Jerad’s Galleria Of Grand Jewels On Rodeo Drive Night
Late one night, someone is standing behind a counter almost surrounded in darkness in the jewelry store. The unknown person is pacing back and forth. The telephone rings. The person immediately picks up the telephone receiver.
“I’m glad you got my note,” the unknown person with a male voice says into the receiver. “No, I don’t know what happened with the pearls. Fortunately, the genuine one was misplaced. We’ll have to move fast. An appraiser is coming in tomorrow to examine it. We came this far. You and I can’t risk an expert exposing us. Yes, it’s no fault of your own the real pearls were lost. Is the hotel to your satisfaction? Good. No, I haven’t placed the fake pearls on display just yet. I have them on the counter as we speak.
Now, here’s the plan: I want you to stage a robbery tomorrow. You’re to barge in asking the necklace to be handed over to you. Here’s where the genius part of my plan fits in: you’re going to be dressed up in a Santa Claus costume.
Yes, I thought you would approve. It’s fitting since it’s the Christmas season. Soon as you leave, you’re to dispose of the costume somewhere safe once you’re out of sight. The guard won’t stop us from carrying out our scheme. Shoot him. Only be sure just to give him a flesh wound. Murder will only happen if something goes wrong. Then I suggest you see to it you don’t get caught. There are a lot of Santa Clauses here on Rodeo Drive. Plant the necklace in the costume of one of them. Why would the police suspect? Yes, but shoplifting isn’t the only method of stealing. The authorities won’t notice the difference. The motive? Well, gambling is a good enough reason to steal, especially when you’re over your head in debt,” the man says with a chuckle. “Do you have any other concerns? Then get a goodnight’s sleep. Santa needs it to help himself to his own Christmas present this year. Goodnight.”
The unknown man hangs up the receiver. He turns around and bends down to pick up a jewelry case. The case is opened to reveal a beautiful pearl necklace.
“Yes, gambling is a perfect motive for stealing a valuable piece of jewelry,” the man says in a devious voice, looking at the necklace. “Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to you, Santa!” he laughs as he places the case back down.
“Getting my hands on money will be the best Christmas present I ever received in my life. Luck is finally going my way at last.”
The man walks away from the counter. Sounds of footsteps can be heard as the necklace can still be seen from its place on the counter above the other beautiful jewels.
Hart House The Next Morning
Jonathan and Jennifer walk into the kitchen through the door leading to the living room. Max is standing by the oven, waiting for the Harts’ breakfast to finish cooking.
“Good morning, Max,” Jennifer says.
“Good mornin’, Mrs. H,” Max replies, looking up at her with a smile.
“What’s for breakfast?” Jonathan asks as they walk over.
“Now, I ain’t goin’ to tell you. It is a surprise. Sit down. Breakfast will be ready in a minute,” Max says, returning his eyes to the oven. “Coffee is already on the table.”
Jonathan and Jennifer walking over to the table, take their seats. Iced coffee is on the table in mugs.
“Iced coffee for breakfast?” Jonathan asks, picking up his cup. “What happened to decaf coffee?” he asks as he turns to Max.
“Iced coffee has not only caffeine but calories as well,” Jennifer says, turning to Max. “There are exactly 67 calories in this iced coffee.”
“It goes with my surprise breakfast,” Max replies, turning to look at Jennifer. “Humor me.”
Jennifer turns to look at Jonathan. Jonathan shrugs his shoulders as a response. Max walks over to them with cinnamon rolls. He places them on Jennifer’s plate first.
“Max!” Jennifer exclaims in shock.
“Now, humor him, darling,” Jonathan says, holding up his left hand. He stares at his wife with a devious smile.
“Fine. Just don’t complain when we walk an extra mile this morning,” Jennifer replies with disappointment.
“I’m not complaining,” Jonathan says as he picks up his silverware.
Jennifer picks up her silverware as she continues to stare at the unhealthy breakfast in front of her. She places a napkin on her lap.
“Hmm, these are the best cinnamon rolls I ever tasted,” Jonathan replies, chewing a cinnamon roll.
“Thank you, Mr. H,” Max says with a smile.
Jonathan looks over at Jennifer, who is giving her husband a look of disapproval. He smiles.
Freeway is by Max’s feet. He sits up and barks.
“Freeway, I will not have another member of this household eating calories,” Jennifer insists, looking at their dog.
Freeway barks as he turns to her.
“No, Freeway,” Jennifer says, raising her voice a little.
Freeway turns to face Max and barks.
“No, Freeway. You heard your mommy. Don’t try your mistreated doggy act on me,” Max replies in a firm tone.
Freeway walks over to his dog bed. He crawls into his bed and cuddles up. Jennifer sighs as she picks up her iced coffee. She looks at it before she reluctantly sips a little of the coffee.
“You know, darling, Christmas is only a few weeks away,” Jennifer says, turning to face Jonathan. “We really should start putting up our tree soon. I am expecting to hear from Angelina on when she is flying in. I’m really looking forward to spending Christmas with her! I only wish dad would fly in from Maryland!”
“We’ll put up our tree tonight. I’m going to Rodeo Drive to do some shopping,” Jonathan replies, facing Jennifer.
“Would you like me to come along? I have planned to go to Strickland to do some Christmas shopping of my own," Jennifer says with a smile.
“Sure, I’ll go do my own shopping alone while you look around in Strickland."
"Shopping is so much more fun when you have someone you love nearby," Jennifer replies with a wink.
Jonathan gives his wife a warm smile before shooting her a wink.
The telephone on the counter by the door rings. Max walks over to the phone and picks up the receiver.
“Hart Residence,” Max says. He listens to the person on the other end of the line. “Sure, she and Mr. H are havin’ breakfast as we speak. Hold on a second,” Max replies. He picks up the telephone and walks over to the table. “You have a call, Mrs. H,” Max says with a smile.
“I wasn’t expecting Angelina to call so soon,” Jennifer replies in surprise.
“It ain’t your niece. It’s your dad,” Max tells Jennifer as he hands her the receiver. He places the telephone down on the table.
“Hello, dad. I just mentioned you to Jonathan,” Jennifer says, warmly as she speaks into the receiver. “What are your plans for Christmas?” she asks, listening to her father’s part of the conversation on the end of the other line. “You are? I told Jonathan I wish you would come to spend Christmas with us. No, it’s no trouble at all. I’ll have Max get the guest house all ready. When are you flying in? Tomorrow? No, tomorrow isn’t too soon at all. What time is your flight? Jonathan and I will pick you up at the airport. We'll meet you at the gate. See you soon,” Jennifer replies with enthusiasm. She hangs up the receiver. “How about that?” Jennifer asks as she turns to Jonathan. “Dad is flying in from Maryland to spend Christmas with us,” she tells him as Max picks up the telephone.
“Well, Christmas is the season for surprises, darling,” Jonathan replies with a smile, happy that Steven will be flying in to spend Christmas with them. “How long will Steven be staying?”
“Dad will be staying until after New Year's. Oh, we got plenty of things to do before he arrives. I better purchase some new bed sheets for the guest house. We haven’t had company stay there in a long time.” Jennifer glances at her wristwatch. “Oh, it is almost ten o'clock,” she says in surprise at how late in the morning it is. “Are you ready to go, darling?” she asks, placing her napkin on the table.
“Sure, why not?” Jonathan asks, taking the last sip of his iced coffee.
Jonathan and Jennifer rise to their feet. They wrap their arms around each other as they head toward the door leading to the living room.
Rodeo Drive In Beverly Hills
The Harts’ Corniche pulls up to Strickland Plaza. It is a famous and popular shopping mall that resembles the popular Galleria in Dallas, Texas. Jonathan pulls the vehicle to a stop at the curb. Jennifer, opening her door, gets out of the car.
“I’ll meet you at the ice-skating rink in an hour, darling,” Jennifer says, turning to face her husband with a smile. She reaches over and kisses Jonathan on the lips.
“Don’t buy out the stores now. It is the Christmas season. Let’s remember to stay in the spirit of the holiday by leaving enough merchandise for the rest of the customers,” Jonathan replies in a joking manner as he smiles at his wife.
Jennifer laughs and shoots her a husband a wink. She shuts the door and walks over to the plaza. Jonathan drives off, leaving his wife to shop on her own while he heads down the street to attend to his errand in Beverly Hills. Jennifer is approaching a man in a Santa costume, who is ringing a bell. He stands in front of the entrance. A Salvation Army kettle is by his side.
“Ho, ho! Merry Christmas!” he exclaims in a jolly voice as he greets Jennifer.
“Merry Christmas,” Jennifer replies with a smile reaching into her purse. She takes out some money which she places in his kettle.
“Thank you!” the Santa Claus says, grateful for Jennifer’s generosity.
Jennifer responds by giving the man a warm smile. She opens the door and heads into the mall.
Jonathan enters Jerad’s Galleria of Grand Jewels shortly after. An older gray-haired man is standing behind a counter, placing a new pearl necklace inside carefully. Some other jewelry with pearls is on display next to the necklace.
“I see you got some brand new jewelry since I've been in here last,” Jonathan says, approaching the counter.
“Oh, Jonathan, you took me by surprise,” the man replies, looking up at him.
“I’m sorry. I just couldn’t resist admiring the new pieces you have displayed,” Jonathan tells him as he looks at the pearl necklace.
“The necklace and the other pieces came in before we shut up the store last night,” the older gentleman says as he shuts the door. “I just hope they don’t get stolen,” he adds as he looks up at Jonathan. “These thefts may just force me out of business.”
“I read about the thefts in the paper shortly after they first occurred. I’m sorry your chain of stores across the country is being affected by shoplifting. Have the police uncovered any leads?”
“Not one clue. I have a guard on watch at all times. Somehow my valuable pieces get stolen under their watchful eye. A man is going to show up any minute now to appraise the new jewelry. Now, I suppose you are here to buy Jennifer a gift for Christmas?” the man asks with a smile. “And I’m guessing it is the necklace you haven’t been able to take your eyes off of since you entered my shop.”
Meanwhile, while Jonathan is at Jerad’s looking over the jewelry to purchase Jennifer as a present, Jennifer is attending to Christmas shopping of her
own. She is walking around Strickland Plaza, carrying some shopping packages. The mall is crowded with customers who are also purchasing gifts for the holiday.
Jennifer stops at one of the stores and looks at the merchandise displayed in the window.
She continues walking around. Jennifer, admiring the Christmas decorations, is approaching the tree. An older man, who is dressed in a Santa Claus costume, is sitting in a chair. He is taking a break from children who had been lining up all morning to sit on his lap. The man is seated next to the ice-skating rink. Jennifer stops. She watches some couples skating. She is smiling, thinking about how romantic ice-skating is. Jennifer continues watching the skaters for a minute. She decides to continue on with her shopping before meeting up with Jonathan. Just as she starts to turn in another direction, Jennifer glances over at the Santa Claus. She stops and turns to look at the man, thinking he looks familiar. Jennifer smiles upon realizing why she recognized him. She walks over to the Santa Claus, who has just removed his fake beard for the present.
“Gus!” Jennifer exclaims with a smile, approaching him. “What are you doing here?”
“Oh, hello, Jennifer! What does it look like? I’m dressed up as Santa,” Gus replies with a smile. “Santa is taking a break to feed his reindeer so you’ll have to come back in half an hour if you want to sit on my lap,” he tells her, jokingly.
“I don’t think Jonathan would approve of me sitting on a stranger’s lap even if you are a friend of Max’s,” Jennifer replies with a chuckle. “It’s been a while since we have seen you around. I notice you still got your sense of humor. So, what are you doing working at Strickland? Are you saving up to buy some presents?”
“I wish. The sad fact of the manner is I’m broke. I have a gambling problem, so I only took on the job to pay off my debts,” Gus tells Jennifer with a frown.
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Jennifer replies sympathetically. “If you needed money, Jonathan and I would have helped you out. Max never even said a word.”
“He was honoring my wishes. I don’t want anyone to know of my addiction. Even Strickland himself doesn’t know.”
“Gus, gambling is as you said is an addiction. It can be treated just like alcoholism.
“I know, but I’m a very private person. I gambled away my money. Now, it is time I pay the piper. There are consequences for my actions,” Gus insists, seriously.
Jennifer is about to say something reassuringly when an older gentleman approaches them.
“Gus, what are you doing?” he asks impatiently. “I hired you to wait on the children. It isn’t on your job description to be so friendly with the customers.” He turns to Jennifer. “I apologize if he is a nuisance.”
“Oh, Gus isn't a nuisance. We are acquaintances. He’s a friend of a friend,” Jennifer assures the uptight man.
“Jennifer Hart, this is Mr. Strickland,” Gus says, gesturing toward his employer.
“I’m glad to meet you, Mr. Strickland. My husband and I shop here occasionally. Jonathan says I could spend all day here,” Jennifer warmly tells Strickland.
“Thank you, Mrs. Hart! It is always an honor to have a respected member of society shopping at my plaza,” Mr. Strickland says, shaking Jennifer’s hand. He is warming up to her now that he knows she is the wife of Jonathan Hart. “I hope you have found your experience to your liking. What do you think of the decorations?”
“They are lovely. I don’t think I have seen a mall that has ever gotten into the spirit of Christmas the way you do. I can see why Strickland Plaza is referred to as the Galleria of Los Angeles.”
“I used to live in Texas. I always admired the Galleria, so I decided to open my own mall that closely resembles it. The owners and I are friends. He was flattered when I told him of my plans. I’m sorry, but I will have to ask you to please move along. Gus must get back to waiting on the children.”
“I understand. I just came up to Gus to get reacquainted. I won’t take up any more of his time.” Jennifer turns to Gus with a smile. “I’ll let you get back to work. Merry Christmas. We’ll tell Max you said hello.” She places a comforting hand on Gus’s shoulder and turns to Strickland with a smile before walking away.
Gus smiles and watches Jennifer head toward a store.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Strickland, but I was just taking a break,” Gus says, glancing up at Strickland. He places his beard back on.
“Gus, you are Strickland Plaza’s Santa Claus. You don’t have time for any breaks. Now is the third time I’ve had to tell you. You arrived late this morning on top of that. You’ve been arriving late since you started the job. I expect promptness from all of my employees. Now, this is your last day on the job, so I think you need to make the best of your last day as Santa,” Strickland replies calmly.
“But, Mr. Strickland, I really need the money. I promise I won’t take any more breaks and start coming into the store on time!” Gus exclaims in a panic.
“I’m sorry. I’m afraid I’ll have to let you go. I know it is the holiday season, but I really need to think about what is best for the reputation of the plaza. When it is closing time, come up to my office. I’ll give you your two-week notice.”
“I’m in financial trouble! I need the money! I’m broke!” Gus insists as tears come into his eyes.
“You are a nice man. However, you lack important qualities that an employee of any business requires. If you improve by the end of the day, just maybe I can get you a job at some other department store,” Strickland tells Gus gently.
Strickland walks away, leaving the man heartbroken. Gus, struggling to fight off tears sighs, wondering how he is going to find a job to pay for his financial problems. He manages a smile as children are in standing in line, waiting to get on his lap. A young girl rushes up to Gus and jumps up on his lap.
“Merry Christmas, Santa!” the girl exclaims with delight at sitting on his lap. She is smiling at him.
Gus smiles. Her Christmas greeting touches him. “Merry Christmas, young lady! What can Santa get you for Christmas this year?” he asks, placing an arm
around her shoulder. He is speaking in his warm voice and acting jolly.
Jerad’s Galleria of Grand Jewels
Jonathan is looking over the new pearl necklace in the shop. He is holding it in his hand as Jerad stands behind the counter.
“I can’t wait to see Jennifer’s face when I give her this necklace on Christmas,” Jonathan comments with a smile. “How much longer is the appraiser going to be? I told Jennifer I would meet her at the ice-skating rink in an hour,” he mentions, looking up at Jerad.
“He will be here any minute now, Jonathan,” Jerad replies. “I would like to keep this necklace locked up until he gets here just to be on the safe side,” he
says, taking the necklace.
“I know Jennifer is going to love the pearl necklace,” Jonathan says as Jerad places the pearl necklace carefully into the counter.
Jerad is about to lock the counter. All of a sudden, a man who is wearing a Santa Claus costume, barges into the shop. He walks up to the counter.
“I want to see the necklace,” the man tells Jerad firmly.
“This gentleman has already shown his interest in the necklace. I do have some pieces that match,” Jerad says with a smile.
“No! I want the necklace! Hand it over!” the stranger orders. He takes out a gun.
The guard walks up to the unknown man wearing the Santa Claus costume. He is aiming a gun at his back.
“Put the gun down!” the guard demands.
The man puts the gun down. He stands still just as the guard takes out his handcuffs. Jerad is about to pick up the telephone. The stranger hits the guard in the face with his fist. The guard falls to the floor, along with his gun and handcuffs. Jonathan is about to shove his fist at the stranger when he takes him off guard. The man grabs hold of Jonathan by the throat. He swings him around. The man takes his hand off of Jonathan’s throat and pushes him toward a table displaying jewelry for sale. The jewels are covered up by glass.
Jonathan goes flying onto the table on his back. All of the jewelry comes crashing down along with the table. Jonathan is knocked out by the attack. Jerad
is alarmed and shocked at what just happened. He abruptly hangs up the receiver just as the stranger picks up the guard’s gun. He aims his weapon at the owner.
“Now, hand me over the necklace!!!” the man demands, raising his voice. He is now angry and impatient.
Jerad nods. He wastes not a moment in getting the necklace out of the counter. He is about to place the case down when the man grabs the jewelry. The thief aims his gun at the guard who is coming through. He shoots him in the arm. The guard, wincing in pain holds onto his arm, covering up the wound. The thief hurries toward the door. He opens the door just as Jerad sounds the burglar alarm. The burglar dashes away from the shop. Jonathan is slowly coming through as the alarm continues ringing throughout the galleria.
“Are you hurt?” Jerad asks with concern as he walks over to Jonathan.
“I’m fine,” Jonathan replies, rising to his feet, carefully with Jerad’s assistance. He hurries out of the shop.
Jerad turns to see his guard rising to his feet as he is still wincing in pain. He picks up the telephone receiver and dials a number. “I’ll get you some medical attention right away.”
Jonathan is hurrying after the thief in the busy district of Rodeo Drive. Pedestrians have already been made aware of what has happened. The alarm can still be heard throughout the street. People have stopped walking. They are watching as Jonathan chases after the thief. Jonathan and the man are running through the crowded two-mile long street. They reach where there is a traffic light at the intersection. Cars are backed up all the way. The thief stops and turns to see Jonathan still on his tail. He looks to see Strickland Plaza up ahead, where Gus is standing on a sidewalk. Gus is lighting himself a cigar. The thief manages to dash in and around the vehicles with Jonathan following closely behind. He notices the big Christmas tree standing in front of the mall. The man continues running. He is hurrying toward the back entrance of the mall.
