from her seat.

"No, then it definitely would get too crowded."

"I don't understand. You want the room to have a more homey feel."

"The chair by the fire just does not seem to be appropriate."

"Huh? Mrs. H, it is a chair we're talkin' about. It ain't as if the piano is gonna be facin' the fireplace."

"I am talking about sophistication. When people walk into the room I want their breath to be taken away. I want the living room to be elegant."

"I have an easy solution for that. Buy all new furniture. The last time I checked Mr. H can afford new furniture."

"We do not need to go that far. How do you feel about making the living room sophisticated?"

"In my honest opinion I do not care one way or the other. This house ain't Buckingham Palace where we'll be chargin' folks for the grand tour."

"Have you ever thought of expanding your horizons?"

"Nah, I'm too set in my ways. I'll tell you this much. If it ain't broke don't fix it."

"Max?" Jennifer asks as she bends down.

"Yeah?"

"Help me move the chair back," Jennifer replies as she lifts up the front of the chair by the legs.

Max reluctantly bends down and picks up the chair by the legs from behind. He and Jennifer together carry the chair back towards the piano.

Once again Jennifer sits down. She looks around the room trying to get a feel of the room to see whether she wants the chair to stay where it is or be located somewhere else in the living room.

"How about now?" Max asks.

"No, let's move the chair again," Jennifer replies rising to her feet.

Freeway barks. Max and Jennifer look up at Freeway in surprise.

"You think we need to move the chair again, Freeway?" Jennifer asks turning around and looking up at the dog.

He barks once more.

"See? Even Freeway thinks the chair needs to be moved," Jennifer says as she turns around and faces Max.

"You and your big mouth!" Max exclaims looking up at the dog with annoyance.

"Now that isn't any way to talk to Freeway. I think he was just trying to contribute his opinion," Jennifer replies with a bit of disappointment.

"Yeah, but he ain't the one who has to rearrange the furniture," Max says as he and Jennifer once more lift up the chair. "Where do you want to place the chair now?" he asks as Jennifer looks around trying to decide where is the best place for the chair to be located. "Uh, Mrs. H, do you think you can make up your mind like before Christmas?" Max asks with a bit of annoyance in his voice finally after Jennifer still hasn't made a decision.

"On second thought let's wait until Jonathan helps us move the couch," Jennifer replies. "I can get a better idea on what the room would look like then."

"My daddy was right. Women can't makeup their mind," Max mumbles to himself quietly as he and Jennifer place the chair back down.

"What did you say?" Jennifer asks turning to him.

"Nothin'," Max replies. "Would you like for us to rearrange the pictures while we're at it?" Max asks sarcastically in a dead serious tone.

"Oh, I think you got something there, Max!" Jennifer replies with a wide smile impressed thinking Max was serious. "Let's start with-" she starts to say as they hear the door open.

Max and Jennifer turn to see Jonathan walk into the foyer. Freeway hurries down the steps and rushes over to Jonathan.

"Hey, Freeway!" Jonathan exclaims with a smile as Freeway approaches him. He bends down and pets the dog. "What are Uncle Max and your mother up to?"

"Hello, darling," Jennifer replies with a smile as she walks over to Jonathan.

"Hello," Jonathan says with a grin as he and Jennifer embrace.

"You are home early," Jennifer tells him as they pull out of the embrace. She kisses him on the lips.

"Saved by the bell!" Max exclaims with a sigh.

"I had some business to take care of on the way over to Bel Air so I decided to come home early," Jonathan explains as they walk into the living room together. "I have a surprise for you."

"A surprise? Darling, you got me a present just last week," Jennifer replies as she notices his crooked tie which she begins to tie correctly.

"It is not that kind of surprise. We are going to San Diego tomorrow. I have some business to take care of down there."

"That is the surprise?" Jennifer asks baffled.  "Taking me down to San Diego for a business trip?"

"No, the surprise is we're going to spend a few nights in the Hotel Del Coronado," Jonathan replies just as Jennifer finishes tying his tie. "I already had Kelly make the reservations for the finest and luxurious suite available. We drive down tomorrow morning around nine o' clock. We will have lunch together before I have to handle my business deal. It should be concluded in just a few hours. You and I will have the rest of the day and evening together," he finishes telling his wife.

"And the next few days and nights," Jennifer says seductively.

"On the beach," Jonathan replies seductively as he takes her in his arms.

"Swimming in the pool and watching the waves."

"Walking along the shore in the moonlight."

"And walking along the shore during the sunrise."

"Watching the sun set," Jonathan says before kissing Jennifer on the lips passionately.

"The Hotel Del Coronado," Max remarks. "Why does that name ring a bell?"

"The hotel has been popular for centuries," Jennifer says turning to face him.  "Celebrities, presidents, and even royalty have stayed there."

"Remember that hotel we visited in the Bahamas?" Jonathan asks. "It was designed by James and Watson Reid who were also the architects for Del Coronado."

"The Del Coronado has been around since 1888. It became a national historic landmark in 1977. Remember that article I did about historical hotels soon after Jonathan and I got married?" Jennifer asks. "I mentioned the Del in that feature."

"Yeah, now I remember what hotel you and Mr. H are talkin' about. I remember seein' a picture of it after the article was published," Max says. "That is some classy resort!"

"The resort as you call it is also featured in Some Like It Hot," Jonathan tells him.

"Oh, yeah! I saw that film when it came out."

"I'll start packing," Jennifer says as she starts to head out of the room.

"Wait a second, Mrs. H. You ain't afraid?" Max asks in surprise.

"Afraid? Afraid of what?" Jennifer asks as she stops walking and turns to him.

"I think Max is referring to Kate Morgan," Jonathan says.

"Oh, come on now, Max!" Jennifer exclaims with a smile. "You don't believe in ghost?" she asks with a chuckle.

"Ain't sayin' I do. Ain't sayin' I don't. I just know that hotel is rumored to be haunted by her spirit."

"A rumor is just what it is, Max," Jonathan replies. "Nothing more. Right?" he asks turning to his wife.

"Right. Kate Morgan haunting the Hotel Del Coronado is just a rumor. A lot of old hotels are reported to be haunted."

"All right. Don't say I didn't warn you," Max replies with a shrug.

"Don't worry. You have our word of honor. If things go bumping in the night we won't call you," Jonathan says with a smile as he pats Max on the shoulder. "I will help you pack, darling," Jonathan tells his wife. He and Jennifer walk out of the room.

"Oh, darling, I have decided to rearrange the living room. Could you help Max and me move the couches?" Jennifer asks as they reach the foyer.

"I'll help you right after dinner. We will have the living room rearranged in no time," Jonathan replies as they start to walk up the stairs with Freeway following close behind.

"That is what you think, Mr. H," Max whispers to himself as he heads toward the kitchen.

 San Diego The Following Day

That morning Jonathan and Jennifer are enjoying the ride to the Hotel Del Coronado in their Mercedes. The windows are rolled all the way down as they enjoy the breeze.  The Harts are driving down the bridge overlooking the San Diego Bay.

"Feel that breeze!" Jonathan exclaims with a smile excited about their stay at the hotel. "Several days and nights in a classy and famous hotel with my wife! What more could a man want?"

"Tell me something, darling. Did you arrange this stay at the Del before or after your business meeting was planned?" Jennifer asks with a smile turning to face Jonathan.

"I arranged our stay after. I had been planning long before I knew I would have to come down here for a meeting. I was just waiting for the perfect opportunity for an excuse for us to stay at the Del."

"How long did you plan this romantic getaway?"

"I had been planning since your article got published. It was very inspiring," Jonathan replies seductively as he turns to look at her for a few seconds before returning his attention to up ahead.

"If I knew it would be inspiring I would have postponed my research until you were able to accompany me for the day," Jennifer says seductively.

"Then our getaway wouldn't be as romantic. Besides your story would not have made such an everlasting impression on me."

"We couldn't have that now, could we?"

Jonathan chuckles as Jennifer places her arm around Jonathan's right arm.

"Didn't you train for the Navy in Coronado?"

"Yes, I did. Naval Amphibious Base Coronado is situated between the San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean. That reminds me that Hart Industries is going to test a new diving suit for the Navy. It should be ready for testing soon as we get back to Los Angeles," Jonathan replies as they cross the bridge into Coronado.

"I always wondered why you chose to join the Navy out of all the armed forces."

"I was going to join the Army, but something happened to change my mind. I figured I had a better chance of a woman falling for a man in a Navy uniform. Joining the Navy would combine two pleasures: women and exploring. You know how much I always enjoyed exploring," Jonathan says with a sly grin.

"Yes, I know," Jennifer replies with a smile. "Did any women fall for you?"

"A man who was a member of the armed forces never likes to reveal his past. Top secret. Very hush-hush," Jonathan replies softly.

"Is there some dark secret I should be concerned about?" Jennifer asks teasingly.

"No, nothing ever that hush-hush, darling. Women in the Navy never even came close to attracting me the way you did. They didn't even have your legs," Jonathan replies with a grin.

Hotel Del Coronado

Soon after Jonathan and Jennifer pull up to the main entrance of the Hotel Del Coronado.  A valet is standing on the curb. He approaches their car as they get out of the Mercedes.

"Good morning, sir. Welcome to the Hotel Del Coronado," the valet tells them with a smile.

"Thank you," Jonathan replies with a warm smile as the valet gets into their vehicle.

A bellhop walks over and starts to take out their luggage from the trunk.

"It is even more appealing than I remember," Jennifer says walking over to her husband. "The pictures do not do the Del justice," she adds as they look up at the hotel.

Jonathan smiles as he takes her hand. They walk into the lobby together holding hands. Jonathan and Jennifer walk over to the front desk with the bellhop behind them carrying their luggage. A young and handsome desk clerk is standing behind the front desk.

"Welcome to the Hotel Del Coronado," he greets the Harts with a pleasant smile.

"Thank you," Jennifer replies returning his smile.

"We have a reservation under Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Hart. My secretary made the arrangements for an early check-in," Jonathan tells the clerk.

"Yes, I remember talking to a Miss Kelly Waring about your reservation, Mr. Hart," the clerk replies as Jonathan signs the register. "Is this your first stay with us?"

"Yes, but I have visited the Del once before back in 1976," Jennifer says. "I was researching for my article at that time. I'm a journalist."

"I remember reading your article. The manager and the rest of the staff were very flattered by what you wrote.  It was very inspiring," the clerk tells her as Jonathan finishes signing.

"What did I tell you, darling?" Jonathan asks turning to her with a grin as he places the pen down.

"Here is your key," the clerk says handing Jennifer their key to the suite.

Jennifer takes the key and looks at it. She is taken aback by the room number: 3327.  She looks at the number again. Jonathan and the clerk notice her expression.

"Is something wrong, darling?" Jonathan asks turning around to face her.

"Uh, the key," Jennifer says still in shock.

"The key? I don't understand," the clerk replies puzzled.

"Uh, this key is to room 3327," Jennifer explains holding the key up for them to see.

"Oh, I am so sorry! You and your husband are staying on the same floor as the haunted room. I apologize," the clerk replies calmly as he takes the key.

Jennifer looks at Jonathan nervously before changing her facial expression to a smile.

"A natural mistake," Jennifer says as the clerk hands her the right key to their suite.

"Is there any special event taking place here during our stay?" Jonathan asks.

"Yes, Mr. Hart. Some Like It Hot is being shown on the beach tonight at eight."

"Oh, good. That is one of our favorite movies," Jonathan replies with a smile.

"Enjoy the film, Mr. and Mrs. Hart," the clerk tells the Harts as they head toward the elevator.

"Are you all right?" Jonathan asks a bit troubled by his wife's reaction to the clerk handing her the key to the haunted room.

"Yes, I am fine. I just was not expecting the desk clerk to give us the key to Kate Morgan's room by mistake," Jennifer replies reassuring with a smile as they get on the old fashioned elevator.

"Three," Jonathan tells the elevator operator.

He nods and presses the number three for them. The elevator begins to descend.

"Well, like you said it is a natural mistake. Her suite is a popular attraction during October."

"You are right. I shouldn't let a little thing like a key get to me," Jennifer replies as she takes Jonathan's hand. "We are here to enjoy ourselves. Kate Morgan is far from my mind at the moment," she adds with a wink.

The elevator operator and the bellhop exchange devious grins which go unnoticed by Jonathan and Jennifer.

Meanwhile in the lobby the desk clerk is talking to someone on the telephone.

"Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Hart just checked in. I gave them the key to Kate Morgan's room just as you instructed. No, just Mrs. Hart was surprised. I say judging by her reaction she looked like she had seen a ghost. I took care of that. Mr. and Mrs. Hart won't suspect a thing," the clerk tells the person on the other end of the line nonchalantly before hanging up the receiver.

A Corridor In The Hotel Del Coronado

Shortly after the elevator reaches the third floor.

"Third floor," the elevator operator says just before the door opens.

Jonathan and Jennifer step out with the bellhop behind them. They start to head down the corridor together as they are still holding hands. The Harts start to pass the late Kate Morgan's room on their way. Jennifer happens to look out of the corner of her eye. She sees the numbers "3327" on the door. They just walk past the room when an older couple in their eighties are walking toward their direction.  The couple are holding suitcases in their hands.

"I do not care! I am not staying in this hotel one minute more!" the wife insists nervously.

"All right, dear! You made that very clear for the past ten minutes," the husband replies calmly trying his best not to show his frustration with his spouse.

"This hotel is not going to stay in business much longer if the spirit of Kate Morgan scares the daylights out of all the guests! It is just like you to book us a room on the same floor where she stayed! You can't even make a reservation without making a mistake. Now we cannot even enjoy our visit in Coronado! We will have to settle for another hotel!"

"You are overreacting. All of this ghost talk is just getting to you. You have been having hallucinations ever since we checked in."

"Oh, I suppose you're going to tell me that those other guests that left have been suffering from hallucinations too? That seeing and hearing things is just a figment of their imaginations?" she asks with anger.

"The rumor of Kate Morgan's spirit lingering in this hotel has just resulted in people's imagination getting the best of them. There are no such things as ghost."

"You psychologists are all alike! You won't believe a word of anything unless it can be explained!" the wife exclaims losing her patience.

The couple are approaching Jonathan and Jennifer who are standing outside their suite. Jonathan is getting ready to unlock the door with their key when the wife notices them. She walks over while her husband reluctantly follows.

"If I were you I'd check out now," the wife tells Jonathan in a warning tone as he opens the door.

"Why? Is the service not up to its standards?" Jonathan asks seriously.

"I hope the food and our room will at least be up to its standards," Jennifer replies with concern. "This is a first rate hotel."

"Only if you are not bothered by spirits of the dead."

"What are you talking about?" Jonathan asks as he and Jennifer stare at the woman not sure what to take of her warning.

"Oh, never mind my wife. She is just suffering from hallucinations," the husband replies, embarrassed by his wife.

"For the last time they are not hallucinations!" the woman insists. "If other guests have been scared off then we can't all be imagining things."

"What other guests?" Jennifer asks.

"You haven't heard?!" the wife asks in shock. "People have been checking out for over a month now. Trust me there is a spirit in this hotel scaring the guests away."

"Enough about spirits. Come on! Let's go now, dear," the husband replies adamantly raising an eyebrow as he takes his wife's arm.

The couple walk away leaving Jonathan and Jennifer curious.

"Sounds like the rumor of Kate's ghost is causing people's imagination to run wild," Jennifer remarks.

"I don't know about you, but I wonder if I should give The Ghostbusters a call," Jonathan comments teasingly.

"Oh, Jonathan!" Jennifer exclaims with a smile. "If you call anyone it is going to be room service," she says with a twinkle in her eye as they walk into their suite with the bellhop.

Jonathan and Jennifer are walking out of the hotel lounge an hour later after enjoying a lunch and cocktail together.  They reach the door when an older man in his seventies bumps into Jennifer.

"Oh, my apologies, madam!" he exclaims as Jennifer's purse falls to the floor. "Allow me, please," he insists.

"Thank you, but that won't be necessary," Jennifer replies with a smile as the man bends down to pick up her purse.

Another gentleman approaches Jonathan and Jennifer from behind.

"Is there a problem?" he asks.

Jonathan and Jennifer turn to face him.

"No, this gentleman just ran into my wife by mistake," Jonathan says as the man opens Jennifer's purse.

He reaches into her purse and begins looking through her personal belongings.

"If I can be of service please don't hesitate to let me know," the gentleman replies. "I am the hotel manager."

"I'm Jonathan Hart, and this is my wife, Jennifer," Jonathan says with a warm smile as he introduces themselves.

