Hart House Night
Jonathan and Jennifer are sitting at the table on the patio. They have just finished eating their dinner which Max cooked for them. He is picking up their plates.
"What a delicious dinner, Max!" Jonathan exclaims as he wipes off his chin with a napkin.
"Yes, you outdid yourself. As the French would say it was, "superbe," Jennifer says with a smile as she places her napkin on the table.
"Thank you!" Max replies with a smile grateful the Harts were impressed by his cooking.
"That must be some chef you are taking classes from, Max. Your cooking skills are improving."
"I'll say," Jonathan replies as he and Jennifer pick up their glass of wine. "It was like eating at a four-star restaurant."
"It should. Pauline Simone is my teacher," Max says with a sly smile.
"You've been taking cooking lessons from Pauline Simone?" Jennifer asks stunned as she sits up straight.
"Yes, that dame cooks just as good as Julia Child."
"You've never met Julia Child or tasted any of her meals," Jonathan points out.
"No, but they both are chefs who have their own show on TV so naturally Pauline must cook just as good as that Child lady."
"Do you think she would be willing to give Jennifer some lessons?" Jonathan asks teasingly.
"Jonathan!" Jennifer exclaims giving him a stare annoyed. "How would you like to sleep on the couch tonight?"
"What's for dessert?" Jonathan asks turning to Max ignoring his wife's reaction.
"It's a surprise, Mr. H. I can guarantee you and Mrs. H will love it."
"Speaking of surprises have you gone shopping for my birthday present yet, darling?" Jennifer asks as she places her glass down.
"We'll have coffee in the living room afterward," Jonathan says looking at Max.
"Right, Mr. H," Max nods as he walks into the kitchen carrying the plates with him.
"Jonathan, are you trying to get me mad?" Jennifer asks frustrated.
"No, darling. I just do not want to ruin the surprise," Jonathan replies turning to her.
"I wasn't going to ask what my gift is. I just wanted to know if you bought it yet."
"No, I am going shopping tomorrow. I've been thinking of what to buy you. How about a cookbook?" Jonathan asks teasingly.
"How about you stop making remarks about my cooking before I throw Max's dessert on you?" Jennifer asks with a sly grin managing to control herself. She throws Jonathan her napkin which he manages to catch with a smile.
Max returns with upside-down cake sliced into half a piece on each plate. He places one plate in front of Jonathan and the other in front of Jennifer.
"Upside- down cake," Max says. "Oh, you'll be glad to know there are only 90 calories in this cake," he adds turning to Jennifer.
"I am relieved to know that, Max, but since you went to all of this trouble I don't think it will hurt Jonathan and me to eat a slice," Jennifer replies with a smile as she and Jonathan pick up their fork.
"Let me know how it turned out. If it is any good I am goin' to cook this here upside-down cake for Katherine. She just returned from Europe. I thought she would like to sample my cookin'."
Jonathan and Jennifer cut up a piece before putting it into their mouth. Jonathan and Jennifer barely manage to keep themselves from showing a look on their face.
"What's wrong?" Max asks with disappointment.
"I do not know how to tell you this, but it is too-" Jennifer begins as she places her fork down.
"Dry," Jonathan finishes what Jennifer was going to say as he too puts his fork down.
"Oh, well, I guess it's like they say, "if at first you don't succeed try try again," Max replies with a shrug as he picks up their plates. "I'll start brewin' the coffee," he says as he heads back into the kitchen.
Jonathan and Jennifer rise up from the table. Jonathan places his arm around Jennifer. She places her arm around him as they walk into the house.
Max is in the kitchen washing the dishes a little while later when the door to the room opens. Jonathan walks in.
"Max," Jonathan says as he walks over to him. "I want to talk to you about Jennifer's birthday present. Has she given you any hints about what she would like? She has just about everything in the world a woman would want so I can't think of anything that would be unique."
"An answerin' machine," Max replies as he turns off the faucet and turns around to face him.
"I have to admit that is a practical gift. I haven't thought of an answering machine."
"Not only is it is practical, Mr. H, but 'em answerin' machines are popular now. They are not as expensive as they once were when they first came out. I heard Mrs. H mention how tired she is that lately she has been missin' important phone calls when I am out. I'm tellin' you, you can't go wrong. An answerin' machine is a perfect present for her birthday."
"I'll go out and buy her an answering machine tomorrow on my way to the office. Thanks, Max," Jonathan replies with a smile as he pats him on the shoulder.
"Any time. Trust me she'll love the answerin' machine."
"I'm sold on the idea. If Jennifer wants an answering machine she is going to get one. Goodnight," Jonathan says as he starts to head out of the room.
"Goodnight, Mr. H," Max replies as he turns the faucet on. He returns to finish up cleaning the dishes.
Hart House Later That Night
Jonathan is finishing up getting ready for bed. Jennifer sits up in bed taking down some notes on a notepad with a pen.
"Darling, I hope I didn't hurt your feelings when I was teasing about your cooking," Jonathan shouts out from the bathroom as he washes his face.
"No, I knew you were just teasing," Jennifer shouts back as she stops taking notes. "Do you have much planned for my birthday?"
"I don't think I heard you," Jonathan replies with a smile as he drys off his face with a towel by the sink.
"Oh, yes, you did!" Jennifer exclaims with a smile as he walks into the bedroom.
"Why? Do you want to go somewhere exciting where we can be alone just the two of us to celebrate?" Jonathan asks with a mischievous grin as he crawls into bed next to her.
"That would be a refreshing change for my birthday," Jennifer replies with a smile.
"We could make mad and passionate love," Jonathan says as he leans over and kisses her behind the ear.
"Jonathan, could you give me a few minutes to finish up my writing?" Jennifer asks with a chuckle.
"Finish it tomorrow, sweetheart," Jonathan replies softly and seductively. He begins kissing her on the neck causing his wife to smile gayly.
"I can't, darling. I have a deadline to meet," Jennifer says laughing. "I am way behind already. I've been missing phone calls. I have been slacking," she tells him kissing her husband passionately on the lips.
"I admire a dedicated woman, but there is a time and place for everything," Jonathan replies as he is now kissing her on the lips.
"That is right. Now is not the time or the place," Jennifer says as she picks up her pen.
Before she can start writing Jonathan gives her a long and memorable kiss. Jennifer finds herself giving in.
"Oh, what the hell!" Jennifer exclaims with a chuckle. She places the pad and pen on the table.
She wraps her arms around him as they lock into a passionate and hot kiss.
Hart House The Following Day
The next morning Jennifer walks down the final steps of the stairs leading into the foyer. Freeway rushes up to her.
"Good morning, Freeway," Jennifer replies with a smile as she bends down to pet the dog.
She walks into the kitchen to find Max standing in front of the stove making a grocery list.
"Max," she says.
"Yeah, Mrs. H?" Max asks he stops writing and looks up at Jennifer. "Oh, I am makin' a grocery list for when I go out this afternoon. Anythin' you want me to pick up for you and Mr. H while I am out?"
"No, we are good. Thanks. Max, did Jonathan give you any hint what he is getting me for my birthday?"
"Now, Mrs. H," Max replies in disbelief Jennifer would ask such a question. "Even if he did do you think I am the kinda guy that couldn't keep a secret?"
Jennifer gives him a look of mistrust.
"Oh, come on. I can keep a secret if I put my mind to it."
Freeway is standing beside Jennifer. He barks.
"Keep out of this will you, Freeway?" Max asks giving the dog a look of frustration. "Mr. H didn't even say a word about your birthday present," he replies looking up at Jennifer.
"I believe you," Jennifer replies with a smile. "I just hope whatever it is it is an improvement over that antique car he got me as a gift years ago."
"You can put your mind at ease there. They don't sell automobiles at 'em office supply stores," Max replies casually.
"Oh, Jonathan, what are you thinking?!" Jennifer asks rolling her eyes giving Max a look of disappointment.
"What are you worried about? I'm sure it'll be nice and somethin' you can use around the house."
"Max, do me a favor. If you ever go shopping for my birthday take me along with you," Jennifer tells him. She heads toward the living room. She shakes her head in disbelief. She goes out shutting the door on her way.
Max looks after her, baffled, wondering what it is he said wrong.
Radio Shack
Jonathan walks into the store and begins looking for an answering machine. A young man walks over to him.
"May I help you, sir?" he asks.
"Yes, I am looking for my wife a birthday present."
"Sir, are you sure you at the right place?" the employee asks giving him a look of surprise noticing how well-dressed Jonathan is.
"Is this Radio Shack?"
"Yes."
"Then I am at the right place," Jonathan replies with a smile. "I want to get my wife an answering machine. I hear they are not so expensive as they once were."
"No, sir. We have been selling a lot of those this year. Come with me, please," the young man says. He shows him over to where answering machines are displayed to sell. "If I am not being too inquisitive may I ask is your wife's taste different than other women’s?" he asks turning to Jonathan.
"No, I wouldn't say that about my wife. She has exquisite taste. However, Jennifer is definitely not like any other woman," Jonathan replies with a smile.
"She must be if she much prefers an answering machine over diamonds or furs," the young salesman says puzzled out of all things to buy for a woman as a present Jonathan is purchasing an answering machine.
"No, you don't understand," Jonathan explains with a grin. "Jennifer has jewelry and everything a woman like her would want. That is why I am purchasing something she doesn't have. I always try to find her the perfect gift, and I happen to know my wife. She'll love the answering machine. Now, which one would you recommend? I want the finest one money can buy. Money is no object," he says with contentment. He is satisfied and certain he is purchasing something his wife would love to receive as a present.
Hart Industries
Miss Waring is working at her desk when the telephone rings. She picks up the receiver.
"Good morning. Jonathan Hart's office," she answers.
"Is Jonathan in?" a male voice asks eagerly to speak to him.
"No, I'm sorry. Mr. Hart hasn't come into the office just yet. What is your name and number, sir? I'll let him know about the call just soon as he walks in," Miss Waring replies as she has pen and paper on hand.
She hears a click on the other end of the line.
"Hello? Hello?" Miss Waring asks wondering if the man hung up or they were cut off.
Just then the door opens, and Jonathan comes walking in. He is in a cheerful mood after purchasing Jennifer's present.
"Good morning, Kelly," Jonathan says with a smile as she hangs up the receiver.
"Good morning. Mr. Hart, you just missed a call from a man wanting to speak to you. He didn't leave his name or number. He did sound very eager to speak to you."
"If he is that eager to speak to me he'll call back. Put the call straight through if he does. Would you please call the florist and have them deliver a dozen red roses tomorrow afternoon for Jennifer? Just have the card say, "Happy birthday, darling. Love, Jonathan."
"I'll call the florist right away," Kelly replies picking up the receiver. She starts dialing the number. "Oh, the tickets you purchased arrived. I put them on your desk," she says looking up at her employer.
"Thank you, " Jonathan replies with a smile.
Jonathan heads toward his office and opens the door. He walks in and shuts the door as he hears Kelly placing the order of flowers for Jennifer.
Hart Industries That Afternoon
Jonathan is sitting at a table with some men engaging in a business discussion. Stanley stands facing them. He is reading the financial report of the company over the past year.
"I'm proud to inform you gentlemen, and Mr. Hart, sir, that this past year has been the most successful regarding Hart Industries' finances in a long time. This company has increased to the point that it is not only one of the most profitable global conglomerates in the world," Stanley says before Jonathan cuts him off.
"Stanley, I appreciate your high praise, but could you please just get down to reading the financial report? These gentlemen and I want to go to lunch," Jonathan tells his accountant calmly and patiently as he sits back in his chair.
"Yes, sir. I'm sorry, Mr. Hart. I'll get down to the finances right away without further ado," Stanley replies with a nod. "There is exactly-" he says just as Jonathan's intercom buzzes.
"Excuse me," Jonathan says rising to his feet. He walks over to his desk and presses a button on the intercom.
"Yes, Kelly?" Jonathan asks standing behind the machine.
"I'm sorry to interrupt the meeting, but the man that wanted to speak to you is on line one," Jonathan's secretary tells him.
"Thanks," Jonathan replies picking up the receiver. "Jonathan Hart," he answers.
There is a click on the other end of the line. Jonathan looks at the receiver wondering why the caller hung up. He ponders what is going on as he hangs up the receiver. "You can get back to the financial report, Stanley," Jonathan says turning around. He is heading back to the table ready to resume the discussion.
Hart House That Night
That night Jonathan and Jennifer are getting dressed up. Jonathan is wearing a tuxedo, and Jennifer has on a fancy evening dress.
"Darling, I do not understand why we are going to all of this trouble dressing up when we are just going out for dinner," Jennifer says as she places her feet into her shoes.
"It is your birthday so why not get all dressed up for dinner? We are going out anyway," Jonathan replies with a warm grin as he walks over to her. He zips up the back of her dress. "Hmm, that scent is turning me on," he says with a sly smile as his wife turns around.
"Oh, yeah? Do you know what perfume I am wearing?" Jennifer asks coyly as Jonathan wraps his arms around her neck.
"No, tell me. I am dying to know," Jonathan replies kissing her on the neck.
"It is the perfume you had made especially for me," Jennifer says as she shoots him a wink. "I only wear it on special occasions like tonight. I want to save it for as long as possible."
"You are so sentimental," Jonathan replies kissing her on the lips. "Come on. Let's go. I want to get us a good table," he says taking her hand as they start to walk out of the bedroom.