Once the thief gets closer to Strickland, he notices the sight of Gus. A sly smile comes across his face. He turns to see Jonathan, who is standing on a
sidewalk out of sight. Jonathan is helpless to catch up. Traffic has started moving now that the light turned green. The thief rushes up to Gus and deliberately runs into him.
“I beg your pardon,” Gus says, taken by surprise. “I didn’t see you. Are you all right?” he asks, taking him by the arm. He is concerned he may have hurt him.
“I’m fine. It was my fault. There isn’t any harm done,” the man replies as Gus looks down to see his cigar has fallen to the ground.
Gus sighs as he continues looking at his cigar. The thief uses this opportunity to his advantage. He quickly hides the necklace in one of Gus’s pockets before fleeing away. The man hurries toward the other entrance of Strickland Plaza as Jonathan is crossing the street. Jonathan rushes up to the sidewalk just as the “real thief” is getting away. Police sirens, along with an ambulance, can be heard in the distance. Jonathan stops upon noticing Gus. A look of complete shock comes across his face upon recognizing Gus. He turns to see Gus holding his Santa Claus costume over his arm. Jonathan turns toward the back entrance, only not to see the thief anywhere in sight. Jennifer comes rushing up to them. She is out of breath.
“Jonathan, do you know what happened? I heard the alarm!” Jennifer exclaims with worry.
“A necklace was stolen from Jerad’s,” Jonathan replies, turning to face his wife. He is out of breath. “Only this time it wasn’t shoplifting. It was a robbery. Someone came into the shop armed with a gun wearing a Santa Claus costume.”
“What?!!!” Jennifer exclaims, stunned.
“I thought I had the thief, but he got away,” Jonathan says as he stares at Gus’ costume.
“Was Jerad hurt?” Jennifer asks with concern.
“No, but the guard got shot in the arm after being knocked out.”
“Someone stole jewelry from a shop wearing a Santa Claus costume in broad daylight?!!!” Gus exclaims in astonishment. “It’s thieves like that that give Santa a bad name!” he exclaims, outraged.
“Yes, certainly does, doesn’t it?” Jonathan comments, eying him suspiciously. “You are Gus, Max’s friend, aren’t you?” he asks, now remembering why he recognized him.
“Yes, I am, Mr. Hart,” Gus replies with a smile, extending his hand just as two police cars come to a stop in front of the mall.
Two police officers get out of their car and walk over. One of the officers is Lieutenant Draper.
“Jonathan, Jerad told us you chased after the thief,” Lieutenant Draper says. “Do you know which way he went?”
“All I can tell you, lieutenant, is that he headed toward Strickland,” Jonathan replies, turning to face him. “This is Gus. He’s a friend of Max,” he explains, introducing their friend.
“Hello, Gus,” Lieutenant Draper says, turning to face the man. “Did you see which way the thief disappeared to?”
“No, I regret to say I did not,” Gus replies with disappointment.
“What did he take?” Jennifer asks.
“It was a necklace, darling,” Jonathan tells his wife. “An appraiser was coming over to examine the necklace along with the other pieces that arrived.”
“The appraiser came in soon after we questioned Jerad,” Lieutenant Draper tells them. He notices the costume on Gus’s arm. “What are you doing out of costume?”
“Did Strickland fire you?” Jennifer asks with worry, remembering the confrontation between him and the owner of the plaza.
“Yes. Strickland gave me one more day on the job, but I decided to quit. I heard he decided to give my job to a man with a real beard. I’ll have to look to see if any other department stores are looking for a Santa Claus.”
“What were you doing working on Rodeo Drive?” Jonathan asks, turning to him. “I only expected to see you at the racetrack.”
Just as Gus opens his mouth to reply, Lieutenant Draper speaks up.
“I’ll have to ask my fellow officer to search you. It’s just strictly routine,” Lieutenant Draper says.
“Go ahead. You won’t find the necklace on me,” Gus replies willingly.
Lieutenant Draper nods as the other officer walks over to Gus. He begins to search him.
“Jonathan, I took on the job because I am broke. I have a gambling addiction, which left me very heavily in debt,” Gus says, turning to Jonathan just as the officer reaches into the pocket of his costume.
The officer sees the necklace in the pocket and brings it out. “The necklace would be the way to pay off your debts,” he comments, showing the piece of jewelry in his hand.
Jonathan and Jennifer have a look of shock on their faces. They are stunned the police found the stolen necklace on Gus. They exchange glances.
“Read him his rights,” Lieutenant Draper replies as the officer takes out his handcuffs.
The officer begins to read Gus his rights as he places the handcuffs around his hands. Gus is in a state of panic and fear. They lead him away to their car. Jonathan and Jennifer are watching the arrest.
“I didn’t steal the necklace! I was framed!” Gus insists. “Jonathan, Jennifer, you have to help me!” he begs the couple. He is forced into the backseat of the police car.
“Gus, try not to worry. Jonathan and I will help you,” Jennifer assures him as the officer shuts the door in the man’s face.
Jonathan places an arm around his wife’s shoulder. Lieutenant Draper and the other officer get into their vehicle. The Harts watch as the car starts to drive away. Jennifer turns to her husband just as soon as the automobile is out of sight.
“Jonathan, I don’t believe Gus is responsible for the theft. Do you?” she asks, looking up at Jonathan.
“I admit I was suspicious when I saw the Santa Claus costume on his arm,” Jonathan confesses to Jennifer. “Besides, Max told me that Gus doesn’t care for shopping. He did have a motive and maybe an opportunity to steal the necklace. Gus doesn’t strike me as a man, who is in such financial difficulty, would resort to stealing, though.”
“Anyone could have dressed up in a Santa Claus costume.”
“And got rid of it before fleeing. The police didn’t even find a gun on Gus. The only evidence far as Lieutenant Draper is concerned is the necklace itself
and the costume.”
Hart House
Jonathan drives their vehicle up to the main house. The backseat is full of bags containing wrapped packages and bed sheets. A Christmas tree is seated among all the presents. Max is walking toward them from the guest house. He has a feather duster in his hand. Freeway is walking alongside him. Jonathan and Jennifer exit the Corniche. They start to get the packages out.
“Hey, how did the shoppin’ go?” Max cheerfully asks, approaching them.
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances, not knowing how to tell him about Gus’ arrest.
“That bad, huh?” Max asks upon seeing the expression on their faces. “That is why I get my shoppin’ done early. People go crazy durin’ this time of year.”
“Max, we have some news we don’t know how to break to you,” Jonathan replies reluctantly, stopping to face Max along with Jennifer.
“What news?” What could have happened on Rodeo Drive that could have me upset? You know Rodeo Drive ain’t my kind of hangout, Mr. and Mrs. H.”
“Did you know that Gus took on a job of Santa at Strickland?” Jennifer asks.
“Yeah, he called me a few days ago tellin’ me that he applied for the job. What happened? Did Gus decide to quit?”
“No, he was fired.”
A look of disbelief comes across Max’s face.
“Fired? Now, why would someone fire Gus? He had his heart set on earnin’ extra dough!” Max exclaims, showing some disgust for Gus being let go.
“We know about his gambling addiction. He told us all about it,” Jonathan says. “There is no easy way to tell you what happened, so I’ll just come out and tell you. Gus was arrested for theft. Someone wearing a Santa costume barged into Jerad’s and stole a brand new necklace. Lieutenant Draper’s man found it in Gus’ costume right outside of the department store.”
“And they too know about his addiction,” Jennifer adds.
A look of anger comes across Max’s face. He is shaken up by the news.
“Gus a thief?!!! That’s ridiculous!!! Gus wouldn’t steal a piece of jewelry any more than he would rig a horse race!!!” Max exclaims with annoyance. “I’m goin’ down to see him,” he says, taking off his apron. “I’ll take the station wagon.”
“Max, I don’t think you should go down to the station right now,” Jonathan tells Max gently.
“Gus is already shaken up himself by his arrest. You should wait until you calmed down,” Jennifer advises him.
Max sighs. “You’re right. I hate after everythin’ else Gus has gone through he is goin’ to spend Christmas in a jail cell for a robbery he didn’t commit.”
“You have a point. A jail cell certainly is no place for someone kind enough like Gus to be Santa to be spending Christmas.”
“Mr. and Mrs. H, I know you have company comin’ down tomorrow for the holiday, but could you find it in your heart to help get Gus out on bail? And well, find the scum who did steal that necklace? Gus ain’t got no family and owes a month’s rent on his apartment. He’s been goin’ to sessions to help with his gamblin’ problem for weeks now. He ain’t been to the track, let alone place a bet since.”
“I already called Lieutenant Draper on the car phone after we finished shopping to ask if we could see Gus. You are not the only person who believes he is innocent. The lieutenant did tell me that the district attorney thinks this is an open and shut case though. Gus’ trial starts in only a week,” Jonathan replies.
“They are holdin' his trial before Christmas?! That’s the holiday spirit for you!” Max exclaims in disgust.
“I think the district attorney just wants to get the case over and done with now that this is the latest of series of robberies committed at Jerad’s,” Jennifer says.
“Lieutenant Draper mentioned that Jerad put pressure on the prosecutor for Gus to stand trial before Christmas,” Jonathan tells them.
“The man may face bankruptcy if the thefts continue at his stores. I think he is more concerned about his financial affairs and reputation than the holiday spirit.”
Max gives them a look, showing contempt for the jewelry store owner responsible for his friend facing trial before Christmas. “Can’t you use your influence with Jerad? You and Mrs. H have been customers of his for many years.”
“I’ll go down to have a word with him. He may not appreciate me asking for a postponement. Jerad may think I’m interfering in his business.”
“If he thinks that then I would tell him I wouldn’t go to his store again. Jerad should be at least thankful he ain’t the one in the slammer.”
“Threats are not going to help Gus,” Jennifer tells Max, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. “Jonathan and I will do all we can. Did you get the guest house ready for dad?”
“Yeah, I gave it a good cleanin’ up job. Even Freeway helped out. Didn’t you?” Max asks, turning to the dog.
Freeway barks as he sits up, showing a tiny feather duster wrapped around his tail.
“I always said Freeway is one unique dog,” Jonathan replies with a smile.
“He is clever just like his daddy,” Jennifer says with a wide grin as she looks at Jonathan.
Jonathan returns the smile before turning back to Max. “We’ll go down to the station. Help us carry the packages and tree into the house first.”
Max nods and walks over to the vehicle. He, along with the Harts, start getting the rest of the packages out. Freeway walks over. He jumps into the backseat. Freeway, using his teeth, picks up a small bag. Jonathan, Jennifer, and Max watch as Freeway carries the bag into the house.
“You know if Freeway knew how to play gin, I just might beat Max yet,” Jonathan says as they start toward the front door.
“Sore loser!” Max grumbles.
“I would just like to play with someone who isn’t on a winning streak most of the time.”
“Now, boys, remember goodwill to all men,” Jennifer replies seriously with a chuckle.
They walk into the foyer.
Los Angeles Metropolitan Police Station
Jonathan and Jennifer are visiting Gus at the station a short time later that afternoon. They are speaking to him through a see-through wall that separates visitors from the prisoners in the visitation room. A guard stands behind him, keeping watch.
“Jonathan, Jennifer, I can’t tell you how good it is to see you!” Gus exclaims in relief. “I apologize for getting you involved in my personal problem!” he tells his visitors in shame.
“Gus, you don’t have to apologize. You had no way of knowing a thief was going to steal a piece of jewelry from Jerad’s before planting the necklace on you,” Jennifer replies sympathetically.
“We would like to do all we can for you considering the circumstances,” Jonathan tells Gus. “Max told us you've fallen on bad times. Jennifer and I would like you to know you have more than one friend you can count on.”
Tears form in Gus’ eyes. “Max told me you and Jennifer are such good people. He was right. I can see why he loves you both dearly,” Gus says, deeply moved by their generosity. “I’m worried about the debts I pay more than proving my innocence. Those types of people don’t mess around,” he tells them, troubled.
“Let’s worry about one thing at a time. I’ll pay your debts just as soon as we see you are out. Has the lieutenant told you about the trial?”
“Yes,” Gus answers with a sigh. “He told me they are holding my trial in a week. I’m sure to be convicted with the evidence they got.”
“Is that what he told you?” Jennifer asks with curiosity.
“No, but from the expression on his face, I’m sure if it. I wonder how good the attorney the court will appoint me would be.”
“I wouldn’t worry about that, Gus,” Jonathan says. “If Jennifer and I can prove you were framed, you won’t need a lawyer. If it comes down to that, I will hire you a well-experienced defense attorney.”
“Yeah, Max told me a while back that you solve cases in your spare time,” Gus replies. “I’m grateful to have you on my side.”
“Any friend of Max’s is a friend of ours,” Jennifer assures Gus with a warm smile.
“Yes, darling, one thing is for certain Max has always been a good judge of character when it comes to friends,” Jonathan replies, turning to his wife. He returns his attention to Gus. “If Max believes your innocence, that is good enough for us. As Jennifer said, anyone could have dressed up in your costume. That is a fact itself. Even a promising young lawyer would make that known in court as part of your defense.”
“We are going to see about posting your bail just as soon we leave. Lieutenant Draper said the district attorney thinks he has an open and shut case. Bail may be denied since you don’t have any ties to the community. However, the judge could grant bail since this is your first offense. It just depends on the judge,” Jennifer says.
“Let’s hope he remembers the true meaning of Christmas. I wouldn’t lose hope. Jennifer and I are respected citizens of Los Angeles. The judge may take my reputation and the fact that I’m an upstanding citizen into account. Now, about a place for you to stay. If bail is granted, I will pay for your rent.”
“We insist you stay at our home,” Jennifer says, interrupting her husband. “You will spend Christmas with us.”
Jonathan stops after realizing what Jennifer just said. He turns and looks at his wife in shock at her for offering Gus their place to stay.
“Oh, I couldn’t impose,” Gus replies, reluctantly. He doesn’t notice Jonathan’s reaction.
“It’s no imposition at all. Besides, Jonathan and I wouldn’t hear of you spending Christmas alone. I won’t take no for an answer!” Jennifer exclaims adamantly.
Jonathan is still looking at his wife with disappointment. Jennifer happens to notice the “thrilled” expression on her husband’s face.
“You can stay in the guest house. There is plenty of room,” Jennifer says before turning to look at Jonathan. She gives him a look, showing she doesn’t want any arguments. “Isn’t that right, darling? Plenty of room?” she asks, staring at her husband straight in the face.
“Yes, plenty of room,” Jonathan replies with a smile, hiding his disappointment. “The more, the merrier,” he says before moving closer to his wife. “'Tis the season,” Jonathan sings in her ear quietly while still managing a smile.
Jennifer moves closer to Jonathan. “That’s right, darling,” she sings in his ear while she and Jonathan exchange smiles with Gus.
Jennifer plays around with her necklace while Jonathan shows Gus a wide grin. Gus smiles and nods, happy to accept the invitation.
Hart House That Night
Jonathan and Jennifer are getting into bed to settle down before getting their rest. They place the covers over them. The couple is in their silk pajamas.
“Jonathan, are you mad at me for inviting Gus to spend Christmas with us?” Jennifer asks, turning to Jonathan. “He is a gentle man who has no family and friends. It wouldn’t be showing the true spirit of the holiday if we let him spend it alone in some apartment. I think we owe it to Max after all he has done for us, and I do feel sorry for him.”
“No, darling, I’m not mad. I was looking forward to spending Christmas with just my wife and her family,” Jonathan replies, turning to face Jennifer. “I’m not used to many visitors. Besides, how is Steven going to feel about sharing the guest house with a man he never met?”
“Dad will be fine with sharing the guest house once we explain the situation, and what do you mean you are not used to many visitors? Have you forgotten the many times people have stayed with us since we were married?”
“If you are referring to your relatives like your Aunt Renee and your cousin, Betsy, we were expecting them. Besides, that’s the point.”
“What exactly is the point?” Jennifer asks, turning her head around to get a better look at her husband. She has a tone of astonishment in her voice.
“They didn’t come to stay with us at the same time.”
“What does that have to do with Gus staying in the guest house?”
“Well, to put it nicely, it will be like Grand Central Station around here. Angelina is staying in the guest room right outside our room in the hall. Your dad and Gus in the guest house. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t have anything personal against company. It’s just I much prefer when it is the of two us together with Max and Freeway around.”
“That’s so romantic, and I do love that about you! I love it when we can be alone together with just the two of us without anyone around. It’s like we are in our own world, separated from everyone else. You are forgetting something, though, darling.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You forgot about those other times people stayed with us like Max’s pen pal, Elizabeth. She arrived without any notice. We had to put her up in the guest room. Remember how she thought Max was the one with all the millions, and we waited on them hand and foot?”
“Oh, yes. I remember. How could I not remember you throwing the dessert in my face or Max constantly buzzing me the moment I stepped back into the kitchen after picking up their dinner?” Jonathan asks with a chuckle.
“What about Pamela and Dick?”
“Pamela and Dick who?”
“Pamela and Dick who?!!!” Jennifer asks in astonishment, lifting herself up. She laughs.
“What’s so funny?”
“How can you forget Pamela and Dick Braddon? They had to be the most incompatible married couple we ever met, perhaps with the exception of Sir William Belgrave and Lady Claire Belgrave.”
“Now, I remember them. Dick and Pamela Braddon, whom we met when we went skiing. What a couple that was a piece of work!”
“I’ll say. Dick not only went to the trouble of making his wife look neurotic by giving her pills. We found proof on that tape that he killed that champion skier, Larson because he found out he and Pamela were having an affair.”
“And I ended up having a knock-down-drag-out fight with Dick that nearly tore the living room apart,” Jonathan says, shaking his head in disbelief. “We always meet the most dysfunctional married couples.”
“What about that fight we had?”
Jonathan looks at his wife with a blank expression. “What fight? You and I never fought in our lives, darling. We always agree on everything.”
“Jonathan, you are a very loving and affectionate husband, but you are also absentminded.”
“Refresh my memory then.”
“Well, it all started after Dick knocked you out at the office. You had a headache,” Jennifer replies as she travels back to that time.
Her mind returns to the present.
“Well?” Jennifer asks.
“That goes to show that even a marriage perfect as ours an argument could happen once.”
“Jonathan, that wasn’t our only argument.”