"Now I know why your face looks so familiar, Mrs. Hart. You were here years ago when you were researching for your article. I'm delighted you decided to honor us with your presence again along with your husband. My wife loves your book. She keeps it out on our coffee table at home."

"Here is your purse, Mrs. Hart," the other man says handing Jennifer her purse.

"Thank you," Jennifer replies taking her purse as the man walks away. "I’m glad my book made such an impression on your wife. Send her my regards," she says turning her attention back to the manager.

"I shall. What honor do we owe this pleasure of your stay?"

"I have some business to take care of so I thought it would give Jennifer and I an opportunity to enjoy a few days here at this special hotel," Jonathan replies. "I hate to run, but I have to go and take care of my business right now," he says turning to his wife. "I'll call you when I'm on my way back. Meet me at the beach, darling," he tells her giving her a kiss on the cheek.

"Good luck, darling," Jennifer replies as Jonathan walks away. "It was a pleasure meeting you again," she says turning to the manager. "Now if you will excuse me I am going to get a little nap in before looking around in the gift shop."

Just as the manager is about to respond the desk clerk walks over to them.

"I'm sorry to bother you, but you have a visitor. He is waiting in your office. It's him again, sir."

"Mrs. Hart," the manager replies staring at the desk clerk with a look of annoyance. He walks out of the lounge with the desk clerk.

Jennifer watches the hotel manager and desk clerk disappear out of her sight with a look of wonder. She noticed the manager seems very upset and distraught. Jennifer walks out of the lounge herself while the man, who ran into her, is watching her from the bar.  He and the bartender exchange glances.

Hotel Del Coronado Later

That afternoon Jonathan and Jennifer are standing underneath the Dragon Tree outside the hotel. They are engaged in kissing and touching each other lovingly. They eventually walk over to the gazebo as they hold each other's hand. Once Jonathan and Jennifer reach the inside they continue making love as Jonathan embraces her tightly. While they are preoccupied someone across the way with a pair of binoculars is watching. The person turns out to be the desk clerk. He stands on the balcony of the third floor of the hotel directly behind the gazebo. He places the binoculars down and picks up a walkie-talkie from the ground beside him.

"Can you read me?" the desk clerk asks speaking into the walkie-talkie quietly.

"I can read you. Go ahead," a male voice answers.

"I am standing on a balcony overlooking the gazebo. Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Hart have been making love for a very good length of time so I think it is more than safe to say they'll be preoccupied for a long while now. Tell Jordan he can sneak into their suite now."

"Right," the male voice replies. "If the Harts look like they'll be heading back to their suite you know what to do, Clint."

"Yes, Mr. Vanderbilt," Clint replies. He places the walk-talkie down and continues spying on the Harts.

A short time later Jonathan and Jennifer are walking toward the ocean. They head down the beach which is almost deserted except for a few people relaxing in their own chair as they look out at the sea. Jonathan and Jennifer are so preoccupied enjoying their company they do not notice anyone else around. They continue holding hands. Jonathan and Jennifer continue walking toward the beach. Jonathan leans over and whispers something into Jennifer's ear. She bursts out laughing gayly. They stop walking as Jennifer leans over and whispers something into Jonathan's ear. He bursts out laughing with a wide smile before they continue strolling toward the beach.

Hotel Del Coronado Night

A beautiful sun is setting up in the sky right over the ocean that evening after six o' clock. Several hours later Jonathan and Jennifer are sitting in their own separate sand chair beside each other on the beach. They are watching the final minutes of Some Like It Hot on a big screen overlooking the beach. Candle lights are lit in the dark facing the front of the screen.  The Harts are dressed up in their finest evening clothing best suited for the occasion.

"How many times have we seen this movie, darling?" Jonathan asks in a whisper turning to his wife.

"More times than I can remember," Jennifer replies in a whisper turning to face him before they return their attention to the action in the film.

"Sugar, what do you think you're doing?" Tony Curtis' character, Joe disguised as a woman, asks Marilyn Monroe's character, Sugar Kane.

"I told you-I'm not very bright," Marilyn replies as they sit down in the backseat of the motorboat.

"Let's go!" Jack Lemmon's character, Jerry who also is in disguise of a woman, orders as he claps Joe E. Brown's character, Osgood, on the back.

The motorboat takes off.

"You don't want me, Sugar. I'm a liar and phony-a saxophone player-one of those no-goodnicks you've been running away from," Tony Curtis tells Marilyn after removing his wig and coat.

"I know. Everytime!"

"Do yourself a favor. Go back where the millionaires are- you know the sweet end of the lollipop-not the cole slaw in the face and the old socks and the old squeezed-out tube of toothpaste."

"That's right-pour it on," Marilyn replies. "Talk me out of it," she says as she twines her arms around his neck.

Marilyn kisses him resoundingly bending him over backwards till she and Tony are practically out of sight. Tony gives up, throws the wig into the ocean, and gives in kissing her.

Jack Lemmon is watching what is happening from the up front of the motorboat.

"I called Mama. She was so happy she cried. She wants you to have her wedding gown. It's white lace,"Joe E. Brown says turning to Jack Lemmon while still steering the boat.

Jonathan and Jennifer grin as they chuckle along with the rest of the guests watching the movie.

"Osgood, I can't get married in your mother's dress," Jack replies. "She and I-we're not built the same way."

"We can have it altered."

"Oh, no you don't! Look, Osgood, I'm going to level with you. We can't get married at all."

"Why not?"

"Well, to begin with I'm not a natural blonde."

"It doesn't matter."

"And I smoke. I smoke all the time."

"I don't care."

"And I have a terrible past. For three years now, I've been living with a saxophone player."

"I forgive you."

"I can never have children," Jack says desperately as tears start to form in his eyes.

"We'll adopt some."

"But you don't understand!"

"I'm a MAN!" Jack declares in his normal voice after ripping off his wig.

Jonathan and Jennifer smile with pure delight as they wait for the famous and hysterical punchline to come from the film.

"Well, nobody's perfect," Joe E. Brown replies.

Jonathan and Jennifer burst out roaring with laughter along with the rest of the viewers.

Joe E. Brown is grinning from ear to ear as Jack Lemmon looks on stunned and speechless wondering how he is going to get himself out of this predicament just as the words, "THE END" come across the screen before fading out to black.

Everyone in attendance is applauding the famous classic movie as the film had drawn to a  close. The music is playing as "THE END" along with "RELEASED THRU UNITED ARTISTS CORPORATION" reads on the black and white screen before fading out along with the film.

Jonathan and Jennifer rise from their seat along with the rest of the audience. Jennifer happens to look out of the corner of her eye and sees a woman dressed in black clothing from the 1800s walking up to the hotel from the beach. She is wearing a hat that completely covers her hair. Her back is towards Jennifer as she walks past her and the other guests.

"Kate Morgan?" Jennifer whispers quietly to herself stunned after witnessing the strange woman walk past her.

"What did you say, darling?" Jonathan asks as he faces his wife taking her hand.

"It was nothing. I was just thinking out loud. It wasn't anything important," Jennifer replies turning to her husband with a smile.

Jonathan smiles as they start to walk back to the hotel together holding hands. He doesn't believe his wife's explanation, but decides it is better not to press her for what was on her mind.

"Did you know I had a crush on Marilyn Monroe?" Jonathan asks.

"Oh, I thought you had a crush on Barbara Stanwyck," Jennifer replies taken by surprise.

"That was before I saw Marilyn in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes."

"Do you think men prefer blondes?" Jennifer asks coyly.

"Well, I can't speak for every gentlemen, but I personally prefer redheads. Blonds may have more fun, but I find redheads to be much more fun," Jonathan replies seductively as they stop walking. They turn to look at each other. "Let's get ourselves some Champagne. I feel up to reenacting our own version of the scene on the yacht."

"We can dim the lights and have some soft music playing on the radio. It would be just perfect if we had a yacht."

"Oh, my dearest darling, I'm afraid my yacht is being repaired at the moment. We'll have to settle for our suite. What do you say?" Jonathan asks imitating Cary Grant.

"I say it is the thought that counts, and I hope you do not plan on doing that imitation all night," Jennifer replies with a slight grin as she playfully pats Jonathan on the cheek.

"What imitation? Are you trying to flatter me?" Jonathan asks continuing to imitate Cary.  They continue their walk.

"Flattery isn't the word that comes to mind, darling," Jennifer replies with a smile as they reach the lobby.

They walk into the lounge which is empty.  Jonathan and Jennifer approach the bar where the bartender is cleaning up.

"I'm sorry, but the bar is closed," he says.

"That is all right. We just want a bottle of Champagne and two glasses," Jonathan replies taking out his wallet. "Here's something for attending to two of your guests after hours," Jonathan adds handing him a hundred dollars. "You can charge the bill to our room," he says writing down their room number along with their name on a piece of paper.

The bartender nods before taking the cash which he stashes away in his pocket. He picks up two Champagne glasses which he hands to Jonathan.  The bartender then disappears out of sight before returning with a bottle of Champagne chilling in an ice bucket.  He hands the ice bucket to Jennifer.

"Thank you," Jennifer replies taking the ice bucket.

"Thank you. We appreciate it," Jonathan says with a smile.

The bartender nods as they walk out of the lounge. They approach the elevator. Jennifer presses the button. The door to the elevator opens after a few seconds of waiting. The Harts are surprised the elevator operator is not in the elevator attending to his job.

"I wonder where the elevator operator is," Jennifer comments as she presses the button for floor three.

"Maybe he got lucky," Jonathan replies.

The door to the elevator close. The elevator begins to descend to the third floor. After reaching the second floor all of the sudden the elevator stops.

"That is strange. I remember overhearing the desk clerk say the elevator was examined by maintenance recently," Jennifer says wondering why the elevator stopped.

Jonathan presses the call button, but there is no response. Jonathan and Jennifer glance at each other nervously.  Jonathan presses the alarm button several times. Once again there is no response. He presses the door open button in the hope that the button just got jammed. That course of action doesn't help the Harts get out of the predicament they found themselves in. Jonathan tries pressing the door close button for the same reason he pressed the door open button. Of course that option doesn't work either. He presses the button for floor two. Jonathan and Jennifer wait a little while, but no one comes to their rescue.

"Darling, do not  panic. Someone is likely to come to our rescue," Jonathan says turning to his wife.

"If someone doesn't come to our rescue then what?"

"We try calling for help," Jonathan replies taking the Champagne out of the ice bucket. He begins to open the bottle.

"I guess we might as well not let the Champagne go to waste while we wait," Jennifer says with a sigh as Jonathan starts pouring Champagne into their glasses."Oh, do you know what this reminds me of?" she asks with a slight smile as they sit on the ground. They start sipping their Champagne.

"What does it remind you of?"

"Darling, do you remember the time we got locked up in the garage?"

"Oh, yes. We had given Max the night off.  It was the one time the garage door opener decided to open the garage only to shut the door before we got out."

"We never worried about getting locked up in the garage. That opener never once before worked on the garage. That night you decided to give it a try cause you didn't feel up to opening the door yourself. "

"The moment I drove the Mercedes in the door shut. Naturally the opener wouldn't operate again for us."

"You were so mad you threw the garage door opener against the wall, and it broke," Jennifer says with a chuckle as she pours herself some more Champagne.

"Yes, but at least we never got shut up in the garage ever again," Jonathan replies pouring himself some more Champagne.

"Carrying the key to the door to the main house from then on worked to our advantage."

"This time we can be thankful that we have something to drink," Jonathan says with a smile as they place an arm around each other.

"If we drink anymore Champagne we are going to run out before we have a chance to react the scene," Jennifer says looking at the half empty bottle.

"Hopefully we won't be in here that much longer," Jonathan replies as they finish sipping their glass.

"If we are can we reschedule shooting the scene?" Jennifer asks coyly.

"I think I can persuade the director to put off shooting the scene," Jonathan replies with a devious grin. "I do not think the head of the studio will face bankruptcy if it is delayed for another night."

"We need only one take," Jennifer says with a wink. "How about we rehearse while we wait?"

"I can't think of a better way to occupy my time. Besides it will give us a chance to get reacquainted," Jonathan replies with a big smile. He leans over to kiss Jennifer when all of a sudden the lights go out.

"I guess getting reacquainted is going to have to wait," Jennifer says with a sigh as she and Jonathan are surrounded in complete darkness.

"I think now is the time to try calling for help," Jonathan replies. "Darling, let me have one of your shoes, please," he says as he manages to get some light from a lighter he had in one of his pockets.

Jennifer takes off one of her high heels and hands the shoe to Jonathan. He rises and walks over to the door. He takes the heel of her shoe and begins banging on the elevator door as he holds the lighter in his other hand.

"HELP!" Jonathan yells calmly as he continues banging on the door. "Is anyone out there?!!!" Jonathan yells out. "WE'RE TRAPPED INSIDE THE ELEVATOR!"

While Jonathan is continuing banging and yelling for help from inside the elevator the lobby and corridor are completely deserted so his pleas go unheard.

Meanwhile a thunderstorm is brewing up outside the Hotel Del Coronado. As the thunder booms and lightning strikes lightning is appearing on the photograph of Kate Morgan in her old room.

An hour later the maintenance crew is working on getting the elevator working again. The lights come on in the elevator as Jonathan and Jennifer are lying on the ground next to each other asleep.  Jonathan hears the maintenance crew up above and wakes up. He looks around and sees to their luck the lights came back on. He turns around and slowly shakes his wife's shoulder.

"Darling, wake up," Jonathan tells Jennifer.

She slowly opens her eyes and wakes up. Seeing the lights back on and hearing the maintenance crew at work she looks around with a smile relieved that soon they'll get out of the elevator. She turns to Jonathan and looks at her husband with a grin. Jonathan is looking up at her with a smile. He is too relieved that rescue has come to their aid. Jennifer hiccups as she is tipsy from the Champagne that they had been drinking. Jonathan chuckles and starts to help his wife to her feet.

The maintenance crew is opening the top hatch to the elevator when Jonathan is helping Jennifer step out with her shoes and glasses of Champagne in her hands. He comes out with the ice-bucket containing the now empty bottle. The crew have a look of complete shock on their faces as they come out of the elevator.

"Oh, thank you! Service is exceptional at this hotel," Jennifer says to the crew with a warm smile.

"Yes, it looks like we just missed it by one floor," Jonathan comments with a smile turning to the men who are still stunned.

Hotel Del Coronado Hours Later

Jonathan and Jennifer are sound asleep resting in the bed in their suite. There is a sound of footsteps in the corridor.  Lightning strikes as Jennifer slowly opens her eyes and hears the sound of footsteps.  She sits up in bed and looks toward the door. She can see the shadow of footsteps walking along the corridor as there is little light coming from the hall.

She turns to Jonathan and gently shakes him hoping to wake him up.

"Jonathan!" Jennifer exclaims quietly.

Jonathan is so exhausted he cannot be roused from his sound sleep. Jennifer decides to investigate herself. She picks up her robe which she puts on before placing her feet in her slippers. She walks over to a table and turns on a low lamp. Quietly she tiptoes to the door and opens it. She stands in the doorway and looks out into the corridor.  She doesn't see anything when all of a sudden she hears footsteps coming toward her. The mysterious woman dressed in black and old fashioned clothing she saw on the beach is approaching her. Jennifer gasps upon seeing her. Once again the woman has her face turned away so Jennifer cannot see who she is. Jennifer watches as the woman brushes past her and walks toward the haunted room: 3327.

"Wait!" Jennifer exclaims shouting out to her.

The woman ignores her and continues her walk to the room. Jennifer fixes the door so she can follow her without locking herself out of her own suite. She quietly hurries toward the woman who is reaching the room.

"Please wait! I just want to talk to you!" Jennifer begs calmly in a comforting tone. She doesn't want to scare the woman away that is what she sees before her very eyes is a woman: not Kate Morgan's spirit making her presence known to her. Lightning strikes as the woman opens the door and walks into the room. She shuts the door as she disappears into the room before Jennifer can catch up to her. Jennifer walks up to the room. She sighs and knocks on the door quietly. She tries opening the door after not receiving a response. The door is locked tight therefore preventing Jennifer from having access to the room. She sighs in disappointment and walks back to her suite. Jennifer walks into the room and is shocked to find the entire suite in darkness.

"What is going on?" Jennifer wonders to herself quietly.