"Why are you in such a rush? Our reservation isn't for another hour," Jennifer says as they walk into the corridor. The whole house is covered in darkness. "Jonathan, what are you up to? Why is the house so dark?" she asks as he helps her down the stairs.
"Now, Max!" Jonathan exclaims as they are halfway down the stairs.
Suddenly the lights come on. They walk into the foyer. Jennifer happens to look over and sees an answering machine laying on the bar with a red ribbon wrapped around it. Max is standing at the side with a big smile on his face.
"Happy birthday, Mrs. H!" Max exclaims.
Jennifer is stunned. She and Jonathan walk into the living room. She keeps staring at the answering machine. She manages to fake a smile as they walk over to the bar.
"Well, darling, now all your problems are solved. You will no longer have to worry about missing any phone calls while Max or any of us are out," Jonathan says with a smile. "The salesman told me this is the best answering machine available. What do you think?" he asks as he turns around to face her.
"Well, I am so surprised I can't find the words," Jennifer replies still in shock that out of all things Jonathan could have bought her as a birthday gift he purchased an answering machine.
"See, Mr. H? I told you, you couldn't go wrong with buyin' her an answerin' machine!" Max exclaims with a smile thinking Jonathan has purchased Jennifer the perfect present.
"You told him about this machine?" Jennifer asks managing to keep herself from shooting him a look.
"Yeah, Mr. H asked me last night if you gave me any hints about what you wanted for your birthday. I figured with all of the calls you've been missin' the answerin' machine would be the perfect present."
"The answering machine certainly is different," Jennifer replies looking over the machine. "An answering machine? Oh, Jonathan, this present just showed how much thought you put into it. It is so so," she says struggling to find the words to describe her thoughts.
"Unique," Jonathan suggests.
"Oh, this present certainly is unique all right," Jennifer replies turning around to face him.
"She's crazy about it!" Max exclaims as he and Jonathan exchange smiles.
"Oh, yes, I'm crazy about it! It is a dream come true. An answering machine for my birthday! What else could have been a better gift?" she asks.
"Here, let me show you how you would work this machine," Jonathan replies as he starts to press a button.
"No, let's postpone showing off this magnificent present until we get back. It will give me something to look forward to," Jennifer says as she takes his hand. "Well, Max, we'll see you after dinner," she says turning to him.
"Oh, I won't be here. I am goin' over to Katherine's. I'm going to cook her that meal you and Mr. H ate last night. I think I got the upside-down cake cooked just right this time."
"Wait a minute. I have something else I want to give Jennifer for her birthday," Jonathan says reaching into the pocket of his tuxedo.
"Oh, darling, don't tell me you got me a cassette too!"
"That's cute," Jonathan replies with a smile as he brings out an envelope. "It just so happens I got us two tickets to the symphony tonight front row center," he says as he hands her the envelope. "Happy birthday, darling," he says kissing her on the lips.
"Oh, thank you, darling!" Jennifer replies with a smile surprised Jonathan got her another present-one that she actually likes. She kisses him on the lips. She opens the envelope and takes out the tickets. She looks at them and sees the symphony starts at 8:00 PM. "We better be heading on our way," she says putting the tickets in her purse.
"Want me to hold onto the tickets?" Jonathan asks taking her hand as they head toward the door.
"No, thanks. I think I'll just hold onto them," Jennifer replies with a smile. "Goodnight, Max. Good luck with Katherine," she says turning to him as Jonathan opens the door.
"Thanks. Enjoy the symphony, Mrs. H!"
"Thanks, Max," Jonathan replies as they head out the door. He shuts the door after them.
Ebell Of Los Angeles
Soon after Jonathan and Jennifer are sitting in the front row of the old theater as they enjoy listening to the symphony that just started performing. Jennifer is really enjoying hearing the symphony being performed in person.
Hart House
While the Harts are attending the symphony and enjoying the night out in honor of Jennifer's birthday the telephone is ringing inside the main house. In the living room the answering machine kicks in soon after no one answers the call. Instead of leaving a message the caller hangs up.
Ebell Of Los Angeles
Jonathan and Jennifer are still listening to the symphony which is halfway over.
Once again the telephone is ringing inside the house. After ringing a few times Max's voice comes on the answering machine.
"Hart Residence. Mr. and Mrs. H ain't able to come to the phone now. If you leave your name, number, and message they'll get back to you when they can."
A beep is heard before the caller leaves a message. It is the same male voice who called Jonathan's office that morning. He is frantic and struggling to get his words out.
"Jonathan, I need your help! My life is in danger! Call me as soon as you get this message!" Before the caller can finish leaving his message the opening of a door and footsteps are heard. "NO! PLEASE DON'T!" the caller yells frantically before a gunshot is heard. There is the thud of what sounds like a body falling to the ground before the line goes dead.
A House in Beverly Hills
In the dark of the night two people dressed in dark clothing are carrying a body over to an opened trunk of a car that is parked on the side of the street by the front of the house. They carefully place the body in the trunk before quietly shutting it. The strangers approach the front of the car and get in before driving away. Just as the automobile starts down the street an old woman is standing outside of her home next door. She is watching the vehicle disappear out of sight with a look of fear on her face.
Hart House
It is almost midnight when Jonathan and Jennifer approach the front door of their home after returning from the symphony. Jonathan unlocks the door before opening it. He and Jennifer stand outside looking at each other with a warm smile. They have their arms wrapped around each other's neck.
"That was some symphony tonight! Thank you for purchasing the tickets," Jennifer says.
"I thought it would be the ideal way to end the evening before your birthday."
"It was very romantic, darling," Jennifer replies seductively. "And I am very impressed."
"You know me: the incurable romantic," Jonathan says seductively kissing his wife on the lips. "The music was very stimulating."
"I wasn't talking about the symphony. I was talking about you. You managed to stay awake without falling asleep once."
"Oh, come now, darling. You know how much I am an admirer of music. I just can't get into the opera."
"The opera can be considered romantic."
"I know, but the performers don't sing one lyric in English. I feel like I am watching a foreign film when I attend the opera with you."
"Would you have purchased tickets if the opera was being performed tonight instead?"
"Let me tell you something. When it comes to making you happy I always put my personal feelings aside especially on your birthday. I would have purchased the theater if you wanted me to," Jonathan replies before kissing her on the lips. "Now how about we make our own beautiful music in bed?"
Jennifer smiles before kissing Jonathan on the lips. "I'm in the mood for love," Jennifer sings coyly.
"Simply because you're near me," Jonathan sings coyly before kissing his wife again on the lips.
They embrace as they kiss each other on the lips. They smile before Jonathan takes her hand leading her into the foyer. He shuts the door. Just as they are about to approach the stairs Freeway comes rushing up to them barking.
"I think he missed us," Jennifer says with a smile as she bends down to pet their dog.
Jonathan bends down to pet Freeway when Jennifer looks up and sees a light signaling a message was left for them on the answering machine.
"Oh, someone called while we were gone," Jennifer tells Jonathan wondering who could have called them at night.
They walk over to the bar, and Jennifer presses the button to play the message.
"Your first message," Jonathan replies with a smile as he places an arm around his wife just as the message is about to start.
"Jonathan, I need your help! My life is in danger! Call me as soon as you get this message!"
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances wondering who the caller was. They continue listening when they hear the opening of a door and footsteps. "NO! PLEASE DON'T!" the caller yells frantically before the gunshot is fired. The thud of a body falling to the ground before the line goes dead is all that is left of the message.
Jonathan and Jennifer look at each other in shock after overhearing a murder on the answering machine. Jonathan picks up the receiver and dials the number of the police.
"This is Jonathan Hart. Could I speak to Lieutenant Grey? I would like to report a murder," he says. He looks at Jennifer wondering what they are getting themselves into now and why the victim called before he was shot.
A short time later Lieutenant Grey and two police officers are standing in the living room. They are by the bar as Jonathan replays the message the victim left for them. Jennifer sits on one of the couches.
"Jonathan, do you have any idea who the caller might have been? Did you recognize his voice?" Lieutenant Grey asks.
"No, not that I know of, lieutenant," Jonathan replies.
"The message doesn't give us anything to go on. I'll have the department keep a look out for a body."
"Too bad the phone company can't be of any help," Jennifer comments.
"That reminds me that today at the office a man called twice," Jonathan says. "I never spoke to him. He called before I arrived and hung up before Kelly could get his name and number."
"He called twice?" the lieutenant asks.
"Yes, he called back this afternoon while Stanley was going over the financial report of this past year. Kelly put the call through. The man hung up soon as I answered."
"You didn't think anything of it?"
"Other than striking me as strange no."
"I'll call you if we find out anything. Considering there are murders committed every day there is no guarantee we will know who the caller was unless we can find some evidence."
"Maybe you'll get lucky and find Jonathan's number on his body," Jennifer replies.
"Maybe," Lieutenant Grey says turning to Jennifer. "What's the ribbon for?" he asks turning back to Jonathan noticing the ribbon on the answering machine.
"The answering machine was my birthday present for Jennifer."
"Oh, well, thanks for giving us a call," Lieutenant Grey replies. "Goodnight," he says as he and the officers head toward the door.
"Goodnight," Jennifer replies.
Just as Lieutenant Grey and his men enter the foyer the front door opens. Max walks in.
"Good evening, Max," Lieutenant Grey says as he and the other two policemen walk out the door. Max looks after them wondering who got murdered now.
"Evenin', lieutenant," Max replies as he watches them get into their car.
"How did your evening go with Katherine?" Jennifer asks as Max shuts the front door.
"Fine. What happened? Were you hurt, Mr. and Mrs. H?" Max asks with worry as he walks into the living room.
"No, we are fine, Max," Jonathan replies. "Darling, I do not know about you, but I am exhausted," he says turning to Jennifer.
"Yes, I am tired too, darling," Jennifer says as she rises from the sofa. "Let's go to bed," she tells Jonathan as she takes off her earrings. "Goodnight, Max," she tells him as she and Jonathan start to head out of the living room together.
"Wait a minute," Max replies.
Jonathan and Jennifer turn to face him.
"Ain't somebody gonna tell me what happened? If you ain't hurt someone must have been killed," he says dying to know what occurred in his absence.
"We will fill you in in the morning. We are too tired," Jonathan replies. "Goodnight," he says as he and Jennifer wrap their arm around each other. They walk out of the room heading toward the stairs.
"How do you like that? I go out for an evenin' to cook for a dame, and I miss all the excitement," Max mumbles to himself with disappointment. He hears a bark from down below and looks down to see Freeway looking up at him. "Ain't it a shame you can't tell me what happened?" he asks the dog.
Freeway barks.
Hart House The Next Morning
Jennifer is sound asleep the following morning in bed. She is sleeping in. The door to the bedroom opens. Jonathan and Max burst in followed by Freeway. They start singing, "Happy Birthday," to Jennifer.
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you," Jonathan and Max sing as Jennifer slowly wakes up.
She smiles as she sits up in bed as they continue singing.
"Happy birthday, Jennifer," Jonathan sings while Max sings, "Happy birthday, Mrs. H."
"Happy birthday to you!" Jonathan and Max sing out as they finish singing.
"Well, thank you! What a delightful way to wake up on my birthday!" Jennifer exclaims with a smile. "Are you planning on making a cake too?" she asks as Jonathan sits down in front of her.
"Darling, get dressed," Jonathan replies leaning over to kiss her on the lips. "I am taking you out to breakfast and then we are going to spend the entire day together," he says with a twinkle in his eye.
"In that case I'll get ready now," Jennifer says with a smile kissing Jonathan on the lips. She shoots him a wink as she gets out of bed.
"Max bring the Corniche out, will you? I will be driving it today instead of the Mercedes," Jonathan tells him as Jennifer walks into the bathroom.
"Sure thing, Mr. H," Max replies with a smile. He heads out of the room with Freeway following him.
A Restaurant
Jonathan and Jennifer are finishing up their breakfast. The waiter is pouring more coffee into their cups.
"What do you have planned for us today?" Jennifer asks as the waiter walks away.
"I thought I would leave our plans entirely up to you," Jonathan replies with a smile.
"Oh, well, in that case, I'll have to think," Jennifer replies with a smile as they sip their coffee. "You know we could start by taking a drive," she says as Jonathan notices a headline on the front page of a newspaper that catches his attention
"Beverly Hills Resident Found Murdered On Side Of Street"
A man younger than him is sitting at a table across from them on the other side of the restaurant reading the morning newspaper of the Los Angeles Tribune.
"What do you think, darling?" Jennifer asks as Jonathan continues glancing at the headline.
"What do I think about what?" Jonathan asks his attention distracted. He notices the photograph of a man printed out on the front page underneath the headline.
Jennifer notices her husband is distracted. She stops sipping her coffee and turns around to see what her husband is staring at. A look of shock comes across Jonathan's face as he continues staring at the photo. Jennifer reads the headline to herself and realizes why it caught her husband's attention. She glances at the photograph of the murder victim and turns around to look at her husband. She is also in shock.
"Jonathan, you recognize that man whose picture is on the front page?" she asks as the man reading the paper turns the newspaper around and continues reading the rest of the news.
"Yes, I do," Jonathan replies turning to look at his wife. "That man was one of the first business associates of mine."
"I have a feeling that drive is going to have to wait," Jennifer says with a sigh as the waiter approaches them with a mobile phone in his hand.
"Mr. Hart, you have a call from a Lieutenant Grey," the waiter tells Jonathan handing him the phone.