“It wasn’t? When was the other time we quarreled?”
“After I came through at Jean-Claude’s house the time our friends, Mike and Gail were suspects in Norman Bensinger’s murder. I’ll refresh your memory again,” Jennifer replies as she and her husband travel down memory lane again.
“At least I got a compliment and a kiss on the lips,” Jonathan replies with a sigh thoughtfully.
“But I just got a handshake. You still were upset,” Jennifer reminds her husband with a smile.
“I gave my wife a handshake after we argued?!!!” Jonathan asks in disbelief. “I’ll make that up to you now, darling,” he says, reassuringly and with sympathy in his voice. He takes Jennifer in his arms. Jonathan gives her a big kiss on the lips, his arms wrapped around her tightly. He lets her go and looks at her for a reaction. “How was that for making up?” he asks with a sly smile.
“Truce,” Jennifer replies with a wink, kissing her husband on the lips. “But, darling, let’s not have any more arguments from now on,” she tells Jonathan as she moves her fingers slowly up his arm.
“No more arguments. I’ll seal that promise with a kiss,” Jonathan replies, seductively.
“You better. If you don’t, I might have to show you I can be tough when I put my mind to it,” Jennifer replies seductively, placing her hands around Jonathan’s neck.
“I hope you won’t be too tough. It’s been a long day,” Jonathan softly says as he leans closer to his wife, their faces only inches away.
“It’s going to be an even longer night,” Jennifer tells him softly as they move their faces closer to each other. “I plan on showing you just how long of a night with me can be,” she says, moving her lip toward Jonathan.
Jonathan is also moving his lip toward Jennifer. They kiss, finding themselves in a tight embrace. The Harts begin making love, moving around on their backs. Jonathan begins kissing his wife on her face before starting to work on kissing her neck. He starts kissing above her breast.
Hart House The Next Day
Jonathan is driving the Corniche over the bridge. It passes by the ducks in the lake.
The vehicle approaches the main house from the driveway. Jonathan brings the car to a stop.
The doors open. Jonathan and Jennifer get out from the front while Gus gets out from the back. They shut the doors. The front door to the house opens, and Max walks out.
“Hey, Gus!” Max exclaims with a warm smile. Freeway walks out behind him. “Welcome!” he says, approaching his friend.
“Max, it’s been too long!” Gus exclaims as they embrace.
Freeway barks. They look down to see the dog sitting up.
“Oh, excuse me. This is Freeway,” Max replies, introducing Gus to the Harts’ pet.
“Freeway never does like feeling left out,” Jennifer comments.
“Well, hello, Freeway. It is so nice to meet you,” Gus says. He bends down and shakes Freeway’s paw. “I guess you are the rest of the welcome committee.”
Freeway barks as he sits down. Jonathan and Jennifer chuckle as Jonathan places his arm around his wife.
“He certainly is,” Jonathan agrees.
“How are you holdin’ up?” Max asks Gus with concern. He places a comforting hand on his friend's shoulder.
“I’m fine now that I’m out on bail. I want to thank you for coming over to visit me during those rough times,” Gus replies, turning to face Max.
“Forget it,” Max says, waving his hand. “That’s what friends are for. You keep goin’ to those meetin’s. You and I have been through a lot over the years.”
“How did you meet?” Jennifer asks.
“We met in high school. Gus has been hangin’ around me ever since it seems like,” Max replies with a sigh. “We lost touch until we ran into each other months back. Come on. I’ll show you to your livin’ quarters,” he says, taking Gus’s suitcase out of the backseat.
“Let me carry that,” Gus replies as he starts to take the suitcase.
“Nothin’ doin’. You’re the guest, so I’ll be carryin’ your luggage,” Max says. “Guest house is all set up for you,” he tells Gus as they start toward the guest house.
The Harts hear a horn. A taxi is coming up the driveway. Jonathan and Jennifer turn to see the cab coming up to the house. Steven and Angelina are seated in the backseat. Jonathan and Jennifer exchange worried glances. They rush up as the taxi comes to a stop behind the Corniche. The door opens, and Steven gets out. Angelina is paying the driver their fare.
“Dad,” Jennifer says with a warm smile, embracing her father.
“Jennifer, it is so good to see my girl again,” Steven replies, pulling out of the embrace. He stands back to get a look at his daughter. “You are just as beautiful as the last time I saw you.”
“Why shouldn’t she be, Steven?” Jonathan asks with a smile. “She is married to me,” he says as he and Steven shake hands.
“You won’t get an argument from me on that one.”
“I’m sorry we missed your flight. Jonathan and I were getting ready to pick you up,” Jennifer replies.
“You didn’t miss anything, darling. The plane landed early,” Steven says.
“Why didn’t you call us to pick you up?” Jennifer asks as Angelina gets out of the taxi.
“Your dad wanted to surprise you with our arrival,” Angelina tells them.
“It was a wonderful surprise. Jonathan and I will help you with your luggage,” Jennifer says as they walk over to the trunk.
Jonathan and Jennifer start to pick up the suitcases. Jennifer picks up two.
“Three suitcases? Are you planning on spending a month?” Steven asks, noticing the number of suitcases. He has a tone of disbelief in his voice.
“Dad, we women always travel with more luggage,” Jennifer says.
“That may be true, but your mom always made do with just one suitcase,” Steven replies as Jonathan carries his suitcase.
“Mother was an exceptional woman,” Jennifer replies as all four of them walk up to the main house.
“Your mother was a great many things, dear. Exceptional is definitely one of the words I would use to describe her,” Steven says as they walk into the foyer.
“I’ll get the rest of your luggage,” Jonathan tells the guests as Jennifer and Angelina head toward the stairs.
“I’ll help, Jonathan. It will give my daughter a chance to catch up with her favorite niece,” Steven says, turning to the women. He gives them a wink.
Steven follows Jonathan out of the house.
“How was the plane ride?” Jennifer asks, turning to face Angelina.
“The flight was fine, Aunt Jennifer. I’m just suffering from jet lag. I forgot how much college can take a toll on you,” Angelina replies.
“I’ll never forget all those exams I took when I was in college. I thought I was going to fall asleep, staying up late. It seems like only yesterday when I was studying journalism myself. Speaking of which, how is the class coming along?”
“I’m getting all A’s on my exams and assignments,” Angelina says with a proud smile.
“You’ll graduate with flying colors in no time,” Jennifer replies with pride, embracing her niece. “Are you taking night or day courses?”
“Day. Staying up till midnight is all I can handle, especially after all those years I worked at my publishing company. I can’t thank you enough for all the
support you’ve given me!” Angelina exclaims, embracing Jennifer.
Jennifer smiles as she hugs her niece. Jonathan and Steven walk into the foyer with the rest of the luggage. Jonathan shuts the front door with his elbow. They walk over to the women.
“We got all of the luggage out of the taxi,” Steven says with a sigh. “Now, how about you showing me to the guest house? I could do with a nap. At my age, flying is exhausting.”
“I’ll show you to the guest house, dad, but first-’’ Jennifer starts to say.
The front door opens, and Max walks in with Freeway behind him.
“Mr. and Mrs. H, I got Gus all settled into the guest house,” he says with a grin, delighted his friend is spending Christmas among friends.
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange uncomfortable glances. Steven turns to look at Jennifer with a look, showing a bit of annoyance.
“If I may inquire, why am I sharing the guest house with someone who is a stranger to me?” Steven asks calmly, wondering what is going on.
“Gus is a friend of mine, Mr. Edwards,” Max says, shutting the door behind him. He walks over to them.
“Just call me, Steven, Max,” Steven replies, turning around to face Max.
“I’m delighted to see you again,” Max says, extending his hand. “Nice you’ll be spendin’ Christmas here! Welcome!” he exclaims warmly.
“Thanks. It is nice to see you too,” Steven replies with a smile, shaking Max’s hand. He returns to Jennifer. Jonathan is by his wife’s side. “Now, just exactly what is going on?”
“Well, it’s a long story,” Jennifer says with a smile. “Where should I begin?” she wonders as she touches her necklace.
“Darling, why don’t you explain the situation best as you can? I’m sure Steven will understand,” Jonathan replies reassuringly. He places a comforting hand on his wife’s shoulder.
“It is like this: Gus doesn’t have any place to stay. He is all alone, and it is Christmas, so I invited him to stay with us,” Jennifer says, beginning to
explain the situation to her father. “Gus was fired from his job as Santa from Strickland Plaza on Rodeo Drive yesterday. He was also arrested. The police found a necklace on him that was stolen
from Jerad’s.”
“Jennifer and I went Christmas shopping. While she was at Strickland, I was at Jerad’s. A man wearing a Santa costume burst in demanding the necklace be handed over to him,” Jonathan replies, finishing his wife’s story.
“Oh, how dreadful!” Angelina exclaims with disdain. “Was anyone hurt?”
“The guard was shot in the arm, but he will be fine. It was only a flesh wound.”
“I’m sorry, dad, but I couldn’t let Gus spend Christmas by himself,” Jennifer says, walking over to her dad. She places an arm around his shoulder. “You do understand?”
“Of course I understand, darling,” Steven replies with a smile. “I wouldn’t dream of Gus spending Christmas by himself. It is just a bit awkward since I wanted to spend time with my daughter and her husband, but I’ll make do with the arrangement,” he assures her. “Besides, I haven’t spent Christmas with you in years.”
Jennifer smiles and hugs her father. Steven places his luggage on the floor and embraces his daughter.
“I can’t tell my daughter what to do in her own house,” Steven says.
Jennifer, Jonathan, Angelina, and Max chuckle at Steven’s comment. Jennifer kisses her dad on the cheek.
“Come on. I’ll show you to your room,” Jennifer replies, turning to Angelina.
“Perhaps I should stay in a hotel,” Angelina says as they start up the stairs.
“I won’t hear of it. We have plenty of room,” Jennifer insists, walking up the stairs.
“I’m sorry for the inconvenience,” Max says, turning to Steven.
“Now, not another word. My daughter makes all the decisions around here, and I trust her judgment,” Steven replies, turning to face Max with a serious look. “Would you mind taking my suitcases down to the guesthouse? I want to have a word with my favorite son-in-law.”
“I’d be happy to. I already got your bed all ready for you,” Max says, taking Steven’s suitcases.
“You’re a good man,” Steven replies as Max starts out of the house, carrying the luggage with him.
Stevens turns back to face Jonathan.
“Jonathan, do you and my daughter make a habit out of helping other people when they find themselves in a predicament?”
“We do it all the time, Steven. It became a part of our lives that Jennifer and I are accustomed to it.”
“Why don’t you just let the police handle this investigation? It is their job. I’m not trying to sound stuffy. It’s just after all these years of being with the CIA, I am very aware of how authorities feel about outsiders.”
“The authorities are used to Jennifer and I handling our own investigations by now. Remember, your daughter, and I found ourselves in the midst of murder, mystery, and intrigue when we first met in London. It’s been murder ever since.”
“Knowing my daughter, I can imagine Jennifer can’t find it within her heart not to come to people’s aid. Jennifer is a very strong and determined woman.”
“Yes, she is. Things don’t look well for Gus. Since he had been fired, he doesn’t have any money. I learned from Max years ago that his wife walked out on him soon after they were married,” Jonathan tells his father-in-law.
“I loved Jennifer’s mother very much, so I can only imagine the heartache Gus must have suffered after his wife left him. I was very fortunate to be married for many years. My only regret besides not being there for Jennifer was that her mother died at a young age. In a way, she resembles her mother with her personality, strength, and warmth. I’m a very proud father, and I consider myself blessed to have a daughter like Jennifer. If her mother were alive, she’d be very proud too. Tell me, Jonathan, just exactly how do you feel about having Gus as your guest?” Steven asks, looking at his son-in-law thoughtfully.
“To be honest, Steven, I rather spend Christmas with my wife and family. I do agree with Jennifer. Gus shouldn’t spend Christmas alone, especially after all he’s been through. Christmas is for being surrounded by friends. Jennifer and I want Gus to know he has friends. Like Jennifer said, Christmas is the time of giving. How do you feel about sharing the guest house with Gus?”
“I share the same sentiments as you and my daughter about Christmas and the value of friendship. I was in the war. I can handle anything,” Steven replies, seriously. “Is he anything like Max?” he asks, placing his hands in the pockets of his suit.
“Gus and Max went to high school together. They are best friends.”
“That is good enough for me,” Steven replies.
Hart House That Night
Jonathan and Jennifer are enjoying finishing up their dinner, along with their guests in the dining room. They are seated at the far end of the table. Steven is sitting by his daughter, Angelina is sitting by Jennifer, and Gus is seated by Jonathan. Max is walking around the room, refilling up their glasses. They are each engaged in polite conversation. The table quiets down a bit as Steven gently taps on his glass with a knife. All eyes turn to him. Max has just finished filling up everyone’s drink.
“Thank you!” Steven exclaims, rising to his feet. He has his glass in hand. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank my daughter and my son-in-law for being such charming hostess and host.”
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange smiles.
“And Max, thank you for a delicious dinner,” Steven says, turning to Max, who is standing beside him.
“Thank you. I’m glad you liked it,” Max replies, touched by the kind words.
“Well, that’s all I wanted to say. Carry on,” Steven says, retaking his seat. He places his glass down on the table.
“Sometimes I think Steven forgets he is no longer in the military, darling,” Jonathan comments with a smile, turning to Jennifer.
“Dad never could forget the war. He was very proud of serving our country. I think dad looks upon those years as a special time of his life. I don’t know how he broke away from living such an active life for so long. He traveled so much,” Jennifer whispers back.
“There is no need to whisper, darling. I heard everything you said,” Steven replies. “You wait until you are my age, Jonathan. You’ll look back on your time in the Navy fondly too. I was in the prime of my life.”
“And you still are,” Jennifer says with a smile. She reaches across the table to kiss her father on the cheek.
“I have you to thank you for that. You keep an old man going with all the love and care you show me,” Steven replies, patting his daughter on the hand. “And I also have you to thank for my reconciliation with Angelina. You always did have a way of bringing out the best in people. It’s another trait you inherited from your mother.”
“I’m just glad you are on speaking terms again, and she is a part of our family. You know I always considered Angelina, a niece to me.”
“Speaking of family, your father and I have some news we want to tell you after dinner,” Angelina tells Jennifer with a smile.
“Why the suspense?” Jennifer asks.
“All in good time,” Steven says. “You know I have been thinking how nice it is for a family to be together at a big table for meals. That’s where the family should eat together.”
“We rarely eat in the dining room, Steven. Most of the time Jennifer and I take our meals in here is when I have important business acquaintances over,” Jonathan replies.
“We’ll make an exception in your and Angelina’s honor while you are here,” Jennifer assures her dad. “Max will serve Brandy in the living room now if everyone is finished,” she says, addressing everyone at the table.
“I can’t speak for everyone else, but Brandy suits me right now,” Steven replies, rising to his feet. “I’m going to the living room.” He turns to Max, who is about to head out of the room. “Wait up now, Max. I want to select the Brandy. When it comes to selecting the perfect taste of Brandy, that is my specialty.”
“Dad, we have a wine cellar full of wine imported from all over the world,” Jennifer says as Jonathan holds the chair back while she rises to her feet.
Angelina and Gus also rise to their feet.
“Wine is even more satisfactory. Forget the Brandy,” Steven replies, waving the idea off with his hand. He turns back to Max. “Wine is good for the body, especially a man my age. Come on. You show me where the vintage is kept, and you’ll drink wine that will make you think you’re at an authentic Italian restaurant.”
Max nods as he leads Jennifer’s father out of the room to show him down to the wine cellar. Jonathan, Jennifer, Angelina, and Gus walk into the foyer. They head straight into the living room. Jennifer and Angelina sit on the couch facing the fireplace. They begin engaging in a discussion. Jonathan is about to sit across from them when Gus takes him by the arm. He takes him aside.
“Jonathan, I hate to spoil the mood of the evening, but I have to have a word with you,” Gus says, desperately. He is speaking softly.
“What’s on your mind?” Jonathan asks with a bit of concern.
“It’s about my gambling debts,” Gus whispers. “They are due next week.”
Jonathan sighs. “All right. I’ll go down to my bank first thing in the morning after breakfast to withdraw money from my account. I’ll go with you to deliver the money.”
“Thank you, Jonathan. I hate to be a bother, but if I don’t pay, I will be over my head in trouble,” Gus replies sympathetically.
“Jennifer and I have dealt with a loan shark before, so we know what you are up against,” Jonathan assures him.
The telephone on the desk rings. “Excuse me,” Jonathan says, turning to their guest. “Make yourself feel at home. Max should be back shortly with the wine,” he tells him, making his way over to the desk.
Gus takes a seat across from Jennifer and Angelina on the couch.
“Jonathan Hart,” Jonathan says, answering the call.
“Jonathan, it’s Jerad,” Jerad replies, seriously on the other end of the receiver. “I want you to come over to my galleria right away.”
Max and Steven walk into the living room. Max carries the bottle of wine that Steven selected.
“That didn’t take long,” Jennifer remarks, turning to her dad.
“Once Max showed me where the vintage is stored, I knew the year I had in mind,” Steven replies. “Max, pour the wine. Let’s show my daughter and son-in-law how special this wine is,” he says, making his way over to the bar with Max.
Max places the bottle down on the bar. He picks up two glasses as Steven begins opening the bottle carefully.
“Do you need some help?” Angelina asks, turning to Steven.
“No, I opened wines all my life,” Steven insists as Max places the glasses down.
Jonathan is still standing talking to Jerad on the telephone. “I’ll be right over,” Jonathan replies, reluctantly. He hangs up the receiver with a sigh.
“Come on, everyone. Let’s drink up,” Steven says as Jonathan walks over.
Jennifer, Angelina, and Gus are standing across from Steven. Steven takes a seat on one of the bar stools.
“Jonathan, you are just in time to taste this wine. You and my daughter have an impressive collection in the cellar,” Steven tells his son-in-law with a proud smile. He is handing everyone their glass except Max. Max already has a drink in hand as he stands behind the bar.
“Ah, 1946 was an excellent year for your mother and me,” Steven says, taking a sip of the wine. He hands Jonathan a glass.
“Thank you,” Jonathan replies, soberly, taking the glass.
Jennifer notices the worried expression on her husband’s face. His sudden change in mood concerns her.
Jonathan takes a sip. “Very good,” he says inattentively.
“Very good?!” Steven asks, taken by surprise by Jonathan’s lack of enthusiasm. “It’s first-rate,” he says, taking another sip as Jonathan places his glass down.