The door shuts itself with a loud bang. The lights flicker on and off for a few moments before returning to the way they were before Jennifer left. She starts toward the bedroom when all of a sudden lightning strikes. The windows in the living area burst open. Jennifer hurries over to the windows before the pouring rain gets the room wet. She quickly and quietly shuts the windows. She heaves a sigh of relief and hopes that there will not be anymore spiritual phenomenons tonight. Jennifer returns to the bedroom where she sees the lamp she turned on is still on. She looks over at Jonathan who is still sound asleep having not been disturbed by any of the strange occurrences his wife just witnessed. She smiles and turns the lamp off. She takes off her robe which she places on the bedpost and takes off her slippers before getting back into bed with her husband. She lies back down next to Jonathan and slowly closes her eyes drifting back to sleep putting the strange occurrences out of her mind.

Once she is asleep the door to the suite quietly opens by an unseen person. The person quietly and discreetly walks over to the dresser. The intruder notices Jonathan and Jennifer are asleep. The intruder opens Jennifer's purse and places the room key back before removing the lipstick.  The purse is zipped up, and the intruder hurries away before being caught.  The door is shut once the intruder has made the way out into the corridor. The intruder is none other than the desk clerk: Clint! He looks at the lipstick container and throws it up into the air catching it in his hand before walking away.

Hotel Del Coronado The Next Morning

Jennifer is still sound asleep exhausted after the strange things she witnessed during the early hours of the morning and the storm that kept her awake. The storm has past, and it is peaceful on the grounds once again. Jonathan walks quietly into the bedroom carrying a breakfast tray. He places it on the table by the bed and leans over his wife. He kisses her on the neck causing her to smile gayly before waking up.

"Good morning, darling. Your breakfast is served. I delivered it personally," Jonathan replies picking up the tray before placing it on his wife's lap as she sits up in bed.

"Breakfast is exactly what I need right now," Jennifer says picking up her napkin as Jonathan sits down on the side of the bed facing her.

"Do you want to tell me about it?" Jonathan asks as she places the napkin on her lap.

"Darling, it isn't worth mentioning," Jennifer replies with a reassuring smile as she picks up her silverware. "Hmm, breakfast looks delicious," she says looking at all the food on the tray.

"It is worth mentioning if you're unnerved by something."

"I do not know what you're talking about," Jennifer replies as she starts to cut up her food.

"Jennifer, you have that look," Jonathan says seriously. "Now come on. Tell me what has been on your mind since last night."

Jennifer sighs as she places her silverware down and looks up at her husband.

"Jonathan, I think someone wants us to leave the Hotel Del Coronado. I've seen a woman wearing old fashioned clothing walk by me twice last night."

"All of this talk about Kate Morgan has gotten you imagining things. You are just nervous after what the woman told us after we checked in."

"I not only saw a woman resembling Kate Morgan. I actually saw her enter Kate's old room when you were asleep last night. I knocked and tried the door. It was locked."

"I'll admit that is strange, but that is nothing to be nervous about. Did you see this woman on the beach after we watched the movie?"

"Yes, that is not all though. When I came back all of the lights were off. Then the door shut itself. Lights flicked on and off. Jonathan, I do not believe Kate Morgan is haunting this hotel anymore than you do, but I believe someone is deliberately trying to scare the guests away. Oh, and someone stole my room key. I had to ask the maid to let me in after you left."

Jonathan walks over to the dresser and picks up her purse. He starts to go through her purse when he instantly comes across the room key. He takes it out and turns around showing it to his wife. A look of shock comes across her face. Jennifer takes the tray off of her lap and places it down on the bed before rising. She walks over to him and takes the key.

"Jonathan, I swear to you this key was not in my purse yesterday afternoon!" Jennifer insists.

"I believe you, darling," Jonathan replies placing his arms around her. "I just cannot believe any of this is happening. The only explanation is someone is going to any lengths to drive the guests away including us," he says as he walks toward a table. "I am going to check us out."

"I am not going to be intimidated into leaving this hotel just because someone wants to drive us away. This is one guest that is not going anywhere!" Jennifer insists adamantly. "But if you rather we pack up and leave we will do just that."

"No, we'll stay," Jonathan replies placing the receiver back on the hook. "After breakfast we will have a talk with the manager and hear what he has to say. If he won't talk we'll just have to take matters into our own hands."

"I’m sorry I did not tell you any of this before. I was hoping these strange occurrences would come to an end. I didn't want to spoil our romantic getaway, darling."

"You didn't spoil it, darling," Jonathan replies with a smile as he walks over to her. He places his arms around her and comforts her. "We'll find out what is going on. No one is going to get away with scaring my wife," he tells Jennifer in a comforting tone as he strokes her hair.

Jennifer looks up at Jonathan and smiles.

"Thank you for being so understanding," Jennifer says before kissing him on the lips.

Jonathan smiles and kisses her on the lips. All of a sudden they are caught off guard by a spine-chilling scream coming from the hotel grounds.

Jonathan and Jennifer take off hurrying away to find out where the screaming is coming from and what all the commotion is about. The screaming comes to a stop as they reach the exterior staircase leading to the beach. A crowd has gathered around a young man who is an employee of the hotel.  He is distraught and white as a sheet. He turns toward the people behind him. He brushes past Jonathan and Jennifer. Clint is standing facing the crowd and turns to them.

"Everybody just calm down. I'll call the police right away. Please just go about your business and let the authorities handle this," he says as he addresses the crowd calmly.

The crowd starts to break up.

"Who is dead?" Jennifer asks as Clint walks up to them.

"The hotel manager. He has been shot. It was a suicide."

"Suicide?"

"How can you be so sure?" Jonathan asks.

"There is a note in his hand and a pistol by his side. There is also a gunshot wound to his head. I cannot understand the circumstances surrounding his death. This staircase is exactly where Kate Morgan was discovered."

"And her death was also listed as a suicide," Jennifer adds totally blown away by the news.

"Yes, you know Kate was shot in the head by a pistol. Excuse me, Mr. and Mrs. Hart. I need to call the police," Clint replies as he walks past them.

By now the crowd has disappeared. They had gone about their business. Jonathan and Jennifer look down below toward where the manager's lifeless body lies.

"Come on. Let's go stay in our suite until the police arrive, darling," Jonathan says as they walk away holding hands. "His death proves your suspicions. Someone is definitely trying to put the Hotel Del Coronado out of business."

Jonathan and Jennifer are strolling down the beach as they talk to the officer in charge of overseeing the manager's death.

"What makes you suspect the manager's death was foul play?" the lieutenant asks.

"His body was discovered on the very same staircase where Kate Morgan's body was found. She also died from a gunshot wound to the head from a pistol," Jennifer replies.

"That is a very interesting theory and eerie coincidence I admit, but how do you explain the suicide note?"

"Someone sure went to a lot of trouble to make his death resemble Kate's," Jonathan says. "A good hotel manager wouldn't commit suicide where his body could be found the next morning by guests and staff. I only met him for a minute, but he did not strike me as the kind of man that would commit suicide in bad taste."

"I see what you mean, Mr. Hart. If this is a homicide who had a motive?"

"I can't answer that question. My wife and I think someone is out to ruin the hotel's business. A lot of strange incidents have been happening."

"We thought the story of Kate's ghost was just causing people's imagination get the best of them, but after what I experienced I believe someone is deliberating going to lengths to drive the guests away," Jennifer explains.

"Guests have been checking out for over a month," Jonathan adds. "I am sure you noticed the Del isn't exactly what you would call a popular attraction for guests at the moment."

"The manager was called to his office by the desk clerk, Clint. I suggest you question him. The manager seemed very upset at being told he had a visitor in his office. How much do you know about Kate Morgan, lieutenant?" Jennifer asks.

"I know just as much as you do and anyone else who has knowledge of her story. Everyone around here knows how Kate spent her time at the Hotel Del Coronado and the circumstances leading up to her death. I know you're just trying to help, Mr. and Mrs. Hart, but this is for us police officers to handle."

"Is that your polite way of telling us to not to investigate and just enjoy our stay?" Jonathan asks as they stop walking and turn to face him.

"Let me put it this way. I prefer if you let me and the rest of my team handle this investigation. If foul play was the cause of death I promise you I'll let you know what we find out. Besides if this a case of homicide it would be very dangerous for you to attempt to solve the crime on your own. My advice is just go about your business and enjoy your stay. You came up here to enjoy yourself. There isn't any reason for you to get involved. Have a good day and be careful," the lieutenant replies. He walks away.

"I know he meant well, but how exactly are we supposed to enjoy ourselves after what happened?" Jennifer asks turning to her husband.

"Yes, ghosts and murder are not my idea of a pleasant stay."

"Hauntings and killings are not advertised on travel brochures for a reason."

"Darling, do you have any idea why anyone would want to put the hotel out of business?"

"It could be the land. Or the money."

"I remember reading about a ship that was shipwrecked on the beach during the Great Depression. What was the name?"

"SS Monte Carlo. It was shipwrecked about a quarter mile south on New Year's Day in 1937. There has been speculation that may be $150,000  worth of silver dollar coins remaining in the wreckage."

"Because the ship was illegal once on shore ownership was never claimed," Jonathan says. "I'm going to call Frank. Maybe that new diving suit can be tested sooner than I expected. If there is a fortune worth of silver dollar coins in that wreckage hopefully it can be found."

Hotel Del Coronado Later

Jonathan and Jennifer are sitting in their suite a few minutes later. Jennifer is sitting on the sofa while Jonathan sits nearby talking to Frank on the telephone.

"Yes, it seems The Hotel Del Coronado is trying to be put out of business. That is why I am calling. Do you know when the diving suit can be tested yet? It is all ready?" Jonathan asks with a smile turning to his wife who returns the smile at hearing the good news. "I know this is asking a lot of you, Frank, but I want you to bring the diving suit down tonight. The amount of $150,00 worth of silver dollar coins could be among the wreck of the SS Monte Carlo. Meet us on the Colorado Beach after midnight. We will walk to the wreckage together.  I do not want to take any chances of being caught. Thanks. See you tonight," Jonathan replies hanging up the receiver.

"Darling, if the coins are the reason for all the mysterious events that have been happening around here they most likely had been taken by now," Jennifer says as Jonathan sits down next to her.

"True, but so far the coins are our only lead.  I have another reason for wanting to take a look at the remains of that ship.  I want to see the SS Monte Carlo myself."

"And you want to see that diving suit be tested yourself before you hand it over to the Navy," Jennifer replies with a smile.

"Yes," Jonathan says with a grin. "You are eager to bring your camera along so you can get photographs."

Jennifer nods as she smiles. She can't refrain from hiding her feelings.  She and Jonathan always knew what the other was thinking even when they were silent.

 Coronado Beach That Night

Jonathan and Jennifer stand on the beach as they watch Frank diving under the water of the wreckage searching for any coins. Jonathan holds a flashlight in his hand so they can see in the dark of the night. A pair of binoculars is focusing on Jonathan and Jennifer out of sight. It is Clint spying on them again. He picks up the walkie-talkie.

"I think we may have a problem,  Mr. Vanderbilt," Clint says into the machine. "The Harts are overlooking the wreckage of the SS Monte Carlo. A man is diving under the ship."

"Frank, you have been down there long enough. You can come on up," Jonathan yells out to his employee.

Frank comes up from the water and approaches the Harts. He takes off his diving mask.

"I am sorry, Mr. Hart. If there are any coins down there I couldn't find them. Do you want me to try again tomorrow night?"

"No, that won't be necessary. If you could not find any coins during the length of time you were down there I do not see any point of searching again," Jonathan replies with a sigh.

"I did the best I could."

"I know you did.  I am just disappointed that you couldn't find any coins. That means Jennifer and I are right back where we started. Thanks for driving all the way out to San Diego from Los Angeles, Frank," Jonathan replies managing a smile as he pats Frank on the shoulder. "On the bright side now we know the diving suit is ready for the Navy to use. Go back to your hotel and get some rest."

"I will right away. Goodnight, Mr. and Mrs. Hart," Frank says with a smile as he walks away leaving the Harts alone.

"Goodnight," Jennifer replies as she and Jonathan watch Frank walk out of sight.

"You told me this morning the land could be a reason for driving the guests away," Jonathan says turning to his wife.

"Yes, in 1960 local millionaire, John Alessio, purchased the hotel. He spent two million dollars remodeling The Del before turning ownership over to M. Larry Lawrence in 1963. Mr. Lawrence planned to develop the land around the resort before demolishing it. He changed his mind. Larry Lawrence did spend a fortune refurbishing and expanding much of The Hotel Del Coronado," Jennifer replies.

"Was it ever made known why Lawrence changed his mind?"

"No, not that I know of, darling," Jennifer replies. "Are you thinking someone knew about Lawrence's plans and decided to carry it out without his knowledge? He still is the owner."

"That is exactly what I am thinking. The Hotel Del Coronado is a perfect place to spend a vacation, but someone else doesn't seem to think so," Jonathan says. He happens to look up and notices Clint walking away. It is took dark for Jonathan to tell who has been spying on them even with the flashlight.

Jonathan takes off walking after Clint. Instrumental music which is a mixture of Down Among The Sheltering Palms/ La Cumprasita/ I Wanna Be Loved By You, which was featured in a scene in Some Like It Hot, begins to play. Jennifer looks around and notices Clint. She gasps in shock. Clint hears Jonathan's footsteps and begins running hurrying to get away. Jonathan nows begins rushing after Clint keen on finding out who has been spying on him and his wife. Jennifer joins in the chase. She begins running after Jonathan and Clint.  They are rushing toward the direction of the hotel.

The Harts and Clint are reaching the Hotel Del Coronado. They approach the beach. Clint is still ahead of Jonathan and Jennifer. All three of them hurry toward the hotel. Clint reaches the resort ahead of his pursuers. He begins to climb up one of the posts of the veranda. Jonathan reaches the hotel and looks up. He sees Clint still climbing as he makes his way to the second floor. Jonathan places his flashlight into a pocket. He begins to climb up one of the posts. Jennifer is watching the chase between her husband and Clint.  She reluctantly starts to climb up one of the posts carefully.

By now Jonathan is catching up to Clint who is climbing over a railing.  Clint leaps onto a balcony and begins to open a window to a room. The music comes to a close. The room is in complete darkness when the window opens, and Clint steps his way in.  A lamp is turned on. A young and sexy blond woman, in her mid twenties, has been awaken out of her sound sleep by the intrusion. She sits up in bed as she takes her hand off of the switch.

"Hey, what are you doing in my room?" the blond asks in a smoky and breathless voice. She has a look of confusion on her face.

Clint ignores her as he walks toward the door. He opens it and steps out shutting the door behind him. Just then Jonathan steps into the room through the window that was left open.  He is about to hurry toward the door when the blond speaks to him.

"My, you're such a good looking man!" she exclaims with a smile delighted that the new intruder is so handsome. "Can we go out some time?" she asks as she expresses an interest in Jonathan.

"You'll have to ask my wife," Jonathan replies with a smile amused that the young woman is attracted to him. "Excuse me," he says as he rushes toward the door.  He opens it and walks out shutting the door behind him.

Now Jennifer steps into the room through the window and starts toward the door when the young woman speaks to her.

"You have such a handsome husband!" she exclaims with a smile.

"Yes," Jennifer says as she stops walking and turns to face her with a smile. "And I intend to keep him," she adds aware of her attraction to her husband. She runs to the door and opens it. She shuts it on her way out.

Jennifer walks into the corridor and looks around for her husband. Jonathan is walking toward her from the other side of the hall. He sighs as he walks over to her.

"He got away," he says. "He disappeared out of sight. I couldn't even tell which direction the man went."

Before Jennifer can reply the elevator opens, and the elevator operator sticks his head out.

"Mr. and Mrs. Hart, you're on the second floor. Your suite is on the next floor," he tells them.

"Darling, I knew we should have been paying attention to where we were going. This always happens we get into a conversation," Jonathan says turning to Jennifer. "I knew we should have taken the elevator," he adds as they walk over to the elevator.

"You are right as always. We end up on the wrong floor when we take the stairs, darling," Jennifer replies. "I guess the extra exercise isn't helping our brain," she says as they step on the elevator.

The elevator operator presses the button for the third floor. The door close as the elevator begins to descend. The elevator operator eyes Jonathan and Jennifer suspiciously.

 Hotel Del Coronado That Night

Soon after Jennifer and Jonathan are unwinding in their suite. Jonathan is giving Jennifer a massage on their bed. She is stretched out as Jonathan hovers over her massaging her neck.

"Darling, who do you suspect was spying on us?" Jennifer asks.

"From what I could make out of his figure it looks like our mystery man could be Clint. If my hunch is correct it would make sense now why he gave you the key to Kate's room when we checked in."