Jonathan takes the phone. "Lieutenant Grey, I gathered this has to do with the murdered man whose picture I saw on the front page just now," he says. "Thank you. Jennifer and I will be right down," he replies after listening for a few moments to what the lieutenant had to tell him on the other end of the receiver.
"What did the lieutenant find?" Jennifer asks with curiosity as she holds the cup of coffee in her hand.
"My name and number in the man's pocket, darling," Jonathan replies as he places the mobile phone down on the table. "Lieutenant Grey wants us to come right down to the station," he says taking out his wallet.
Jennifer places her cup of coffee down. She and Jonathan exchange glances.
Los Angeles Police Department
Lieutenant Grey is sitting in his office in the police department when the door opens. Jonathan and Jennifer walk in.
"Thanks for coming over," Lieutenant Grey says. "Take a seat, Jonathan and Jennifer. You may be here a while," he informs them as Jonathan and Jennifer take a seat across from his desk."Now as I already told you over the phone we found your name and number in his pocket. In his wallet to be precise."
"Lieutenant, before you go on now that I saw the picture I do recognize the man. He was one of the first business associates I worked with soon after Hart Industries opened," Jonathan tells the lieutenant. "I knew him to be a very honest and decent man."
"I think I should tell you, Jonathan, that the man you knew as a businessman was working for the district attorney's office," Lieutenant Grey says sitting back in his chair.
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances in shock.
"He was working for the district attorney's office?" Jennifer asks in shock.
"Yes, I am afraid I can't tell you anything else. That is all the DA will tell me. They're being very secretive about the whole matter. Jonathan, when was the last time you were in contact with Robert Tinsworthy?"
"Lieutenant, I haven't been in contact with Robert Tinsworthy since we concluded our business deal back in 1969," Jonathan replies casually.
"What was the nature of your business?"
"Hart Industries was installing a computer for classified information for the Air Force. Tinsworthy was an intelligence officer. He came to Hart Industries knowing I had been a Navy pilot. The last I heard he retired and opened up his own business in electronics."
"Sounds like your old business associate's death has something to do with his services as an intelligence officer. Since the DA found out about his death they won't let us investigate into his activities. Right now they want us to put the case on hold."
"Maybe Jonathan could talk to them," Jennifer replies turning to look at the lieutenant.
"Darling, even though I served in the Navy and knew the man doesn't mean they would appreciate me asking questions any more than the police," Jonathan says turning to face his wife.
"Jonathan is right. When the district attorney asks the police not to interfere no one can find out what is going on. This is one case I can't help you with. Any idea why the DA would be interested in Tinworthy's past?" Lieutenant Grey asks sitting up.
"You know how men are who work in the Armed forces. They are very secretive about classified information. Tinsworthy and I just exchanged stories about our time in the military. Lieutenant Grey, is there anything you found on the body we can take a look at?"
"We didn't find anything on the body that would help in the investigation," Lieutenant Grey replies opening a drawer. He takes out a plastic bag filled with a wallet, keys, and the paper with Jonathan's contact information. He hands Jonathan the bag.
Jonathan takes the bag and takes out the paper. It reads, "Jonathan Hart
3100 Willow Pond Drive
Bel Air, CA
Telephone Number: 555-2929
Hart Industries
112 North Las Palmas
Los Angeles, CA
Telephone: 555-1271"
Jonathan takes out the wallet and looks for an address on the driver's license. The address is 524 North Elm Drive
Beverly Hills, CA 90210
He places the wallet and the note back into the bag before handing it back to the lieutenant.
"Jonathan, if you are thinking of going over to Tinsworthy's home I think I should warn you it could get you into trouble," Lieutenant Grey replies taking the bag.
"I wouldn't think of doing such a thing that would risk causing any problems between you and the district attorney," Jonathan says as he and Jennifer rise from their seat. They start to walk over to the door when the lieutenant speaks to him.
"Jonathan, here's the key," Lieutenant Grey tells him holding up a key. "If the district attorney finds out you've gone over to his home at least you won't be charged with breaking and entering."
"Thank you," Jonathan replies with a smile surprised that Lieutenant Grey is willing to hand him over the key.
"Lieutenant Grey, you must be desperate to find out who killed Robert Tinsworthy if you are willing to hand Jonathan over the key," Jennifer says with surprise.
"More like curious to know why the district attorney doesn't want the police investigating this homicide. Only one thing I ask. You don't know me, and I don't know you. Is that clear?"
"I don't believe we know this man. Do we, darling?" Jonathan asks turning to Jennifer.
"No, this is the first time we've met him," Jennifer replies looking straight at her husband.
"Go on. Get out of here and be careful," Lieutenant Grey replies shaking his head in disbelief as Jonathan holds the door open for his wife.
Jonathan and Jennifer walk out of the lieutenant's office. Jonathan shuts the door behind them.
A House In Beverly Hills
Inside the house two unseen people are pouring gasoline around the entire living room. Soon as they finish they throw the cans of gasoline aside before heading toward the front door. One of them takes out a box of matches from the pocket of their jacket and takes out a match. The match is lit before being tossed in the middle of the room starting to set the room on fire. They hurry out of the house quietly shutting the door behind them.
Jonathan and Jennifer are driving down a street in their Corniche. They are approaching the address Jonathan found in Tinsworthy's wallet. As they approach their destination the Harts are horrified and shocked to see the house they came to look over is burning right in front of their eyes. Jonathan brings the car to a stop nearby. He picks up the mobile car phone as Jennifer watches the fire continue to spread.
"LA Mobile, get me the fire department," Jonathan says into the receiver as he turns his attention to the fire.
By now the entire house is in flames with smoke everywhere.
"Well, at least we won't have to worry about being caught," Jennifer says turning to face her husband as he waits for the mobile operator to put his call through to the fire station.
"One thing is for sure any evidence we may have had a chance of discovering has just gone up in smoke," Jonathan replies as he and Jennifer exchange glances.
A short time later a firetruck is standing nearby along with a police car. The firemen are standing outside the now almost burned down home with water hoses as they attempt to put out the fire. They stand at a safe distance. All of the neighbors are standing on the sidewalks watching the firemen attend to their duty along with Jonathan, Jennifer, and Lieutenant Grey.
"Jonathan, it is a good thing you and Jennifer arrived when you did," Lieutenant Grey says turning to them. "Another minute the rest of that house would have burned down to the ground."
"Did you and your men get a chance to check for any evidence?" Jonathan asks as they stand near their parked vehicle.
"We did. We didn't find anything. We had just finished going over the house when the call came from the district attorney's office not to continue with our investigation."
"There had to be a good reason for setting the house on fire," Jennifer comments. "Some kind of evidence that may have been overlooked."
"Yes, the killer or killers wasted no time seeing to it we didn't find anything that could connect them to Tinsworthy's murder," Lieutenant Grey replies.
"The killers definitely were covering up some kind of loose end," Jonathan agrees.
"Do you think it could have something to do with that message Tinsworthy left us just moments before he was killed?" Jennifer asks turning to him.
"Yes, I do. It was either that or something that would reveal who his killers are."
"The evidence destroyed may have even revealed what his connection with them was like the DA's office. I wonder just what is it is the district attorney's office is keeping to themselves."
"Did you question any of the neighbors?" Jonathan asks turning back to the lieutenant.
"Yes, I did none of them saw or heard anything."
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances.
"Now I have to get back to the station before the district attorney calls. Hopefully I can convince him just two concerned citizens were passing by when they saw the fire."
"In other words you are not going to reveal our names?" Jonathan asks.
"No, if he knew you were driving down Beverly Hills he would know immediately you were coming here to investigate. Remember what they say, curiosity killed the cat so once again be careful," Lieutenant Grey replies giving them a serious look before walking over to his car.
"They also say a cat has nine lives, and I have a strong hunch we just used up one of ours," Jennifer says turning to Jonathan.
"I have that exact same feeling, darling," Jonathan replies placing an arm around her.
Meanwhile across the way out of sight are two men in an automobile watching the Harts.
"I have a feeling the Harts may be a problem," one of them says turning to his companion.
"You have a right to be concerned, but you don't need to be. They have been taken care of," he replies still keeping an eye on Jonathan and Jennifer.
"What do you mean by that?"
"Let's just say I have given Jonathan and Jennifer Hart something else they need to be more concerned about. Something that will keep their mind off of things better left alone," the other man replies calmly.
He starts the engine, and the car starts to drive away. The old lady, who witnessed the killers driving off last night, is watching the vehicle drive out of sight with fear. She stands on the sidewalk out of sight. She shakes her head and starts to walk back to her house.
"How about we take that drive you were talking about?" Jonathan asks as he and Jennifer walk back to the Corniche hand in hand. "Since there is nothing else we can do we should just enjoy the rest of the day together. It is my wife's birthday, and I intend to see to it she enjoys herself," Jonathan says kissing her on the cheek.
"I would love nothing more," Jennifer replies with a smile as she returns the kiss. Jonathan holds the door open for her. She gets in, and he shuts the door.
Just as Jonathan walks over to the driver's side Jennifer happens to notice the old neighbor staring out the window. The firemen continue putting the fire out which is calming down by now. Jonathan starts their vehicle, and they drive away. The neighbor watches them head out of Beverly Hills before returning her attention to the fire.
Hart House Night
Jonathan and Jennifer walk into the foyer of their house sometime early that evening. Jonathan shuts the door behind them. Max walks into the living room and approaches them.
"Good evenin', Mr. and Mrs. H," Max says. "Enjoy your day out, Mrs. H?" he asks turning to Jennifer.
"After the fire yes," Jennifer replies.
"Fire? What fire? What happened now? After Lieutenant Grey called wantin' to speak to Mr. H this mornin' I've been wonderin' what has been happenin' now with you two. First the phone call last night and now I'm hearin' about some fire. Is anyone finally goin' to tell me what is goin' on around here?" Max asks in desperation.
"Yes, Max, we'll tell you all about it," Jonathan assures him. "But first was there any delivery this afternoon?"
"Yeah, some flowers arrived this afternoon for Mrs. H. I put them in a vase. They're on the coffee table in the livin' room," Max says standing aside.
Jennifer turns to Jonathan with a grin knowing immediately he sent her the flowers.
"Is there a card?" Jennifer asks innocently as she and Jonathan walk into the living room heading toward the coffee table.
"Yeah, right by the flowers," Max replies turning around to face them.
Jennifer stands back once upon seeing beautiful dozen red roses placed carefully and neatly in a vase.
She notices the card by the vase and picks it up.
"Happy, birthday, darling. Love, Jonathan," Jennifer reads aloud as Jonathan stands by her side listening.
"Now will someone fill me in? You know how I hate comin' into the middle of a picture," Max says a bit impatiently.
"Oh, darling, the flowers are so beautiful!" Jennifer exclaims with a wide smile as she turns around throwing her arms around Jonathan's neck.
"They are not the only beautiful thing in my sight," Jonathan replies in a loving tone with a warm smile as he reaches over to kiss her on the lips.
"You really did a lot for me for my birthday. The tickets were enough," Jennifer says.
"Nothing is ever enough for my wife," Jonathan insists as they continue kissing each other on the lips as they close their eyes.
"Do I need to get a ticket to a seat or is this romantic picture drawn' to a close?" Max asks walking up behind them as Jonathan and Jennifer continue kissing each other.
Freeway barks from down below. Max looks down to see the dog standing beside him as he sits up wagging his tail. He appears to be smiling at his owners being affectionate toward each other.
"Don't you start," Max says looking down at the dog. "I want to know what is happen' before the night comes to an end."
"You are so sentimental," Jennifer says as they pull out of their kiss with their arms still wrapped around each other's neck.
"Now that we got that settled am I goin' to find out what is goin' on or do I need to change the channel before the film is over?" Max asks as they turn around to face them.
"Max, I thought you were a romantic yourself," Jonathan replies with surprise.
"Yeah, but not when I'm dyin' of suspense."
"All right, Max. We'll tell you now," Jennifer says with a grin.
Before they can fill Max in the intercom to the gate buzzes. Max sighs and rolls his eyes.
"Are you going to find out who is at the gate?" Jonathan asks teasingly.
Without replying Max walks over to the intercom. The intercom is on the wall near the bar and facing the room. He presses a button and speaks into the intercom.
"Yeah?" he asks.
"Is Jonathan Hart at home? I have a subpoena I have to serve him," a male voice replies.
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange uncomfortable glances.
"Tell him to come on up," Jonathan says looking at Max with a shrug who is looking at him with curiosity.
"Come on up," Max answers before opening the gate from where he is standing.
"Why do I get the feeling things are not looking good?" Jennifer asks turning to face her husband.
"Why do I get the feelin' someone ain't gonna tell me what has been goin' on while I've been kept in the dark?" Max asks impatiently.
"Max, just calm down," Jonathan replies. "We'll fill you in right now. Last night while we were out a man called wanting to speak to me, but before he could leave his name and number he was shot."
"That is why Lieutenant Grey and his men were here last night," Jennifer explains. "They arrived to hear the message on the answering machine after Jonathan reported the murder."
"Only I couldn't tell them anything. I didn't even recognize the man's voice," Jonathan says.
"Then this morning while Jennifer and I were eating breakfast I saw a picture of a man on the front page newspaper."
"Seein' his picture refreshed your memory," Max concludes.
"Yes, do you remember a man by the name of Robert Tinsworthy?"
"Yeah, I read about his death in the paper this mornin'. He was one of your first business associates. Wasn't he an intelligence officer who asked you to install a computer for the Air Force? What happened to him?"
"He opened his own electronics business after retiring," Jennifer replies.