“Excuse me,” Jonathan replies before turning to Jennifer. “Darling, I need to speak to you alone for a moment.”
Jennifer nods and places her glass down. “Pardon me, dad,” Jennifer says, turning to Steven.
Jonathan takes Jennifer by the arm and leads her into the foyer. “I got a call from Jerad. He wants me to come right over,” Jonathan explains, facing each other.
“What?!” Jennifer asks, stunned. “Does he realize it is after closing hours?”
“I told him about our visitors, but he wouldn’t take no for an answer. He was very persistent.”
“Did he say what he wanted?”
“No, he didn’t. Jerad just told me to come over to the galleria. I think he wants to see me about getting Gus released on bail.”
“Jerad certainly wasted no time in contacting you,” Jennifer replies with a bit of annoyance. “I understand, darling. I will make your excuses,” she says with a smile. “Don’t be long.”
“I’ll be back soon as I can,” Jonathan assures his wife. He kisses her on the lips.
Jonathan heads straight toward the door as Jennifer watches. He walks out.
“Where the devil is Jonathan going to so abruptly at this hour?” Steven asks, turning to his daughter.
“He received a telephone call. It was urgent, dad. He’ll be back soon as he can,” Jennifer replies, walking back over to the bar.
Steven shakes his head in disbelief as he pours Jennifer another glass.
“I would think Hart Industries’ business could wait with Christmas just around the corner.”
“It wasn’t a business meeting,” Jennifer replies, picking up the glass.
Gus turns to Jennifer with a look of worry before turning to Max. They exchange uncomfortable glances.
Jerad’s Galleria of Grand Jewels
Jonathan pulls the Mercedes up to the store before putting the vehicle in park. He opens the door and walks over to the shop. Jonathan, opening the door, enters the galleria. The galleria is empty except for Jerad and his associate. Jerad stands by the window display, watching his partner start putting the Christmas decorations up.
“Oh, Jonathan, it was so good of you to come,” Jerad says as Jonathan walks over. “You remember my partner, Hendricks.”
“Yes, I do. It’s nice to see you again,” Jonathan replies. “I heard you have been out of town.”
“Yes, it was a family emergency,” Hendricks explains nervously as he turns to face Jonathan. He appears to be uncomfortable by his comment.
“Jerad, what is the urgency? Why did you want to see me?” Jonathan asks, turning to him.
“I want to talk to you about Gus,” Jerad replies seriously as they walk away from the window. “I was appalled you had him released from jail, especially after he attacked you in my store and shot my guard in the arm. It was very fortunate I was lucky to recover the pearl necklace after all the other robberies that occurred in my chain of stores. If he had gotten away with the necklace, it wouldn’t look good for my business. The theft doesn’t help matters now that the appraiser didn’t get a chance to examine the necklace. Luckily, he will be returning. After all these thefts, I decided to put the necklace in the safe until after the appraisal.”
“I don’t blame you for being concerned about your business. I know if my chain of stores were being robbed across the country, I would be alarmed too. I believe that Gus is innocent. He’s a friend of Max. They have known each other for years. Max said Gus wouldn’t steal any more than he would rig a horse race. Anyone could have dressed up in a Santa Claus costume. We didn’t see the thief’s face. We don’t have any concrete evidence that Gus stole the necklace. I want to ask you about postponing Gus’ trial. Christmas is coming up, as you know, and Gus doesn’t have any family. He is spending the holiday with Jennifer and me.”
“Jonathan, don’t misunderstand me. I am sympathetic about Gus’ difficulties. But these thefts put me in a very awkward position. I’ll have to file bankruptcy if any more of my jewels are taken. I have no choice, but to have Gus face trial before Christmas. I want the thief to face punishment as soon as possible. I will not jeopardize the future of my business,” Jerad replies calmly, but in a firm tone. He shows Jonathan a look, which means he is adamant about his decision.
Jonathan gives Jerad a look. For the first time, he is seeing the man in a whole new light.
“I had always respected you, but you have shown me a side of you I don’t care for. You are putting your business before the spirit of Christmas. Christmas is about showing kindness to our fellow men, particularly those in need. I think it's only fair to tell you that Jennifer and I will no longer be shopping here,” Jonathan replies. He gives the owner a look of disappointment.
A look of panic comes across Jerad’s face. “I beg you to reconsider! You and Jennifer have always been my favorite customers!”
“If we were your favorite customers, I think you’d be willing to do us a favor after all the business we have put your way during the years. I am afraid I stand firmly in my decision just as you do.”
Suddenly Hendricks appears very nervous. He drops some of the decorations to the floor. They include several ornaments he was about to hang on the tree.
“I’m sorry, Jerad,” Hendricks says with a sigh. “My arthritis must be acting up again.”
Jonathan turns to face Hendricks with a look on his face. It is a look that shows he wonders if the associate is telling the truth. He turns to leave the galleria.
“Oh, I think I should remind you that a man is innocent until proven guilty. It seems you have Gus convicted already. Hopefully, if Gus does go to trial, the jury may see for themselves you are convinced of his guilt.” He gives Jerad and Hendricks a look before walking out.
Jonathan shuts the door behind him.
Hendricks looks at Jerad anxiously before continuing with decorating the display in the window. While getting ready to hang another ornament, Hendricks accidentally backs into a table, knocking a jewelry case over. The bracelet falls out of it.
“I’ll get it,” Jerad says, walking over to the table. He picks up the bracelet, which he places back in the case. “Go on home. We will finish with the window display tomorrow. You have stayed after hours-long enough,” Jerad tells Hendricks with a smile, placing the case back.
Hendricks nods and places the decorations down. He steps off the ladder.
“Thank you, Jerad. I am tired. Shall I turn the lights off?” he asks, turning to him.
“No, I have something to do in the office first. I’ll turn the lights off myself. Goodnight,” Jerad replies, starting toward the office that is located in the back of the store.
“Goodnight,” Hendricks says, walking toward the door.
Jerad walks into his office. He shuts the door just as Hendricks can be heard, closing the front door. Jerad walks over to the safe, which is on a wall facing his desk. He turns the lock slowly, changing the combination.
Jerad’s Galleria Of Grand Jewels
Late that night, some mysterious stranger, wearing black gloves and carrying a black bag, unlocks the door to the shop with a key. The stranger is revealed to be wearing only black clothing. He slowly and quietly opens the door. The unknown person, who is tiptoeing in, shuts the door quietly. The key is placed in his pocket. The intruder takes out a flashlight and shines it toward the office. The person walks toward the office.
Once reaching the door, he places a tight fist through the glass. The glass shatters onto the floor in the office. The door is unlocked from inside before the knob is turned. The stranger then walks in before shining the light toward the safe. The lock is turned as the new combination has been figured out. Now the door is open, and a case is removed. The thief opens the case and shines the light on the pearl necklace. The case is then shut. The stranger then takes out a Santa hat from his bag, which he places in the safe where the case was. The door is kept open as the thief puts the case in the bag and flees.
Hart House The Following Morning
Jonathan and Jennifer are making love in their bed early that morning. After spending the previous evening with Steven and the other guests, the couple is finally enjoying time alone together. Jonathan is leaning over Jennifer. He is kissing her on the neck. Jennifer is smiling gayly, enjoying every minute of her husband making love to her.
“Oh, how romantic last night was!” Jennifer exclaims, aroused. “It was very stimulating.”
“Did I satisfy your every need, darling?” Jonathan asks seductively, kissing his wife on the lips.
“Yes, you always do, darling,” Jennifer replies, coyly, shooting her husband a wink.
“It is not hard when you are married to the perfect woman,” Jonathan says, kissing Jennifer behind her ears.
“Did I satisfy your every need?” Jennifer asks as Jonathan kisses below her neck while she rubs her fingers through his hair.
“You always satisfy my every need in and out of bed,” Jonathan replies, softly, kissing her under her chin. He makes his way down her neck, kissing Jennifer slowly as he takes his time. “I wish we could stay in bed all morning. I don’t need breakfast,” he says, gazing up at his wife with a mischievous grin.
“I am not hungry either,” Jennifer says, softly as she kisses her husband on the lips. “Who needs breakfast?” she asks seductively. “I don’t have an appetite after last night,” she says as Jonathan takes her in his arms.
They turn around and continue kissing. Jonathan wraps his arms around Jennifer’s waist and leans closer to her. Jennifer wraps her arms around her husband’s back, closing her eyes. Jonathan closes his eyes with their lips touching. The telephone on his side of the bed begins to ring.
Jonathan, without changing his position, reaches over and takes the phone off of the hook.
“We should be getting up, darling,” Jennifer replies, touching Jonathan’s neck gently with her hand. “Dad and Angelina will be expecting us for breakfast.”
“One more minute, darling. I don’t want to take my hands off of you,” Jonathan says, touching his wife’s back gently with his hand. He moves his hands smoothly down her back.
Max enters the bedroom shortly, interrupting their love-making right on cue. He is followed by Freeway, who is barking at them. He sits up, wagging his tail. Jonathan and Jennifer pull out of their embrace. They turn to face Max with a look.
“Max, it’s early in the morning!” Jennifer exclaims in surprise.
“Max, I can’t wait to hear your explanation,” Jonathan replies, showing a bit of annoyance at the interruption.
“Lieutenant Draper is on the phone,” Max says. “Didn’t you hear it ring?” he asks. His eyes come upon the telephone laying on the table, off of the hook. “Hey, did you know the telephone is off the hook, Mr. H?” Max asks, holding the receiver to hand to Jonathan.
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances. Jonathan reluctantly takes the call.
“Oh, your dad and Angelina are already downstairs, Mrs. H,” Max says, turning to face Jennifer. “Gus is gettin’ dressed now. Your guests are ready for breakfast.”
“We’ll be down just as soon as we get dressed,” Jennifer replies.
Max nods and starts to head out of the room with Freeway.
“I’ll get the water in the shower going,” Jennifer says, turning to Jonathan. She starts to exit the room, walking into the closet area on her side of the room.
Jonathan is still half-asleep, struggling to keep his eyes awake. He sighs as he lays his head against his pillow with the telephone still in his hand. Jonathan sighs before putting the receiver up to his ear.
“Good morning, Lieutenant Draper,” Jonathan says wearily, closing his eyes for a rest.
“Good morning, Jonathan. I’m sorry I woke you and Jennifer up,” Lieutenant Draper replies from the other end of the receiver. “I thought you wanted to know the latest. Someone broke into Jerad’s last night and stole the necklace from the safe. Jerad found a Santa Claus hat in its place.”
Jonathan’s eyelids open straight up after hearing the news.
Los Angeles Metropolitan Police Department
Lieutenant Draper sits at his desk, talking to Jonathan on the telephone. The police report is in a file in front of him.
“The district attorney thinks he has a stronger case against Gus now that the necklace hasn’t been recovered and the Santa hat was found in the safe. I think if he could, he would charge Gus with first-degree grand theft. Jerad ordered the trial to be held sooner than a week, and the prosecutor was happy to oblige. The DA’s office is waiting to hear back from the judge for the date.”
Hart House
Jonathan sits up in bed, shocked at the news the lieutenant just gave him. Water from the shower can be heard coming from the other room.
“From examining the scene of the crime, Jonathan, it looks like a professional thief broke into the galleria. He broke the glass in the door leading to Jerad’s office,” Lieutenant Draper continues as Jonathan listens attentively. “Does Gus have an alibi? The robbery was committed sometime between eleven and midnight.”
“Gus is staying with us. He spent the night in the guest house with Jennifer’s father. We didn’t go to bed until after eleven-thirty,” Jonathan replies, wide awake now. “How could the DA think he has a stronger case against Gus? Gus isn’t a professional thief. And even if he was, why would he leave a Santa hat behind after the necklace was found in his costume yesterday afternoon? That would be incriminating himself.”
Los Angeles Metropolitan Police Department
“I agree. I don’t believe Gus broke into Jerad’s last night any more than you do. A professional jewelry thief wouldn’t leave behind something that would give himself away. I don’t think the district attorney has a strong enough case to convict Gus. Even the jurors and the judge himself, I’m sure, could see he doesn’t have solid evidence to prove Gus is guilty. Jerad has been using the other thefts to influence his judgment,” Lieutenant Drapers says. “I just wanted you and Jennifer to know what is going on. The robbery won’t be in the newspapers. Jerad doesn’t want the thefts getting any more publicity.”
Hart House
“Thank you, lieutenant, for calling,” Jonathan replies into the mouthpiece. He sits up in bed and reaches across to place the receiver down on the hook.
Jonathan sits, pondering the latest news for a moment. He rises and heads toward the bathroom/shower on his side of the room. He passes the wardrobe area
and dressing room on his way. Jonathan walks into the room where Jennifer is in the shower, bathing. Jonathan stands across the shower.
“Darling, I have two dresses hanging on the door! Let me know which one you like best!” Jennifer shouts out over the water.
Jonathan walks over to the door and looks at the two dresses which are on hangers.
“Well?” Jennifer asks as Jonathan takes a few moments to try to make a decision. “Which one do you prefer?”
Jonathan takes the hangers down and holds the dresses side by side, trying to decide which one he prefers. One is a green dress and the other red.
“I like them both, darling!” Jonathan shouts back.
“Oh, you are a big help!” Jennifer shouts with a chuckle. “I’ll be out in a moment.”
“Why not wear two?” Jonathan asks. “You could wear the green dress for the morning, and the red one for the rest of the day,” he tells his wife, placing the hangers back on the door.
“Very funny!” Jennifer exclaims with a laugh.
“The colors match your eyes, so how can I make a decision considering the woman who owns them is my wife?” Jonathan asks with a smile, walking over to the shower.
“If that is the way you feel, I’ll wear the green dress today and the red one tomorrow,” Jennifer replies, turning the water off. “What did the lieutenant have to say?”
“The necklace was taken from Jerad’s safe last night. Someone broke into the store and left a Santa Claus hat behind. It looked like the work of a professional thief. The prosecutor thinks he has a stronger case against Gus now, and Jerad wants the trial to take place sooner than a week. The theft isn’t going to be in the papers. Jerad doesn’t want any more publicity concerning the robberies. Lieutenant Draper wanted us to know,” Jonathan says as Jennifer opens the shower door slightly.
“Hand me my robe, please,” Jennifer replies.
Jonathan walks over to the door and picks up the robe hanging from the back of the door. He walks over to his wife, who is drying herself off with a towel.
Jonathan holds the robe, ready for his wife to slip into. Jennifer steps out. Jonathan helps her into the garment.
“I can’t believe the necklace has been stolen again so soon,” Jennifer says in surprise, tying the robe as she turns around to face her husband.
“That is one thing that bothers me. The necklace was stolen yesterday in broad daylight with Jerad and me in the store. Then after it is returned safely, someone steals the necklace from the safe late at night after hours, and the thief happens to know Jerad placed the necklace in the safe?” Jonathan confides in his wife with a look of suspicion on his face and in his tone of voice.
“You think it was an inside job?” Jennifer asks.
“Hendricks was behaving strangely last night when I confronted Jerad. He appeared to be very nervous. He knocked some decorations over in the window display. He told Jerad his arthritis was acting up again.”
“That is strange. Why would someone with arthritis be putting up decorations as part of their job? People with arthritis don’t have a good grip on their hands. They often drop things,” Jennifer ponders.
“And Hendricks told me he had been away from the store due to a family emergency.”
“You think he was lying?” Jennifer asks, placing the towel on the shower.
“Hendricks acted like he just been caught with his hand in the cookie jar when I mentioned him being away.”
“It sounds like to me Hendricks put his hand in the safe to steal the necklace,” Jennifer replies, walking over to the door. She picks up the hanger with the dress she decided on for today.
“You know, darling, on second thought, I don’t think that dress matches with your eyes at all,” Jonathan replies with a serious look, turning to face Jennifer. His tone reveals he is teasing, however.
Jennifer turns around and gives her husband a look of annoyance.
“You did ask for my opinion,” Jonathan says, shrugging his shoulders with a smile on his face. His smile resembles a naughty child playing a joke on his parents.
Jennifer stares at Jonathan, knowing what her husband is up to. “You!” Jennifer exclaims, walking over to him with the hanger in hand. She points her finger at him and starts to say something when Jonathan grabs her unexpectedly around the arms. He pulls her into a kiss.
Jennifer drops the hanger to the floor and places her arms around her husband’s back. Jennifer kisses him before giving him a playful pat on the shoulder.
“Now, the dress, darling,” she tells him, giving him a serious look. “We have company waiting on us to join them for breakfast,” Jennifer says, picking up the hanger. “So help me into this
dress.” She hands Jonathan the hanger and kisses him on the lips. “Please,” Jennifer says with a wink.
Mickey Finley’s Office
Jonathan and Gus stand in the office facing the loan shark, Mickey Finley, who is seated behind his desk. Finley is a man who appears to be in his late seventies. Jonathan hands the envelope full of cash he deposited from his bank to Finley.
“I hope this will be the end of Gus’ association with you,” Jonathan says in a severe tone.
“You have a problem with Gus getting a loan from me?” Finley asks, sitting back in his chair with his feet on the desk, smoking a cigar. He has a gruff voice with a strong New York accent. “Gus paid his debt, so there is no need to be hostile,” the man says, opening the envelope. He takes out the cash and counts all the money.
Three heavy set men stand behind him, overseeing Jonathan and Gus.
“Your business isn’t legitimate, and you have been harassing and threatening Gus for weeks now,” Jonathan replies, showing contempt for the man.
“I operate a legitimate business,” Finley insists, sitting up. He removes his feet from his desk. “I never had mob connections, and I have no intention to. Gus is lucky he came to me instead of some other loan shark in my line of work.”
“You threatened to break his legs and hands if the money wasn’t paid in full,” Jonathan says, raising his voice.
“Scare tactics were all they were, Hart. In my business, they’re necessary. I loaned him money. It’s only fair that my customers repay the money. Speaking of tactics, since Gus brought a friend along, I am going to have to insist that my boys search you. Boys, give Mr. Hart a thorough search,” the man says, turning to the three men.
The three men walk over to Jonathan, who watches their every move along with a nervous Gus. They give Jonathan a body search. The men turn to their boss
after not finding any listening devices or weapons on him.
“He’s cleaned, Mr. Finley,” the first man replies.
“Good. Now, Jonathan Hart, there is just one more thing,” Finley says, placing his cigar in an ashtray.
“If you are thinking of charging me more interest, you’re crazy!” Gus exclaims, shooting Finley an angry look.
“Gus, shut your mouth, will you?” Finley asks, rising to his feet. “I can still have my men put some bruises on you!” he exclaims, sternly, turning to Gus. “No, what I was thinking of was doing business with Hart here,” Finley explains, walking over to Jonathan.