"Do you suppose us getting trapped in an elevator was also planned or merely a coincidence?"

"I wish I could say a coincidence, darling, but my instinct tells me someone planned to have us trapped inside."

"I wonder what the lieutenant will find out about the pistol that was used to kill the manager," Jennifer says turning around to face her husband.

"I would not be at all surprised if the pistol was registered to the victim himself just like the pistol was registered to Kate," Jonathan replies as he begins massaging her waist.

"I have the same instinct," Jennifer says. "Now you have that look," she adds looking at Jonathan seriously.

"What look?" Jonathan asks as he stops giving her a massage.

"That look that shows you rather we be talking about something else," Jennifer replies with a grin.

"We did come here for a romantic getaway. This past half hour does not exactly live up to my expectations of romantic," Jonathan says.

"Oh, Jonathan, I am sorry! Just with everything going on since our arrival I forgot all about the reason we are staying here," Jennifer replies apologetically.

"I may be willing to forgive you for being distracted if I can be persuaded," Jonathan says with a sly grin.

"What kind of bargain did you have in mind?" Jennifer asks coyly as she places her hands around his neck as he looks over her with a smile.

"It is something you and I both enjoy doing here in bed," Jonathan replies seductively with a devious grin.

"Oh, that!" Jennifer exclaims with a smile as she catches on to what Jonathan has in mind.

Jonathan nods as he continues looking at her with a twinkle in his eye.

"I can be persuaded if you slip into something more desirable," Jonathan replies softly as he reaches down and kisses her on the neck.

Jennifer smiles and shoots her husband a wink. He lifts himself off of her and sits up beside her.

"I will be right back. Let me just slip into something more comfortable," Jennifer replies coyly with a smile as she rises from the bed.

Jonathan smiles looking forward to finally making love to his wife. He rises from the bed and walks over to the door leading to their balcony. He opens the door and walks out onto the balcony leaving the door ajar. Jonathan sighs as he breathes the fresh air. He stands looking out over the beach admiring the peaceful sound of the waves and enjoying the atmosphere as he leans over the railing.

Jennifer is standing in the bathroom in front of the mirror looking over her new pajamas that she had purchased recently before their trip. Just as she reaches over to switch off the light she sees the image of Kate Morgan appear in the mirror.

Startled Jennifer stands back speechless with fright as she is in a state of shock. Kate's image continues reflecting in the mirror as Jennifer struggles to recover from shock. She starts to yell for Jonathan, but she cannot find the strength. She stutters as she finally manages to scream out her husband's name.

"JONATHAN!" Jennifer yells out terrified.

She rushes toward the door and starts to open it when Jonathan bursts in alarmed by his wife's scream.

"Jennifer, what is it?" Jonathan asks with worry on his face as he places his hands around his wife's shoulders in an effort to calm her down.

"Kate's image is reflecting in the mirror," Jennifer replies nervously managing to compose herself.

Jonathan looks at her and turns toward the mirror. He walks over to the mirror and looks over it only seeing the reflection of himself.

"Darling, I do not know how to tell you this, but Kate's image is gone," he says turning around to face her.

"I was not imagining things," Jennifer insists annoyed at the fact someone deliberately is trying to scare her to death.

"I believe you.  I think we need to check out tomorrow. I do not want you to be scared to death like this. We can have our own romantic getaway somewhere else another time I have to leave town for business," Jonathan replies.

"I am not leaving this hotel until we find out once and for all who is doing this and expose them!" Jennifer insists walking over to him. "Like I said this morning this is one guest that is not going anywhere!"

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, I am sure. I am more than sure. I am very angry and annoyed that anyone would go to lengths to put this hotel out of business by scaring guests off. First thing after breakfast you and I are going to get to the bottom of what has been going on. After the murder and now this I am more determined than ever to put an end to this scheme," Jennifer replies with assurance.

Jonathan looks at her and nods in agreement. He places his arms around her as they walk out of the bathroom together.

Hotel Del Coronado The Next Day

Jonathan and Jennifer walk into the lobby the following morning. Some moving men are carrying some furniture and decorations out. They are heading toward the front entrance of the hotel. They watch the men carry on with their activities.

"Looks like some remodeling is being done," Jennifer comments as they linger near the stairs.

"The manager has been dead for only a day. There are only a few guests left after the murder, but you would never know it with the way the staff is acting."

"They're acting as if nothing has happened. I wonder how the lieutenant would react knowing what is taking place."

"You know it may be a way to the manager's office. We just need to find out where the remodeling is being done," Jonathan says turning to his wife.

A man approaches them.

"I wonder what the manager's office and other rooms will look like after they're finished," he comments.

"My wife and I were just wondering what the renovations will look like ourselves," Jonathan tells him.

"Oh, they're not being remodeled. They're being repainted. I overheard the desk clerk and the elevator operator talk about it," he says. "Some painters are coming in tomorrow."

He walks off leaving the Harts alone. Jonathan turns to Jennifer with a smile after an idea springs to mind.

"Darling, how good are you with a paint brush?"

Hotel Del Coronado Later

Several hours later Jonathan and Jennifer walk into the lobby carrying ladders, cans of paint, brushes, and other painting equipment with them. They have mustaches on and are wearing white caps with matching jeans, shirt, and shoes. Jennifer has her hair comb which is sticking up underneath the cap. They walk over to the front desk. Jonathan clicks on the call bell. Clint has been standing underneath the desk. He jumps up with a start at the sound.

"Oh, sorry, my man! I didn't see you under there," Jonathan says in a deep voice as he and Jennifer are in disguise. "We are here. Where do you want us to start?"

"But you weren't supposed to be arriving until tomorrow afternoon," Clint replies taken by surprise.

"No, we were told to come here today to paint," Jonathan says. "Right, Joe?" he asks as he turns to Jennifer.

"Yep," Jennifer replies in a low deep voice.

"I will have some members of the staff help you with your equipment and show you where to start."

"That is kind of you. You know you were lucky to get us when you called. Joe and me stay very busy painting. We paint every day of the week including Sundays. Right, Joe?" Jonathan asks turning to Jennifer.

"Yep," Jennifer replies in a low deep voice again.

"You know this is some classy place you got here. That last job we had you should have seen that joint. Whoa! We never saw such a messy place in our lives! We have been on the job for years. We have seen just about ever kind of place in the worst conditions you can imagine. Right, Joe?"

"Yep."

"Say, do you have any idea what color is in mind? Joe and me here like to know what is expected before we get started right on the job. Right, Joe?"

"Yep."

"You know I think yellow might look nice or blue. If you don't mind me saying so you could use some different colors. You need to lighten the joint up a bit. Make it more colorful. Get my drift? You get it?" Jonathan asks turning to Jennifer again. "Right, Joe?"

"Yep."

"Oh, pardon me for yakking on. Joe here says I talk too much."

"Yep," Jennifer says managing to conceal a grin at their rouse.

"Do you think we could set our equipment down? It is getting mighty heavy if I do say so. Isn't it heavy, Joe?" Jonathan asks as they set their equipment down.

"Yep."

"I'll get you set up right away. Just hold on," Clint replies. "I'll be right back."

He walks away leaving Jonathan and Jennifer alone.

"Well, I think this disguise is going to work. What do you say, darling?" Jonathan asks turning to her as he speaks in his normal voice.

"Yep, darling. It surely looks like it," Jennifer replies in her normal voice as she and Jonathan turn to each other with a smile.

Minutes later Jonathan and Jennifer are standing on their ladders painting a corridor outside the manager's office. Their back is toward the door. They are standing next to each other as they paint slowly and carefully taking their time.

"Darling, I never really painted before except in art class. I hope we will be convincing long enough to find out what is going on," Jennifer says in her normal voice as she whispers.

"With the way you are painting, darling, one would think you were a natural born painter," Jonathan replies turning to her with a smile. "I just hope they like our work so we won't have to keep this up."

"If they don't they'll just have to remember the phrase, you get what you pay for," Jennifer says nonchalantly.

"I am just glad the real painters were willing to allow us to take over their job."

"Anyone is willing to do a favor in return for a handsome fee especially when they are being paid by my husband," Jennifer comments as she stands back and looks at her work.

Suddenly Clint, the bellhop, and the bartender walk into the corridor.

"Say, Joe, be a pal and hand me that bigger brush. We'd be days or weeks painting if I used this tiny little brush here," Jonathan says in disguise.

Jennifer walks down the ladder and picks up the big paint brush on the floor. She gets back on her ladder and hands it to Jonathan.

"Thanks, Joe," Jonathan replies with a grin taking the brush as the men come up to them.

"Yep," Jennifer says in her deep low male voice again with her back turned as they continue painting.

"You are taking your time. Why are you not painting any faster?" Clint asks wondering why Jonathan and Jennifer are being slow at their task. "You are not as fast as the other painters."

"We wanna get it right," Jonathan replies turning around to face them. "We do not wanna have to come back. Our boss is really critical about getting it right. Right, Joe?" he asks turning to Jennifer.

"Yep," Jennifer says her fake mustache starting to itch which she is trying her best to conceal.

"Oh, well, carry on then. That other guy doesn't say much," Clint remarks as he and the other men walk straight over to the office.

"Yeah, Joe here not really a talker. You get him around a bunch of pretty gals, and he'll be talking up a storm," Jonathan says before continuing on painting.

"Yep," Jennifer says as she is unable to stop herself from wiggling her chin before sneezing.

Clint knocks on the office door. A moment later the door to the office is slightly opened a jar allowing him and his companions to enter. Jonathan and Jennifer turn around to watch as they disappear into the office before the door is shut.

"Jonathan, I am about to sneeze again," Jennifer whispers as she feels a sneeze coming on.

He reaches over and places a finger under her nose to prevent her from sneezing.

Clint, the bellhop, and the bartender are standing talking to three other people facing them in the office when they are taken by surprise by a loud sneeze from outside.

"That is just one of the painters," the bartender explains.

"Now that the manager is dead we need to talk about getting our hands on the land. Time is running out. We need to get the rest of the guests out of here soon as possible," the older man they are talking to seated at the desk says. His wife is standing next to him. The man, who bumped into Jennifer and stole her key to the suite, is standing on the other side.

"Yes, I personally can’t wait to see this old fashioned resort demolished," the wife replies. "I've been playing the role of Kate Morgan long enough. Wearing those clothes and hat have really become a bore. I say we give up this scheme of scaring the guests away."

"One thing at a time, dear," the man says kissing his wife on her hand. "Clint, I applaud you for helping me make your former employer's death look like a suicide. You finding an old pistol exactly the kind Kate used to kill herself made my ploy work out every way I expected to."

"Thank you, Mr. Vanderbilt. I was just doing what you are paying me to do. I was more than happy to help you in covering up the murder," Clint replies with a smile. "I think the real credit goes to you. You know all about the facts of Kate's death. The rumor of her haunting the hotel has really worked to our advantage."

Meanwhile Jonathan and Jennifer have moved their equipment along with their ladders. They are now standing right next to the office as they now paint on the other wall. They listen in on the conversation in the office as they continue to go about painting.

"I am just glad the police bought the suicide story," the bellhop says.

"With the suicide note I do not see why they would have a reason to think otherwise, Jordan," the bartender replies turning to face him.

"Let's return to discussing business," Mr. Vanderbilt says as he leans forward. "I have a contract to fill in only a matter of time. I put a lot of money into our venture. I'm paying a fortune.  Then there's the matter of keeping Lawrence from going to the police once he finds out I had the Hotel Del Coronado bulldozed to the ground. He and I have known each other for many years. I am sure he can be persuaded from going to the authorities since he once had a dream of demolishing the hotel himself years ago. If Lawrence feels differently than we will just have to find a way for him to be cooperative.  You only have a few days left to get scare the wits out of the other guests. Now about Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Hart investigating the wreckage of the SS Monte Carlo I can tell they will be a threat. I have not met the Harts, but I know of them. Clint, continue keeping a close eye on them. I know they won't be easily persuaded to check out. If Hart weren't such a genuine honest businessman we could resort to blackmail."

Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances. Jonathan whispers something into his wife's ear. Jennifer nods. They look around them and see the other painters are too busy painting to take notice of them. The Harts step down from the ladders quietly and stand by the side of the door out of view. They put their ears to the wall and continue eavesdropping.

"I think we need to kill them now," the man besides Vanderbilt says.

"I agree, Dexter!" the wife exclaims. "We are wasting time."

"I will make all the decisions. I called you men to the office to listen not for a conference," Vanderbilt replies annoyed.

"I am listening," Clint informs the man with a smile. "I know you are too, Jordan," Clint says turning to the bellhop.

"Yes, I am, Clint," he replies turning to him with a nod.

"I know you are. That is why I chose you three men to work along myself, my wife, and my associate," Vanderbilt replies cheerfully motioning to his wife and the other man behind him. "Listening is not one of their strengths or impressive characteristics."

Vanderbilt's wife shoots her husband an angry look.

Jennifer finds herself about to sneeze again. Jonathan happens to notice it and places his finger under her nose again.

"I can't afford to make any careless mistakes," Vanderbilt says as the discussion continues on in the office. "One wrong move this venture will collapse. No, we will have to carry on with this ghost act until another tactic is necessary."

"For how long, Dexter?" the wife asks impatiently. "I can never get a straight answer from you!"

"That is because I do not know, darling," Vanderbilt replies turning to her with a smile. "All in good time, all in good time," he says kissing her on the cheek. "I can guarantee you it will be in time before construction starts taking place. When we make even more money once this racetrack is built in place of the hotel all of us gathered here will be looking back on this with a different attitude. Patience and not acting in haste will work out in our best interest. I have  managed to be a successful and wealthy man because of my beliefs in patience and never  acting on impulse."

"I think you are a very clever man, Mr. Vanderbilt," Clint says impressed. "I just have a question if I may ask."

"Go ahead," Vanderbilt says turning to face him. "Just make it a good one."

"I was wondering with the Del Mar only thirty minutes away why you want to build another racetrack?"

"The Del Mar is going through financial troubles. It is going bankrupt."

"Yes, Mr. Vanderbilt was once a regular visitor to the Del Mar," the associate says. "He and the owner were good friends."

"Thanks to my influence I was able to find a way for the Del Mar to go under. I couldn't take a chance of there being a serious competition," Vanderbilt replies with self-satisfaction.

Jonathan and Jennifer walk back to their ladders and continue on as if they are painting.

"Now I know why the name Dexter Vanderbilt is familiar," Jonathan says in a whisper. "He owns a land development company here in San Diego."

"With the way he was talking I did not get the impression he is interested in tearing down the Del Coronado just so he can build his own home to enjoy the peaceful sounds of the ocean," Jennifer replies in a whisper. "Such a shame that he killed the manager and forced the Del Mar into bankruptcy!" Jennifer whispers back with disappointment. "You know something, darling?" she asks turning to him.

"What?" Jonathan asks as he stops painting and turning to look at her.

"It is corrupt land developers like Dexter Vanderbilt that give land developers a bad name," Jennifer remarks anger showing in her voice as a frown comes over her face.

"I love it when you show spunk!" Jonathan exclaims still keeping his voice down.

Jennifer smiles as they both continue on slowly and briskly painting the wall.

"Are you gonna talk or get the job done?" one of the other painters behind them asks turning around to face them.

"Oh, Joe here and I were just discussing our paint job, weren't we?" Jonathan asks in a deep voice in disguise again.

"Yep," Jennifer replies in a low deep male voice.

"Speaking of paint job why in the world don't you finish painting the other wall before starting on the wall over there?" the painter asks.

"Well, Joe and I have our own way of painting. Don't we, Joe?" Jonathan asks turning to her.

"Yep," Jennifer replies as she continues acting like she is painting.

"We like to start one wall before going to work on painting the other. We prefer to take shifts so to speak. We get dizzy staring at the same wall. We get dizzy spells doing that. Right, Joe?" Jonathan asks nudging Jennifer in the elbow. "I remember one time we were doing this job Joe and me nearly had to be rushed to the hospital. Whoa! What a day that was!" Jonathan says removing his cap. "I don't know about you guys, but I think it is hot in here!" he adds fanning himself with his cap. "Hot hot!" Jonathan says with a sigh taking out a scarf which he uses to wipe off his forehead.

"Yep!" Jennifer exclaims as Jonathan places his cap back on his head as they continue painting.

Meanwhile back inside the office the discussion is drawing to a close.

"That will be all for now. I am going to head back to my office," Vanderbilt says rising to his feet.

Jordan, Clint, and the bartender walk over to the door. Clint opens it.