"I still don't get what this has to do with Mr. H gettin' a call from this fellow."
"You're not the only one. Jonathan and I don't have all the answers yet ourselves."
"According to Lieutenant Grey Tinsworthy was working for the district attorney's office. They don't know any more than we do because the DA doesn't want him or anyone investigating," Jonathan says.
"An intelligence officer workin' for the DA's office?" Max says baffled shaking his head in disbelief. "But where does the fire come into this?"
"Tinsworthy's home in Beverly Hills was almost burned to the ground today," Jennifer explains. "Jonathan and I arrived soon after the fire was set."
"Arson?!!" Max asks in shock.
"That's what we believe, Max, but we have no proof of that. Lieutenant Grey is going to let me know soon as he hears back from the fire department," Jonathan says just as the doorbell rings.
Max is still in shock at everything Jonathan and Jennifer just told him. They head toward the door. Max opens the door to find a middle age man with a subpoena in his hand.
"I'm Jonathan Hart," Jonathan says reluctantly as the man looks from Max to Jonathan.
"Here you go," the man replies handing Jonathan the subpoena.
"What is this all about?" Jennifer asks. "Why is my husband being served a subpoena?" she asks with concern.
"I don't read them. I just deliver," the man replies looking at Jonathan and Jennifer before walking away.
The Harts and Max look after him for a few moments as the man heads toward his car. Max shuts the door. He and Jennifer turn to look at Jonathan who is beginning to look over the subpoena.
"I have to appear at the grand jury tomorrow morning at ten o' clock," Jonathan says reading what the legal document says.
"Why?" Jennifer asks in shock.
"It doesn't say, darling," Jonathan replies handing her the subpoena. "It just says I am ordered to appear before the grand jury tomorrow at ten o' clock."
"Maybe you can call sayin' you've come down with a contagious disease, and the doc says you can't leave the house for a month," Max says.
"Max, I can't just show up because I don't want to. Like it or not it is my duty to appear in court."
"I hate to admit it, but Jonathan is right. He doesn't have a choice," Jennifer replies looking over the document herself. "Could you call that friend of yours? Maybe Paul knows what this is all about," she says turning to face Jonathan.
"I'll call him right now," Jonathan says as he heads straight back into the living room with his wife and Max following behind. He picks up the telephone receiver from the table by a couch and dials a number. He waits a few moments before his call is answered. "Paul, this is Jonathan Hart. I hate to bother you at home, but I have just been served a subpoena. I have been ordered to appear before the grand jury tomorrow morning. Do you have any idea what this is about?" he asks. He listens to Paul's response on the other end of the line. Jennifer and Max stand waiting anxiously. "Thanks anyway. Goodnight," Jonathan replies before hanging up the receiver. "Paul said this is the first he has heard about me appearing before the grand jury," he says turning to face Jennifer and Max. "He did offer me some legal advice."
"What?" Jennifer asks as she sits down on the couch next to her husband.
"To remember the fifth amendment," Jonathan replies sitting down next to his wife.
They look to see Max quietly counting on his fingers.
"What are you doing?" Jennifer asks.
"Tryin' to remember what the fifth amendment is, Mrs. H," Max answers as he continues trying to remember while counting on his fingers.
"I refuse to answer on the grounds it could-"Jonathan starts to say.
"Incriminate me," Max finishes what Jonathan was trying to tell him. "How about some Brandy?" he asks.
"After the news we just received we sure could use some," Jennifer says with a sigh as she places her arm around Jonathan in an attempt to console him.
Max walks over to the bar to pour some Brandy for them. Jennifer lies back on the couch placing her head on Jonathan's shoulder. Jonathan turns his body around. He places his arm around his wife as they snuggle up against each other while remaining silent. They are each curious to find out why Jonathan has been ordered to appear before the grand jury and worried over the outcome.
United States Court House That Night
Later that night the door to the prosecutor's office opens. The first man, who was watching the Harts outside Tinsworthy's home, walks in.
"You wanted to see me, Mr. Daniels?" he asks as he shuts the door behind him.
"Yes, I did, Harry," a man in a chair across from the desk with his back towards him replies. He turns around and faces him. The prosecutor is none other than the second man who was keeping an eye on Jonathan and Jennifer with him. "The reason I called you to meet me here after hours was to inform you that Jonathan Hart had been served a subpoena to appear before the grand jury tomorrow. Since you were so concerned about him becoming a problem I wanted to let you know."
"How did you manage to pull that off? Hart doesn't know anything," Harry replies walking over to him.
"Yes, well, I convinced a neighbor of Tinsworthy's to lie. That gave me enough reason to have Hart appear before the jury. Hopefully that will make him nervous enough to mind his own business. I know of him well enough to know he is not easily persuaded."
"If he can't be persuaded?"
" You will have to take a drastic step to see to it he is no longer a nuisance," Daniels replies. "Now we have a more important matter concerning Tinsworthy's death we need to discuss."
Hart House
That night Jonathan and Jennifer are lying in bed next to each other wide awake in the dark. They are both thinking about Jonathan appearing before the grand jury tomorrow.
"Jonathan, do you think it is possible that one of the neighbors did witness something last night? I think they are lying. One of them is anyway," Jennifer says turning around to face him.
Jonathan turns around and turns on the lamp on his side of the bed before turning around to face his wife.
"What makes you say that? I noticed you look distracted as we were getting ready to leave after the fire."
"I was distracted. I saw an old neighbor living right next door watching the firemen put out the fire. The look on her face wasn't just a look of curiosity. It was a look of fear."
"The kind that she was afraid to admit she saw something or someone," Jonathan suspects.
"Exactly the kind of look I saw on her face, darling. She was watching us drive away before returning her attention to the fire."
"Is she the only thing on your mind, darling?" Jonathan asks as they move closer to each other.
"No, I can't stop thinking about you appearing before the grand jury tomorrow," Jennifer replies nervously. "Prosecutors can come down hard when you don't give them the answers they want to hear. I don't want my husband being thrown into jail for contempt."
"I am nervous too," Jonathan confesses as he places his arm around his wife as they snuggle up to each other.
"I wish you didn't have to go."
"I wish I didn't have to go either. I wish I could take Max's suggestion. You know looking back I found Robert Tinsworthy to be a very honest man. The way he talked about his love of the Air Force and how it was the love of his life. Just like you are the love of my life," Jonathan says giving Jennifer a kiss on the lips.
"You are the love of my life too," Jennifer replies with a smile. She is deeply moved as always when Jonathan expresses his feelings about her. She reaches over and gives him a kiss on the lips. "Tell me more about Robert Tinsworthy."
"Robert Tinsworthy was dedicated to his work as an intelligence officer from what his superiors told me. They couldn't say enough nice things about him when I was at where he was stationed. He never left the room the entire time we installed the computer. Tinsworthy watched us like a hawk from a distance. I remember afterwards we had lunch together. He told me, 'Jonathan, when you are in the service no matter the job they assign you to take it seriously. It is an honor to be in the military so you should always respect that honor by not only your dedication, but the code of honesty and decency. It is a code I live by, and I can tell just from our conversation you live by that code. That is why I suggested Hart Industries install that new computer. I had a strong feeling you are a man with morals and values. I am pleased I have not made an error of judgment.' "
"After what you just told me I can't imagine a man who showed such respect for the Air Force had any reason of breaking a code he lived by," Jennifer says with some sadness at the possibility.
"That is one reason I am not looking forward to appearing in court. The thought of finding out the man I knew during the time he was an associate broke his code of honor would be such a shock."
Jennifer is silent as she thinks of what to say to comfort her husband.
"Darling, I know no matter what I say can make what you may have to face easier on you. I do know that Tinsworthy respected you. He showed that when he turned to you when he was in trouble," Jennifer says with a smile as she holds her husband's hand.
"Yes, he did. I do find comfort in knowing he respected me. I respected him too," Jonathan replies with a smile as he takes her hand which he kisses. "And no matter what I won't let him down. Let's get some sleep, darling," he says giving his wife another kiss.
Jonathan reaches over and turns off the lamp.
Hart House The Following Morning
Jonathan walks into the kitchen the next morning. Max is walking over to the table with a plate of waffles in his hand.
"Good morning, Max," Jonathan greets him walking over to him as Max places the plate down. "Waffles? You know how Jennifer feels about me having a healthy breakfast. Besides you cooked me pancakes on Monday," he tells him with surprise.
"Mrs. H ain't here," Max replies turning to face Jonathan. "She said to tell you she had an errand to run before your meetin' with the grand jury."
"An errand? Did she say where?" Jonathan asks with worry having a feeling his wife was off on her own investigation.
"Nope."
"I'll call the courthouse," Jonathan says walking over to the telephone on the wall.
"Number is 213-894-1565," Max tells him just as Jonathan picks up the receiver.
Jonathan turns to look at him in surprise at Max knowing the number.
"I called the courthouse this mornin' when I got up. They wouldn't tell me a thing," Max replies as Jonathan dials the number.
"They don't exactly give out that information to just anyone, Max," Jonathan tells him as he waits for his call to be answered. "Hello, this is Jonathan Hart. I have an appointment with the grand jury this morning. I was wondering if my wife came down there," he says to the person on the other end of the line.
Beverly Hills
Jennifer is walking up to the front door of the neighbor's house. She rings the doorbell. After a few moments the door opens, and the older lady has a look of surprise on her face upon seeing who her visitor is.
"Hello, I'm Mrs. Jonathan Hart," Jennifer says in a warm and friendly manner. "My husband was acquainted with Robert Tinsworthy. I was wondering if I could take up some of your time to talk."
"I already told the police I didn't see or witness anything the night of the man's death," the lady replies in a firm tone as she stands in the doorway looking at her visitor.
"I understand these past few days must have been unnerving for you, but I really need to talk to you. It is important," Jennifer says seriously while remaining polite.
The older lady looks at Jennifer for a few moments and thinks before replying. "How did your husband know Tinsworthy?"
"Tinsworthy was once a business associate years ago soon after Jonathan started Hart Industries. He left a message on our answering machine just moments before he was killed. Unfortunately he was shot before he could leave his name and number. The man was terrified. I apologize if I am intruding this early in the morning, but my husband and I have to go to court soon. He has been ordered to appear before the grand jury without an explanation. We think it may have something to do with Tinsworthy's murder."
"Come in," the woman replies stepping aside as she holds the door open for Jennifer.
"Thank you," Jennifer says with a smile as she walks into the woman's home.
"How can I be of help?" the lady asks showing a bit of concern for Jonathan's predicament.
"You could tell me anything you may know that could explain why Tinsworthy would contact my husband all these years later. The police can't tell us anything. The district attorney's office doesn't want anyone involved," Jennifer replies as they stand facing each other.
"What makes you confident I know anything?"
"You were his neighbor. Jonathan told me he was single. He lived alone all his life. I figured he may have confided in you about working for the district attorney and his experience as an intelligence officer."
"Robert Tinsworthy never confided in me. We stopped and talked whenever we met, but we were never friends. He was a nice man. I know that much. I am afraid I can't tell you anything that you want to know. I was asleep when he was killed. I didn't know about his death until I saw his picture in the newspaper the next morning."
"I understand you may be too frightened to come forward considering how he died, but if you do know anything Jonathan and I will help you. We can get you protection."
"I do not know anything," the older lady says staring at Jennifer nervously barely managing to conceal her fear. "Please just leave me alone," she says quietly as she turns her back to Jennifer.
"Thank you for talking to me. Our number is in the book," Jennifer replies feeling guilty she had upset the woman.
She stares at the older lady a few more moments before patting her on the shoulder gently. She opens the door and walks out of the house shutting the door on her way. Jennifer walks over to the Mercedes across the street and gets into the car. She starts the engine.
Meanwhile inside the neighbor's house Harry comes into the foyer from the living room.
"Are you satisfied?" the older woman asks staring at him with contempt.
"Yes, I am. I only hope for her sake Mrs. Jonathan Hart is satisfied."
"Why are you doing this to her husband? Jonathan Hart is going to have to answer questions about a man whom he had not been in contact with for years. How do you think they feel about that?" the old lady asks with anger in her voice.
"That is none of our business. Just like what we did to Tinsworthy is none of anyone else's business. Now if you continue to stick to your story you won't have to worry about your life being in danger, but if you dare to mention one word of your relationship with the man you're going to find your life at risk as well," Harry tells her in a firm tone as he shoots her a serious look.
Outside Jennifer is sitting in her car out of sight watching the elderly lady and the man argue in the foyer of the house. A few moments later Harry walks out of the house and heads toward his vehicle. He gets in and starts the engine. He begins to drive off heading away from Beverly Hills with Jennifer following him just close enough not to lose him.
Hart House
Jonathan stands in the kitchen talking to Lieutenant Grey on the telephone as Max stands by the table.
"Thank you, lieutenant," Jonathan replies before hanging up the receiver. "Lieutenant Grey hasn't seen Jennifer. The courthouse hasn't seen her," he says with worry turning to face Max.
"I wouldn't worry too much. Mrs. H can take care of herself," Max says reassuringly. "Why don't you eat your waffles before they get cold?"
"I don't have much time before I have to appear in court," Jonathan replies staring at his wristwatch. "I better get dressed. If the telephone rings, Max, I'll answer it. I just would have felt better if Jennifer had picked up when I called her on the mobile phone." He starts toward the door leading to the living room.
"Mr. H, what should I do about your waffles?" Max asks picking up the plate.