“My bank handles all my loans,” Jonathan replies.
“Cute! Very cute!” Finley exclaims, approaching him. “I thought since you paid Gus’ debt that allows me some leeway,” he says, placing his hands in the pockets of his suit. “I think it is only fair since you got Gus out of the hole he dug himself into, I should charge you for interest. I want another thousand. No, make that two thousand. What do you say?” Finley asks with a devious smile.
“As you would say, Finley, no dice,” Jonathan replies, calmly, eyeing Finley.
“No, Hart, if you want to get out of here in one piece, I suggest you pay, or my boys are going to make you look like you got attacked by some hoodlums in an alleyway. I don’t want to have to hurt you with Christmas just around the corner.”
Jonathan gives Finley an angry look. He takes him by the collar and shoves him against a wall.
“Now, you listen to me, Finley, and you listen good,” Jonathan says, pinning him against the wall. “If you dare to lay a hand on Gus or me, you’re the one who is going to need a doctor!” he exclaims, heatedly. Jonathan glares at him, holding onto Finley tightly. “You’re lucky I didn’t report you to the police! I didn’t want to risk putting Gus’ life in danger! If you attempt to harm him, me, my wife, or anyone else, you will be spending Christmas behind a jail cell!!!”
Jonathan is boiling with rage as Gus watches nervously. He and Finley exchange angry looks. Jonathan finally takes his hands off of him. Finley sighs in relief at being able to breathe again after enduring Jonathan’s wrath.
“Let’s go, Gus,” Jonathan says calmly, turning around to face him.
Jonathan and Gus start toward the office door. Finley turns to the three men and gives them the signal by nodding his head. The three men lunge toward Gus and Jonathan, taking them by surprise. Finley watches calmly and with a smirk as Jonathan and Gus find themselves being attacked. The men shove Jonathan and Gus toward a wall. They plan to beat them. Just as the first man attempts to take his fist toward Jonathan’s stomach, Jonathan takes a swing at him. He falls. Jonathan starts to come to Gus’ rescue when the man rises to his feet. He grabs hold of Jonathan, placing his arm around his neck from behind him. Jonathan kicks the man in the stomach with his feet as hard as he can.
“OUCH!!!” the man exclaims, wincing in pain, letting go of him.
Jonathan turns around and shoves the man toward the door. The man flies toward the door and falls onto his back under the doorknob. He attempts to sit up when the knob hits his head.
Finley is outraged that Jonathan fought one of his men off. Jonathan rushes over to Gus, who is being beaten in the ribs. Jonathan grabs the second man by his arm and takes his fist to his face. He knocks him out cold. The third man and Finley taking action, come toward Jonathan.
“Jonathan, behind you!” Gus yells out to Jonathan in panic. Gus is wincing over in pain but is not seriously injured.
Jonathan turns just in time to see Finley and the third man coming toward him. Before he can take any action to defend himself, they shove Jonathan toward a wall. They pin him to the wall. Finley reaches into his pocket and takes out a switchblade.
“Now I ask you again, Hart! Are you going to pay me two thousand dollars? Or I am I going to have to use this switchblade to convince you?” he asks menacingly, showing Jonathan the knife in his hand.
“No,” Jonathan says firmly, struggling to break loose.
Finley turns to the heavy. “All right, Hart! Let’s see how you react to this blade!” he exclaims, pressing a button. The blade springs out. Just as he is about to stab Jonathan in the stomach, the door opens. Jennifer walks in.
“Darling, are you-?” Jennifer starts to ask when she sees her husband in danger. A look of fear comes over her face. “JONATHAN!” she yells.
Finley and his men are distracted by Jennifer’s sudden entrance. They turn to face her.
“Mrs. Jonathan Hart, take a seat!” Finley orders, politely. “I’ll be right with you just as soon as I show your husband I mean business,” he says just as
Jonathan grabs hold of Finley’s other arm.
Jonathan manages to kick Finley hard in the stomach with one of his feet. Finley falls backward, landing on his back. The knife drops just inches away from his shoulder. Jonathan quickly picks up the knife and aims the blade toward the heavy.
“Get down on the ground next to Finley and don’t move,” Jonathan orders.
Reluctantly the heavy gets down on his knees and hands next to his boss and lies down without moving. Jonathan continues eying the men, holding the blade toward their direction as Jennifer helps Gus up to his feet. Jennifer and Gus start toward the door with Jonathan behind them. Just as they reach the doorway, Jonathan throws the knife toward a dartboard on the wall behind the desk. The knife lands in the middle of the dartboard.
“And I haven’t played darts since we were in England,” Jonathan says, looking at the knife, impressed at his accomplishment.
They rush out of the office with Jennifer shutting the door. Jonathan, Jennifer, and Gus start to run down the hall.
“What happened?” Jennifer asks.
“Let’s just say Finley didn’t like the way I handled the transaction,” Jonathan replies. “Were you just in the neighborhood?” he asks, turning to his wife.
“No, dad wanted to go to lunch in Beverly Hills. I told him I had an errand to run first. He’s waiting for us now.”
“I have a feeling it’s going to be a long wait.”
Meanwhile, in Finley’s office, two of his goons are coming through.
“Let’s get them!” Finley orders, rising to his feet along with the third man.
The three men are behind Finley fast. Finley throws the door open, and they run through the hall.
Jonathan, Jennifer, and Gus are running through a corridor on the floor as Finley and the three heavies are rushing towards them. They hear the footsteps.
Jonathan, noticing another hall, runs in that direction with Jennifer and Gus behind him. The building contains other offices. Jonathan sees a bucket of water up ahead. Jennifer and Gus continue
to run with Finley and his men, still chasing them.
Jonathan stops and picks up the bucket. He ducks behind a corner out of sight. Finley and his thugs stop running. They look around carefully. Jonathan is hiding in front of a door with the bucket. Just as Finley and the heavies are coming his way, he turns around. Jonathan, holding the bucket over, splashes the water onto the floor. He drops the bucket and ducks out of sight. Finley and the men are so busy looking that they do not notice the water. They lose their balance and fall to the ground on their back. Jonathan smiles and starts to run off just as a maid bumps into him.
“I’m sorry about the extra work,” Jonathan says, facing the woman. “You better get your mop,” he tells her, brushing past.
Jonathan is catching up to his wife and Gus as they are running in another corridor.
“Jennifer!” Jonathan exclaims, running up to his wife.
“What were you doing?” Jennifer asks in surprise with a look of wonder.
“I gave Finley and his men what they needed: a bath,” Jonathan replies.
Finley and his men are running through the corridor. Their suits are dripping wet. Finley is boiling with rage by now.
Jonathan, Jennifer, and Gus are running toward the elevators. An elevator opens, and a woman steps off. They get on the elevator. Jonathan presses the button for the parking garage just as Finley and the men are running toward them. The elevator doors close in their face. A few moments later, Jonathan, Jennifer, and Gus step into the garage. They stop to catch their breath.
“Where did you park the car, darling?” Jennifer asks, out of breath.
“The first floor, darling.”
“Of course you did,” Jennifer replies, rolling her eyes.
Finley and the men step off of the elevator. The Harts and Gus are running toward the first level. Jennifer turns around and notices them.
“Jonathan!” Jennifer exclaims.
Jonathan turns around and sees they are still being chased. “That’s the last time I park on the first level,” Jonathan remarks, looking at his wife.
Finley and the three men stop running. They watch Jonathan, Jennifer, and Gus still running for their lives.
“Come on! We’ll run them down!” Finley orders, heading over to a car.
The three heavies head over to the vehicle and get in. Finley, starting the engine, has a look of a madman as he speeds up the engine. He is going over the speed limit. He drives the car out of the parking space. Finley, moving the vehicle forward, hits the bumper of a car behind him in his haste. The bumper is severely damaged.
Jonathan, Jennifer, and Gus are still running. They hear Finley’s vehicle behind them. They turn to see Finley is deliberately driving toward them, intending to run them down.
“Let’s take cover!” Jonathan exclaims. He grabs Jennifer by the arm.
Jennifer grabs Gus. They run up to a parked vehicle. All of them get down on their hands and knees in front of the door. Finley steps on the brakes and begins to turn his car around. Jonathan glances up and sees someone left their key in the ignition. Jonathan, keeping himself out of sight, quietly opens the door.
“Stay here,” Jonathan says, getting into the driver’s seat.
“What are you doing?” Jennifer asks, looking up at her husband with concern.
“Stay down,” Jonathan orders as he starts the engine.
Finley is slowing driving his car around, looking for the Harts and Gus.
“Do you see them anywhere?” Finley asks, impatiently.
“No,” one of his three men replies with frustration.
Jonathan starts to back out of the parking space when Finley’s car is approaching. He steps on the gas. The vehicle backs out rapidly before the loan shark can bring his car to a stop. Just as Finley is about to crash into the side, Jonathan rolls out of the car seat to safety. He hits the vehicle as Jonathan hurries over to Jennifer and Gus. Jonathan takes his wife by the hand, and they take off with Gus following behind.
Finley is burning with rage. He flings open his door and storms out. He walks over to see how badly damaged the car is he smashed.
Once reaching the first floor, the Harts and Gus rush over to the Mercedes. Jonathan unlocks the car and opens the door to the driver’s side of the vehicle.
Jennifer gets in the passenger seat while Gus is forced to climb into the back. She shuts her door as Jonathan starts the engine. Just as Jonathan is driving their car toward the exit, Finley’s vehicle appears behind them. Jonathan, stepping on the gas, results in the car speeding toward the gate. The ticket attendant is almost run down. The Mercedes crashes through the gate as Jennifer looks on in shock.
Jonathan turns right onto the street without signaling. A car honks their horn at him. Finley’s car almost knocks down the attendant and crashes through what is left of the gate. He turns his vehicle right without signaling. A car honks the horn at him.
Jonathan is driving the Mercedes toward Rodeo Drive minutes later.
“I’m going to pull up at Strickland Plaza. Gus, I want you to stay down and call Lieutenant Draper,” Jonathan says.
“I will, but what are you going to do?” Gus asks in a panic.
“Yes, what are we going to do, darling?” Jennifer asks, turning to her husband.
“We are going to take Finley and his men on a chase through the plaza,” Jonathan replies.
Once again, Finley is on their tail. Jonathan drives straight on through Rodeo Drive, heading straight toward the mall. The street and sidewalks are crowded with people doing their last-minute Christmas shopping. Jonathan is lucky to drive without causing an accident. He pulls the Mercedes up to the curb at Strickland Plaza. Gus gets down from his seat and takes cover in the back. Jonathan and Jennifer hurry out of the car as Finley pulls his vehicle to a stop behind the Mercedes.
Jonathan and Jennifer run toward the plaza. They fling open the doors. The couple continues running. Finley gets out of his car along with the three
heavies. He snaps his fingers, signaling to them to look around for Gus. The three men nodding, begin looking around. Finley rushes toward Strickland Plaza. Finley, flinging open the doors,
rushes into the mall. He notices Jonathan and Jennifer hurrying toward an escalator leading up to the second floor.
Finley runs after them, determined to catch up to them. He pushes and shoves customers out of the way, making his way toward the escalators. Jonathan and Jennifer are running up an escalator. They push their way through the crowd. Once reaching the second floor, Jonathan and Jennifer step off. Finley is now pushing and shoving people out of his way as he runs up the escalator. Jonathan and Jennifer are looking around for a place to run to. They see a crowd of people in one of the stores.
Just as they rush toward the store, Finley comes up behind them. Finley, using his whole body, lunges towards Jonathan. Jonathan loses his balance and falls to the ground. Jennifer stops running and turns to see what happened. She watches in alarm as Finley and Jonathan start throwing punches at each other. Finley attempts to choke Jonathan. Jennifer, using her purse, starts to hit Finley on his back repeatedly.
Jonathan breaks free from his tight grip around his neck. He starts to hit him in the face with his fist just as Finley ducks. Finley grabs Jonathan by the
collar and smacks him hard in the face. Jonathan’s tie falls to the ground. Finley, continuing to hold Jonathan by the collar, starts to carry him over to the balcony overlooking the first
floor.
“JONATHAN!” Jennifer screams, fearing for her husband’s life. She rushes over and watches in horror as they approach the balcony.
Jonathan breaks loose from Finley’s grip again and shoves his fist in his face. He ducks just in time as Finley attempts to take a swing at him. A look of fear crossing over Finley’s face, finds himself losing his balance. Jonathan tries to grab hold of him to save him.
Instead, Finley, screaming in fear, goes flying over the side. Jennifer rushes up to her husband’s side. She and Jonathan look at each other in horror as Finley falls to his death on the first floor below. There are chilling screams. Crowds of people behind the couple come rushing up to see what happened.
Jonathan and Jennifer turn to face each other in shock.
A while later, Jonathan and Jennifer are standing on the first floor near the doors talking to Lieutenant Draper, who arrived on the scene. The lieutenant is talking to two of his men who stand facing the door. They are controlling the crowds who have come to gaze upon where Finley’s body fell.
“Everyone settle down, and please move along now,” Lieutenant Draper says, addressing the crowds. “It’s all over. Please go about your business. I’m afraid Strickland is going to be closed for the rest of the day.”
The crowd starts to break up and leave the mall as the lieutenant walks over to Jonathan and Jennifer. As the people walk through the doors, Gus walks in. An officer turns to Gus and approaches him.
“I’m sorry, sir, but you’ll have to leave. There’s been a fatal fall. The plaza is going to be closed for the rest of the day,” he tells Gus.
“That’s all right, sergeant,” Lieutenant Draper replies, turning to them. “He can come on through.”
The officer stands aside and lets Gus through. He walks over to Jonathan, Jennifer, and the lieutenant.
“What happened?” Gus asks in a panic. “I heard police sirens and saw an ambulance.”
“Finley is dead, Gus,” Jennifer replies, calmly. “He fell to his death from the second floor. He was trying to kill Jonathan when he slipped and went over the balcony.”
Gus gasps in shock. “Oh, my God!” he exclaims, horrified, at learning what happened to the loan shark.
“Jonathan, why didn’t you contact the police about Finley threatening Gus?” Lieutenant Draper asks, turning to him.
“I was going to contact you just as soon we knew Gus was safe. We didn’t want to risk putting his life in danger,” Jonathan replies.
“After all you told me about Finley’s attempts to kill, I can understand your decision.”
“As much as I hate to say it, at least Finley won’t harm or threaten anyone ever again,” Jennifer says with a sigh.
“We had been investigating Mickey Finley for quite some time now,” Lieutenant Draper replies. “He was one of those loan-sharks who appeared to be working legitimately. The man had threatened bodily-harm to many of his customers. His threats are what brought our attention to him.”
“Why didn’t you arrest him?” Jennifer asks.
“He didn’t attempt to harm anyone, and those customers didn’t want us to take any action. They were too afraid of Finley. Those three men of his are already cooperating with us. They're going to give us a statement just soon as they are taken down to the station. Gus, I’ll need you to come down with me to the station to get a statement from you. Strickland is about to close up,” the lieutenant says, turning to Gus.
“By all means, that’s fine with me. I want those rats to face time behind prison where they belong,” Gus replies in disgust. “Will I be facing any other charges?”
“No, Gus, that is one thing you won’t have to worry about,” Lieutenant Draper says as they start to walk out of the plaza along with the other
officers.
“Jonathan, Jennifer, I don’t have the words to describe how sorry I am for getting you involved in my troubles!” Gus exclaims with disappointment.
“Don’t think about that,” Jonathan assures him as Jennifer places a comforting hand on Gus’ shoulder. “Lieutenant Draper, Jennifer, and I will pick Gus up at the station. We’re heading down to Jerad’s now to investigate the robbery,” he says, turning to face the officer.
“Oh, that reminds me of something I forgot to mention to you over the telephone this morning,” Lieutenant Draper replies, turning to Jonathan. “The front door was left untouched. The thief got in without causing any damage.”
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances. Gus walks away, leaving Jonathan and Jennifer alone. He follows Lieutenant Draper over to his car.
“A thief breaks in without causing damage?” Jennifer asks with disbelief, turning to Jonathan. “Sounds more like someone just walked in and helped themself to the necklace.”
Jerad’s Galleria Of Grand Jewels
Jonathan and Jennifer walk in. The guard greets them as they look around for the owner. The store is full of customers being waited on.
“Oh, good afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Hart,” one of the male salesmen says, turning to Jonathan and Jennifer as they walk over. “Mr. Jerad is in his office. He’ll be out in a minute.”
“Thanks,” Jonathan replies as they look around. He and Jennifer take a look at some jewels on display. Jennifer’s eyes come upon the new pieces with pearls that her husband saw Jerad put on display along with the missing necklace.
“Oh, how beautiful!” Jennifer exclaims, looking down at the matching earrings and bracelet. “Could I have a look at the earrings, please?” Jennifer asks, looking up to face one of the salesmen.
“Certainly, Mrs. Hart,” the salesman replies with a smile, opening the counter.
“Can’t you wait for Christmas?” Jonathan asks, turning to face his wife as the salesman takes out the case containing the earrings. “You’ll never know what Santa may bring you,” he says with a smile.
“Oh, I just wanted to take a look at the earrings, darling,” Jennifer replies as she takes out the earrings.
“How is business?” Jonathan asks as Jennifer puts the earrings on while staring at herself in the mirror.
“Business has been slow since the robberies,” the salesman replies, leaning over to tell Jonathan so the other customers wouldn’t hear what he had to say. “With Christmas coming up in a few weeks, we’ve gotten more customers in. You never would guess sales were down since we got a crowd in here.” He turns to an older lady, walking over to the counter. “Yes, how may I be of help?”
“Could I take a look at the bracelet right there, please?” the elderly woman asks, pointing to a bracelet in front of her.
“Of course,” the salesman replies, opening the counter.
“Could I be of some help, Jonathan?” Hendricks asks, walking into the store from an office.
“No, thank you. I need to talk to Jerad,” Jonathan replies as Jennifer admires the earrings.
Hendricks smiles and walks away. Jennifer takes the earrings off and hands them back to the salesman after placing them back in their case.
“Thank you!” Jennifer exclaims with a warm smile.
“You’re welcome, Mrs. Hart. Should I put the earrings aside for you?”
“They are lovely, but I’m going along with Jonathan. I may never know what I may find wrapped under our tree,” Jennifer replies with a smile as she and Jonathan exchange glances.
The salesman starts to put the earrings back just as Jerad walks into the store, wearing glasses.