"What on earth?!!" they exclaim speechless.

Jonathan and Jennifer have disappeared out of sight. All of their equipment are gone. All is left are the cans of paint. Vanderbilt, his wife, and his associate hurry over to see what has happened.

"The new painters are gone!" Clint exclaims in shock. "Hey, come back here! You are not finished yet!" Clint yells hurrying after them.

The other painters watch an outraged Clint run out of their sight. The other men exchange glances. Vanderbilt whispers something into his associate's ear.

By now Clint has reached the front entrance in time to see Jonathan and Jennifer speeding away from the hotel in a truck with all of the painting equipment piled into the back. Clint is yelling after them. Just as Jonathan makes a turn onto the road Jennifer begins taking off her cap, comb, and mustache. She picks up her purse from the floor in front of her and takes out a small bottle of perfume.

Hotel Del Coronado Later

Jonathan and Jennifer pull up to the front entrance of the hotel in their Mercedes sometime later that afternoon. They are wearing their own clothes again and have removed their disguises. The Harts get out of the vehicle just as the valet approaches. He greets them before getting into the driver's seat. The valet drives their car away to be parked. They walk into the lobby together holding hands. Clint is helping a couple check out when Jonathan and Jennifer approach the front desk. He looks up and sees them.

"Pardon me for a moment, please," he says to the couple. He turns around and picks up their key to the suite. "Here you go, Mr. and Mrs. Hart,"Clint tells them handing the key over to Jonathan.

"Thank you," Jonathan replies.

They start toward the elevator when they happen to glance over and see the walls that they barely finished painting. A sign that reads," Wet Paint," is standing by the corridor where the office is located. Jonathan smiles and nudges Jennifer gently. She grins before they return to a straight face. They walk back to the front desk. The couple is heading out of the hotel as Jonathan and Jennifer approach.

"What is going on?" Jonathan asks as he motions toward the office.

"Yes, looks like the painters ran out of fresh paint already," Jennifer comments.

"Oh, we had some nitwit painters in here early this afternoon. They couldn't do anything right. The other painters are going to finish the job," Clint replies with some annoyance in his voice.

"Well, good help is hard to find these days," Jonathan remarks. "I am sure the other painters will do a fine job."

"I can’t understand it. Those painters came highly recommended."

"One thing is for sure they are not going to be in business any longer if they can’t do their job satisfactory," Jennifer says. "They might be reported to the better business bureau."

"I am attempted to report them myself," Clint replies rolling his eyes as Jonathan and Jennifer walk away holding hands as before.

They barely manage to keep themselves from chuckling at their masquerade as they walk underneath the chandelier hanging in the lobby. All of a sudden they hear a noise from above them. They look up and see the elegant crystal chandelier has broken from its chain holding it above in the ceiling. It is about to come crashing down on them when Jonathan and Jennifer jump out of the way at exactly the right moment. The chandelier crashes on the ground breaking into pieces. Hotel staff scream at witnessing the crash. Clint jumps over the front desk. He hurries over to the Harts who are still in shock at almost being crushed to death by the chandelier.

"My God, are you all right?" Clint asks frantically as Jonathan helps Jennifer to her feet.

"Other than shaken up we are fine," Jonathan replies with a frown feeling like he could punch Clint out after almost being killed.

"I don’t understand how that could have happened!" Clint exclaims with shock looking at the destroyed chandelier.  "You are lucky! Another moment you and Mrs. Hart would have been crushed to death," he says.

"I think that is exactly what someone had in mind," Jennifer replies nervously as she picks up her purse which fell to the ground.

"My sincere apologies," Clint says turning to the Harts his face turned white by the incident. "Is there anything I can do?"

"Yes, you can investigate the cause of the crash and get the chandelier out of the lobby before the rest of the guests decide it is time to check out. If anymore unpleasant incidents occur my wife and I will be checking out. I think this latest experience gives us a good reason to expect a half price off on our hotel bill," Jonathan replies with anger in his voice as he turns to Clint. "In the meantime we would appreciate room service bringing us a bottle of Champagne with two glasses. We need it after getting ourselves almost killed."

"I think the Champagne should be on the house, darling, " Jennifer says with disappointment in her voice.

"Yes, it should, darling," Jonathan replies turning to his wife as he takes her hand. They walk onto the elevator which just made its stop at the lobby. Clint watches with worry as the door to the elevator close, and the Harts disappear out of his sight.

"That settles it, darling," Jonathan replies with anger which arouses the surprise of the elevator operator. "Romantic or no romantic getaway we are checking out first thing tomorrow morning," he says turning to his wife with a wink. Jennifer winks back.

"Yes, the Hotel Del Coronado has lost its appeal just now. We certainly can’t recommend it to people we know at this rate," Jennifer says with anger in her voice. "I think we should have checked into the Horton Grand Hotel in downtown. The Del Coronado makes the Horton look like pure paradise," she adds as the elevator stops at their floor.

"Third floor," the elevator operator replies with a smile as the door open.

Jonathan and Jennifer get out as the elevator operator looks after them with a smirk.

Hotel Del Coronado Soon After

Jonathan stands in the living area of their suite talking to an employee of Hart Industries over the telephone.

"Arnold, I need you to do some digging into Vanderbilt Land Development. It is owned by a wealthy businessman named Dexter Vanderbilt.  See if you can find out anything on him and his associates. I am particularly interested in finding out if Vanderbilt is planning to build a racetrack here in Coronado. Get back to me soon as you can find anything, will you? Thank you!" Jonathan says into the receiver before hanging it up.

Just then Jennifer walks into the room wearing nothing, but a robe and slippers. She has just finished taking a shower and drying her hair.

"Did you manage to get in touch with Arnold?" she asks walking over to him.

"I did. He is going to look into Vanderbilt and his company right away," Jonathan replies turning to face her. "Feeling better after your shower?"

"Yes, I could not stand smelling like paint any longer. Thank goodness I had some perfume in my purse to dab on after we disappeared from our job this afternoon."

"Darling, with your beauty one would be too busy noticing your good looks to detest any smell of paint," Jonathan replies with a smile.

"I think you are just trying to flatter me," Jennifer says with a smile.

"Is it working?"

"Your flattery always manages to work on me, darling," Jennifer replies with a wink as she kisses him on the lips. "Speaking of telephone calls I think you need to call the lieutenant right now and tell him about that chandelier that nearly landed on us."

"I was just going to dial his number when you walked in," Jonathan assures her.

The telephone rings. Jonathan picks up the receiver.

"Hello, Jonathan Hart," Jonathan says answering the call. "Lieutenant, my wife and I were just talking about you," he replies as he and Jennifer exchange glances. "The pistol that was used to kill the manager was his own pistol?  When did he purchase it? Several weeks ago? Lieutenant, I can see why you think this rules out our homicide theory, but before you decide to close the case you should know Jennifer and I were almost killed by a chandelier in the lobby only a short time ago. No, we were not hurt at all. Someone definitely went to lengths to see to it that we were not the only ones who met our demise at Hotel Del Coronado just recently. An accident? What do you mean an accident? How could a chandelier that has been in the lobby for years all of a sudden come crashing down like that? Do you think it is worth looking into? You might want to reconsider that you have more important cases on your desk right now because Jennifer and I may be on to something," Jonathan tells the officer in charge with disappointment and frustration. "Yes, I know it is a matter for the police to handle. Thank you.  I am sure Jennifer and I will enjoy our stay even more after almost being killed this afternoon," he says with some annoyance before hanging up the receiver.

"I cannot believe what I just heard," Jennifer says thunderstruck. "We almost got killed, and the lieutenant just expects us to sit back like it never happened. I wonder if Vanderbilt has him in his pocket as well. The law around here leaves much to be desired. Did he say anything about the bullet? Did it match with the pistol?"

"Yes, the bullet that killed the manager matched with the murder weapon," Jonathan replies picking up the receiver and dialing a number. "I wonder how Max will like investing in real-estate," he says.

Hart House

Max is standing outside the garage washing the Corniche. The telephone begins to ring inside the main house. Freeway rushes into the living room barking persistently as the telephone rings. After a few more moments he hurries out of the room and toward the door in the foyer. He scratches the door with his paws. He barks loudly trying to get Max's attention to alert him about the telephone.

"What could Freeway want?" Max asks with wonder as he turns off the hose.

Freeway continues to bark and scratch the door as the phone continues to ring.

"All right, Freeway, I'm comin'! Hold your horses!" Max exclaims as he walks toward the main house.

Meanwhile inside the house Freeway runs up to a table by a couch. He slowly manages to bend down to remove the receiver from the hook with his mouth.

"Hello? Max?" Jonathan asks on the other end of the line. "Hello? Freeway, is that you, boy? Are you answering the telephone again for your Uncle Max?"

Just then the front door opens, and Max walks into the foyer. He sees Freeway has the receiver in his mouth.

"Thanks, Freeway," Max replies. "I will take the call from the foyer," he says turning to the telephone on the table by the door. "Hart Residence," Max replies answering the call.

"Hello, Max," Jonathan replies on the other end of the line.

Freeway slowly places the receiver back on the hook with his mouth.

"Hey, Mr. H!" Max exclaims with a smile. "Sorry I took so long in answerin' the phone. I was outside the garage givin' the Corniche a wash."

"That is all right. The car needed a wash. Listen, Mrs. H and I need your help," Jonathan replies on the other end of the line.

"What's up? Does this have anythin' to do with the death at that resort you and Mrs. H are stayin' at? I had a feelin' I would be hearin' from you soon. It has been all over the news and in the papers."

Hotel Del Coronado

"Yes, it has to do with the death of the manager. Mrs. H and I have stumbled onto something. The police here have already accepted the death as suicide, but we know he was murdered. As always we are going to need to prove it. Arnold is looking into a land development company called Vanderbilt Land Development. It is run by a man named Dexter Vanderbilt. I think we need to work fast to catch Mr. Vanderbilt before Hotel Del Coronado is put out of business permanently," Jonathan replies from the telephone in the suite.

"Where do I fit into this?" Max asks on the other end of the line.

"You are about to become a very wealthy land developer. I want you to put in a personal call to Mr. Vanderbilt yourself saying you want in the action of constructing a racetrack here."

"But, Mr. H, I ain't got that kind of dough," Max replies confused.

"Max, you know that. I know that, but he won't know that. I am going to set up a dummy corporation in your name so if Vanderbilt or any of his associates decide to investigate your business it will look legitimate. I will get back to you when I made all of the arrangements."

"How is this gonna catch that guy?"

"If everything goes to plan Vanderbilt will begin to panic. Just maybe we will get lucky."

"In other words you want to turn the tables on this Vanderbilt."

"I could have not explained it any better myself, Max. I will talk to you later. Goodbye," Jonathan replies before hanging up the receiver.

Hart House

 Max hangs up the receiver.

"Dummy corporation? Ain't they illegal?" Max asks himself.  "What do I know? Oh, well, time to get back to washin' the car. Now, Freeway, this time I will leave the door open," he tells the dog looking down at him.

Freeway barks.

"Yes, I will give you a bath afterwards," Max replies as he opens the door. He heads out.

Hotel Del Coronado

Jonathan and Jennifer are sitting out on their balcony. Jonathan pours Champagne into their glasses that room service just delivered.

"Darling, there is just one thing I don’t understand. Why are you going to all of the trouble of setting up a dummy corporation when we do not even know everything about Vanderbilt's business just yet?" Jennifer asks.

"I have a feeling Dexter Vanderbilt has a dummy corporation set up himself," Jonathan replies placing the bottle of Champagne back into the ice bucket. "Something tells me this man is involved in other illegal real-estate dealings."

"What makes you so sure?"

"I heard Vanderbilt is a shrewd businessman. When he wants something he goes after it. Besides it is the only reason I can think of how he managed to invest so much money into a racetrack without Lawrence or the authorities' knowledge."

Hotel Del Coronado Later

Later that evening Jonathan and Jennifer are getting ready to leave their suite for a dinner out in San Diego when the telephone in their bedroom rings.  Jonathan has just put on his jacket while Jennifer is standing in front of the mirror putting on her earrings. He walks over to the table and picks up the receiver.

"Hello?" he answers. "Good evening, Arnold. What did you manage to find out?"

Hart Industries

Arnold, an employee of Hart Industries is seated behind his desk, overlooking information.

"Mr. Hart, I went over and over again looking for the information you wanted on Vanderbilt Land Development. Far as the eye can see that company and Vanderbilt are clean as a whistle. The only thing I managed to find out about Dexter Vanderbilt is he has been buying property all over the country for racetracks, casinos, country clubs. In every state where casinos are legal he owns several: Vegas, Nevada, Atlantic City, you name it. He is the owner of racetracks and country clubs in forty states. Good news is I found out Vanderbilt is planning on building a new racetrack right in Coronado. Construction starts in a matter of a few days. Now for the bad news. I could not find out where he is planning on building this racetrack.  There is no record of where the location is anywhere. Strange, isn't it? It is if he is planning on building the racetrack on a piece of land that someone already owns without their permission. I could not even manage to learn who is backing him up in this venture. Vanderbilt certainly lives up to his reputation of being shrewd, Mr. Hart," Arnold replies from his telephone in his office. "Are you thinking of going into real-estate for Hart Industries if I may ask?"

Hotel Del Coronado

"No, but I am thinking of setting up a dummy corporation for Max," Jonathan replies from the suite.

"But, Mr. Hart, dummy corporations are illegal, sir," Arnold says on the other end of the line stunned.

"They are not illegal if you are planning on using them just as a front to nail a crook and murderer," Jonathan says as Jennifer comes up next to him. "Now here is I want you to do, Arnold," he says before going into specific details.

An Office Building In Los Angeles

Max is dressed up in a high dollar and expensive suit.  He looks himself over in a mirror while he sits back in a wheelchair with a leg in a cast. A young lady in a nursing uniform is standing by his side.

"How do I look, Anita?" Max asks turning his wheelchair around to face her.

"Just like you won the lottery, Max," she replies with a smile.

"Thanks. I sure feel like I hit the jackpot tonight," Max says with a smile. "Bring me that lighter Mr. H got for me, will you?" he asks pulling out an expensive cigar from the pocket of his jacket.

"Yes, Max," Anita replies with a smile as she walks over to the desk. She picks up the lighter and lights Max's cigar for him.

"Thanks," Max tells her as he starts smoking his cigar. "Say, what are you doin' tomorrow night?" he asks as he takes the cigar out of his mouth.

"I am cooking dinner for my husband," Anita replies with a chuckle.

"Oh, sorry, I wasn't aware you are hitched. Do you have a sister? I was hopin' she and I could go to the track and check out this new joint that just opened up."

"No, I am an only child."

"Oh, well, we ain't all lucky to have a beautiful sister like yourself," Max replies with a shrug as the intercom buzzes on the desk.

He wheels himself over to the desk and presses a button on the intercom.

"Yeah?" he asks speaking into the machine.

"Mr. Vanderbilt and his associate are here, Mr. Hughes," a female voice answers.

"Oh, send him right in, sweetie," Max replies.

He wheels himself over to the back of the desk while Anita stands by. She grabs his arm and pretends to be checking his pulse. The door opens. Jonathan's old secretary, Deanne, walks in with Vanderbilt and his associate right behind him.

"Thank you, Deanne. That will be all unless you gentlemen want some coffee after your plane ride," Max says turning to face the men.

"No, thank you, Mr. Hughes. We had a drink on the plane," Vanderbilt replies coming over to the desk with his associate right behind him.

"That will be all then. Go on home. I will not be needin' you anymore tonight, sweetie," Max tells Deanne turning to face her.

"Thank you, Mr. Hughes. Goodnight," Deanne replies as she walks out shutting the door behind her.

"Thank you for flyin' over to LA. I would have come over myself if I had not been in such a rush and broke my leg like an old fool," Max says placing his cigar in an ashtray on the desk. "Sit down and makes yourselves at home."

"How did you break your leg, Mr. Hughes?" the associate asks taking a seat in a chair along with Vanderbilt.

"I broke it walkin' down an escalator. Would you care for a cigar?" Max asks picking up a box of cigars.

"No, thanks. I prefer we get right down to business so I can return to San Diego tonight. I have some business I need to take care of," Vanderbilt replies sitting straight up as he opens his briefcase.

"Mr. Hughes, you should not be smoking another cigar!" Anita exclaims annoyed. "You know what the doctor said," she says turning to face him with a look of disapproval as Max takes out another cigar from the cigar box.

"What are you? My mother or nurse?" Max asks looking at her with a look of annoyance as he lights the cigar. "Go on home and stay there until next spring," he says waving her off.