"I don't feel like eating. Jennifer and I will get something to eat after we leave the courthouse," Jonathan replies walking into the living room shutting the door behind him.
Max looks at the plate of waffles he holds in his hands before looking at Freeway who is staring at him with a look of pleading in his eyes.
"Listen, if you won't say a word I'll let you have a little of the waffles I cooked, Freeway," Max says looking down at the dog.
Freeway barks as he sits up. Max places the plate of waffles down on the floor. Freeway walks over to the plate and begins chewing on some of the waffles.
"Now remember to keep this just between the two of us or we'll both be in a doghouse," Max says as he watches the dog continue to eat.
Over twenty minutes later Jennifer is still following Harry. The man takes an exit onto Solano Avenue toward Academy Road. Jennifer is still only close enough behind to pursue him. She takes the exit onto the same avenue as well. They still continuing drive down Solano Avenue. After a while Harry turns left. Jennifer turns left just the same. After not even a mile the man turns right at his destination. On the right is the United States Court House. Jennifer slows down and brings the Mercedes to a stop across the way from the courthouse. She is stunned this is where Harry had been heading to. He gets out of the vehicle and walks toward the courthouse. Jennifer continues to watch the man she had never laid eyes on until today as he disappears into the building through one of the doors at the entrance. She is in complete shock finding it strange a killer would come to a courthouse.
United States Court House In Los Angeles
A short time later Jonathan is on the stand being asked questions by the prosecutor, Daniels. Max and Jennifer stand waiting anxiously outside the courtroom in the hall.
"Would you state your full name and occupation?" the prosecutor asks as he stands facing the jury and Jonathan.
"Jonathan Hart and I am the CEO for Hart Industries," Jonathan replies.
"What was your relationship with Robert Tinsworthy?"
"He was one of my first business associates soon after Hart Industries opened. My company installed a computer at an Air Force where he worked as an intelligence officer."
"You were in the Navy?"
"Yes."
"How well did you know the deceased?"
"I hardly knew Tinsworthy. We only discussed our time in the military."
"You didn't have a close relationship with Robert Tinsworthy? For someone you say was only a business associate he called you out of all people the night he was killed. Can you explain that?" Daniels asks as he places his hands firmly on the stand.
"No."
"Tinsworthy worked for the DA's office, and you knew that," the prosecutor replies as he raises his voice a bit. He stares harshly at Jonathan.
"No, I didn't until Lieutenant Grey of the Los Angeles Police Department informed me the next day."
"Why were you contacted by the police? Why? I remind you I can have you put behind bars for showing contempt of court," the prosecutor says impatiently. "Now tell me the truth. How long have you been in touch with Robert Tinsworthy?"
"I was contacted by the police because my contact information was found in Tinsworthy's pocket. I haven't been in touch with him. I haven't heard or seen the man until he left a message on my answering machine."
"You're lying! You knew about the illegal activity Tinsworthy was committing! That is why he left you a message on the answering machine, Mr. Hart. I have a witness who testified yesterday afternoon that not only did she see you come to his place of residence on a weekly basis, but Tinsworthy confessed. He confessed you knew he turned against the DA's office by stealing classified information: classified information from the Air Force. The district attorney's office has been investigating top secrets being stolen where the deceased was once an intelligence officer. We asked him to look into the matter. Our office discovered that the two of you had been in touch just weeks before he was murdered. We intended to have him appear in court the day he was found dead," Daniels says barely managing to control his temper.
Jonathan is in complete shock at the revelation that Tinsworthy had been stealing top secrets from the Air Force.
"Now do you care to come clean and confess you knew about Tinsworthy turning his back on his career as an intelligence officer?"
Jonathan sighs before replying nervously. "I plead the fifth amendment. I refuse to answer on the grounds it could incriminate me."
The prosecutor glares at Jonathan showing a look of disgust. Jonathan looks at him with fear as he turns around in his chair wondering what is going to happen to him.
Meanwhile outside the hall Jennifer and Max had been listening in. They turn to face each other stunned.
Shortly after Jennifer, Jonathan, and Max come walking out of the courthouse. Jonathan and Jennifer are holding hands as Max is walking behind him.
"Darling, I thought that prosecutor was going to have you thrown into jail," Jennifer says nervously.
"So did I, Mr. H," Max replies. "He sure gave you a hard time. I thought the justice system had respect for that fifth amendment."
"The grand jury often doesn't treat citizens fairly, Max," Jennifer says as they walk across the street where the Mercedes and Corniche are parked.
"That has been going on for years, Max," Jonathan tells him.
"No wonder you and Mrs. H were so afraid of you appearin' before the grand jury," Max says just as they approach the vehicles.
"Mrs. H and I are going to take the Mercedes. You drive the Corniche home," Jonathan replies as he and Jennifer turn around to face him.
Max nods as he walks over to the Corniche. Jonathan helps Jennifer into their Mercedes before getting into the driver's seat. Just as Jonathan starts the engine it is revealed that a bomb had been planted underneath the car. It is ticking which goes unnoticed by Jonathan and Jennifer as they drive off.
"It seems to me the prosecutor deliberately was asking questions he knew you couldn't answer," Jennifer says turning to her husband.
"It certainly looks that way, darling. First, you witness a man driving to the courthouse after leaving Tinsworthy's neighbor's house and now the prosecutor comes down hard on me: treating me as if I were a common criminal."
"All roads appear to lead to the DA's office and the prosecutor himself. Now we know why the neighbor was reluctant to speak to me. She was bribed by the prosecutor himself."
"Paid off by a dishonest prosecutor. Lieutenant Grey is not going to believe any of our theory this time," Jonathan replies as they approach a light.
The bomb continues ticking as the Harts are still seated inside their vehicle.
The light turns green, and Jonathan continues driving.
"I wonder what made Robert Tinsworthy decide to steal top secrets," Jennifer says as Jonathan turns the car in a different direction.
"Maybe Arnold can find the answer to that question. Hopefully he can find out anything that could give us a clue by checking out his electronics company," Jonathan replies as they head toward Hart Industries. They are heading toward the freeway. Jonathan looks down and sees the gas tank is almost out of gas.
"We are almost out of gas," Jonathan replies as they see a gas station on the left side of the road up ahead.
"Darling, could you roll down the windows? I feel like some fresh air," Jennifer says turning to her husband.
"So do I, darling," Jonathan replies rolling down the windows. "It is getting hot in here."
After a few moments of silence Jonathan and Jennifer hear the sound of the bomb ticking. They turn to face each other with a look of horror at realizing
a bomb had planted underneath their vehicle. Without wasting a second Jonathan pulls the Mercedes over to the side of the street. They throw open the doors and hurry out of the vehicle.
The Harts manage to get far away just as the bomb goes off. They rise to their feet once they know they are safe and look on in shock at the explosion completely destroying their
car.
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances. Jennifer and Jonathan embrace. They are relieved they managed to escape before they were killed.
"I'm glad we have insurance," Jonathan replies seriously as they continue to hold onto each other.
Jennifer smiles as she kisses him on the lips.
Hart House
Jonathan and Jennifer are in the living room after managing to get a ride home. Jonathan stands in front of the bar talking to Lieutenant Grey as Jennifer sits on one of the couches.
"Lieutenant Grey, I realize investigating Daniels puts you in an awkward position, but is there any way you can see about taking a look into his activities? We appreciate anything you can find out. Thank you," Jonathan says. He hangs up the receiver before turning to face his wife.
"I think I already know what the lieutenant said. Investigating the prosecutor would be like investigating President Reagan," Jennifer tells Jonathan.
"He did say something to that effect, darling," Jonathan replies taking a seat next to her.
"Without evidence he is helpless to take any action."
"He did say he will see if he can convince the state bar legal action should be taken," Jonathan says just as the doorbell rings.
Max walks into the room and heads toward the front door. Jonathan and Jennifer rise to their feet. Max opens the door to find Arnold standing outside. He walks into the foyer.
"Good afternoon, Max," Arnold says turning to him as he shuts the door. "Good afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Hart," he says walking over to them.
"Good afternoon, Arnold," Jennifer greets with a smile.
"Thanks for putting everything else aside to look into Tinsworthy Electronics," Jonathan replies as his employee takes a seat across from them. "What did you find out?" he asks as they retake their seat on the couch.
"Plenty, Mr. Hart," Arnold replies handing Jonathan the information he gathered on the company. "Tinsworthy was facing bankruptcy. He made investments that turned out to be bad investments," he says as Max stands behind the couch listening. Jonathan looks over the information. "He was forced to sell his company and was on the verge of losing his home."
"If only Tinsworthy had turned to me when he was in financial trouble," Jonathan says with a sigh. "In a way I'm not surprised. He always appeared to be a man with pride."
"That's not all. As you can see Tinsworthy was discharged from the Air Force."
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances.
"He was discharged from his position as an intelligence officer for misconduct," Jonathan reads aloud. "It was later proven he had been framed, but by the time he was proven innocent he had already started his electronics business."
"That certainly would explain his disdain for the military after being disgraced," Jennifer comments.
"If he was responsible for stealing classified information," Jonathan says turning to her. "Maybe Daniels was the one behind top secrets being stolen. It is a possibility he had Tinsworthy set up and he found out."
"After bribing his neighbor to say Tinsworthy had been in contact with you he definitely wouldn't be reluctant to go that far," Jennifer agrees.
"Arnold, I am going to keep this information," Jonathan says turning to face him.
"Certainly, Mr. Hart," Arnold replies with a smile. "Certainly," he says rising to his feet. "Good day, Mr. and Mrs. Hart. Good day, Max."
"Good day, Arnold," Jonathan replies as Arnold starts toward the door.
"Thanks, Max, but I can show myself out," Arnold says as Max starts his way toward the door.
Arnold approaches the door and walks out shutting it on his way out.
"Too bad Arnold ain't able to check out that scum of a prosecutor just like he was able to Tinsworthy," Max says. "I was plannin' on goin' to Katherine's tonight. She offered to cook me dinner, but I'll tell her I can't make it if you like, Mr. H."
"No, Max, there is no reason for you to stay around here. You can keep your dinner date with Katherine," Jonathan replies turning around to face him.
"You know you two never ate after that explosion. How about I fix you and Mrs. H some sandwiches?"
"Yes, I am hungry," Jennifer says.
"So am I, darling," Jonathan replies. "Two sandwiches it is," he says.
Max nods as he starts toward the kitchen.
"And some ice tea too, Max," Jennifer says to him as he stops at the kitchen door to face her.
"You got it, Mrs. H," Max replies opening the door to the kitchen. He walks into the room.
Jennifer looks at Jonathan who is deep in thought.
"Somehow we got to find a way to prove Daniels was responsible for not only bribery but murder as well," Jonathan says turning around to look directly at his wife.
"Well, there's always the station wagon, darling," Jennifer says turning to her husband with a smile.
"Following the prosecutor we would chance being accused of stalking. Let's go, darling," Jonathan replies with a smile.
Jonathan and Jennifer rise from the couch just as Max walks in with ice tea in two glasses.
"Where are you goin'?" he asks in surprise at Jonathan and Jennifer leaving before having their lunch.
"The courthouse," Jonathan replies as he and Jennifer walk out of the room hand in hand.
Max watches as they walk into the foyer and head out of the house after Jonathan shuts the front door.
"You ask a dumb question, you get a dumb answer," Max mumbles to himself.
United States Court House That Evening
Jonathan and Jennifer have been parked across from the courthouse in the station wagon for hours waiting for the prosecutor to make an appearance. Jonathan glances at his wristwatch. It is 5:20 PM.
"What time is it?" Jennifer asks noticing her husband glancing at his watch.
"5:20."
Just then one of the doors to the building opens, and the prosecutor walks out carrying his briefcase. He walks over to his car and opens the door. He places the briefcase on the passenger seat and gets into his vehicle before starting the engine. Daniels drives off as Jonathan and Jennifer watch. Jonathan waits before starting the engine and following after the man slowly. He keeps a distance so it won't be discovered they're on his tail. The station wagon is several cars behind the prosecutor's.
"Looks like he could be heading to pay someone off," Jonathan comments.
"If we could get our hands on the briefcase I don't think we would find paperwork."
They continue following the prosecutor until he comes to a stop in front of a high-rise apartment building in downtown Los Angeles. Jonathan brings the station wagon to a stop across the way. He and Jennifer see the man exit his car with his briefcase. Daniels walks into the building.
Jonathan and Jennifer get out of the station wagon. They head toward the building. Jonathan holds the door open for his wife as Jennifer walks in. He enters shutting the door quietly behind them. They see the prosecutor knocking on a door to an apartment. The Harts quickly dodge behind a corner cautious to keep themselves from being caught. The door opens, and Daniels enters the apartment. He shuts the door behind him. They exchange glances wondering how they are going to find out what is going on in the apartment. Jonathan just happens to notice the fire alarm on the wall beside him.
"Get ready to cover your ears," Jonathan says to Jennifer as he takes out a lighter from his pocket. He holds the lighter up high to the alarm waiting for the flame to trigger the alarm while Jennifer covers up her ears with her hands.
Instantly the alarm goes off making an unbearable ear-piercing sound. Jonathan shuts the lighter and places it inside his pocket. He places his hands over his ears. He and Jennifer quickly hurry into a broom closet in the hall. All of the tenants come rushing out of their apartment in a panic. The door to the apartment, that the Harts want to gain access to, flings open with Daniels and Harry hurrying toward the exit. They leave the door open.