“Oh, I’m surprised to see you here, Jonathan, Jennifer,” Jerad says with a smile, approaching the Harts.
“We are not here to buy jewelry. Jennifer and I were just wondering if you could show us how your alarm system works,” Jonathan replies, turning around to face him along with Jennifer.
“Oh, I see. I suppose the lieutenant called you up about the necklace,” Jerad says, softly. “Since you and Jennifer had been loyal customers in the past, I believe that is the least I could do,” he replies, managing a smile. “Come with me,” he tells the Harts. “I’ll be back in a moment. I’m just going to demonstrate to the Harts how our alarm system works,” Jerad says, turning to the salesman, showing the woman the bracelet. “Continue to keep your eyes on the jewels, please.”
“Yes, Mr. Jerad.”
“Just follow me to my office, please,” Jerad tells Jonathan and Jennifer as he heads towards his office.
Jonathan and Jennifer follow Jerad into his office. Jerad shuts the door after they walk in. Jonathan and Jennifer see the broken glass in the door.
“Someone is coming in this afternoon to replace the glass,” Jerad tells them, walking over to the wall where the safe is located.
Jonathan and Jennifer look over the door, examining it discreetly while Jerad’s back is towards them. Hendricks is passing by on his way to his office across Jerad's. He stops and watches the Harts with great interest as their eyes are on the doorknob now. Hendricks continues observing them for a moment as they casually glance around the room. He walks away just as Jerad starts to turn his back. Jonathan and Jennifer stand still, acting naturally as the store owner turns to face them.
“Now, what I am about to show is a special security system designed to detect burglars and to notify the police the instant anyone steps into the galleria when the store is closed. I always have Hendricks turn the security system on.”
“Does anyone else know how the security system works?” Jennifer asks.
“Other than Hendricks and myself no. The alarm I turned on the other day when Gus-’’Jerad starts to say before catching himself. “Pardon me. The thief took the necklace from the case is only used for emergencies. Like the robbery, you witnessed yourself, Jonathan, and when jewels have been found missing after shoplifters had left. I had an expert in alarm systems brought in all the way from Europe. He installed them in every one of my stores nationwide. He is flying in tomorrow to install cameras throughout the store. The insurance company has insisted that I take extra precautions after the necklace was taken. From now on, every customer, before leaving the store, will be combed before being permitted to leave. Having a guard on duty at all times is not enough for them. Frankly, I don’t blame them. A guard has failed me. Someone walks into Jerad’s and takes a pearl necklace when he isn’t looking.”
“I wonder why a thief is only interested in a pearl necklace,” Jonathan comments.
“I would think rhinestones or diamonds would be their preference,” Jennifer replies. “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, as we all know.”
Jerad shrugs his shoulders. “The insurance company told me if these robberies don’t stop soon, they’re going to bring in an insurance investigator. I thought the police could find out who is committing these robberies, but they haven’t found one single clue connecting last night’s robbery to the other thefts in my chain of stores. The insurance company wants to stop making the thefts a habit. They are going to cancel my insurance policy if the thefts don’t stop after the start of the new year.”
“Why didn’t you have the insurance investigator take over? The police can only do so much, Jerad,” Jonathan says.
“I talked it over with Hendricks before making the decision. We both decided not to risk a panic among the customers,” Jerad replies. “I know that sounds foolish, but I value my customers.”
“So I’ve heard,” Jennifer says with uncertainty, thinking about Jerad’s refusal to postpone Gus’ trial.
“Now on with the demonstration,” Jerad continues.
Jonathan and Jennifer walk over as Jerad opens a secret panel in the wall. They watch as Jared presses a switch with a label underneath that says, “OFFICE.” Instantly the door locks and bolts itself from inside. Jonathan and Jennifer turn to face the door. Immediately Jerad turns a switch with a label that reads, “VOLUME CONTROL,” just as a roaring sound of an alarm begins.
“Can the volume be turned down all the way?” Jennifer asks.
“No, it can only be turned down to this level and no lower,” Jerad replies, raising his voice a little. He turns another switch that says, “ALARM OFF.”
“You didn’t have to start the alarm. Now, the police will be on their way,” Jonathan says.
“No, and I won’t be receiving a call from them either. The alarm may go off instantly someone breaks in, but it takes less than a minute before the police are notified. It was designed that way so it could be demonstrated directly after being installed without starting a false alarm,” Jerad replies before pointing out some switches. The following switches are labeled, “FRONT DOOR”, “STORE,” “BACKDOOR.” Jerad closes the panel. “The switches I just showed will cause an alarm to go off everywhere in the galleria, even Hendricks' office. I just set them all on when I’m ready to close up shop,” he says with a smile, turning back to the Harts.
“Why all the switches, Jerad?” Jennifer asks.
“I didn’t think to ask Cardwell that. One thing is for sure he is a unique designer,” Jerad says, taking off his glasses.
“Cardwell as in Filberate Cardwell?” Jonathan asks.
“Yes.”
“Do you know him, darling?” Jennifer asks, turning to her husband.
“No, but I have heard of him, darling,” Jonathan replies, turning to his wife. “He’s one of the top security experts in Europe.”
“One of the best experts in Europe, Jonathan, to be exact,” Jerad informs him. "I saw the police heading toward Strickland," he mentions, pressing the office switch again. The door is now heard being unlocked and unbolted from inside. "What happened?" Jerad asks, closing the panel.
"A loan shark, Mickey Finley, fell to his death from the second floor. He was attempting to throw Jonathan over the balcony," Jennifer replies, waiting to see Jerad's reaction.
Hendricks is walking by with some sparkling diamond jewels in a case when he overhears what Jennifer told the owner. He turns to look at the Harts when he loses his balance, falling to the floor along with the case. The jewels, coming out of the case, land everywhere nearby.
Jonathan, Jennifer, and Jerad turn to see what happened. Jerad sighs in frustration. He and the Harts watch Hendricks lift himself up and place the jewelry back in the case before walking back into the store. Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances, their latest suspicion of Hendricks aroused.
The salesman opens the door and sticks his head in. “Pardon me, Mr. Jerad, but a lady I am waiting on insists on speaking to you. I just showed her the pearl bracelet and earrings. She asked about a matching necklace. I told her it was out of stock. She is only interested in a necklace. I can’t interest her in any other necklaces that arrived this week. I pardon for interrupting, Mr. and Mrs. Hart, but the woman has her mind made up. I admire customers who can make up their minds, but she goes on and on about how much she adores pearls.”
“Don’t worry. The Harts were leaving. Tell her I’ll be right there,” Jerad replies calmly. “Excuse me,” he says, walking past Jonathan and Jennifer. He walks out of the office, following the salesman.
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances. “I guess that’s our cue to leave,” Jennifer replies, turning to face her husband.
Hart House That Afternoon
Jonathan, Jennifer, Max, Steven, and Gus walk into the foyer late that afternoon. Max shuts the door behind them.
“I enjoyed lunch,” Steven says as they start to walk into the living room. “But, Jonathan, you should have let me paid,” he adds, turning to face his son-in-law.
“Dad, you are our guest. Besides, you don’t come to visit us often,” Jennifer replies, turning to face her father.
“From now on, things will be different. Now that I am officially a United States citizen again, it’s about time I spend more time with my daughter and son-in-law,” Steven says, turning to face his daughter. I spent more than enough time away. The time I could have spent with my family. I hope you and Jonathan will visit me more often. Now that I have a home and Jonathan has a division for federal services in Washington, the family home in Hillhaven won’t be the only place you can visit your old man.”
“You’ll always have a home with us too,” Jennifer says, warmly, kissing her father on the cheek.
“Steven, I promise I’ll bring Jennifer down more often,” Jonathan replies, placing his hand on his father-in-law’s shoulder. “And don’t worry about the check. You can treat us to dinner one night. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to make a phone call,” he says, turning to face Steven and his wife.
“Go right ahead,” Steven says as Jonathan heads to the telephone on the desk.
“Dad, you never told me how you occupy your time. How is Walter?” Jennifer asks as she and her father take a seat on the couch.
Angelina takes a seat across from them.
“When you are my age, darling, there isn’t much a man can do. Walter is fine. He sends his regards.”
“Come on, Gus,” Max says, turning to his friend. “We can play cards in the kitchen. I’ll teach you a game where money ain’t once mentioned.”
He leads his friend to the door leading to the kitchen from the living room. They walk out of the room as Jonathan is talking to someone on the telephone. The guests become engaged in conversation all at once.
“Arnold, I’m sure you have heard of Jerad’s,” Jonathan says into the receiver.
“The jewelry galleria on Rodeo Drive?” Arnold asks. “Yes, sir. I’ve heard of it. My wife has been there numerous times. We are both alarmed by the robberies occurring across his chain of stores,” he replies from the other end of the line.
“Just a moment,” Jonathan replies, struggling to hear his employee over the loud discussions going on behind him. He places his hand on the receiver and turns around to face his wife’s family.
“Darling, could you quiet it down? I’m trying to speak to Arnold about looking into Jerad’s.”
Jennifer, Steven, and Angelina are so preoccupied they do not hear Jonathan addressing his wife. Jonathan continues looking at them for a few more moments.
“Oh, don’t mind me. Carry on with your conversations,” Jonathan says to the assembled group.
“Are you there, sir?” Arnold asks as Jonathan takes his hand off of the mouthpiece.
“Yes, Arnold. I just lost a little of my hearing is all,” Jonathan replies in good humor. He places his hand on his other ear to try to block out the voices. "Now, about Jerad’s, Jennifer and I are alarmed too, but for a personal reason. I want you to look into Jerad’s and all of his employees,” Jonathan replies. “But, I am particularly interested in Jerad’s partner, Hendricks.”
“You don’t think that man could be behind the thefts?” Arnold asks in shock.
“I admit we don’t have much to go on, but a theory. Jennifer and I have a good reason for suspecting him. The man’s been acting too nervous for comfort.”
Hart House That Night
Jonathan, Jennifer, Steven, and Angelina are sitting around that night, enjoying a glass of Brandy after dinner.
“I’m so glad you decided to sell your home in Portland to move back to Maryland to be near dad,” Jennifer says with a smile, sitting next to Angelina on the couch.
“After selling the business, I didn’t see any reason to stay in Portland. I don’t have fond memories there, especially after my bitter divorce,” Angelina replies, taking a sip of the Brandy.
“I know that was such a hard time for you, but look at it this way, sweetie. You ended up becoming a very independent woman on your own,” Jennifer says with comfort, placing a hand on her niece’s hand.
“Yes, I have. I am enjoying being single. However, if I met someone like Jonathan, I may be interested in marriage again.”
“If you do, I’d be surprised. Jonathan is a one of a kind,” Jennifer says with a smile, looking over at her husband.
Jonathan is engaging in war stories with her dad at the bar.
“Enough about me. What’s been going on with you and Jonathan?” Angelina asks.
“Other than staying busy and traveling, we don't do much of anything. I do some charity work occasionally, raising donations and awareness about wildlife. I’m in charge of developing fundraisers; that is when I can find the time,” Jennifer replies with a chuckle, amused at her last choice of words.
“Look at them. I swear my daughter and her first cousin's daughter could spend all night talking,” Steven says. He turns to look at Jennifer and Angelina, getting caught up on their lives. “They are like teenagers when they are together though I suppose all women talk a lot,” he adds, turning back to Jonathan.
“Jennifer and Angelina are very close,” Jonathan replies with a smile, finishing up his glass.
“Yes, they are more like aunt and niece though I think they could be sisters if they were closer to the same age.”
“More Brandy?” Jonathan asks, placing his glass down.
“No, thanks, Jonathan. My doctor says, at my age, a man should watch his liquor, and I couldn’t agree with him more.”
“Is that one reason you prefer wine, Steven?” Jonathan asks, putting the bottle of Brandy away.
“That is one reason. Wine is good for the body, but I grew up with wine. Since you are in the industry, I don’t have to tell you how much wine is popular. My dad and grandfather drank nothing but wine when I was growing up. I am glad Jennifer inherited my love of wine. I know I must be boring you with first about my time in the war and now the topic of wine.”
"No, you’re not boring me at all. I enjoy hearing stories about the war. I was a Navy pilot.”
“Ever regret giving it up?”
“No,” Jonathan replies. “I would never have met your daughter if I stayed in the Navy,” he says with a smile.
Steven chuckles. “I don’t know about the women, but I’m going to retire to bed.”
He steps off of the stool and approaches his daughter. “I’m going to retire to bed now.”
“All right, dad. Goodnight,” Jennifer replies, leaning over to kiss him. “Sleep well.”
“You too, darling,” Steven says with a smile. “Now, don’t you keep Jonathan up all night talking. Some people like to get some sleep around here.”
Angelina and Jennifer smile at her dad’s last remark. “We won’t. Jonathan and I are going to sample the eggnog just as soon as Angelina goes to bed. Max wants our thoughts before he serves it on Christmas Day.”
Steven walks out of the living room and heads toward the door.
“If you are on planning on tasting the eggnog, I better leave you and Jonathan alone. I’m getting sleepy myself,” Angelina confesses, placing her glass down on the coffee table. “Goodnight,” she says, kissing Jennifer on the cheek.
“Goodnight,” Jennifer replies.
The door to the kitchen opens. Max sticks his head in.
"The eggnog is ready for tastin', Mr. and Mrs. H," Max says with a smile.
Jonathan and Jennifer head into the kitchen. Max walks ahead of them. He walks over to the preparation area where there are three small glasses of homemade eggnog with nutmeg over the top.
"I thought Gus was going to help you prepare the eggnog," Jennifer comments, picking up a glass along with Jonathan.
“Gus is takin’ Finley’s death hard,” Max says with concern, turning to Jennifer. “I tried assurin’ him he ain’t responsible for that’s rat’s death.”
“I think Gus is just in shock, Max,” Jonathan replies.
“Gus did have an unpleasant experience with Finley attempting to kill us. Someone falling to their death is enough to make anyone feel uneasy,” Jennifer says, tasting the eggnog.
“Gus would feel more tense if he had witnessed the fall,” Jonathan adds, tasting the eggnog. “Speaking of people on edge, Jerad’s partner, Hendricks, has been acting tense,” he says, looking up at Max.
“And with good reason, Mr. H,” Max replies. “He is over his head in debts.”
Jonathan and Jennifer turn to Max in surprise, taking a break from sampling the eggnog.
“How do you know?” Jennifer asks.
“I saw him down at the racetrack. That guy doesn’t know how to pick ‘em. Every horse he has placed a bet on has lost.”
“I wonder why he was nervous when he overheard us tell Jerad about Finley’s death. Now that he is dead, he won’t have to worry about being harassed and threatened.”
“Finley has a buddy who is a loan shark himself. Only he ain’t in Los Angeles. His office is several hours away. He and Finley were like that,” Max says, crossing two of his fingers. “His death will make Hendricks' life even more unbearable.”
“How so?” Jonathan asks.
“He is sentimental. Once he gets word of Finley’s death, he will be attempted to hurt or bump Hendricks off any day now.”
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances. They take another sip of the eggnog.
"What do you think? Ain't enough alcohol?" Max asks.
"There is enough. What brand of liquor did you use?"
"Bourbon."
"Eggnog tastes just right. I say you got it ready for Christmas Day," Jonathan replies with a smile, impressed. "What do you think, darling?" he asks, turning to Jennifer, who is drinking her entire glass.
Jennifer stops drinking the remaining eggnog with a smile. She is tipsy from the Bourbon. She is laughing.
"One more round, Max!" Jennifer exclaims, holding the glass up. She can't stop laughing hysterically. She hiccups as Max takes the glass.
Jennifer, passing out, lands on the floor. Freeway walks over to her and begins licking her on the face. Jonathan turns to Max who is staring at Jennifer, stunned.
"On second thought,Max, I think you put enough Bourbon to make everyone intoxicated," Jonathan says.
Max picks up a glass and takes a sip.
"Oh, I forgot to thin out the booze with some extra cream!" Max exclaims in disappointment, looking at the eggnog in his glass.
Jonathan places his glass down on the preparation area.
"Before you thin out the booze, help me carry Mrs. H up to bed," Jonathan replies.
Hart Industries The Next Day
Jonathan sits at his desk that afternoon, finishing up dictating a letter to Kelly Waring, his secretary.
“And sign it, Jonathan Hart,” Jonathan says.
“Yes, sir,” Kelly replies with a pencil and pad in hand. She finishes writing the final words to the letter.
“Thank you, Kelly. That will be all for now. Go on to lunch.”
“Thank you,” Kelly replies with a smile, rising to her feet. “Should I bring you anything back?”
Just as Jonathan opens his mouth to reply, the door to the office opens. Jennifer sticks her head in.
“Surprise, darling,” Jennifer says with a warm smile, holding onto the doorknob.
“Well, hello, darling,” Jonathan replies, delighted his wife stopped by.
Jennifer walks into the room and shuts the door behind her. Jonathan walks over to her and kisses her on the lips.
“Am I interrupting anything?” Jennifer asks, noticing Kelly behind her.
“No, I just finished dictating a letter. What are you doing here? I thought you would be having lunch with Steven and Angelina.”
“Dad decided he wanted them to spend the day together alone. Max is giving them a tour of the sights. Are you free for lunch?”
“I am always free for lunch with my wife,” Jonathan replies with a smile, taking Jennifer in his arms.
Jennifer smiles as she kisses Jonathan. Kelly smiling, heads out the door. She shuts it on her way out.
“Where shall we go to lunch?” Jennifer asks, placing her arms around her husband’s neck.
“How about we have lunch right here? That way, we will have privacy. You and I barely had alone time together,” Jonathan replies with a sly smile.
Jennifer gives her husband a sly grin and kisses him on the lips. Just then, the door opens, and Arnold walks in. He is preoccupied that he doesn’t bother to notice Jonathan and Jennifer want to be alone.
“Mr. Hart, I haven’t been able to get that information you wanted yet,” Arnold says, frantically.
“What information?” Jonathan asks his mind somewhere else from the tone of his voice.
“That information you requested on Jerad and his employees, sir,” Arnold reminds him. “The computer is broken. I won’t be able to get anyone to fix it until tomorrow. I apologize for the delay,” he says regretfully.
“Don’t worry about it, Arnold. That information can wait,” Jonathan replies as he and Jennifer turn around to face him. “By the way, I don’t need information on Hendricks now. Max knows him from the track, so he was able to fill us in. I only need the information on Jerad and the rest of his employees.”
“Yes, sir. I’ll get that information to you the moment I get my hands on it,” Arnold replies in a tone that shows business comes first. “Oh, good afternoon, Mrs. Hart,” he says, just now noticing Jennifer.