"Just please do not forget your medication. Doctor says you need to take it every couple of hours," Anita replies with a sigh as she picks up her nursing bag. She starts to head out of the room.

"Women! Nag, nag, nag!" Max exclaims with a sigh as he  places the lighter down on the desk and begins to smoke the cigar. "Nothin' like a good old cigar to calm my nerves," he says with a smirk as Anita slams the door walking out of the office.  "You married?" he asks Vanderbilt.

"Yes, I have been for many years," Vanderbilt replies taking out a map and some papers from his briefcase.

"I feel for you! I sometimes think women were put on this earth just to cause us men heartburn," Max says shaking his head in disbelief. "Ok, what have you got to show me?" he asks placing the cigar in the ashtray as Vanderbilt places the map and papers down on the desk.

"Perfect location for a racetrack!" Max exclaims with a smile pretending to be excited as he looks over the map. "I am glad I am gettin' in on the action before it was too late."

"Mr. Hughes, why are you just now coming to me on wanting to split the profits?"

"I ain't heard about it until I got word about it this evenin'," Max replies still looking over the map. "We sure are goin' to make a killin' buildin' a racetrack where the Del once stood. Very ingenious of you think' of purchasin' that land," he adds sounding impressed. "When is construction goin' to start?"

"In a few days," the associate tells him.

"How did you find out about the purchase? I have not told anyone outside my company," Vanderbilt says feeling a bit suspicious.

"Let's just say I like to keep an eye out for good investments. I have people workin' for me who have ways of findin' out company secrets," Max replies with a wink and devious smile. "Let us get down to business. We can chat away later, Vanderbilt."

"My wife will be joining us any minute. She likes to be with me on my business dealings. She is a sharp lady," Vanderbilt replies sitting back down.

"If she is anythin' like you she is as smart as paint," Max says picking up the cigar. He places it back in his mouth as he continues looking over the map. "Oh, I wish I had thought of this venture myself! I always did like gamblin' especially at racetracks. I spend a lot of my time there when I ain't busy with business here," Max says with a grin still looking over the map.

"You said you wanted to discuss business," Vanderbilt reminds him rising. He takes the map from Max.

"Oh, yeah! I am just so tickled pink about buildin' this track in Coronado!" Max exclaims taking a break from smoking his cigar.

Vanderbilt and his associate exchange glances wondering if Max was for real or was putting on an act.

Hotel Del Coronado

That night Jonathan and Jennifer are relaxing in the swimming pool outside the hotel. They have the pool to themselves.

"It is too good to be true," Jennifer says with contentment.

"What is, darling?" Jonathan asks.

"That we are finally enjoying our romantic getaway, darling."

"Yes, peace and quiet is heaven," Jonathan replies with a sigh of satisfaction.

"Jonathan, that wasn't what I was referring to," Jennifer says with a grin.

"I know. I just couldn't resist after all we have been through," Jonathan admits with a sly grin.

"Let's forget about all the distractions and focus on the reason you planned this stay," Jennifer says turning around and facing him.

"I only have one thing on my mind and that is making love to my wife," Jonathan replies with a smile as he turns around and faces her. He leans over and kisses her. They wrap their arm around each other's neck as they continue kissing.

"That is what I call a warm up," Jennifer says pulling out of the kiss.

"You just took the words right out of my mouth," Jonathan replies with a sly grin before locking her into another kiss.

They continue kissing with their arm still wrapped tight each other's neck. Jonathan and Jennifer have been kissing for only a few more minutes when all of a sudden fog starts to form. The fog starts to overwhelm them as it spreads out through the entire pool area. They pull out of the kiss as they find themselves reacting to the fog. They begin coughing as the fog is getting too much for them.

"It was too good to last," Jennifer says with disappointment.

"My sentiments exactly. Let's get out of here," Jonathan replies.

He has no sooner says those very last words when all of the remaining lights go off before they can get out of the pool. Jonathan and Jennifer are trapped inside the pool in total darkness! They continue coughing as the fog continues.

"I do not know what is in store for us, but we can't wait to find out," Jonathan says in between coughs. "We got to try to see if we can make our way back inside before we suffocate."

Before they can take any action to make their way out of their new predicament they found themselves in someone comes up to Jonathan. The unseen person attempts pushing him into the water to drown him.

"Jonathan!" Jennifer exclaims horrified.

Jennifer reaches over to stop the attacker from killing her husband. She is pushed aside. Jonathan manages to stop the attempt of being drowned holding a tight and steady grip around the attacker's neck.

"Let me go!" the attacker demands in a spooky and unsettling voice.

"I do not think you are in any position to make any demands with attempting to drown me! If you have any ideas about making my wife your next attempted victim forget it! You are a dead man!" Jonathan shouts losing his temper.

Jonathan and Jennifer find themselves losing strength as the fog is too much for them. They cannot stop coughing. Jonathan no longer has the strength to stop the assailant. He finds his hand falling into the water. The assailant is now coughing as well with the fog affecting him. Jonathan's eyelids slowly close as Jennifer looks on horrified.

"Jonathan!!!" Jennifer yells as the attacker smiles.

He reaches down to push Jonathan's head into the water when Jonathan's eyelids open straight up having faked unconsciousness. Just as the attacker leans down to shove Jonathan's head into the water Jonathan fights back knocking his head back against his assailant with all his strength and power. The attacker is caught off by surprise and finds himself about to fall. He manages to stop by grabbing hold of the railing. The attacker takes off fleeing away having been overpowered.

"Are you all right, darling?" Jonathan asks turning to his wife. He begins to help her out of the pool as they manage to make their way out.

"Yes, I am. I just need to get out of here before I suffocate," Jennifer replies coughing uncontrollably. "Two attempts on our lives twice is just too much," she adds as Jonathan holds onto his wife's hand.

They carefully make their way back to the inside of the hotel through the thick fog. They reach the door, and Jonathan holds it open for his wife.  The Harts walk into the hotel. They sigh in relief having managed to get out of the path of danger. Clint rushes over to them.

"Mr. and Mrs. Hart, what happened now?" he asks with panic in his voice.

"Well, first off while my wife and I were finally getting accustomed to enjoying ourselves when someone decided it was time to call it quits. Fog started forming out there. It was like being in London fog except it was worse. We almost suffocated," Jonathan informs the desk clerk with anger. "I know it is Halloween tonight, but that really is taking a Halloween prank too far. Second someone came up behind me and attempted to drown me."

A look of shock and alarm comes across Clint's face.

"Mr. and Mrs. Hart, I do not know what to say except I am sorry. I know that can’t change what happened, but I really do not know what to say," Clint replies struggling to respond to hearing about the fog and the attempt on their lives.

"I can just imagine you cannot," Jennifer replies with anger in her voice as she shoots Clint a cold stare.

"Is there anything I can do? Can I help you back to your suite?"

"No, thanks, but you can call the owner. I think he would be very much interested in knowing what has been happening over the last few days especially the death of the manager and the attempts on our lives," Jonathan tells the frightened desk clerk.

"I can't do that. The owner is out of the country on business. Mr. Lawrence cannot be reached."

"That certainly is an interesting coincidence!" Jonathan shouts back. "I am going to call the lieutenant in the morning to see what he has to say about this latest attempt on our lives."

"I will call the lieutenant myself and have him come out here first chance he gets," Clint replies.

"Thanks, but no thanks. I much rather call him and speak to him myself."

Jonathan and Jennifer shoot him a glare as they start to walk back to the lobby together holding hands.

 Hotel Del Coronado

A short time later in the bathroom Jennifer is drying her hair off with a towel after having finished taking a shower. She is wearing her silk pajamas and a robe. She walks into the bedroom. Jonathan is standing by the window looking at the moon. He is too wearing his silk pajamas and robe. Jennifer smiles and throws the towel onto the floor. She quietly walks up to Jonathan and places her hands over his eyes.

"Guess who," Jennifer whispers quietly with a devious grin.

"Well, the voice sounds familiar, but I can't quite place it. Oh, yes, you are my wife. I knew we know each other well, but I needed a moment to remember how," Jonathan says innocently with a smile.

Jennifer chuckles as she removes her hands.

"What were you thinking about? You looked like you were deep in thought," Jennifer replies as Jonathan turns around to face her.

"I am just wondering how I am ever going to make this up to you, darling," Jonathan says. "We can't even try to enjoy a romantic getaway without stumbling into a mystery and murder."

"You do not have to make it up to me, darling. Every moment we are together I feel like we are on a holiday," Jennifer replies with a warm smile as she kisses her husband on the lips. "Right now I feel like we are in another place apart from the world," she says as she wraps her arms around his waist.

"You truly are one of a kind," Jonathan says with a smile as he looks at her thinking how truly blessed he is to have Jennifer as his wife.

"I know," Jennifer replies with a sly grin. She and Jonathan burst out laughing. "You are a truly one of a kind yourself."

"I know," Jonathan says with a sly smile. "I have been told," he tells her with a wink.

"Come on. Let's crawl into bed."

"We will just as soon as the Champagne arrives."

"Again?" Jennifer asks in surprise as she looks up at him.

"After tonight I figured we could use another glass. Besides where else is the best place to drink Champagne?"

"True, you always do everything in style," Jennifer replies just as a knock comes at the door.

"Who is it?" Jonathan asks cautiously as he turns to the door.

"Room service, Mr. Hart," a male voice answers outside.

"Be right with you," Jonathan answers back as he walks over to the dresser to pick up his wallet. He takes out some cash before walking over to the door. He opens it.

A young man stands outside holding a tray with Champagne and two glasses.

"Shall I bring it in?" the man asks.

"No, thanks, I can manage," Jonathan replies as he places the cash into the pocket of the hotel employee's shirt. "Here is something for your generosity," he says with a smile before taking the tray.

The young man takes the cash out and looks at it.

"Eighty dollars?! Thank you, sir! If there is anything else you need just let me know," the young man replies with excitement at the generous tip Jonathan gave him.

"Thank you, but I do not think there is anything else my wife and I will need at this hour of the night," Jonathan replies with a warm smile. "Goodnight," he says as he shuts the door with his elbow. He turns around and faces Jennifer. "Voila! Champagne, madame, at your service!" Jonathan exclaims with a wide smile.

"Merci, Monsieur," Jennifer replies with a wide grin walking over to him as Jonathan places the tray down.

"Come on. Let's pour the Champagne in bed," Jonathan says handing her the glasses. He picks up the bottle of Champagne and the corkscrew.

They walk over to their bed. They sit down on the edge as Jonathan begins opening the bottle with the corkscrew. He opens the bottle as the Champagne starts to come pouring out. Jennifer manages to place the glasses in front of the bottle in time to prevent a mess. Jonathan begins pouring the Champagne into their glasses before placing the bottle on the table by their bed. They sip their Champagne with a smile.

"Let's continue where we left off in the pool," Jonathan tells Jennifer seductively taking their glasses which he sets down on the table.

"I have been waiting for you to say that," Jennifer replies seductively as they crawl into bed next to each other.

"If you thought my kisses were warming you up earlier it is going to get even more hot in here," Jonathan says leaning over her. He begins to kiss her on the lips passionately as Jennifer reaches over to turn off the lamp.

Several hours later Jonathan and Jennifer are sound asleep when Jennifer again hears footsteps coming from the corridor. She wakes up and sees a light out in the hall. Shadows of footsteps can be seen as someone is wondering the hall. Jennifer turns to Jonathan. She is about to call his name when he wakes up after being woken up by the sound.

"Come on. Let's go investigate. I want to see for myself the person posing as Kate Morgan," Jonathan says as he reaches over to his side of the bed to switch on the lamp.

They crawl out of bed. Jonathan and Jennifer put on their slippers before picking up their robe from a bedpost. They tiptoe toward the door. Jonathan slowly and quietly opens the door. They look out in the corridor. Just as the other night no one is around. The hallway is deserted. The footsteps continue. Only they are much louder now. Suddenly Jonathan and Jennifer see the woman posing as Kate. She walks toward them from the other side of the corridor. They watch as she heads down to Kate's old room. Her hat completely covers up her head concealing her face. Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances. Jonathan fixes the door so that they won't be locked out of their suite.

They quietly hurry down the hall chasing after the woman as she reaches the room. She places her hand on the doorknob pausing. Jonathan and Jennifer are catching up to her. The woman starts to open the door.  She slowly walks in and slams the door just as Jonathan and Jennifer reach the room. Jonathan tries to open the door, but it is locked and bolted from inside.

"GO AWAY!" they hear a female voice shout from inside the room in a spooky voice. "GO AWAY!"

Jonathan and Jennifer walk away. They start to head back to their suite.

"If we could only get inside the room we may be able to see how they are carrying out these  strange occurrences," Jonathan finally says turning to his wife as they reach their suite. They return to find their door shut. Jonathan tries turning the knob, but the door won't open.

"Now we can't even get into our suite," Jennifer says in frustration."I will go down to the lobby. I’ll ask the late night desk clerk for a key."

"Wait," Jonathan replies turning to his wife. "Stand back, darling. I want to try something first."

Jennifer stands back out of the way. Jonathan stands back for a few moments before throwing his body against the door as hard as he can. The door still won't budge. Jonathan then proceeds to try again when to surprise the door suddenly slowly opens.

"Now how do you explain that?" Jennifer asks in shock stunned that all of a sudden the door opened.

"The door must have been just jammed," Jonathan replies holding the door open for Jennifer.

They walk into the suite. Jennifer looks around stunned as Jonathan closes and locks the door.

"Now how could that have happened?" Jennifer asks flabbergasted. She noticed that some of the furniture and their belongings have been moved around.

Jonathan looks around stunned as well.

"I'll say this much their timing was precise," Jonathan comments as he continues to look around.

"At least they were tidy, darling," Jennifer replies in relief as she starts to head back to the bed.

"Almost anyway," Jonathan says as he notices something out of the corner of his eye.

Jennifer turns around and notices some writing on a mirror. Words have been marked down in lipstick: "LEAVE NOW!!!"

Jennifer walks over to the mirror and looks over the words. She happens to notice that her lipstick container is placed underneath the mirror. Jennifer picks it up and opens it. She sees that the lipstick is still in the container. Jennifer turns around and shows Jonathan.

"Well, at least my lipstick was finally returned to me," Jennifer comments as she and Jonathan exchange glances.

Meanwhile in Kate's room the woman posing as Kate takes off her hat.

"I do not care what you say. Tonight was my farewell performance," she insists losing her patience.

"It was.  Tonight is also Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Hart's final night in the Hotel Del Coronado," Mr. Vanderbilt replies with a devious smile as he sits across from her along with Clint, Jordan, the bartender, and his associate. "Tomorrow Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Hart will be put out of the way once and for all," he adds before turning to Clint, the bartender, and his associate. "I want you three men to dispose of them. I do not care how you do it. Just kill Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Hart in a way the police will never suspect murder."

Hotel Del Coronado The Following Morning

Jonathan and Jennifer are finishing up eating their breakfast on the balcony that room service delivered to their suite. They are dressed in their clothes.

"I sure hope Max found out something about Vanderbilt last night," Jennifer says as Jonathan pours her another cup of fresh coffee.

"I hope so too, darling," Jonathan replies placing the coffee pot down on the table. "Last night  was unsettling even for me. I can guarantee you one thing. Once this latest adventure is over I am going to see to it that we really have a romantic few days to ourselves. It will be some place where we can be alone just the two of us," Jonathan tells his wife with a smile.

"Where may that be, darling?" Jennifer asks eagerly with a smile.

The telephone in their bedroom rings.

"I have to answer the telephone," Jonathan says rising to his feet.

"You haven't answered my question," Jennifer replies following Jonathan into the room as he heads toward the telephone on a table.

"And I am not going to," Jonathan says with a devious smile as he picks up the receiver.

"You certainly are secretive when you want to be," Jennifer replies with a grin.

"Hello, Jonathan Hart," Jonathan says answering the telephone call.

"Good mornin', Mr. H," Max replies on the other end of the line.

"Max, did you manage to find out anything?"

"I did. Vanderbilt's wife sure loves to talk."

"Wait a minute. You got his wife to open up about her husband's business dealings?" Jonathan asks in surprise.

"Yeah, that dame could talk one's ear off. Her husband asked me to see to it that she got a swell dinner at some fancy restaurant. Vanderbilt rushed back to San Diego before they even bothered to eat. That wife of his certainly has expensive taste. I hope you don't mind, but I asked the waiter to charge it to you, Mr. H, when she got up to go to the powder room."