Just as soon as the rest of the occupants have fled Jonathan opens the door to the closet. He and his wife hurry over to the apartment before they are caught. They rush into the apartment and see the briefcase sitting on the coffee table. Jonathan tries to open the case, but it is locked. Just as soon as he was about to turn to his wife to ask for her nail file Jonathan sees Jennifer handing him the file. He takes the file and manages to pry open the case. Just as they predicted the briefcase is full of five thousand dollar bills. They exchange glances. Jonathan shuts the briefcase.
They hurry out of the apartment. They see a backdoor leading to another way out of the building from the other side of the hall. Jonathan and Jennifer run to the door and dash out of the building. They hurry to get to their car before the firetruck arrives. The Harts cross the street and hurry toward the station wagon. All of the occupants are standing on the street far away waiting to find out if their apartment building is really on fire. Jonathan and Jennifer get into the car. Before Jennifer can shut her door all the way Jonathan steps on the gas speeding away just as a firetruck with its siren blazing drives right past them.
"I wonder what the penalty is for starting a false alarm," Jennifer says turning to Jonathan as he slows the car down now that they are away from the apartment building.
Jonathan turns and looks at her before returning his attention to the road up ahead.
Hart House Night
Jennifer is lying in bed while Jonathan sits on the edge talking on the telephone to Lieutenant Grey.
"I understand, lieutenant. Thanks for trying," Jonathan replies before hanging up the receiver. "Lieutenant Grey managed to find out from the fire department that the fire to Tinsworthy's house was deliberately set," he says turning around to face his wife. "He got in touch with the state bar. Unless sufficient evidence is gathered no action can be taken against Daniels. The department is still looking into the bomb planted under our car. Are your ears still ringing, darling?" Jonathan asks getting under the covers.
"No, they stopped ringing right before the lieutenant called. You know, darling, I've been thinking. Could your military connections find out anything about that classified information being stolen?" Jennifer asks as she and Jonathan lie back in bed together.
"Well, Hart Industries does have a division in federal services. Maybe some strings can be pulled. I'll see if I can find out anything tomorrow morning."
Just then the telephone rings. Jonathan reaches over to the table on his side and picks up the receiver.
"Jonathan Hart," he answers.
"Mr. Hart, this is Robert Tinsworthy's neighbor, Grace. I need to talk to you and your wife tomorrow. I decided to tell you the truth," she replies on the other end of the receiver. "Can we meet someplace secretly? I've been watched since he was killed."
"How about outside the museum in Hancock Park at noon?"
"I'll see you then, and I'll tell you everything," Grace replies before hanging up the receiver.
Jonathan hangs up the receiver.
"That was Tinsworthy's neighbor," Jonathan says turning to Jennifer. "She had a change of heart. She wants us to meet."
"Isn't it interesting how once people lie their conscience bothers them?"
"It wasn't an attack of conscience, darling. She claims she has been watched. Maybe Daniels didn't bribe her. Just maybe she was threatened," Jonathan says turning to face his wife.
"She did seem genuinely distraught when I tried to get her to open up this morning," Jennifer replies as she faces her husband.
"And you told me she was looking out her window after the fire. I say we give her the benefit of the doubt."
Jennifer smiles before moving closer to her husband. "If you are willing to give her the benefit of the doubt so am I. Darling, what would you do if I was stealing classified information?" she asks.
"What would I do?" Jonathan asks as he ponders. "Well, first off I wouldn't turn you in. Instead I would have you blindfolded, give you a cigar, and let you say your last words before having you shot," Jonathan says teasingly turning to her with a sly smile. "But before I would do all that I would be sure the guns were filled with blanks, darling," he adds as he leans over her.
Jennifer smiles as Jonathan kisses her on the lips. Jennifer closes her eyes. Jonathan reaches over and turns off the lamp.
"BANG!" Jonathan exclaims.
"JONATHAN!" Jennifer exclaims taken off guard.
Hancock Park The Next Day
Jonathan and Jennifer are walking along with Grace that afternoon in the park. They just listen allowing Grace to do the talking.
"Robert Tinsworthy wasn't just my neighbor as you guessed yesterday morning. Tinsworthy and I were very close," Grace tells the Harts who are stunned at what she just told them. "But we weren't just friends. He was my husband. After he was discharged he changed. He became a very bitter and angry man. Our marriage ended in divorce soon after."
"You must have loved him very much if you stayed near him," Jennifer replies touched by the woman's story.
"Yes, and he still loved me. We could be friends. We just couldn't be married to each other anymore. Once he lost his business he mellowed somewhat. He became depressed. After being forced out of the Air Force the business was all he had left. The Air Force and his company was his life. I loved him so much I didn't give up until his name was cleared. He had received a letter of apology, but by that time the damage had already been done to his soul and spirit."
"I'm sorry, Grace," Jennifer replies placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"Grace, did you love him enough to accept bribery?" Jonathan asks.
"No, Jonathan, I did not accept bribery. Daniels never even attempted to bribe me. He and that other man he hired to help him kill Robert threatened me. If I didn't lie they told me I would end up exactly like him. I was so terrified I was willing to do what they expected of me. Then after Jennifer came to see me I couldn't stop thinking about what I had done. I decided the truth needed to be told no matter what may happen to me."
“What about the Air Force handling their own investigation?” Jennifer asks.
“After months of investigating orders came from the top to try a different tactic. The general felt they had better luck of finding out who the culprit was if someone outside the military looked into the leak. He felt a prosecutor could do a better job if he worked with someone who was an intelligence officer.”
“Did the general recommend Robert?” Jonathan asks.
“The general whom he served under had retired. General Ames did know about the discharge and the frame-up so he suggested Robert work with Daniels.”
"Why was the fire started?"
"Robert had kept a diary. It mentioned all the top secrets he had stolen along with his relationship with Daniels. The day he was killed he came to see me. He confessed to me what he did and that the DA's office looked like they were onto him. I was horrified and shocked. I didn't realize he was that bitter that he would use his expertise as an intelligence officer to steal classified information. He had a feeling Daniels was going to kill him. After Robert was asked to work for him he found out that he had been abusing his power to take the law into his own hands for years. Robert never threatened him. He didn't want anything from him. He just wanted to hurt the Air Force like they hurt him. Robert said he couldn't bring himself to turn himself in. He needed time to think about it. I made it clear to him that if he didn't confess in a few weeks I was going to turn him in myself. You can see I loved him, but not enough to keep him from facing punishment," Grace replies solemnly.
"Who was he stealing classified information for?" Jennifer asks.
"I do not know. Some foreign men were paying him a fortune. He did say they were not from Russia or China. Robert told me they left the country soon after they paid him. I'm sure he had their names written in that diary. Oh, he mentioned the classified information had something to do with a new formula the Air Force invented."
"Strange, a fire would be started just to destroy a diary. All they had to do was take it with them," Jennifer says turning to Jonathan as they stop walking.
"I think the fire had more to do than hiding a crime," Jonathan replies.
"You mean they set the house on fire to stop us from investigating?"
"Yes, Tinsworthy was killed, and his body was disposed on the side of a street at night. Then after the police show up at the house the next morning the district attorney calls Lieutenant Grey up and orders him to stop investigating. Right before we show up a fire breaks out and then later that night I am served a subpoena. Then after we leave the courthouse our Mercedes goes up in flames thanks to a bomb planted. This has all the indications of stopping us from stumbling onto Daniels’ dirty secrets."
"Grace, you need to tell the state bar what you just told us," Jennifer says gently.
"If I do I'll be facing a penalty for perjury!" Grace exclaims.
"Once they hear the whole story I'm sure they'll be willing to go easy on you," Jonathan assures her.
"There must be another way without risking my life," Grace says before turning to look at her wristwatch. "Oh, my goodness! I better be going. I managed to give the hired killer the slip!" Grace exclaims with panic.
She dashes away before Jonathan and Jennifer can stop her. They chase after her worried something may happen to her. They run through the park pushing through the crowd of people. They approach the parking lot just as Grace rushes toward her car. Just as Grace is about to walk to her car another vehicle comes out of nowhere and heads toward her with the intention of running her down.
"GRACE, LOOK OUT!" Jonathan and Jennifer shout out in alarm as they hurry to come to her rescue. Just as the car is about to hit her Jonathan grabs her. They both plunge toward the ground to safety managing to get out of the path of the car.
The vehicle speeds away fleeing before anyone can get the license number and identify the driver. People come rushing
forward after witnessing the attempted hit-and-run including Jennifer.
"Are you hurt?" Jonathan asks as he and Grace rise to their feet.
"Other than some bruises I'm fine," Grace replies shaken up by almost being killed.
Jennifer runs up to them.
"Darling, are you all right?" Jennifer asks embracing Jonathan.
"I'm fine, darling," Jonathan replies. "We are both fine," he assures her wrapping his arms around her.
Hart House
Jonathan and Jennifer sit in the living room after lunch enjoying a glass of wine together.
"I wish Grace had agreed to stay with us rather than hiding out at a hotel," Jennifer says.
"Grace is a very independent and strong-willed woman. People who are strong-minded can't be persuaded to do anything they don't want to do," Jonathan replies taking a sip of his wine.
The telephone rings. Jonathan places his glass down and picks up the telephone receiver from where he is sitting.
"Jonathan Hart," he answers before listening to the person speaking on the other end of the line. He listens for a few moments. "I see. Well, thank you for looking into the matter for me. Goodbye," Jonathan says before hanging up the receiver with disappointment. "That was someone I know from federal services," he explains turning to his wife as he picks up his glass of wine.
"It is a matter of security so only those who handle security in the military can give out that kind of information," Jennifer guesses.
"Yes, same response as I got from the general I worked with when installing that computer for the Air Force. If we only knew what kind of formula they were working on and whom those men were that paid Tinsworthy a lot of money just maybe we could put Daniels and his accomplice behind bars," Jonathan replies taking a sip of wine.
"Darling, I just thought of something," Jennifer says putting her glass down. "What if we set up a trap for them?"
"We are dealing with a prosecutor. Chances are he is too clever to be set up especially since he knows about us looking into Tinsworthy's murder."
"What if we led them to believe they were turning on each other?" Jennifer asks.
Jonathan thinks a moment before looking up at his wife with a smile. "Yeah, turning on each other is the perfect set up."
Jennifer returns the smile as they raise their glass before continuing to sip the wine.
The Beverly Hilton
Grace is opening her suitcase in her hotel room when a loud knock comes at the door. She sighs before walking over to open the door. Once upon opening it she finds the prosecutor standing out in the corridor staring at her with a smirk.
"Grace, let me in. We need to talk," he says in a serious tone now changing his face to a look of anger.
"I have nothing to say to you! You can't threaten me anymore!" Grace exclaims.
"Let's talk about our business calmly, shall we?" he asks forcing himself into the room.
Grace sighs and shuts the door.
"Now you have nothing to fear if you take the first flight out of California," Daniels says calmly as he reaches into his jacket and takes out an airline ticket. "Now if you take the ticket you will never hear from me again, but if you don't I'll just have to see you get on that plane at the gate myself," he warns her as he hands her the ticket.
She takes the ticket and looks at it. "This ticket is to New York?" Grace asks in shock.
"That's right so I can rest peacefully at night without having to worry. I want you far away from California as possible. I would have gotten you a ticket out of the country if I was sure you have a passport. Now get your suitcase so I can get you on the plane on time. You wouldn't want to risk missing your flight, Grace."
"You're taking a chance considering you had me appear before the grand jury. What if someone sees us together?"
"That is a risk I'm willing to take. Since Jonathan Hart managed to save you from being a victim of a hit- and-run I certainly can't risk anyone finding out I had anything to do with it. I paid for the tickets under an assumed name."
"You know Robert Tinsworthy may have committed a serious crime, but at least he wasn't a cold-blooded killer like you are," Grace replies in disgust. "That man had honor and respect for the law for the longest time of his life. Being discharged from the Air Force and then losing his business just took a toll on him. He needed psychological help. If you had any feeling of a decent human being you may have seen to it he wasn't punished so severely."
"Considering Tinsworthy was your husband I am not at all surprised at your attitude. Sometimes things are beyond our control. If he had only not written down about me taking the law into my own hands he would still be alive. I was patient with him. I tried talking sense into him, but he just wouldn't hand over that diary," Daniels says before glancing at his watch. "Let's go. We can talk in my car if you want," he says firmly as he grabs her arm.
"Give me a few minutes to freshen up. I'll meet you in the lobby," Grace replies calmly managing to control her temper.
He looks at her for a few seconds before letting go of her arm. "I give you five minutes. If you don't show up by then I'll have to escort you out of the hotel myself," Daniels says heading toward the door. He opens the door and turns back to her. "Don't contact the police or the Harts because if you do I will be forced to hold you at gunpoint. Make things easier on yourself, Grace. Be smart for once. Leave things well enough alone, and we'll all be satisfied," he tells her shooting her a look he means every word he told her. He walks out and quietly shuts the door behind him.
Grace sighs as she looks at the ticket. Just then the door to another room opens. Jonathan and Jennifer walk in after overhearing the entire conversation.
"How was I?" Grace asks as she turns to them.
"You did fine," Jennifer assures her.
"I would have fallen for that line myself," Jonathan says with a smile. "You better grab your suitcase and head to the lobby."
"I hope everything goes as planned," Grace says nervously picking up her suitcase.
"Don't worry. Max will be right behind you. Just be sure Daniels sees you heading toward the gate and thinks you're getting on the plane before Max picks you up," Jennifer replies with a smile.