“Good afternoon, Arnold,” Jennifer says as she and Jonathan exchange glances.
Arnold opens the door and walks out of the office, shutting the door behind him.
“Now, where were we?” Jonathan asks, turning back to Jennifer. His tone reveals that his mind is returning to a romantic lunch with his wife.
“You know, darling, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking,” Jennifer replies, pulling out of her husband’s embrace. She walks over to the desk, contemplating.
Jonathan has a look of a bit of annoyance on his face. It is a look that shows he knows his wife’s mind is on the thefts rather than them having a private lunch for two.
“I’ve been trying to figure out all night why the only jewels taken from Jerad’s were pearl necklaces,” Jennifer continues, leaning against the front of her husband’s desk. “Gems, rhinestones, and diamonds are usually jewels to be stolen.”
Jonathan walks over to his wife and leans against the desk. He stops and ponders an explanation after thinking over Jennifer’s last words.
“I wonder,” Jennifer replies, sharing her thoughts.
“Wonder what?” Jonathan asks, turning to his wife.
“I wonder if the necklaces were counterfeit. That is the only explanation that would make sense unless they were stolen.”
Jonathan stops to think. He has a look on his face that shows he is wondering if Jennifer is right about the necklaces being counterfeit. Jonathan turns and looks at his wristwatch. “You know, darling, I had meant to get the battery in the watch you gave me changed for some time,” he says, looking up at Jennifer.
Jennifer turns to look at Jonathan as a smile comes across her face. Jennifer nods her head, knowing precisely what Jonathan is thinking.
Jerad’s Galleria Of Grand Jewels
Jonathan is standing in Jerad’s after lunch. A man has Jonathan’s wristwatch in his hand and is examining it.
“Yes, Mr. Hart. I do believe we have the battery you need for this watch. Wait here. I’ll be right back.”
He continues staring at the watch as he walks away to get the battery replaced.
Jonathan casually walks around. He heads over to the counter where the other pieces of jewels with pearls are for sale. Jonathan glances around to see if anyone is watching. The store is empty except for one salesman. Jonathan glances down at the jewels, wondering if the rest of the pieces are counterfeit. He continues staring at the pearls for a few moments. Jonathan walks around the store, passing the time while waiting for the battery in his wristwatch to be replaced. He comes upon a counter where wristwatches are on display. Jonathan looks down and examines the watches. The salesman sees him browsing and walks over to him.
“Are you planning on buying a new wristwatch?” he asks.
“No, I’m just waiting for the battery in my old one to be replaced,” Jonathan replies, looking up at the man.
The man returns with Jonathan’s wristwatch. “I’m sorry, Mr. Hart, but I was mistaken. We don’t have the right type of battery for this watch.”
“That’s all right. Since I am here, I might as well buy a new one,” Jonathan replies.
“If I may, sir, I recommend this watch,” the salesman says, pointing to the gold watch in the back that is of Gucci brand.
“How much is it?”
"$411.81.”
“$411.81?!!!” Jonathan asks, stunned.
“Well, we do have this watch here for $331.06,” the salesman replies, pointing to a silver watch of Gucci brand. “Remember, no matter what wristwatch you purchase, it 's still going to be expensive.”
“Yes, I can see that,” Jonathan replies, taking out his wallet. “I’ll take it.”
The salesman opens the counter and reaches in to take out the wristwatch Jonathan has selected for himself. “Has anyone else besides my wife shown any interest in those other pieces of jewelry with pearls?” he asks as the man shuts the counter.
“Yes, a good deal of our customers have shown an interest, but none of them have purchased those pieces,” the salesman says, placing the wristwatch on the counter.
Jonathan sighs reluctantly as he takes out his credit card for his purchase. He hands the card to the salesman.
“Thank you,” the salesman replies with a smile. The man swipes the card through the credit card terminal.
Jonathan enters his four digit PIN and waits for payment to be authenticated. The salesman then takes out a receipt and places it on the counter, along with a pen. Jonathan signs the receipt with his signature. The salesman takes the receipt before handing Jonathan his copy. He takes out a bag that has the store’s name on it and places the case containing the wristwatch inside. “Here you go,” the salesman says with a warm smile.
“Thanks,” Jonathan replies, taking the bag from him. He starts to head toward the front door.
Hendricks is standing in the back of the galleria, watching Jonathan leave the shop. He has a look of concern on his face. He walks over to the salesman.
“Did Mr. Hart purchase anything?” he asks, placing his hands on the counter.
“Yes, Mr. Hendricks. He purchased a wristwatch,” the salesman replies, turning around to face him.
Hart House The Following Day
That morning the family is gathered around the dining room table, finishing up their breakfast.
“I found some old photographs stored up in the attic of the house. I have them in my suitcase. They are old photographs taken of you, darling, when you were a teenager. I know Jonathan will want to see them,” Steven says, wiping his chin off with a napkin.
“I’m already waiting patiently,” Jonathan replies, exchanging smiles with Jennifer, who is blushing a bit.
Jennifer is about to reply when the door to the room opens.
“Hey, Mr. H, you got a telephone call from Lieutenant Draper,” Max says, sticking his head in.
“Oh, excuse me,” Jonathan replies with a sigh, rising to his feet. He walks out of the room as Max stands by.
Jennifer is a bit embarrassed by Jonathan being called away to answer the telephone. She manages a smile as she dangles her necklace.
“Isn’t that just like it when you are having breakfast to be called to the telephone?” Jennifer asks, chuckling, trying to hide her embarrassment.
She picks up her cup of coffee and takes a sip, hiding a look of annoyance.
Jonathan walks over to the extension on the table by the door. Max walks off, leaving him alone in the foyer. Jonathan picks up the receiver.
“Hello, lieutenant,” Jonathan says into the mouthpiece.
“Jonathan, I have some good news regarding Gus’ trial,” Lieutenant Draper replies from the other end of the line. “His trial date has been moved to the first week after New Years’ Day. Judge Conrad examined the police report. He thinks from the circumstantial evidence he found, it appears the DA and Jerad are trying to convict an innocent man without concrete proof of his guilt. The judge was very disappointed in the prosecutor’s hasty decision, to put it mildly.”
Jennifer walks into the foyer and stands by her husband.
“Hold on just a second, lieutenant,” Jonathan says into the receiver. He places his hand over the mouthpiece before turning to face Jennifer. “Darling, Gus’ trial date has been moved to the first week of January. The judge looked over the police report. He feels the district attorney and Jerad are trying to convict an innocent man.”
A broad smile comes across her face when she is about to reply.
“I have some news about Jerad’s you’ll want to know about,” Lieutenant Draper says, seriously.
Jonathan and Jennifer exchange glances. Jonathan takes his hand off the mouthpiece and places the receiver back up to his mouth.
“What happened?”
“Jerad’s was robbed again last night. The galleria was almost cleaned out. We didn’t find one single clue.”
“Could the robbery have been an inside job?”
“Hard to say, Jonathan. Last night’s theft looks like a professional thief broke in. The front door was forced open. That is why the judge decided to look over the report after hearing from the DA there wasn’t any evidence connecting Gus to the crime. Conrad found it odd a Santa Claus hat was found in the safe after the necklace was taken, but not when the store was almost wiped out. The judge also questioned Gus being the thief since the door hadn’t been tampered with during the previous theft. Far as Gus is concerned, he doesn’t strike him as a professional.”
“Hopefully, now that Conrad read the evidence filed in the report, Gus has a better chance of being found not guilty.”
“That is exactly how the department feels. Even the judge is doubtful, Gus will be convicted.”
“Were the pearl earrings and bracelet among the jewelry stolen?”
“Surprisingly, no. Why? Do you know anything?”
“I don’t know anything just yet. It’s just a hunch. Thanks for calling, Lieutenant Draper,” Jonathan replies with a smile. He hangs up the receiver. “It looks like Gus is going to get a fair trial. Even the judge questions Gus being found guilty,” Jonathan says, turning to Jennifer.
“It’s about time some good news came Gus’ way. I can’t wait to tell him and Max,” Jennifer replies with a smile. “What jewels were stolen last night?”
“Just about every piece of jewelry in the galleria, darling." “Only the lieutenant didn’t find any evidence including a Santa Claus hat. The door was forced open.”
“What?! That has to prove that Gus wasn’t behind the necklace being stolen. No one has access to the keys except Jerad, Hendricks, and the employees.”
“I had been thinking the same thing ever since the lieutenant told me the facts about the first robbery."
“Hendricks must have decided to break in in a desperate attempt to throw the suspicion off of himself, darling.”
“After seeing us around the store during the last couple of days, he must have gotten the feeling we suspect him and wasn’t going to take any chances. I’m going to look into our theory of counterfeit. I’ll call you if I find out anything,” Jonathan replies. He leans over to kiss Jennifer on the lips.
“Goodbye,” Jennifer says, kissing her husband.
Jonathan opens the door and walks out, shutting the door behind him. Jennifer walks over to the kitchen.
“Max, Gus, I have some good news about the trial,” Jennifer says, walking into the room.
A Street In Bel-Air
Jonathan is driving down a street in the Mercedes a few minutes later. He is heading on his way to work. The mobile car phone rings.
“Hello,” Jonathan replies, picking up the receiver.
“Mr. Hart, the computer is working again. That information you need should be in by this afternoon. I’ll bring it to your office just as soon as it is in my hand,” Arnold replies on the other end of the line.
“Yes, please do. It is vital I have that information just as soon as you receive it,” Jonathan says before hanging up the receiver.
He continues driving before an idea springs to his mind. He picks up the mobile phone and dials a number. His call is answered after a few seconds of waiting. “Carleton, this is Jonathan Hart. I’m fine. Thank you. Could you come over to Hart Industries this afternoon? Would it be possible for you to demonstrate how counterfeit jewelry is made? I could be on the trail of a counterfeit pearl necklace. You can? I’m very grateful. See you then.” He hangs up the receiver and continues driving.
Hart Industries That Afternoon
Jonathan sits on a couch in his office early that afternoon as an older man, Carleton Withers, stands facing him. He is demonstrating to Jonathan how fake pearls are manufactured. Just then, the door opens, and Arnold bursts into the room with continuous form paper in his hand. He is out of breath.
“Mr. Hart, excusing me for interrupting, but I have that information,” Arnold says, walking over to the couch.
“Thank you,” Jonathan replies, taking the information from his employee. “This is a jeweler from Beverly Hills, Carleton Withers,” he says, gesturing toward the other man. “He's also an expert on jewelry. Carleton is demonstrating to me how fake pearls are constructed. This is an employee of mine, Arnold.”
“It is a pleasure, Mr. Withers,” Arnold says, turning to the jeweler with a smile.
“Same here, Arnold,” Withers replies with a smile.
“You’ll want to look over that information immediately, sir,” Arnold says, turning to Jonathan with a look of shock.
Jonathan, noticing the tone in Arnold’s voice, begins to look over the information. He is stunned as a look of shock comes over his face.
“Mr. Withers, I appreciate you coming down,” Jonathan replies, rising to his feet. He walks over and extends his hand to Carleton Withers. “If you will excuse me, I have something that requires my attention. Thanks for taking the time to come over to show me how fake pearls are made.”
“I was pleased to do it, Jonathan,” Carleton replies. “I hope you catch that thief.”
Jonathan shows Carleton to the door. He holds the door open as the man walks out. Jonathan shuts the door and turns to face Arnold.
“Arnold, I want you to get me all the newspapers on the thefts at Jerad’s that had taken place,” Jonathan says, seriously.
“Yes, sir, I’ll get them right away,” Arnold replies, hurrying out of the office.
Jonathan is walking over to his desk as he hears Arnold shut the door behind him. He is still in a state of shock and continues reading the rest of the information. Jonathan takes a seat behind his desk.
Hart House
Jennifer is hurrying down the stairs in the foyer, her purse wrapped around her shoulder when the telephone rings. She is about to open the door when Max walks into the living room.
“Mrs. H, the call is for you. Jerad wants to speak to you.”
“Did he say what he wanted?” Jennifer asks, turning around to face Max.
“Nah, he just asked if you were home. He sounded like it was important.”
“All right, Max. I’ll take the call here,” Jennifer replies, placing her purse down on the table by the front door. She sighs as she picks up the receiver. “Jerad,” Jennifer says, speaking into the mouthpiece.
“Jennifer, I’m glad I got hold of you before you left,” Jerad replies in a cheerful tone from the other end of the line. “I just wanted to let you know
that I am dropping the charge against Gus. I hope my decision will benefit both of us. I have just discovered Hendricks was behind all the thefts, and I have the proof with me now. I want to
apologize to you and Gus in person. Could you come down to the galleria now? I want you to have those earrings you tried on the other day as my way of making up for any hard feelings. It won’t
take up much of your time.”
Jennifer sighs as she hesitates. “We’ll be right over,” she replies, good-naturedly before hanging up the receiver. She picks up her purse and heads to the kitchen.
Jerad’s Galleria Of Grand Jewels
Jerad hangs up the receiver on the counter of his almost empty store. He stays behind, holding a copy of a customer’s receipt in his hand. Jerad smiles slyly as he glances over the receipt. The receipt is made out to “Jonathan Hart.”
Hart House
Jennifer swings open the door to the kitchen. She walks in to find Max and Gus sitting around the table, playing a friendly game of Go Fish. Max is smoking a cigar.
“Hey, Mrs. H,” Max says, looking up to see Jennifer. “I thought you were leavin’,” he tells her, taking the cigar out of his mouth.
“Jerad is dropping the charge against Gus,” Jennifer replies with a smile, walking over to the table.
“What?!!!” Max and Gus both exclaim at the same time.
“He said he found proof Hendricks is the one who is behind the thefts. Gus, he wants us to come over to his store right away to apologize,” Jennifer says, standing behind Gus. “I told him we'd be right over.”
“Go Fish, Max!” Gus exclaims with a broad smile, placing the cards down on the table. He rises to his feet.
“What about pickin’ your dad and Angelina up at Strickland?” Max asks as he tosses his cards aside.
“Jerad’s is on the way. He assured me we wouldn’t be long,” Jennifer replies. “If Jonathan calls be sure to tell him we were right about Hendricks all along,” she says, turning to face Max.
Max nods as Jennifer and Gus start to walk out of the kitchen. Max hears a bark from down below. He turns to see Freeway smiling up at him, wagging his tail.
“What? Want to learn how to play?” Max asks, looking down at the dog.
Freeway appears to be shaking his head. He suddenly jumps onto Max’s lap.
“Hey, Freeway, you’re heavy!” Max exclaims, petting the dog. “Come on. I got to finish up wrappin’ gifts in my room. You can help me,” he tells the dog, placing Freeway down on the floor gently.
Hart Industries
Arnold walks into Jonathan’s office soon after with an arm full of newspapers.
“I got all the newspapers on the thefts,” Arnold says, rushing over to Jonathan’s desk.
Before Jonathan can make a move, Arnold throws the stack of newspapers onto the desk. His desk is nearly swamped with the papers.
“Was that all you could find?” Jonathan asks sarcastically, looking up at his employee with a smile.
“Yes, sir. Do you need any more newspapers?” Arnold asks, not realizing his employer was only joking.
“No, Arnold, I think I am good. Thank you,” Jonathan replies with a smile, picking up a newspaper.
Arnold nods and heads toward the door. He opens the door and walks out, shutting it on his way out.
Jonathan is reading over a newspaper by the Los Angeles Tribune. After he finishes reading that paper, he tosses it aside. Jonathan picks up the rest of the newspapers and starts to tidy up. Jonathan, after getting all of the papers organized neatly in stacks, places them down on the desk. He picks up another newspaper and flips through it until he comes across the article on the theft he was looking for. A look of curiosity comes across his face as he finds himself halfway through the article. He places the paper down and picks up the Los Angeles Tribune newspaper. Jonathan begins to read over the account of the robbery again with great interest. He finally puts it down and picks up another paper. Jonathan continues reading a few more newspapers before a look comes over his face, a look that shows he has found out something about the thefts.
“All the pearl necklaces shoplifted in every one of Jerad’s stores across the country were stolen without any witnesses present. The salesmen and manager were assisting customers at the time. His partner, Hendricks, was left in charge of the store in Beverly Hills while Jerad was away on business. Jerad was in his office during the thefts and was the one who noticed the jewelry missing,” Jonathan says, examining the clues he found from the papers out loud.
“And the necklaces were shoplifted after they had been appraised. If those necklaces had been appraised before being stolen, why was the pearl necklace in Jerad’s in Beverly Hills stolen before the appraiser could examine it?” he wonders. “If Jerad couldn’t switch the pearls, he had to have someone steal the necklace before the appraiser discovered the necklace was counterfeit,” Jonathan says, putting all the pieces together. He places the newspaper down and presses a button on the intercom.
“Yes, Mr. Hart?” Jonathan’s secretary asks.
“Kelly, please call LAX for me right away,” Jonathan replies into the intercom.
“Yes, sir,” Kelly answers.
Jonathan picks up some of the other newspapers and glances through the reports on the thefts. His thoughts are soon interrupted when his intercom is buzzed. Jonathan presses a button.
“Los Angeles International Airport is on line 1,” Kelly replies.
Jonathan picks up the telephone receiver and presses the button for line one.
“Hello, could you tell me if Mr. Filberate Cardwell is on the passenger list for today?” Jonathan asks. “Yes, I’ll hold,” he replies after listening to the person on the other end of the receiver.
Jerad’s Galleria of Grand Jewels
Jennifer, pulling up to the jewelry store in the Corniche, brings the car to a stop. Jennifer and Gus get out of the vehicle. They approach Jerad’s. Jennifer and Gus enter to find the place empty. Just as Jennifer shuts the door, Jerad sneaks up from behind. He hits her over the head with a gun. Jennifer falls to the floor, unconscious. Just as Gus turns to see Jennifer on the ground, Jerad walks up to him with the gun. Before Gus can react, Jerad knocks him out hard with the weapon.
Hart Industries
Jonathan is sitting at his desk on the telephone. He is still on hold. Finally, the woman, who answered his call, comes back on the line.
“Sir, there is no Filberate Cardwell on today’s passenger list or any day of this week,” she tells Jonathan. “I checked the list thoroughly.”
“Thank you,” Jonathan replies before dialing a number.
Hart House
Max is standing in his bedroom, finishing up wrapping a gift. He is going through a selection of bows he has on his bed. Freeway sits up on the bed watching him.
“Which one do you like, Freeway?” Max asks, holding up several bows in different colors. One is red, the other green, and the last one white.
Freeway looks at the white bow and barks.