"The last thing on my mind is my charge account. What did she say?" Jonathan asks as Jennifer walks over and stand by his side.

"Vanderbilt may be financin' real-estate, but that man is a con artist and crook. He has a dummy corporation set up to cover his tracks. For years now he has been usin' it as a front as a land conservation organization. He buys up property to build casinos and all those other businesses Arnold told you about while tellin' folks he is preservin' the land. What a cheat!" Max exclaims in disgust. "By the way I called him last night and told him I wanted in on the crooked scheme. To be sure he didn't catch on I told him he better let me in on it or I was gonna start bleedin' him dry. He agreed without hesitation. I overheard him tell his associate to check me out. Good thing you thought of settin' up that dummy corporation for me, Mr. H."

"I had a feeling Vanderbilt was doing something like that. How does he get away with buying all these properties without people getting suspicious?"

"He comes up with some kind of bogus explanation on why they lost out to the good cause of preservin' the land. Of course waitin'  long enough before construction starts and payin'  off other land developers to back off on their purchases helps this crook get away with his illegal activities."

"Did you sign contracts?"

"Yeah, just like you asked me to. Kelly is gonna fax you 'em contracts this mornin' first thing when she gets to the office. I dropped them off at her place last night after I had the chauffeur drive Mrs. Vanderbilt to the airport."

"Max, you have a vacation coming up in a few weeks. You earned it," Jonathan replies impressed.

"Nah, just helpin' you and Mrs. H out like I always do, but I ain't gonna turn down a vacation. Send Mrs. H my regards. When are you gonna come on home?"

"We will be staying for a few more days. I want Jennifer and I to really have a few romantic days to ourselves. Good work," Jonathan replies in a cheerful manner hanging up the receiver. "Max sends his regards, darling," he says turning to face his wife. "Vanderbilt is cheating people out of money by making them think he is preserving the land."

"That is where the dummy corporation comes in," Jennifer concludes.

"Kelly is going to fax me those contracts first thing when she comes into the office," Jonathan replies picking up the receiver. "I think it is high time we call the lieutenant to tell him about Vanderbilt's crooked scheme," he says as he waits for his call to be answered. After waiting a few moments all he gets is a ringtone. "I think we need to pay him a personal visit instead. Clint is not answering from the lobby," Jonathan tells Jennifer as he places the receiver back on the hook.

"Just let me freshen up before we go," Jennifer says picking up her purse from the dresser.

"While you are doing that I am going to keep trying to get through to the front desk," Jonathan replies picking up the receiver as Jennifer takes out her makeup.

She starts applying makeup to her face as she stands in front of a mirror on the wall. Jonathan tries once more to get through the front desk on the phone. Once again all he gets on the other end of the receiver is a ringtone.  He eventually hangs up just as Jennifer is placing her makeup back in her purse.

"Clint is still not answering the telephone from the desk. I have a feeling something is up. Let's leave before we are worn out our welcome all together," Jonathan says with concern as Jennifer approaches him. She is carrying her purse.

He takes her hand. They walk toward the door. Jonathan opens the door when all of a sudden he is rendered unconscious by the bartender with a gun. He is standing out in the corridor with Clint and Vanderbilt's associate.

"Jonathan!" Jennifer exclaims in shock.

Before she can react the bartender knocks her out next with his gun. The men walk into the suite. Clint is carrying some rope. The associate shuts the door behind them.

"I'll tie their hands up," Clint says bending down over Jonathan. "Just stand by the door and be ready to wheel in the laundry baskets."

He turns Jonathan around and begins tying his hands behind his back with the rope as the other two men watch. Clint then walks over to Jennifer. He turns her around and ties her hands behind her back.

The bartender and the associate open the door. They walk into the hall to make sure no one is in sight. They wheel in the laundry baskets. The bartender shuts the door.

The bartender helps Clint lift Jonathan off of the floor. They carry him over to a laundry basket.  They carefully place him in the basket before throwing some sheets over him concealing his body so no one will know they have an unconscious person inside. The associate walks over and helps Clint lift Jennifer off of the floor. They carry her over to the other laundry basket carefully placing her in. Clint and the associate proceed to throw some sheets over her concealing her.

The bartender opens the door and makes sure the coast is clear out in the corridor. The corridor is deserted.

"All right, the coast is clear," he says standing in the doorway as he turns around facing the other men.

Clint and the associate wheel the laundry baskets out as the bartender stands out of their way. He shuts the door before locking it with a key. They proceed down the corridor to the elevator.

Meanwhile the telephone is ringing in the Harts' suite. It continues ringing.

Hart House

Max stands in the living room on the telephone as he continues hearing a ringtone tone on the other end of the receiver. After a few more moments a male voice comes over the other end of the line.

"I am sorry, sir, but Mr. Hart is not answering. He and Mrs. Hart must have left already," he replies.

"What do you mean they left already?" Max asks baffled worried something has happened to Jonathan and Jennifer, but trying not to panic just yet.

"They checked out," the man explains.

"Checked out? But Mr. and Mrs. H ain't checkin' out. There must be some mistake. Mr. H told me they would be stayin' for a few more days. What do you mean am I sure? I work for the guy. If he and Mrs. H were leavin' trust me I'd be the first to know about it. No, I ain't callin' you a liar. It just doesn't sound like them. No, thanks. You do not need to keep tryin'. Thanks anyhow," Max replies before hanging up the receiver. He hears a bark from down below. He looks down to see Freeway standing in front of him barking as he wags his tail. "Yeah, you ain't the only one, Freeway, who feels somethin' fishy is goin' on down there," Max says looking down at the dog. "I'll call the cops," he tells Freeway as he picks up the receiver.

Freeway barks as he sits up.

"Don't worry, pup. You and I are takin' a plane trip to San Diego just as soon as I speak to the cops down there," he says reassuringly as he waits for his call to be answered. "Say, what is the number for the police in San Diego?" Max asks information.

Hotel Del Coronado

Meanwhile Clint and Vanderbilt's associate are wheeling the laundry baskets down the stairs from the back entrance of the hotel. The bartender is opening the trunk to the back of a Honda. The laundry baskets are wheeled are over to the back of the vehicle. Clint and Vanderbilt's associate lift Jonathan and Jennifer out of the basket. They place them sideways in the trunk before the bartender shuts the door.  Jonathan and Jennifer's captors get into the front of the car and start to drive away from the hotel. A helpless Jonathan and Jennifer lie in the trunk still unconscious.

"We will drop their bodies into the ocean at the Coronado Bridge," the associate says to Clint from the driver's seat as they turn left onto Glorietta Boulevard. "The police will believe their deaths were suicides."

"Good plan.  The bridge is often used to commit suicide, and it is only five minutes away," Clint replies.

A few minutes later as the drive continues Jonathan and Jennifer are slowly regaining consciousness. They open their eyes and look around at their surroundings realizing what has happened to them after they were knocked out.

"Jonathan, I am beginning to suffocate," Jennifer says in a whisper as she struggles to breathe. "I hope there is something in this trunk you can use to untie us," she tells her husband with worry.

Jonathan slowly turns his head around and notices that luck is on their side as always when they find their lives in danger. There is a lug wrench behind them in the very back out of reach, but he is hopeful somehow he can manage to find a way to grab hold of it.

"Some criminals," Jonathan replies in a whisper turning his head back to look at his wife. "They took the spare tire out, but left the lug wrench."

"Oh, my! How dumb is that?" Jennifer asks in a whisper managing a slight smile.

Jonathan slowly and quietly turns his head around. He begins his attempt to get ahold of the wrench. Taking his time and with difficulty he starts to move his feet toward the wrench.

While Jonathan is attempting their escape Clint and Vanderbilt's associate are continuing heading toward the Coronado Bridge as they sit in silence. The associate turns left onto an avenue.

Back in the trunk Jonathan is still trying to grab hold of the lug wrench. His feet are getting closer to reaching the wrench.

"I almost got it," Jonathan tells his wife. "I am now suffocating myself."

Just as his feet reach the wrench the rope to his hands come loose. Jennifer,  who has turned her head around now to watch her husband, notices the rope came off.

"Darling, I hate to tell you this, but you are already untied," Jennifer says with a smile.

Jonathan looks around and sees the rope came lose: his hands now free.

"What did you do?" Jonathan asks stunned.

"I didn't do anything. Our captors must be inexperienced at kidnapping," Jennifer replies as  Jonathan removes the rope from her hands.

Clint and the driver are almost to the Coronado Bridge. The associate turns right onto a street. He proceeds to drive before merging onto the highway. Halfway to the bridge they hear and feel a thumb followed by a vibration. Now a loud flapping sound is heard. The associate holds a firm grip on the wheel and slows the car down gradually. He pulls the vehicle over to the side of the road once at a safe speed before bringing it to a stop.

"What happened?" Clint asks turning to Vanderbilt's associate.

The associate looks out the window and sees the back tire is flat. He sighs before turning to Clint.

"We have a flat," the associate replies impatiently with a sigh. "There is a spare tire in the backseat. You get it while I go remove the lug wrench from the trunk," he says opening the door.

Clint nods in agreement as he opens his door. They get out of the automobile. Clint opens the door to the backseat and reaches for the spare tire. Just as the associate starts toward the trunk the trunk pops open. Jonathan and Jennifer hurry out. The associate stops in shock at Jonathan and Jennifer managing to escape.  Jonathan and Jennifer take off running.

"GET THEM!!!" the associate yells to Clint fuming.

Clint drops the tire and takes off after the Harts along with the other man.

Jonathan and Jennifer are hurrying in the direction of the bridge as they run on the side of the highway to avoid from becoming victims of a hit and run. A few more moments later they reach the Colorado Bridge. The men are catching up to them.

"Darling, I am going to have to stop. I can’t run anymore in these high heels," Jennifer says stoping to catch her breath.

Jonathan looks behind and sees their captors are getting closer. He quickly lifts his wife off of her feet and throws her over his shoulder carrying her.  He continues running for their lives.

The associate stops running. He starts to aim at Jonathan and Jennifer with his gun. Clint is in shock and nudges him in the stomach.

“You can't shoot them here! There are too many people around! And then you wonder why Vanderbilt didn’t trust you to kill the Harts alone after failing to drown them!” Clint exclaims.

“They are getting away!” the associate exclaims in a panic turning to face Clint.

“That is why we were chasing them before you took out that weapon! Come on! We can still catch them!” Clint exclaims taking off on foot with the associate right behind him. “They can't get far on foot!” he insists.

Jonathan continues running over the bridge carrying Jennifer over his shoulder. Jonathan  slows down a bit having to carry her. He is breathing heavily. Nevertheless he persists to run fast as he can. Clint and the associate are starting to catch up to Jonathan and Jennifer. Jonathan hears their footsteps. He heaves a sigh as sweat starts to pour from his forehead. He is exhausted from the heat and the running.

"Darling, you are going to have to take off your high heels. I can't carry you any longer," Jonathan says between breaths as he lifts Jennifer off his shoulder gently.

He places her down. Jennifer quickly takes off her shoes. Jonathan takes her by the hand, and they continue to run. Jonathan manages to run fast as his feet will allow. They are starting to get ahead of Clint and the associate.

Clint and the associate begin to run faster determined to catch up to Jonathan and Jennifer before they escape. The associate is fuming that they managed to get loose.

By now all of the vehicles on the bridge are honking their horns at Jonathan and Jennifer as they pass them.

"Do you suppose we could get a lift?" Jennifer asks sarcastically as the horns continue.

"No, unless a taxi comes by," Jonathan replies.

Finally the horns come to a stop. Jonathan and Jennifer are reaching the edge of the bridge. Sweat starts to pour down Jennifer's forehead. She and her husband are both sweating from the hot sun.

Eventually they reach Coronado Bridge Viewpoint which is located underneath the bridge. A young woman stands across the bridge taking photographs with her camera.  Jonathan and Jennifer approach her. Jennifer happens to glance over and sees the woman.

"Here you go, high dollar stilettos for free!" Jennifer shouts out to her dropping the shoes over the bridge directly near where the tourist is standing.

The high heels fall over the bridge knocking the camera out of the woman's hand just as she was about to jump out of the way. The camera smashes to pieces.

Jonathan and Jennifer have just about reached the edge of the bridge when Jonathan stops running.

"Jonathan, why did you stop?" Jennifer asks in frustration.

"My shoe is stuck in some bubblegum," Jonathan replies as he lifts up his shoe showing the bubblegum that is stuck onto his shoe.

He looks down and tries to get his shoe loose. Jennifer looks up and notices to her horror that a truck is coming their way.

"Darling, now is not a good time to be worrying about your shoe. There is a truck coming, and it doesn't look like it is going to stop," Jennifer says nervously.

Jonathan looks up and sees the truck is just about to come upon them as he continues to try  to get his shoe loose. He succeeds just as the truck blazes its horn loudly warning them to get out of its way. Jonathan pulls his wife's hand tightly. They dash out of the path of the truck just in time to avoid being struck down. Jonathan and Jennifer sigh in relief at getting out of the path of danger.

"Hey, do you need a lift?" a moving truck driver asks them shouting out his window as he brings the truck to a stop.

"Yes, we do, please!" Jonathan exclaims as he and Jennifer hurry over.

"Sorry I ain't got no room in the front. You'll have to sit in the back of the truck," the driver replies as he steps out of the vehicle.

Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances as they follow the driver to the back. He pulls the door up.

"Make yourselves comfortable," he says with a smile as he heads back to the front of his vehicle.

Jonathan and Jennifer step into the back of the truck. They manage to find two chairs side by side among all the other furniture and boxes piled into the back. The truck starts to take off at full speed. Jonathan and Jennifer grab hold of the arms of the chairs to steady themselves. The driver is driving very fast, but not over the speed limit. Some of the boxes stacked up on top come crashing down. The Harts are forced to hold onto their seats with their hands.

"If this is supposed to be comfortable maybe we should see about asking the driver to drop us off at the nearest taxi," Jennifer says turning to face her husband. A telephone falls off a piece of furniture which lands in her lap.

"If there was a socket you could call one now," Jonathan replies with a smile.

By now Clint and the associate have reached the edge of the bridge. They see Jonathan and Jennifer disappear out of their sight. The Harts are too far away to attempt to catch up to them. Clint and the associate sigh in frustration.

Eight minutes later the truck comes to a stop in front of a ship called Star of India. The ship is docked at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances as they are wondering why they came to a stop here.

"Sorry, but you will have to get out here," the driver explains as he walks to the back of his truck. "This is far as I go," he tells them as Jonathan and Jennifer step out. The driver pulls the door down.

"Wait a minute. I wonder if we could trouble you to make a stop at the police station," Jonathan says as the man returns to the front of his truck. He and Jennifer are standing in the parking lot.

The driver, not having heard what Jonathan said, opens his door and gets into his seat.  The driver takes off leaving Jonathan and Jennifer stranded.

"Well, let's see if we can get us a taxi to the police station ourselves, darling," Jonathan says turning to his wife.

Just then a trolley is coming their way. Clint and the associate are standing in the back when they notice Jonathan and Jennifer. Jennifer happens to glance over and notices them at the same time.

"Jonathan!" Jennifer exclaims in a panic pointing to the trolley that is almost approaching them.

Jonathan notices their captors. He grabs Jennifer's hand, and they take off toward the ship. The trolley comes to a stop. Clint and the associate rush to get off the trolley before the rest of the passengers have a chance to move.

Jonathan and Jennifer are making their way toward Star of India when the ticket seller notices them.

"Wait a minute! You need to buy tickets before you can tour Star of India!" he shouts out to them from the ticket counter to get their attention.

They hurry over to get their tickets. Jonathan pays for the tickets, and the seller hands them their tickets.

"Enjoy your tour!" he exclaims with a warm smile as Jonathan and Jennifer hurry over to the ship to seek refuge from Clint and Vanderbilt's associate.

Jonathan and Jennifer hurry up the ramp to Star of India.

Clint and the associate run after the Harts. They too are stopped by the ticket seller. The captors hurry over to the ticket counter and pay for their tickets.

"Enjoy your tour!" the seller shouts out to them bewildered why they are in such a hurry.

Clint and the associate rush up to the ship and run up the ramp.

Jonathan and Jennifer are running toward the bow with the men close behind.

"Jonathan, they are catching up!" Jennifer warns her husband.

They stop running. Jonathan looks behind and looks in front of them trying to decide where they should run to. Jonathan decides below deck. They take off running toward below with Clint and his partner in crime behind them.