"We thought of everything so you don't need to worry, Grace," Jonathan says as he walks her toward the door. "Better get down to the lobby," he tells her holding the door open for her.
Grace nods and walks out with her suitcase. She heads down the corridor to the elevators. Jonathan shuts the door and walks over to the phone on the bed stand. He dials a number. After waiting for only a second his call is answered. "Grace is on her way down. Are you all set, Max?" Jonathan asks.
"All set, Mr. H," Max replies from the other end of the line. "Where are you and Mrs. H goin' while I am drivin' this cab?"
"We are going fishing," Jonathan replies with a smile.
"Huh?" Max asks with confusion.
"I'll explain later," Jonathan says before hanging up the receiver.
Outside the hotel Max watches from a distance in a taxicab from the driver's seat. Just then the door to the hotel opens, and the prosecutor comes walking out with Grace. They head toward his car which is parked next to the building. Max witnesses them getting in and starting to drive off. The vehicle heads down the street. Max starts the engine and follows behind.
A Bank In Los Angeles
Jonathan and Jennifer stand inside the bank talking to a teller.
"How can I help you?" the lady teller asks with a smile.
"I'm Jonathan Hart, and I would like to withdraw five thousand dollars from my account."
"May I see some identification please, sir?" she asks just as Jonathan takes out his wallet. He takes out his driver's license which he hands to her.
The teller takes his driver's license and looks over it before handing it back to Jonathan.
"Are you sure you want to take out this much money? It is a lot of cash to be carrying around with you," the teller replies with concern.
"Don't worry. This isn't the first time I had more than pocket money," Jonathan assures her with a smile.
"My husband is a wealthy businessman," Jennifer explains taking his hand.
"Wait a second. Do you own Hart Industries?"
"Yes, guilty," Jonathan replies.
Stunned that the famous millionaire is standing in front of her finds herself falling to the floor in a faint.
"Was it something I said?" Jonathan asks turning to his wife.
Jennifer shrugs as they exchange glances.
Los Angeles International Airport
An hour later Grace hurries from the airport and rushes over to Max who is still sitting in the taxi which is parked at the curb. Grace opens the door and gets into the backseat.
"How did it go?" Max asks.
"Just as the Harts planned it," Grace answers with a smile. "Let's go."
Max nods as he starts the engine. He starts to drive away from the airport.
Hart House That Night
Jonathan and Jennifer stand in front of the bar that night placing five thousand dollars into a briefcase. Jonathan picks up a plane ticket and a note which he places into the case before shutting it. Max is watching from behind.
"I don't get it, Mr. H. How is replacin' that briefcase with that much dough you got here gonna trap those guys?" Max asks baffled.
"It's called the double cross," Jonathan replies locking the briefcase. "We make each of them think they are turning against each other," he says turning around to face him. "I switch that briefcase we saw in the apartment with this one. Then I take that briefcase and make sure Daniels gets it. Only instead of just finding money, they each discover a threatening message along with a way one ticket to Australia."
"What if they each contact each other by phone and meet up?"
"Jonathan made it perfectly clear in the notes that no contact would be made if they value their life," Jennifer replies. "We set the plan into motion tomorrow morning."
"How are you goin' to make the switch?"
Jonathan and Jennifer turn to look at each other before turning to look at Max.
"I'm sorry I asked," Max replies with a sigh. "What do you want me to do?"
"Don't worry, Max. You won't have to make the switch," Jennifer replies with a smile.
"That's different. But if I ain't gonna make the switch how are you goin' to make it without gettin' caught?"
"You know, Max, you did such an outstanding job driving Grace today in the taxi that the owner didn't hesitate at all to agreeing to let you drive tomorrow," Jonathan says.
"Why do I get the feelin' I ain't gonna like the rest of what I am goin' to hear?" Max asks as a look of fear comes over his face.
Apartment Building In Downtown Los Angeles
The next morning Jonathan and Jennifer walk into the high-rise apartment building. They duck out of sight upon reaching apartment 12 A. They watch as they wait for Harry to leave his apartment. After only waiting a few seconds the door to the apartment opens, and Harry walks out shutting his door behind him. He heads toward the front of the building where he passes Jonathan and Jennifer hiding around a corner of the hall. They watch as he walks out of the building through the door. Jonathan and Jennifer head toward the apartment. Jonathan opens the door, and they walk in. Jonathan shuts the door. They head toward the bedroom where they find the briefcase with the five thousand dollars. Jonathan is about to approach the bed when they hear the door open. They rush toward the bathroom and hide. A few seconds later Harry walks into the room and heads toward his dresser where he left his key to his apartment.
The man picks up his key and turns around ready to head back out when he looks at the briefcase. He picks it up and places it under the bed for safekeeping. Harry heads out of the room. The door to the bathroom quietly opens, and the Harts stick their head out waiting to hear the sound of the door close. Within only a matter of seconds the door to the apartment closes. Jonathan and Jennifer walk out. Jennifer quietly shuts the door behind them. They turn to see the briefcase is gone from the bed only to see it just had been moved. Jonathan gets down on his hands and knees. He reaches down under the bed and picks up the briefcase. He hands Jennifer the case just as she hands him the other one. He takes the similar briefcase and places it underneath the bed exactly where the one they just took was.
They walk out of the room and make for the door. They stop in a panic when they hear the sound of the door being opened. Jonathan hands Jennifer the case which she hides behind her back. Before they can take any action the door opens, and an old maid walks in. She is stunned to see the Harts.
"You better have a good excuse for being in this apartment!" she exclaims giving them a harsh look.
"Uh, we're with the internal revenue service," Jonathan replies with a smile. "Just wanted to see if the tenant has been paying his taxes."
"Oh, yes, we got our briefcase right here," Jennifer says in a matter of fact manner holding up the case. "We're going door to door to be sure none of the occupants have been cheating Uncle Sam."
"Well, the owner of this apartment isn't here as you can see. Just leave me your card, and I'll be sure to let the apartment manager know you stopped by," the maid replies placing her hand out.
"We'll be back later this evening," Jonathan says. "My assistant and I still have other apartments to check out anyhow," he tells the woman as he and Jennifer head out of the apartment.
They walk into the foyer and sigh in relief after Jonathan shuts the door.
United States Court House
That afternoon around lunchtime Daniels comes walking out of the courthouse. He heads toward his car across the street. He gets in and starts the engine. The vehicle starts off heading away from the building. He turns left at the corner and heads down another street. Just as the man reaches the end of the street and is about to turn a corner a cab comes out of nowhere. The cab runs into the front of the vehicle preventing Daniels from going anywhere. A look of frustration comes over his face. He throws open the door and hurries over to the cab.
"Where in the world did you learn to drive, old man?" he answers barely managing to control his temper.
"You ain't sayin' this is is my fault, are you?" Max asks with annoyance as he gets out of the cab. "You know if you had put on your blinker which is a new invention none of this would have happened!" Max exclaims pointing a finger at him.
"I admit I made a mistake, but you are just as equally to blame! If you had been paying attention we wouldn't be standing here arguing! If this is the way you drive all the time I could report you to the cab company. I am in a hurry so let's stop quarreling! Would you kindly move your cab so I can leave?"
"Wait a second, buster!" Max exclaims losing his patience. "Just take a look at my cab! Do you know how much it is goin' to cost to have the front of my cab repainted?" he asks with frustration pointing to the few scratches on the bumper.
"What are you talking about you fool? Just get some paint and have the bumper repainted. It won't cost you that much. I'm not going to have my insurance company pay just to do a little paint job!" Daniels exclaims in shock.
Just as they continue arguing Jonathan and Jennifer walk out of their station wagon which is parked on the other side of the street out of sight. They approach the prosecutor's car. Jonathan quietly opens the passenger door. Jennifer hands him the briefcase. He takes it and places it on the passenger seat. He reaches into the pocket of his suit. Jonathan takes out an airplane ticket along with a note. He opens the briefcase as Jennifer watches Max and Daniels continuing bickering like grumpy old men. Jonathan places the ticket and note into the briefcase right on top of the cash in plain sight. He quietly shuts the briefcase. Jonathan then shuts the door. He turns and looks at Max. While Daniels is shouting at him Max carefully glances over at Jonathan who shoots him a wink. Jonathan and Jennifer head back to their car.
"Ok, ok have it your own way! Let's just give me your contact information and remember if I suffer an injury because of your lousy drivin' I'm suin' the pants off you, buster!" Max exclaims pointing his finger at him.
A Bank In Los Angeles
Harry pulls up in front of his bank later that afternoon. He turns off the engine and picks up the briefcase that Jonathan and Jennifer switched on him. The man is astounded when he opens the briefcase and finds not only five thousand dollars, but a one-way ticket along with a note inside. He reads the note quietly and a look of fear comes over his face! He shuts the briefcase and locks it. The man starts the engine and speeds away.
Meanwhile at the courthouse Daniels has just opened the briefcase to find the ticket and the note that Jonathan placed inside two hours ago. A look of alarm along with anger comes across his face. He starts the engine and speeds away from the building with Jonathan and Jennifer watching. Jonathan starts the engine to the station wagon and begins to follow him along with Max in the cab closely behind.
Los Angeles International Airport
Jonathan and Jennifer pull up to the curb in front of the airport at one of the terminals. Jonathan brings the station wagon to a stop. Max brings the cab to a stop as well behind the Harts’ car. Jonathan and Jennifer get out of their vehicle just as Max gets out of the cab.
"Max, call Lieutenant Grey. Only call him on our car phone," Jonathan says turning to him.
Max nods and walks over to their station wagon. Jonathan takes Jennifer by the hand as they start to walk into the terminal.
While Daniels is heading on his way to security to get his briefcase checked he is appalled to see Harry show up right behind him. Upon seeing him Harry is just as stunned. They walk straight up to each other.
"What are you doing here?" Daniels asks.
"I was just going to ask you the same thing," the other man replies just as he notices the briefcase. "Wait a minute. Did you find a one way-ticket out of the country along with a note in that briefcase?" he asks in a panic wondering if they both had been set up.
"Of course I did. You should know. You sent it to me!" Daniels exclaims with annoyance believing him to act like he doesn't know what he is talking about. "I had to come up with a good excuse for why I was leaving my position here for Australia for several weeks! I hope you are going to keep your end of the bargain! I don't tolerate threats!" he exclaims just as he notices the briefcase. He stops and thinks suddenly coming to the realization they both had been set up. "Wait a minute. Did you say a one way-ticket and a note?! Was there five thousand dollars in that briefcase?"
"Yes, let me see your ticket!" Harry orders getting even more alarmed. He and Daniels take our their airline ticket which they show to each other.
"The Harts switched our cases!" they exclaim horrified as they look at each other in shock.
"I think that's only fair considering you blew up our car," Jennifer says with a smile as she and Jonathan are approaching them.
The prosecutor and his accomplice take off hurrying as fast as possible to escape. Jonathan and Jennifer fast on their feet chase after them.
They find themselves pushing and shoving around the passengers and employees. Soon up ahead they find themselves running toward security. Several security guards try to stop the men the Harts are chasing, but they resist. Instead they continue to run with the guards running after them.
Jonathan and Jennifer are chasing them through the terminal as Daniels and Harry are hurrying toward their gate. They reach the escalators. The men run up one of them pushing people out of their way rudely to get away from the Harts. Jonathan and Jennifer take the same escalator. They too are forced to push their way through the crowd of people.
Once they reach the top the bad guys rush off. They look up above for their gate number. Jonathan and Jennifer are slowly catching up to them.
"Jonathan, do you have any idea what gate they are running to?" Jennifer asks trying to catch her breath.
"Gate 15," Jonathan replies reluctantly.
"15?!" Jennifer exclaims knowing they have a long way to run.
After only a few moments more of chasing after the two men Jennifer's eyes come upon a golf cart. Without saying a word Jennifer hops on the cart.
"Jonathan!" Jennifer shouts out to her husband who is still running.
He stops and turns to see his wife sitting at the wheel at the golf cart. Jonathan hurries over and hops on. Jennifer turns the wheel and begins driving the cart now with the intention of catching up to the two men they have been chasing. She drives the golf cart with all the speed it has. Suddenly she finds herself running the cart into people forcing them to get out of her path. Passengers drop their luggage in a panic upon seeing Jennifer. After a few more minutes of causing chaos and disruption Jonathan turns to see security guards chasing after them.
"This is security. We may need back up!" one of the guards exclaims into his walkie-talkie.
"I hope we can catch them before they get on the plane," Jennifer says with concern.
"I hope we don't get arrested," Jonathan replies turning to face his wife as he holds on.
Just then Daniels and Harry notice Jennifer is coming after them in the golf cart. They stop before turning around and running in the opposite direction.
"Well, two can play this game!" Jennifer exclaims getting annoyed with them. She manages to turn the cart around causing more confusion.
Just as she turns the cart around a pilot in his uniform is walking toward a gate with a cup of coffee in his hand. Before he can react Jennifer knocks him down causing him to drop the coffee which spills all over his uniform.
"I'm sorry! Send the drying clean bill to Hart Industries!" Jonathan shouts out to the pilot who is boiling with anger.
Just as Jennifer is chasing the men in the opposite direction the security guards have turned around as well. They are running after the Harts in the other direction now.
As the chase continues they approach a janitor who is finishing up mopping up the floor. The janitor turns around just in time to see them coming towards him.
"Stop! I've just mopped the floor! It's wet! " he shouts out to them. He has no sooner gotten those words out when the golf cart comes rushing toward him. The janitor loses his balance and falls to the ground along with his mop.