“White, huh? Why not? It’s as close to white for Christmas Mr. H is goin’ to get,” Max replies with a shrug just as the telephone rings. He places the bow on the package and turns around to pick up the telephone receiver.
“Hart Residence,” Max says, answering the call.
“Max, put Mrs. H on the phone,” Jonathan replies from the other end of the line.
“She ain’t here, Mr. H. She and Gus left a while ago for Jerad’s. He called here askin’ to speak to her. Jerad told Mrs. H he is droppin’ the charge against Gus. He wanted them to come down so he could apologize in person.”
Hart Industries
Jonathan is standing up with the receiver in his hand. He is in a state of panic.
“Call Lieutenant Draper and have him meet me at Jerad’s. Jennifer and Gus have been set up.”
“What are you talkin’ about? Hendricks is the one behind the thefts. Jerad told Mrs. H himself,” Max replies, confused at what Jonathan is telling him.
“No, Max, Jerad was facing bankruptcy. All those pearl necklaces stolen in every one of his stores were counterfeit. I can’t explain now. Jennifer and Gus are in danger. Just call the police,” Jonathan replies nervously before hanging up the receiver.
He rushes toward the door and dashes out of the office, his mind only on coming to Jennifer’s rescue.
Hart House
Max stands facing the telephone. He is dialing the number of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Police Station quickly as he can. He waits a few moments before his call is answered.
“Let me speak to Lieutenant Draper. It’s an emergency,” Max says with worry.
Jerad’s Galleria Of Grand Jewels
Jennifer and Gus are seated separately in a chair side by side in Jerad’s office in the back of the store. The office door is shut. Their arms are tied up tightly behind the back of the chair with their feet tied to the front. They are also gagged. They are still unconscious. Jennifer and Gus are slowing regaining consciousness. Jennifer attempts to lift her chair up, but finds it is no use. Jerad has tied her up so well she can’t move.
A Street In Los Angeles
Jonathan is driving down a busy street in the business district of Los Angeles. He is a short distance away from his office building. He is driving over the speed limit. Jonathan is hurrying to get to Jerad’s before he lays a hand on his wife. He continues driving for a few moments. Suddenly up ahead, Jonathan notices to his frustration and panic that the road is under construction. He is forced to bring the Mercedes to a screeching halt upon seeing a sign that reads, “Road Work Ahead.” Jonathan sighs and picks up the mobile car phone.
“LA Mobile, get me Jerad’s Galleria Of Grand Jewels on Rodeo Drive,” Jonathan says into the receiver.
After waiting a minute, Jonathan’s call is finally put through to the store. He hears ringing on the other end of the line.
“Come on, Jerad! Answer!” Jonathan exclaims in exasperation. He is fuming with anger.
Finally, the ringing stops, and Jonathan hears the phone being taken off of the hook.
“Jerad, the police have already been called! If you lay one hand on my wife-’’ Jonathan starts to yell into the receiver when he is cut off.
He hangs up the receiver in anger.
Jerad’s Galleria Of Grand Jewels
Jerad is standing behind a counter in the store, which is almost filled in darkness. He disconnects the telephone from the socket. Jerad walks over to the front door. He locks the door and proceeds to head down to the back of the store.
Meanwhile, Jonathan is once again hurrying towards Rodeo Drive on a freeway, when he sees construction going on. A sign up ahead reads, “Left Lane Closed Ahead.”
Jonathan sighs and hits the wheel in frustration. He proceeds to turn the car around quick as a flash. Jonathan speeds down the freeway, driving down the way he came. He nearly collides with passing vehicles who slam on their brakes to avoid crashing into his Mercedes.
Jerad’s Galleria of Grand Jewels
Jennifer and Gus are now trapped in a closet in Jerad’s office. They remain helpless as they are still tied up and gagged. Jennifer has managed to lift her chair up and is attempting to knock the door down with all the strength she has. Gus is watching her attempt to break loose. He is hopeful they can get free.
Meanwhile, in the store, Jerad is putting all the cash he took from his register, into a small bag. He zips up the bag just as Jonathan barges in after forcing the front door open.
“Where are Jennifer and Gus?!” Jonathan demands to know with a look of anger. He has to resist his urge to tear Jerad, a man he knew and trusted for years, apart. Jonathan confronts him. He notices the bag. “Stealing from your store and framing an innocent man wasn’t enough, Jerad? You have to hold my wife and Max’s friend hostage!!! Where are they?!!!” he demands to know, his temper boiling inside of him.
Jonathan is about to take one step closer when Jerad pulls out a gun from underneath the counter on the ground. He gives him a look of disgust. Jonathan ducks just as Jerad takes two shots at him. He slowly falls to the ground with his eyes closing shut. Jonathan lies motionless.
Meanwhile, Jennifer and Gus have heard the shots. Tears stream down Jennifer’s face as she in a state of nerves and panic.
“JONATHAN!!!!!!!” Jennifer screams in fear, afraid Jonathan is seriously injured or dead. She attempts even harder to break the door down as tears stream down Gus’ eyes.
Jerad, staring down at Jonathan’s lifeless body, doesn’t show any sign of remorse or fear after shooting him. Jerad continues with his plan. His mind is on other things other than murder. He turns around and aims the gun at a counter where the rest of the remaining jewelry is left. Among them are the pearl earrings and bracelet. He stands back, firing at the glass in the counter. The glass shatters into pieces. Jerad, carefully watching where his feet touch, makes his way over to behind the counter.
He bends down and picks up the remaining jewelry, which he places in his bag one by one. The pearl earrings and bracelet are the last to be taken. He zips up the bag. Jonathan continues lying motionless as Jerad walks over with a Santa Claus hat in his other hand. He bends down and places it next to one of Jonathan’s hands. Jerad then takes off Jonathan’s wristwatch and puts it next to the hat. He then wipes his fingerprints off with a handkerchief. Jerad, wrapping the handkerchief around the trigger, walks over to the back of the counter, where he places the weapon down gently on the floor. He carefully steps over the glass and starts to head down to his office.
Jonathan comes through and lifts himself up. He sees the glass in the counter broken, the remaining jewelry stolen, the glass, the hat, his wristwatch, and the gun. He understands what Jerad is up to. Jonathan quietly sneaks upon him. He throws himself against him, knocking Jerad to the ground along with the bag. Jerad lifts himself up and turns to Jonathan. He begins to take a swing at him with the bag, but Jonathan snatches the bag away from him. Jerad lunges toward Jonathan. The two men are now on top of each other, wrestling on the ground.
Jerad forces Jonathan to his feet by grabbing hold of him by the hand. They hit each other with their fist. Jerad throws a heavy blow to Jonathan. Jonathan falls to the ground. Before he can lift himself up, Jerad grabs hold of him by the arm. He swings Jonathan around and shoves him toward a counter. Jonathan goes flying across the room and lands against the counter.
Jonathan winces in pain from a headache. Other than the pain in his head, he isn’t injured by the fall. He slowly looks up to see Jerad staring at him, ready to make a break for it any moment Jonathan comes near him. Jonathan sighs. He carefully lifts himself up. A look of rage comes over his face as Jerad starts to dash out of the room. Jonathan comes charging toward him. He shoves him against a counter. He pins Jerad to the counter, placing an arm against his neck. Jerad is struggling to breathe against Jonathan’s tight grip.
“Where is Jennifer?! Where is she?!!” Jonathan angrily shouts out.
“She and Gus are in the closet in my office,” Jerad replies, weakly. “I didn’t hurt them.”
Jonathan glares at the man as he stares at him for a few moments. He finally lets go of Jerad. Just as he starts toward his office, Jerad leaps forward.
The men lose their balance and go flying across the room. They roll around on the ground, knocking everything over in sight.
Meanwhile, in the office, Jennifer and Gus have heard the commotion. Jennifer sighs in relief, sensing Jonathan is alive and well. She can’t stand being held captive anymore. Jennifer, sighing, attempts even harder to break the door open with her chair. She is bending down as she throws the back of the chair to the doorknob with her weight. It works. The door is forced open. Somehow the ropes came loose, and Jennifer is set free. Jennifer quickly removes the tape from her mouth. She mouths “Ouch” after feeling the sting from removing the tape. She hurries over to Gus, who is still in the closet. Jennifer bends down and begins to untie him. She starts with his feet before untying his hands. She carefully and slowly removes the tape from his mouth.
“Are you all right, Gus?” Jennifer whispers, throwing the ropes to the floor.
“I’m fine, thanks to you,” Gus whispers, rising to his feet.
Jennifer and Gus run toward the door. They find it bolted locked from inside. Jennifer unlocks the door, and they hurry out of the room. They run into the store. Jennifer smiles, relieved, that Jonathan is unharmed. Jennifer and Gus watch as Jonathan and Jerad are still fighting each other. Gus is impressed at Jonathan’s ability to fight and roots for him while moving his fists around.
Jonathan and Jerad are wrestling against a counter. Jerad attempts to hit Jonathan in the face with his fist. Jonathan ducks and throws his fist at Jerad hard. Jerad feels his cheek sting and touches his face. Jonathan lifts himself up and hurries over to a bench behind him. He carefully steps onto the bench. Just as Jerad rushes toward him, Jonathan gets ready to take action against him. Jonathan jumps off and lands on Jerad as he is about to lunge forward. They fall to the ground. Jonathan lifts himself to his feet. Jerad sighs as the fight is taking a toll on him. A man his age is not accustomed to attacking a younger and strong man like Jonathan.
Jonathan grabs hold of Jerad by the arm and lifts him to his feet. He notices the Christmas decorations in the window display behind Jerad. The decorations include a Christmas tree with all the ornaments, lights, and a star on top. Jonathan swings him around and shoves Jerad toward the tree. Jerad is in a state of shock and panic as he finds himself flying across the room. He lands on his back in front of the tree. The impact of the fall causes some of the ornaments to fall off that land near him and break. Jerad looks up in time to see the star come crashing down and land on his head. He is knocked unconscious.
Jonathan turns to see Gus applauding and whistling. Jennifer rushes up to her husband’s side.
“Darling, are you all right?” Jonathan asks, thankful to see his wife had been left unharmed.
“Me all right?! You are the one who did all the fighting,” Jennifer replies with a smile. “I’m fine.” She kisses Jonathan on the lips.
They embrace. Jennifer glances over and stares at Jerad, lying on his back under the tree.
“Well, darling, I guess this means he will end up on Santa’s naughty list this year,” she says with a chuckle.
Jonathan gives Jennifer a wry smile as a response. They hear the sound of footsteps. The Harts and Gus turn to see Lieutenant Draper and his men burst in with their guns drawn. Steven is standing behind them, breathing a sigh of relief at finding his daughter safe.
“What kept you?” Jonathan asks, placing his hands on his hips. “Are all roads under construction in Los Angeles?” he asks, good-naturedly.
Jennifer turns to face Jonathan, wondering why he made that last remark.
Hart House Night
Jonathan, Steven, Angelina, and Gus are seated around the fireplace Christmas Eve while Jennifer sits at the piano. She begins playing “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” while Max stands at the bar pouring punch into crystal glasses. Jennifer is wearing pearl earrings and a necklace.
“Have yourself a merry little Christmas,” Jennifer is singing while Max hands Jonathan and the guests their glass of punch.
“Let your heart be light
From now on, all our troubles will be out of sight.”
Jonathan smiles at Jennifer. He is proud of his wife’s many gifts. Jennifer smiles and shoots her a husband a wink as she continues.
“Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the yule-tide gay”
From now on, our troubles will be miles away.”
Jennifer begins to sing the next verse as everyone else in the room joins in singing along with her.
“Here we are as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.”
Jennifer smiles, deeply touched her husband, and guests are singing a Christmas favorite along with her. Steven wraps his arm around Angelina. Max is seated next to Gus, who exchange smiles. Jonathan rises to his feet and walks over to the piano as his wife sings the final verses. Jennifer smiles at Jonathan, standing by her side. Together they sing the rest of the verses with everyone assembled in the room.
“Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now
Here we are as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.
Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas.”
Jonathan, Steven, Angelina, Max, and Gus applaud. Freeway, who is sitting under the Christmas tree, even barks while sitting up.
“Thank you!” Jennifer exclaims, rising to her feet.
“You were sensational, darling,” Jonathan replies, turning to face his wife. He kisses her on the lips.
“You sounded good too, darling,” Jennifer says, kissing her husband.
“Jennifer, your mother would have been very proud of you. You inherited her fine voice and musical talent,” Steven says with a proud smile.
“I’ll second that,” Jonathan replies, placing his arm around Jennifer.
“Mrs. H, you sounded swell!” Max exclaims.
“You do have a beautiful voice,” Angelina agrees, lifting her glass of punch.
“This high praise is too much. I better have some of that punch,” Jennifer says with a warm smile.
“I’ll get it for you,” Jonathan replies, walking over to the bar.
Jennifer walks over as Jonathan pours her punch into a glass. He hands her the glass.
“Here you go.”
“Thank you,” Jennifer replies, taking the glass.
Jonathan picks up his glass. He joins his wife in drinking the punch. They suddenly hear Gus tapping on his glass.
“I would like to take this moment to thank Jonathan and Jennifer for giving me the best Christmas I ever had! You sure know how to warm an old man’s heart!” Gus exclaims, rising to his feet. “Max was right. You two are the best!” he insists, raising his glass in honor of his host and hostess, along with Max.
“I’ll drink to that,” Max says with a broad smile, taking a sip along with Gus. He drinks the rest of the punch. “Well, I don’t know about the rest of you folks, but it is close to midnight. I’m ready to hit the sack,” he says, placing his glass down.
“I agree. I’ve stayed up past my bedtime,” Gus replies, sipping the rest of his glass. “Goodnight. Merry Christmas,” he says, placing his glass down.
“Merry Christmas,” Jonathan and Jennifer both tell Gus with a smile.
“I’m ready to turn in too,” Steven says, placing his glass down. “Thank you for the punch, Max,” he adds, turning to Max. “It was delicious.”
“I’m glad you liked it,” Max replies with a smile. “Well, goodnight, folks,” he says, rising to his feet. “Merry Christmas.” He starts to walk out of the room.
“Merry Christmas, Max,” Jennifer replies.
“Merry Christmas,” Jonathan says.
“Oh, Mr. and Mrs. H, could I have a word with you for a second?” Max asks, walking over to the bar.
“Sure. What’s on your mind?” Jonathan asks.
“After the shock of Mrs. H and Gus being held hostage and Jerad was one behind the thefts, I forgot to ask what you found out about Hendricks. For an innocent man, he was actin’ a bit suspicious,” Max replies softly.
“Hendricks told the police he was afraid he would be suspected of all robberies since he had a strong motive.”
“Yeah, but he wasn’t around when the necklaces were stolen in the other stores.”
“Hendricks did have a key to the store and knew how to work the alarm though,” Jennifer points out. “He felt the lieutenant and the district attorney would be certain he had someone steal the pearls for him. Don’t forget Jerad paid the man, whom he got the forgeries from, to stage the armed robbery after the real piece was lost during shipment.”
“He must have been knocked over with a feather when he found out Jerad was the actual thief. How could he not know about the bankruptcy?” Max asks in disbelief.
“Jerad was the one who always handled the finances,” Jonathan explains. “He never even confessed to his partner about the financial problems the store was facing.”
“Why did Hendricks lie about being out of town for a family emergency?”
“Hendricks had to have surgery on his hands, Max,” Jennifer replies. “He has arthritis. In his statement to the police, he told them he was afraid he would be fired if Jerad found out how serious his condition is. At least Hendricks finally filed charges against Finley’s friend for harassment and threatening his life.”
“And Mr. H recommended him for a partnership with Charlton Withers,” Max says with a wide smile.
“It was the least I could do considering Christmas is the season for giving. Jennifer and I have known the man for years,” Jonathan replies.
“And we did suspect him,” Jennifer adds.
“Well, as they say, all’s well that ends well,” Max says with a yawn. “Goodnight.” He walks out of the living room.
“Dad, I hope you are having a nice Christmas with us,” Jennifer replies as her father walks over.
“It is the best Christmas I had since I celebrated it with you and your mother,” Steven assures her with a smile, embracing his daughter.
“Goodnight, darling. Merry Christmas. He kisses her on the lips. “Goodnight, Jonathan,” Steven says, extending to his hand to Jonathan. “Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, Steven,” Jonathan replies as Steven walks out of the living room and heads toward the front door.
“Goodnight, Aunt Jennifer. Thank you for inviting me,” Angelina says, placing her glass down.
“I’m glad you could spend Christmas with us,” Jennifer replies as Angelina walks over. “Goodnight. Merry Christmas,” she says as she and Angelina embrace.
“Goodnight. Merry Christmas,” Angelina replies with a smile, turning to Jennifer and Jonathan.
“Goodnight,” Jonathan says as Angelina starts up the stairs in the foyer to head to the guest room.
Jennifer starts to head up the stairs. Jonathan walks over to his wife and takes her hand from behind.
“I thought we were going to bed, darling,” Jennifer says, turning around to face her husband.
“We are, but not upstairs,” Jonathan replies with a sly smile, pulling her to him.
“Oh!” Jennifer exclaims with a wide smile, placing her arms around her husband’s neck. “Where exactly did you have in mind for us to sleep?” she asks, coyly.
A while later, a warm fire is set in the fireplace as Jonathan and Jennifer are talking. They are lying in a sleeping bag in their pajamas next to each other in front of the fireplace. The couches and tables have been moved forward. Most of the lights are off except for the tree lights. Freeway is sitting upon a couch out of sight, watching them.
“Now, isn’t spending Christmas Eve by a cozy and warm fire better than sleeping in our bed?” Jonathan asks.
“Yes,” Jennifer replies, turning around to face him. “But, darling, whenever I am asleep, I only think of us together,” she tells her husband with a sly smile. “We have each other to keep warm all year round,” she says seductively.
Jonathan smiles as he takes Jennifer in his arms. Jennifer tightly wraps her arms around her husband. They move around on their backs, kissing passionately. Jonathan reaches over and gently runs his hand over his wife’s neck slowly. Jennifer reaches over and takes the receiver off of the hook from a telephone on the floor beside her.

@Barbara, thank you for leaving a comment! I'm glad you enjoyed my episode as always!!! I included those scenes of our favorite couple arguing because it fit the situation with all those people staying at their home. Those arguments gets on my last nerves. I found it odd how in Larsen's Last Jump they never really discussed their lastest quarrel. It was so unusual to see them fighting. I always wanted to include a scene with Jonathan and Jennifer opening up about their disagreements so I was so glad this episode was the perfect one to write it!!!