Jonathan and Jennifer enter below deck with the men still close behind. The associate takes out his gun which he aims at Jonathan and Jennifer. They roll out of the way to avoid being shot.  The associate is about to fire another shot at them when Clint takes out a gun and aims it at the other man.

"Drop it!" he orders with a stern voice much to the surprise of the other man and the Harts. "I am undercover. I have connections with the police so it may be in your best interest to surrender," he says with a smile.

"Let me guess," Jennifer replies as she and Jonathan rise up to their feet. "You are with the CIA," she says in shock as she and her husband walk over.

Clint still has his gun pointed at the associate. He is still dumbfounded at this twisted turn of events.

"No, Mrs. Hart," Clint says with a smile as the associate drops the gun to the ground. "Try again," he says.

"FBI?" Jonathan asks.

"No, guess again," Clint replies.

"Interpol?" Jennifer asks.

"No," Clint says with a chuckle. He turns to face them as Jonathan and Jennifer reach him. "I am a private investigator."

"PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR?!!!" Jonathan and Jennifer both ask at the same time stunned as Clint reaches into his back pocket.

"Yes, I am a P. I. like James Rockford on The Rockford Files or Thomas Magnum on Magnum, P.I.," he replies as he takes out his credentials which he shows to the Harts. "I am sorry I misled you to think I was involved in the crooked scheme, but the manager asked me not to reveal my cover under any circumstances unless it was absolutely necessary. I didn’t know Vanderbilt's associate here was asked to drown you. I was kept in the dark about the attempts on your lives."

"No, you do not need to apologize. Like you said you did not know, Clint," Jonathan says shaking the man's hand.

"How long have you been on the case?" Jennifer asks as Clint places his credentials back into his pocket.

"I have been on the case along with Jordan and the elevator operator two weeks after Vanderbilt decided to scare off the guests.  Jordan is a cop who happens to be my brother."

"And the elevator operator your cousin?" Jonathan asks. "Or nephew?"

"No, he is my second brother. The manager figured something was going on so he contacted the police. They got involved right before I was put on the case. Vanderbilt had shown up once before the day you and your wife arrived. He wanted to buy the hotel, but he never revealed why."

"The manager found out what Vanderbilt was up to, but before he could contact Larry Lawrence he was killed," Jennifer concludes.

"Right," Clint replies.

"Look out!" Jonathan exclaims as he sees the associate is about to knock Clint out with a metal pipe.

Before Clint can react he is knocked unconscious. The associate picks up his gun. He takes Clint's gun which he aims at Jonathan and Jennifer.

"You know too much, Mr. and Mrs. Hart!" the associate exclaims with anger. "Now I will have to kill both of you! Get up back on deck and remember I have a gun pointed at your back. I will shoot you here and now if you try to outsmart me. Let's act like tourists who just enjoyed exploring this ship while we head on our way back to the bridge," he says in a firm and demanding tone. He places the gun in his pocket with his hand still pointing the weapon at their back.

Jonathan and Jennifer casually start to head out with the associate right behind them. They come upon a long workbench.

"Look at that," Jonathan says admiring the tools as he stops walking.

"What are you doing?" the associate asks in frustration.

Jonathan turns around and hits him across the face with his fist with all his strength before he can react. He falls to floor after losing his balance.

Jonathan grabs a pulley hoist and chain. He swings at their enemy as he walks toward them.

The guy stumbles as Jonathan tries to grab hold of the guns. Jonathan and the associate struggle. They fall backwards over a rail into a fenced cage.

Jennifer rushes to grab a large bucket and throws it over the bad guy's head. She starts banging it on with a big wrench.

"STOP!!!" the associate yells as Jennifer helps Jonathan out of the cage.

"Thank you, darling," Jonathan says kissing her on the lips. "Let's get out of here!" he exclaims taking her hand. They rush up to the ladder to the main deck.

They reach the deck, and they see Vanderbilt and the bartender boarding the ship.

"Oh, no! Not again!" Jennifer exclaims in disbelief as she and Jonathan exchange glances.

Vanderbilt and the bartender notice them. They come rushing toward Jonathan and Jennifer who are looking for a way to fight off the other opponents.

"Come on," Jonathan says motioning to the mast.

They climb up the ropes to the sails.

"We will hold them off in the crow's nest," he tells his wife.

Vanderbilt and the bartender are walking around Star of India looking around for the Harts unaware of they are hiding over them. Vanderbilt sees them. He starts to climb up the rope to the sails.

Jonathan and Jennifer see Vanderbilt is coming towards them. Just at that moment Clint comes up to the deck with the associate in front of him. Clint has the guns aimed at him. Vanderbilt notices that Clint is holding his associate against his will. He takes out his gun which he aims at Clint.

Just then Jonathan jumps down from where he and Jennifer are hiding out in the sails. He lands on Vanderbilt. They fall to the ground and wrestle fighting for the gun. Jennifer takes a rope and swings down toward the bartender who is about to take a shot at Clint. She knocks the bartender overboard just as he was going to pull the trigger.

Meanwhile Jonathan is still fighting for control of the weapon with Vanderbilt who is determined to overpower him. Jennifer sees her husband still fighting and takes a gun from Clint's hand. She walks over to where Jonathan and Vanderbilt are wrestling around on the ground.

"Jonathan!" Jennifer exclaims as she shows him she has a gun in her hand.

He looks up and reaches his hand out for the gun. Jennifer throws the gun toward Jonathan's hand. He manages to grab the gun. Jonathan aims the gun at Vanderbilt.

"Give it up!" Jonathan orders. "My wife managed to get the bartender to take a swim. Do you want to join him?" he asks as he rises to his feet.

Vanderbilt shoots him a cold stare and drops the gun. Jennifer smiles and walks over to Jonathan.

"Are you all right, darling?"

"I am fine," Jonathan replies. "Thanks for throwing me the gun," he says turning to her with a smile.

Vanderbilt throws a hard punch at Jonathan with his fist knocking him off of his feet. Jonathan falls to the ground and is knocked out by the fall. Jennifer is stunned at what has happened. She gasps as she places her hand over her mouth in shock.  She looks at Jonathan lying motionless on the ground just as Vanderbilt points a gun straight at her back. The other gun is pointed at Jonathan's head.

"Come with me or I will shoot him dead, Mrs. Hart!" Vanderbilt shouts out losing his temper. "Move it!" he orders as he pushes a nervous and frightened Jennifer toward the bow of the ship.

Clint is in shock that Vanderbilt had won the fight and has Jennifer held hostage.

"Are you hurt?" he asks with concern as Jennifer is forced to approach him with Vanderbilt behind her.

Jennifer shakes her head. Vanderbilt aims a gun at Clint with the other one still pointed behind her back.

"Let my associate go or I will shoot Mrs. Hart right now!" Vanderbilt orders his temper getting the best of him.

Clint sighs as he reluctantly drops the gun. The associate walks over to Vanderbilt.

"Now hand me the gun."

Clint reaches down and hands him the gun.

"Now I want you and Mrs. Hart to go to the stern right now!" he orders calmly.

Jennifer and Clint reluctantly walk to the back of Star Of India with Vanderbilt and his associate leading the way. They pass a still unconscious Jonathan on their way.

"Stand behind the helm and do not move! Keep your hands behind your back!" Vanderbilt exclaims as his associate looks on with a smirk.

Jennifer and Clint come up to the helm directly facing the stern of the ship. They turn around and stand behind placing their hands behind their back. Vanderbilt smiles with a devious smile thinking he has won as he continues to hold Jennifer and Clint at gunpoint.

Jonathan slowly opens his eyes regaining consciousness. He lifts himself to his feet and looks around for Jennifer. He walks toward the bow. Finding no one there he hurries quietly over toward the stern fearing for his wife's life. Jonathan comes near the back of the ship and sees that Vanderbilt has Jennifer and Clint held at gunpoint.

Jonathan glances around desperate to come to his wife's rescue. He sees one of the ropes hanging down from the mast. He climbs up to the mast and grabs the rope. Like in the movies he swings down toward Vanderbilt. Jennifer sees her husband coming to her rescue, but keeps a straight and serious face. Vanderbilt is about to pull the trigger when Jonathan knocks him  overboard with his feet holding onto the rope.

"My hero!" Jennifer exclaims with a smile as Jonathan jumps down letting go of the rope.

"We are both heroes, darling," Jonathan replies with a smile embracing her locking her into a passionate and loving kiss.

Vanderbilt is screaming his head off fuming and annoyed that he had been kicked into the water.

"I should have been paying attention!" Vanderbilt yells his face turning red as Jonathan and Jennifer look on.

"Well, no one is perfect," Jonathan replies with a smile as he and Jennifer place an arm around each other's shoulder.

They burst out laughing at Jonathan quoting the famous line from Some Like It Hot as a response.

Hotel Del Coronado

Jonathan and Jennifer are preparing to leave the hotel. Jonathan sits at a table on the telephone while Jennifer is handing a bellhop their luggage. She gives him a generous tip.

"We will be down in a few moments," Jennifer says.

"Very well, Mrs. Hart. There isn't any rush," he replies with a smile as he walks out of the suite carrying the luggage.

"Yes, I want the yacht to be in ship-ship shape. Have the coastguard contact me if there are any icebergs around," Jonathan says into the receiver imitating Cary Grant.

Jennifer rolls her eyes. She turns around and looks at Jonathan while standing in the doorway.

"Are you ready to go, Mr. Grant?" Jennifer asks a bit impatiently.

"And set up a nice romantic dinner for two. Don't forget the Champagne, pheasant, and cranberries," Jonathan continues. "You and the rest of the crew can have the day off. Cheerio," he says before hanging up the receiver. "I'm sorry, darling, but last minute business I had to attend to," Jonathan says rising as he still is imitating Cary. He walks over to her and takes her hand. They walk out shutting the door behind them.  They start to walk down the corridor to the elevator. "I checked the stock market. It is up up."

"Do not continue on with that imitation again. We're leaving," Jennifer replies with a sigh.

"What imitation?"

"Jonathan!" Jennifer exclaims as they pass a couple. They reach the elevator.

"Good day to you," Jonathan says turning to the couple with a smile.

"Jonathan, you are embarrassing me! Let's not continue on with that act all the way home."

"What act? I do not have any idea what you're talking about," Jonathan says as they wait for the elevator.

"Jonathan!" Jennifer exclaims turning to him giving a look of annoyance.

The elevator opens, and the Harts walk on.

"First floor, please," Jonathan says to the elevator operator still in his Cary Grant accent.

The elevator operator nods as Jennifer gives her husband a stare.

"Are you through having your fun for the day?" Jennifer asks as the door close.

Soon after Jonathan and Jennifer walk out of the hotel. Max is waiting in the Corniche with Freeway in the passenger seat.

"Did you give the valet a good tip?" Jonathan asks returning to his normal voice as he turns to Max. He is helping Jennifer into the backseat.

"Yeah, Mr. H. I gave him a quarter," Max replies as Jonathan and Jennifer exchange a look.

"Max, fifty cents is not considered a generous tip," Jennifer tells him as the Corniche starts to drive away from the Del.

"Oh, well, fifty cents is better than nothin'," Max replies.

Shortly after Jonathan, Jennifer, and Max are turning left onto Rendova Road.

"Darling, this doesn't look like the way back to Los Angeles," Jennifer says wondering what is going on.

"Just sit back and enjoy the ride, darling," Jonathan replies in a cheerful manner.

Minutes later the Corniche approaches the San Diego Harbor. Max brings the vehicle to a stop at the side of the road. Jonathan helps his wife out of the car and shuts the door. Jennifer looks around still not quite sure what Jonathan is up to. Max is getting their luggage out of the trunk as Freeway sits up in the passenger seat. Jonathan takes Jennifer by the hand and leads her down to the dock where all of the boats are moored. A yacht is coming towards them just as they reach the harbor. Jonathan waves to the yacht. The captain waves back just as he sounds the horn three times.

"There's your yacht," Jonathan says turning to Jennifer with a smile dying for his wife's reaction. "Now we can react the scene in style," he adds as he gestures toward the yacht. "It was the captain I was talking to in our suite. We are going to even have a full moon tonight."

Jennifer smiles overwhelmed at the surprise of Jonathan going to the expense of getting them a yacht. She watches with anticipation as the yacht comes to a stop in front of them. The anchor is dropped. Jonathan and Jennifer walk up to the yacht holding hands. They board the vessel. The captain walks toward them carrying a basket of flowers.

"Here you go, Mrs. Hart," the captain says handing Jennifer the basket of flowers. "Will there be anything else, Mr. Hart?" he asks turning to Jonathan.

"No, that will be all. Thank you," Jonathan tells the captain with a smile.

The captain salutes Jonathan before walking away leaving the Harts alone.

"I thought since we are going to react the scene on the yacht we might as well go all out."

Jennifer is deeply moved as she admires the flowers.

"Thank you, darling," Jennifer replies turning to her husband giving him a kiss on the lips. "You do have a flair for perfection."

Just then Max comes up behind them carrying their luggage.

"Just place the luggage down. I'll carry our suitcases to our cabin after we get settled," Jonathan says looking at Jennifer with a sly smile.

"Right," Max replies placing their suitcases down. "Smooth sailin', Mr. and Mrs. H," he says with a smile as he looks at them for a moment. He walks away.

Jonathan and Jennifer walk toward a cabin still holding hands.

"I wonder where the steward set up our dinner for tonight," Jonathan says imitating Cary Grant again. "I always get lost on Thursdays."

"Jonathan, do not start that again!" Jennifer exclaims with a sigh.

"Start what, my dearest darling?" Jonathan asks innocently as they walk into their cabin.

"Jonathan!!" Jennifer exclaims annoyed giving him that stare again.

"Bon voyage, darling," Jonathan replies in his normal voice with a smile. They turn to face each other. He places his hands around her neck.

"Bon voyage," Jennifer says with a smile as she shoots him a wink.

The history of Del Coronado was really interesting. This episode had murder, suspense, romance, comedy, and action just like the TV show. You are a natural Sara.

I was so laughing at the Harts little stunt where they posed as painters. And I actually thought Clint was involved in this mess until it was revealed he was an undercover police officer. That was a big shock, and kind of a surprise. It was weird how Clint just kept popping up everywhere they were though.

I knew the psychologist Dexter Vanderbilt and his wife were fishy. She was playing the role of Kate Morgan so well, and everything. She probably was in character when the Harts saw their little argument at the end of the day.

I’m amazed even in danger that Jonathan and Jennifer Hart still have time to enjoy each other’s company and have time to be romantic with each other. LOL, Jonathan’s Cary Grant impression was hilarious! And Jennifer kept getting annoyed by it. They always have the most fun with each other. What a couple.

The first scene was hilarious where Jennifer Hart couldn’t make up her mind about the furniture. I was like Poor Max! Jennifer couldn’t make up her mind and Max had to keep moving furniture. And Max said under his breath, my daddy was right, women just can’t make up their minds. Just so true!

I loved the stunt Jonathan, Jennifer, and Max tried to pull on Dexter Vanderbilt, and that dummy corporation. I thought Max was going to pull it off but thank god Jonathan helped Max cover his tracks. And Vanderbilt did the same thing as well. I mean if he was clean as a whistle, then that had to mean this guy went to great lengths to cover his tracks.

Then in the process he tried hitting on Anita. I always thought Max was a charmer when it comes to women at the end of the day.

I love that scene where that beautiful young woman told Jonathan that he was such a handsome man, he says think you, what don’t you ask my wife LOL????. Then she says to Jennifer, you have a very handsome husband, she says to her, Jennifer says thank you and I intend to keep him as if to say hands off my husband woman.

@DerekMathews Thank you so much for always leaving feedback!!! That means a lot to me. I wish all my readers got into my episodes and left comments!!! Just want to clear up the confusion. Dexter Vanderbilt and his wife were not the couple having an argument. The couple were much older than Vanderbilt and his wife. They actually were guests who happened to be leaving just after the Harts checked in.

Wonderful! My very favorite of all your stories. This would have been a GREAT plot for a Hart To Hart episode.
I love when Jonathan does his Cary Grant impersonation. I also LUV that you had Jonathan and Jennifer holding hands and loving on each other. I like it when they show affection for each other by holding hands and him putting his arm around her. Your dialogue was true to the characters as usual. Sara, YOU are the master of verbal communication. Your dialogues are perfectly true to the characters. I can actually visualize Lionel, Stefanie, and Robert talking as I read their dialogue.
Very good job Sara. Can't wait for your next story. Janet

Excellent!! Loved the this episode immensely. I truly felt like I was watching the show. You have a real knack for believability when you write. Thanks for keeping these characters alive!