The terminal is so crowded Jennifer is forced to sway the golf cart to get around the people. By now the men have managed to get ahead of them. Soon as the Harts come upon another gate an agent is giving a couple directions. They look up and see Jonathan and Jennifer approaching them. They barely get out of the way before being knocked down.
An old lady is walking towards them with her cane. Jennifer notices her and brings the golf cart to a halt. The lady walks on past. Jennifer continues driving the golf cart.
They approach the next gate when a group of foreign passengers is chatting in their native language. The passengers have just got off the plane. They are so preoccupied talking they do not notice the golf cart coming in their direction. Jennifer sighs as she is forced to bring the cart to a stop again. After a few moments of waiting Jennifer starts driving once more. They look to see Daniels and Harry are getting further away from them.
Finally Jonathan and Jennifer manage to catch up to them again as they reach the moving walkways. The men see the Harts coming near them. They push and shove their way through the sea of people on one of the walkways. Jennifer drives the golf cart onto the walkway.
People stop dead in their tracks upon seeing Jennifer coming towards them.
"Excuse us! Coming through!" Jennifer shouts out.
A lot of people jump over the side to avoid being hit. Jennifer is now in the middle of the walkway where the rest of the crowd is remaining. A man is busy reading a newspaper. He looks up in time to see the golf cart coming towards him. He drops the newspaper and quickly jumps over the side. Jonathan reaches down and manages to pick up the newspaper. He throws it to the man who manages to catch the paper.
Now a porter with a handful of luggage is walking towards the golf cart. Before he can react the luggage falls to the ground flying everywhere. The porter quickly jumps over the side. As Jennifer continues driving some of the luggage falls over the golf cart.
"I've heard of falling rain, but I have never heard of falling luggage," Jonathan comments turning to Jennifer.
By now Daniels and Harry have reached the end of the walkway. They approach another walkway and get on. Like before the men push and shove their way through. Jennifer has just driven the golf cart off the walkway and is now driving it to the other one.
Soon after they reach where construction is being done in the terminal. A sign reads, "Construction going on. Restricted area." The bad guys ignore the sign and run right through where construction is going on. Jonathan and Jennifer are catching up to them again.
The construction crew is up on the platform. Plastic is up on the wall. Several of the men are standing on ladders painting. The crew is so busy they are not aware of what is happening. The guys come charging past the painters hitting the platform. The painters turn around and see the situation as the golf cart is approaching. Three men are standing out of the way of construction looking over the blueprints. One man, who is overseeing the project, turns to the criminals.
"This is a restricted area! Construction is going on here! Didn't you read the sign!?" he yells out to them with exasperation.
Just then Jennifer comes rushing toward the painters. They are about to yell out to her just as the golf cart knocks the ladders down causing the painters to hang on for life on the platform. The cans of paint come crashing down spilling paint everywhere. Some of the paint splashes onto the windshield of the golf cart. The construction manager yells out to Jennifer.
"STOP!" he exclaims as he stands out waving his hands.
He jumps out of the way as the golf cart passes by him. He shakes his head in disbelief. Just then the golf cart is coming upon the men examining the blueprints. They look up to see Jennifer come rushing towards them. Before they jump out of the way Jennifer charges towards the men. She knocks them and the blueprints to the ground.
Once more Daniels and Harry are ahead of the Harts as Jennifer drives right out of the restricted area. Once more Jennifer is swaying in and around passengers and staff. Two female stewardesses are talking to each other. They turn just in time to see the golf cart coming towards their direction. They jump out of the way as Jennifer manages to avoid running into them.
All of a sudden a middle-aged woman, who is carrying her dog in a carrier, notices Jennifer. She raises the carrier above her head and jumps out of the way just as the Harts drive past her. The dog managed to get the cage open and jumps out. The dog chases after the Harts as the owner hurries to catch up to her pet. Jonathan hears barking from behind. He turns his head around to see the dog chasing after them.
"We have an admirer chasing after us, darling," Jonathan says turning to his wife.
He has no sooner said those words when the dog leaps onto the golf cart. She jumps onto Jennifer's lap causing her to be distracted. The cute dog barks wanting Jennifer's attention. Jonathan reaches over to pick her up just as his wife is about to lose control of the wheel.
"Nice dog," Jonathan replies gently petting the animal. "Be a good girl and get along now," he says placing the dog down on the ground as Jennifer brings the golf cart to a stop.
They watch the dog look at them for a few moments before turning around and running back to her owner who is catching up. Jennifer grabs the wheel again and returns to driving the golf cart. Being forced to stop because the dog has worked to the bad guys' advantage. They are now disappearing out of sight as Jennifer tries her best to catch up. She sways in and around the people.
A few minutes later they reach other elevators and escalators. Daniels and Harry are starting to walk down one of the escalators. The Harts catch up to them.
"There they are, darling!" Jonathan exclaims pointing them out to his wife who is looking over the terminal.
Upon hearing Jonathan's voice the men begin running. They are pushing and shoving their way through the crowd. Jennifer turns the golf cart around and drives it toward the elevators. They hear a ding as one of the elevators opens with a group of people getting off. It is now empty. Without wasting a second Jennifer drives the golf cart onto the elevator. Jonathan gets off and presses a button. He gets back on when another group of people walks over to the elevator.
"I'm sorry. This elevator is for golf carts only," Jonathan says as the doors close with a sound of a ding.
A few seconds later the elevator opens on another level with a sound of ding. Jennifer drives the golf cart out of the elevator. She sees a sign above up that reads," Baggage Claim." She doesn't see the men anywhere but decides baggage claim is as good as place to look as any other. Just as Jennifer drives the golf cart toward that direction the pilot, that she knocked down earlier, is walking down the escalator wearing a new uniform. He is carrying another fresh cup of coffee. Just as he steps off he notices them. Before he can escape Jennifer knocks him down again spilling coffee all over his clothing.
"Sorry, I'll double the bill!" Jonathan shouts out to him with a look of embarrassment.
Just as Jennifer drives into baggage claim Daniels and Harry see the Harts. Jonathan is standing up looking out at them. Jennifer brings the golf cart just about right up to the men before bringing it to a stop. Jonathan jumps out and lands on Daniels knocking them both to the ground along with the briefcase. They engage in a fistfight much to the shock of the passengers who are waiting for their luggage.
Jennifer turns to see a wheelchair assistant walking an empty wheelchair out of the area. She rushes up to him.
"Let me borrow this," she says as she takes the wheelchair. She turns it around and hurls it toward Harry who is trying to find a place to run to. A look of shock comes across his face as the wheelchair comes straight towards him. He turns around and tries to make a break for it when the wheelchair hits him causing him to lose his balance. The defeated man goes flying onto the carousel on his back. He loses consciousness.
Just then the carousel starts running. He is spinning around as the luggage starts to come through the conveyor belt. Jonathan is still trying to fight off the other bad guy. Daniels holds a firm and tight grip around Jonathan's neck as he is trying to choke him. They are standing in front of the carousel where passengers are picking up their luggage. Jennifer watches helplessly. Jonathan motions with his hand toward the briefcase on the ground next to her. She picks it up and walks up to Daniels. She knocks him over the head causing him to fall to the ground.
Jonathan reaches down and grabs hold of him by the shirt. He slaps him hard across the face. Jonathan then proceeds to turn his enemy around by the arm. He shoves him toward the carousel with all his strength. Daniels falls backward on the side and lands on the carousel. The impact renders him unconscious.
Jennifer rushes to her husband's side. The other man is coming through when a woman, in her mid-fifties, is reaching over to pick up a big suitcase. She accidentally knocks him over the head with her suitcase. He is again rendered unconscious. The Harts have witnessed the incident. Jennifer places a hand over her mouth. She chuckles finding what happened very amusing considering the woman had no way of knowing Harry is a criminal.
"Thank you, madam," Jonathan replies turning to her with a smile. "You saved me the trouble," he says as he straightens his tie and jacket.
Jennifer and Jonathan are standing watching the two men going around in circles as the carousel is spinning.
"I know now what that phrase means, darling," Jonathan says turning to his wife.
"What phrase?" Jennifer asks looking up at him.
"Had a lot of baggage," Jonathan replies with a smile unable to help himself.
Jennifer returns her attention to Daniels and Harry still spinning around before looking up at her husband.
"I don't know, darling. I think they look right at home there," she says with a smile.
They burst out laughing as they place their arms around each other's neck. Lieutenant Grey, two of his men, security guards, and Max walk into baggage claim. Jonathan reaches over and kisses Jennifer on the lips. Jennifer smiles gayly as Jonathan continues kissing her while the lieutenant, the officers, guards, and Max walk over to them.
Hart House Night
That night Jennifer is sitting at the desk typing away on the typewriter. She finishes her latest writing assignment. She sighs in relief. Just then Jonathan walks into the foyer from the stairs carrying something big which is wrapped up in wrapping paper with a ribbon on it. Jennifer is so busy checking over what she wrote she doesn’t notice her husband. Jonathan quietly places the surprise down gently against a couch. He quietly walks over to her when Freeway, who is lying down asleep, notices him. He sits up wagging his tail. Jonathan motions to the dog to be silent. Instead Freeway barks excitedly just as Jonathan approaches Jennifer.
“Freeway!” Jonathan exclaims with some annoyance. “How would you like someone to sneak up on your loved one?”
“Darling, what are you doing?” Jennifer asks turning to Jonathan as he bends down to kiss her on the lips.
“I wanted to surprise you with a kiss,” Jonathan replies with a smile. “And a gift,” he adds as he gestures toward the wrapped item.
“Oh, Jonathan, you shouldn’t have!” Jennifer exclaims with a smile. “You’re spoiling me too much,” she says rising from her chair.
Jonathan takes her by the hand and leads her to the couch where he gently places her down to take a seat.
“Actually I’ve had this surprise stored up in the bedroom. I was going to give it to you as your birthday present, but I forgot about it,” Jonathan says picking up the surprise. He hands the gift to her. “Max!” he shouts.
Max walks into the room.
“Yeah?”
“I thought you would like to watch Jennifer open her gift,” Jonathan replies turning to look up at him.
“Little early for Christmas, ain’t it?” Max asks as Jennifer starts to tear the wrapping paper off.
“It’s Jonathan’s birthday present to me,” Jennifer explains.
Max turns to look at Jonathan.
“Mr. H, if you keep this up you ain’t gonna have anythin’ to buy her for Christmas,” he says in disbelief.
“No, what Jennifer meant was this is a present I had purchased for her which I forgot about. I got it in Paris while we were on our anniversary,” Jonathan replies taking a seat on the ottoman across from his wife.
Jennifer finishes unwrapping her gift. She is stunned to see a Mona Lisa painting with her likeness around the eyes and smile in an 11x 14 picture frame.
“Wow! Now that is what I call a paintin’!” Max exclaims with astonishment admiring the gift.
“Max, you have such an appreciation for such a true artist,” Jonathan replies impressed.
Jennifer is looking over the painting not sure what to make of it. Her reaction is definitely not one of delight.
“What do you think, darling?” Jonathan asks with a smile anxious to hear Jennifer’s thoughts.
“Well, I can’t put it into words!” Jennifer exclaims turning to Jonathan managing to fake a smile. “It is so so-“ she says struggling to find the words.
“Flatterin’?” Max suggests.
“Oh, this painting is flattering for sure. How did you manage to get a Mona Lisa with my likeness around the eyes and smile?”
“Remember when we took a walk along The Seine the second week of our stay and we saw those sketch artists painting? I came back when you were taking a siesta to have an artist design the Mona Lisa in your likeness much as possible,” Jonathan replies. He reaches over to kiss her on the lips. “You had been working on your article ever since we got back. How about we both go up to bed, darling?”
“That is the best idea you’ve had tonight,” Jennifer replies thinking the painting was the worst. “You go on up, darling. I’m just going to have Max hang up the sketch,” she says.
Jonathan smiles and walks out of the living room. He starts to head up the stairs in the foyer while Jennifer watches. Just as he disappears out of sight Max turns to her.
“Max, this painting makes the answering machine look like the perfect gift,” Jennifer says turning to him rolling her eyes. “He had a sketch artist paint a Mona Lisa with my likeness?!! It looks like it was designed for a toothpaste commercial.”
“You know what they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” Max points out.
“Well, I’m not flattered,” Jennifer replies rising from the couch. “I’m only glad da Vinci isn’t alive to see that sketch,” she says as she comes face to face with Max.
“What should I do with the sketch?”
Jennifer thinks before picking it up.
“Happy birthday,” Jennifer replies handing him the painting.
“But, Mrs. H, it ain’t my birthday present!” Max exclaims as she starts out of the room.
Jennifer stops and turns to look at him.
“Count your blessings, Max,” Jennifer says before glancing over the sketch once more before it disappears out of her sight. "Au revoir!” she says in a French accent.
Jennifer walks into the foyer and heads up the stairs for bed. Max watches her until she opens the door to the bedroom and walks in shutting the door behind her. He shrugs and turns the painting around.
“What do you think,Freeway?” he asks the dog who is sitting on the floor by his feet.
Freeway takes one look at the sketch and barks before running out of the room.
“What’s the matter? Doesn’t anyone besides Mr. H appreciate true art?” Max wonders out loud shocked that besides from Jonathan and himself no one else in
the household likes it. “Oh, well, I think this sketch will look good in my room!” he exclaims with a wide smile as he holds the painting back admiring it. “Now this to me is the genuine Mona
Lisa!” he exclaims proudly.
